  • Rediscover Singapore with Urban Exploration Challenge: Urban Sports & Wellness Week 2022

Explore Singapore on foot or bicycle and win a free stay at ibis Budget Hotel, a Thermal Suite experience with Trapeze Rec Club, and attractive prizes from Huggs Coffee and Sunday Shades PHOTO: SUPERHERO RUNNERS While the onset of Covid-19 has raised overall participation levels for running and cycling both in Singapore and the region over the past 3 years, the re-opening of the industry begged the question of whether this trend would stop as people made their way back to the offices and schools. The good news? Little has changed as runners, be it solo or in groups, together with cyclists continue to hit the roads and park connectors on a weekly basis even as Singapore transitioned back into life post-Covid. Whether you are an avid runner, or perhaps just someone looking for a leisurely cycle or walk with friends and family, you can do so and get rewarded this November when you take part in the Urban Exploration Challenge of the Urban Sports and Wellness Week hosted by ibis Budget Hotels and organised by media partners Sport Plus Media Pte Ltd. Urban Exploration Challenge A week-long activity, Urban Exploration features a total of 8 check-points - four (4) ibis Budget Hotel outlets, three (3) Huggs Coffee outlets and wellness centre Trapeze Rec Club; in which participants can stand to win attractive digital giveaways while sweating it out through the workout of their choice - running, cycling, walking. PHOTO: SUPERHERO RUNNERS The highlight of Urban Exploration week is an organised group run led by popular local running group Superhero Runners on the morning of Saturday, 12 November 2022 at 8am. Superhero Runners x Urban Sports and Wellness Week Formed in 2014, Superhero Runners was founded by three friends and runners who shared a love for Superhero movies and characters, while also having a common interest in running. And while it started as a small group with just friends and families, the group eventually expanded in size, with the group size these days ranging from 50 on good days and approximately 30 runners each week on average days. PHOTO: SUPERHERO RUNNERS When asked why he loved running and how it has motivated him, co-founder and co-captain Sebastian Cheong said: "I run to maintain my fitness level and to hopefully run till I'm old." Nelson Wong, also co-founder and co-captain, added: "Running is a great way to release stress and clear the mind. Persistence is the key to overcoming challenges in life." PHOTO: SUPERHERO RUNNERS What Participants Can Expect The organised group run will only be visting five (5) out of the 8 checkpoints of the week-long Urban Exploration Challenge, with the total route measuring approximately 8km. And while the group usually does tempo runs, hill repeats and intervals, registrants of the organised group run for Urban Exploration on Saturday, 12 November can expect an easier pace - and runners of all fitness levels are welcome to participate as it will be more of a city sight-seeing run. There will be a proper warm-up conducted before the run and cool down workout after the run. PHOTO: SUPERHERO RUNNERS How Should Participants Prepare for the Run? All you need is a decent pair of running shoes and comfortable cooling apparels. Stay regularly hydrated before, during and after the run. • Aqua Fitness Workout: Urban Sports and Wellness Week

Led by The Fitness Project, the Aqua Fitness program at the Urban Sports and Wellness Week promises a full-body workout that will work participants to the core PHOTO: THE FITNESS PROJECT Looking to cool off from the tropical heat of Singapore? Come make waves with us at the Aqua Fitness event at the inaugural Urban Sports and Wellness Week then. Taking place on the morning of Sunday, 13 November 2022 at the rooftop swimming pool of ibis Budget Singapore Clarke Quay hotel with a view overlooking the scenic Singapore river, you're promised a workout you won't get anywhere else. Incorporating a well-known program by The Fitness Project in preceding years known as Hydro Fit, participants will climb atop floating boards in the swimming pool, with a combination of exercises both on the boards and in the pool that is designed to improve your balance, strength and core. PHOTO: THE FITNESS PROJECT What is HydroFit? If you think you can master burpees or the warrior pose on the land, then take it to the next level and try to do it on water. HydroFit by The Fitness Project is a HIIT and yoga inspired workout taken onto the water, with the choppiness of the water serving as a natural element to improve your balance and stability, making it a great choice for an injury prevention, low-impact, cardio workout choice. PHOTO: THE FITNESS PROJECT Previous HydroFit classes were known for a good balance of individual and pair work, and incorporated various yoga poses and HIIT moves such as burpees, jump squats and ball work. What Participants Can Expect The one thing participants should expect is to get wet. As much as you wish to stay dry, we have rarely seen a participant stay totally dry by the end of a HydroFit class. Anyway, falling into the pool is part of the fun and not doing so does take something away from the overall experience! PHOTO: THE FITNESS PROJECT What To Bring for Class You will want to bring along swimwear or athleisure wear that you aren't afraid of getting wet in, some sunblock and hydration. Towels will be provided by ibis Budget Singapore Clarke Quay. Win Attractive Prizes Stand to win a 2 Day 1 Night stay at ibis Budget Hotels, a 10-class pack with Grit Yard gym (shareable between friends), or a pair of Sunday Shades when you sign up for the Aqua Fitness x Urban Sports and Wellness Week class on Sunday, 13 November 2022. • Guiding mums on their fitness journeys after pregnancy: Nevena Appleton

She may be an expat but has fast become a local favourite - this personal trainer started Fitmum.sg to coach fellow mums on their fitness journeys after having a baby PHOTO VIA NEVENA APPLETON For many mums, finding the time to exercise postpartum whilst managing #momguilt and many other physical and emotional changes at the same time can be a real struggle. Wanting to play her part and help the mum community, fellow mum and personal trainer, Nevena Appleton, founded Fitmum.sg. Nevena has lived in Singapore for 5 years with her husband and daughter, Siena. Though balancing life as a mum and running her own business is challenging, Nevena is fueled by the positive feedback she receives from her clients. PHOTO VIA NEVENA APPLETON “Everytime I get positive feedback, I feel so happy that I am doing something special. My daughter is my inspiration as well. Motherhood changes everything and I want to be a good example for her and to teach her to be fit and healthy.” Offering both online and physical classes, Fitmum.sg strives to provide convenient options that would allow mums to ease into a comfortable and suitable exercise routine after birth. Nevena also posts regular content on Instagram, sharing postpartum workout and recovery tips, and raising awareness about common postpartum conditions. PHOTO VIA NEVENA APPLETON “I feel that mums do not get enough attention as their babies will always come first. I felt down after pregnancy and working out helped me alot. I wanted to share my knowledge and experience to help other mums out by being their personal trainer or just by motivating them on Instagram”, she shared. Besides working around her clients’ schedules, Nevena believes that her clients who are mums choose her mostly because she understands them and knows what it’s like. “Working with a postpartum trainer is a personal preference. I believe that I am supportive, motivating and understanding. I am proud of every mum that is or was my client, because I know how hard it can be to find the time to exercise when you have a little one.” PHOTO VIA NEVENA APPLETON As determined as mums may be for their bodies to “bounce back” after pregnancy, it is also important to remember and appreciate how much the body went through and to recover well. Nevena believes that in postpartum fitness and recovery, a slow start is key to success. PHOTO VIA NEVENA APPLETON “There shouldn’t be any pressure.” “Postpartum is a beautiful journey that you should use to bond with your baby, exercising comes after that. Being a mum myself I can tell you that everything is possible and your postpartum body could be the best body you have ever had.” #SportPlusSG #Fitness #NevenaAppleton

  • lululemon 'Express Your Strength' Train Collection Review

Express Your Strength is lululemon's invitation to all women to embrace the benefits of training PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Our latest review on activewear products turns to lululemon's 'Express Your Strength' training range, as national hockey athlete and SportPlus Marketing and PR representative Gene Leck recently decked herself out from head to toe in lululemon's training range. Find out what she has to say here! I recently tried out the lululemon Energy Bra Asia Fit, Wunder Train High-Rise Short with Pockets, as well as The Reversible Mat from the Express Your Strength Train Collection. In all honesty, I was very excited to try out the apparels because of how much I’ve heard about lululemon’s products (especially from my friends who are big lulu fans). Visit our photo gallery and lookbook for more photos from this particular series featuring Gene Leck here! PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Energy Bra Asia Fit I first read about lululemon's Energy Bra in an article posted on our website earlier this year 'Choosing the Right Sports Bra for your Workout' on sports bra recommendations, where Yogi and Cross-fit trainer Dawn Sim described it as a “versatile all-rounder bra” as she shared her top sports bra recommendations. For an athlete like me, the bra seemed like it would cater well to the different intensities of activities that I engage in on a regular basis - hockey training, strength and conditioning in the gym, and HIIT workouts. PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Aesthetic Design I chose the Energy Bra in the shade Scream Green Light (it literally screams green light) as I thought that the luminous shade of green would be a refreshing pop of colour in my wardrobe (p.s. I don’t own many neon coloured apparels). Trying it on, I felt the colour complimented my complexion nicely and was very pleased with how it looked on me. I especially liked the double strapped cross back detail that enhances the look and style of the bra. Visit our photo gallery and lookbook for more photos from this particular series featuring Gene Leck here! PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Fit and Support As for the sizing of the bra, it was a snug fit that was accurate to its measurements. I tried jumping, skipping and some simple yoga exercises in the bra and true to its description, the bra offered more than sufficient support, even for the activities of higher intensity. The support definitely allows for versatility of use as I can pretty much use it for any form of exercise, without having to worry if it’d provide enough support. PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Feel of Material Made of Luxtreme™, one of lululemon’s best-selling fabrics, the sweat-wicking material helps the bra to stay breathable and remains cool to the touch, even when I’m sweating buckets from my workout. I’m usually extra-conscious of the material my sports bras are made of as I tend to get abrasions or should I call them aBRAsions from the rubbing on the skin at the band area. As for the Energy Bra, I might not have worn it for a long enough period to know for sure, but just from the duration of the workout alone, it felt comfortable enough for me and I highly doubt that it would have given me an aBRAsion even if I had worn it for a longer period of time. Visit our photo gallery and lookbook for more photos from this particular series featuring Gene Leck here! PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG In all, I had no complaints about the Energy Bra and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish sports bra that looks good and feels good to be in for almost any form of workout. Wunder Train High-Rise Short with Pockets 8” I tried the Wunder Train Shorts in the conventional black which is my go-to because it’s a lot easier to match with bra tops of any colour. I think when it comes to activewear bottoms, regardless of shorts or tights, there are some common concerns - how well the tights hug onto our bodies, if the fit looks good, if the tights are good enough to avoid unflattering fits in certain areas. So how did I feel about the Wunder Train High-Rise Short? PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Firstly, I liked the pockets that were sufficiently deep to hold my phone. I think the pockets were designed to hold lightweight objects so it will be perfect for car keys, cards or even some cash for those who like to go to their workouts with too many things on hand. As for the fit of the short, from what I understand, the 8” is a slightly longer version, which is a little different for me compared to my usual short that ends higher than mid-thigh height. But the unfamiliar length definitely did not get in the way of my workout. I liked the general tightness of the shorts especially at the waistband area and I felt it offered a good amount of compression and stretch - just about right and not too tight for my athletic thighs. The Wunder Train Shorts were extremely comfortable to work out in as it stayed relatively dry throughout. Powered by Lululemon’s Exerlux fabric, the shorts possess sweat-wicking features to help one stay cool in comfort throughout a workout. PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG The Reversible Mat I tried The Reversible Mat in the shades Chalky Rose/ Graphite Grey and I absolutely love the rosy pink shade. The pink side of the mat is the smoother textured side with a rubber grip that allows for better balance. I generally sweat quite a lot and have experienced mats that didn’t have a good enough grip where I would slip off amidst the workout. I was pleasantly pleased with the grip support that The Reversible Mat could provide. And the fact that it’s in such a pretty shade of pink is a definite plus point. The mat also comes with a natural rubber base that is designed for cushioning and a textured grip for low-sweat practices. In all, I’m in awe of the quality and comfort that the Lululemon apparels provide and can definitely understand why they are so popular amongst the active crowd. • 3 Spin Bike Core Workouts for You to Stay Lean

Want to have a good workout without putting on too much bulk? Here are three popular core workouts for you to stay lean on a stationary bike in the gym or at home SYNC CYCLE Instructor, Jocelyn Tan on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG If you are looking to get a good workout without putting on the extra bulk, then spin could be just the workout for you! Acquire skills and strengthen your core muscles with these three core workouts shared with us by Sync Cycle Instructor Jocelyn Tan. Before you begin Ensure that you have enough resistance when on the bike when doing these workouts. In order to do so, you can adjust the resistance knob at the front of the bike. The red resistance knob can be found at the front of the spin bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Adjusting to the appropriate resistance level is important, as this reduces tension on your knees and prevents injuries while riding. Now you are ready to groove to the beats and music! 1. Isolation Core Workout on a Spin Bike Going for the most basic movement, you’re going to put your hands on Position 3 on the handlebars, placing your fingertips on position three on the handlebar, activating your core in your upper body, and imagine a bowl of water on the top of your head. SYNC CYCLE Instructor Jocelyn Tan demonstrating the correct posture while on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG SYNC CYCLE Instructor Jocelyn Tan demonstrating the correct posture while on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 1a. OPTION: If you are adopting this option instead of just an isolated core workout, you’re going to lift your arms up and point them straight. Engaging your core, hold it for a few seconds and switch over by lifting the other hand. SYNC CYCLE Instructor, Jocelyn Tan demonstrating Isolation Core Option on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 1b. ADVANCED OPTION: For advanced riders, another option that can be adopted instead of having your hands on the handlebar is to bring both hands up, pointing them straight and holding them ahead of you. Always remember to engage your core and straighten your back for peak performance* SYNC CYCLE Instructor, Jocelyn Tan demonstrating Isolation Core Option on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 2. Push Crosses For the second core workout, you’re going to lean forward and bring your chest down to the handlebars while keeping your core tight. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Next, lift your hands off the handlebar and do a cross by bringing your arms in front of you against each other to form a cross. As always, remember to keep your core engaged and keep your back straight, coming back down to the handlebars with your fingertips. SYNC CYCLE Instructor, Jocelyn Tan demonstrating Push Crosses Option on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 2a Advanced Option: If a greater challenge is what you are looking for in this workout, and you didn’t break a sweat in the Push Crosses consider this option. After performing a push cross, lift both your arms up and squeeze your core while paddling for a few seconds. SYNC CYCLE Instructor, Jocelyn Tan demonstrating Push Crosses Option on a Spin Bike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 3. Shoulder Taps Core Workout Shoulder taps are perfect for training and strengthening your core, shoulders, glutes, arms, and wrists. For this final workout of the series, we go back in the basic movement, placing your fingertips on Position 3 on the handlebars; keeping your back straight while activating and squeezing your core and your upper body. SYNC CYCLE Instructor, Jocelyn Tan demonstrating Shoulder Taps on a Spin Bike. • How To Set Up a Spin Bike

From understanding different parts of a spin bike, to setting it up for your first spin class, learn more about what makes a spin bike fit in this feature here PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Going to your first spin class can be daunting, especially in a room full of participants with significantly more experience. While the instructors and experienced riders will most likely be willing to show you the ropes, having some basic tips and know-how on spin bikes would definitely be useful and help you feel a little more prepared. With the help of Sync Cycle instructors Tricia Amanda Lee and Jocelyn Tan, find out more about how to set up the bike and learn about its different parts here in our feature on spin bikes. 1. Height of Saddle First on the list is how to adjust the height of the seat, also commonly known as the saddle. The appropriate setting is for the saddle to be at the height of your hip bone as you stand next to it. To adjust the height, simply unscrew the knob at the back of the bike and move it up and down. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 2. Distance between Saddle and Handlebar Once that is done, the next part of the bike to adjust is the distance between the saddle and the handlebars. For you to ride comfortably, the length between the two should be that of your forearm, with your hands balled into a fist. This time, look for a knob right underneath the saddle and loosen it to slide the saddle backwards and forwards. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 3. Height of Handle Bar Lastly, adjusting the height of the handlebars is also important! It should be either the same height as the saddle or just about an inch higher. Be careful while adjusting this, as the handlebar can be heavy. With one hand holding on to the handle, use the other to unscrew the knob at the front of the bike. Similar to the height of the saddle, you’ll be able to adjust the handlebar up and down. Sync Cycle Instructor, Tricia Amanda. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 4. Clipping On Once your bike is good to go, there is only one step left before you’re ready to start your spin journey. Once you’re comfortably sat on the bike, take note of the triangle on the pedals. It should always be facing forward before you clip your shoes in. To clip on, fit the cleat found underneath your spin shoes into the triangle on the pedal. The cleat will fit perfectly, and you should hear a ‘click’ when done correctly! Once that is done, you are all set to sweat it out. Sync Cycle Instructor, Tricia Amanda presenting several Cycling Shoes. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 5. Getting to know your bike Getting to know your bike is also essential to be able to follow the instructor during the class. Firstly, the handlebars have four positions. During different parts of the class, you may hear your instructor calling for you to place your hands on four other parts of the bar. Position one is the small, curved bridge-like part at the base of the bar. Positions two are the U-shaped cuffs at the sides. Positions three are the two tips of the bar and lastly, position four is a prominent, inverted U-shape at the top. The final thing to take note of is the resistance knob which is a red knob below the handlebar. This knob determines the intensity and how hard you would have to pedal. The higher the resistance, the more it trains your core and legs. Listen to your instructor for which settings are required as it may change throughout the class! Sync Cycle Instructor, Jocelyn Tan performing a Spin Class. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Remembering these tips will help you feel prepared but fret not, as there will always be help on hand! The most important thing is to enjoy the class. Feel empowered through movements and beats at Sync Cycle!

The ASICS SPORTSTYLE EX89 will debut at Culture Cartel 2022, the highly anticipated street culture convention from 1-4 December 2022 PHOTO: ASICS SINGAPORE 25 November 2022, Singapore - ASICS SPORTSTYLE announced the launch of the EX89 sneaker. This style was inspired by the GEL-EXTREME basketball shoe from 1989 and converted into a low-top silhouette. It was originally created by Toshikazu Kayano as his first design project with ASICS. Perhaps more well-known for his GEL-KAYANO running shoe series, this silhouette became a milestone that would pave the way with technology breakthroughs for ASICS footwear. PHOTO: ASICS SINGAPORE During the late 1980s, performance basketball shoes were primarily covered with white bases. The EX89 sneaker's ancestor - the GEL-EXTREME - became one of the first renegades to emerge with spirited colour blocking influenced by basketball team uniforms. This season, the shoe returns with its traditional leather construction that's met with team-centric colour palettes. The updated model will also be available with various renditions that are modified with modern lifestyle materials. We’re excited to help runners go faster than ever before as they take advantage of a shoe that includes some of the industry-first technology that has helped the likes of Peres Jepchirchir and Tamirat Tola smash World Records.” Peres Jepchirchir, reigning Olympic Champion and three-time World Record holder, commented: “During the winter months, in the lead up to big races in spring and championships in summer, that’s when you have to put in the hardest work in training. Having the right shoes on my feet allows me to maximize my training when it counts the most. Whenever I put on my ADIZERO SLs, I feel equipped to run fast.” PHOTO: ADIDAS SINGAPORE “adidas' Project PB” Brings Progress to the Masses To celebrate the launch of the ADIZERO SL, and with the aim of enabling more people to get faster and beat their PBs, adidas has launched Project PB, a unique resource that provides ambitious runners with an opportunity to feel success and experience winning.
