So I hope that I can take the momentum to tomorrow.” Yeo faces a tough challenge tomorrow as she takes on World No. 2 An Se Young, who recently won the 2023 Thailand Open. The head-to-head record between them stands firmly in favour of the South Korean at 5-1. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSEIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Exciting Matchups in the Men’s Singles The day's first men's singles match featured a gripping showdown between last week's Thailand Open champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu Wei. Wang staged a remarkable comeback in the second game, displaying his determination and seizing control after a tied score of 3-all. - Close to 3,000 pledge their commitment to Zero Waste cause at Income Eco Run 2023
Funds raised for the cause will go towards educating teachers and students on the importance of environment conservation as part of Income Insurance’s partnership with the Singapore Environmental Council Runners at this year's IER taking off at the Marina Barrage. PHOTO: INCOME ECO RUN Singapore, Sunday 11 June 2023 - A sea of orange swept through the Marina Barrage this morning as close to 3,000 runners took part in this year’s Income Eco Run (IER). This year’s IER, the 4th edition after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, took on an unprecedented run format where participants chose their preferred run distance between 3km and 21.1km. Guest of Honour Minister Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment led the second flag-off at 7.30am and ran 5km to support the cause. Collectively, a total distance of 27,122 kilometres was clocked by all participants at the IER. A family running for Zero Waste. PHOTO: INCOME ECO RUN This translates to S$30,000 raised for the Zero Waste cause as Income Insurance Limited (Income Insurance) has topped up the final amount, in addition to donating one dollar (S$1) to the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) with every kilometre clocked at the event. This year’s IER customised an inclusive run route that offered seven exit points, between 3km and 21.1km, to allow participants the flexibility to clock their distance-of-choice. This means that participants could choose to run and u-turn at either the 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km distance markers and complete their run of 3km, 5km and 10km respectively to return to the IER village. For those who chose to clock a longer distance, they had the option to exit at designated points located at either the 9km, 12km, 15km or 18km mark along the run route. Close to 1,000 runners completed the full 21.1km run back to the event village. Runners flagging off at the 5.30am first wave. PHOTO: INCOME ECO RUN With the flag off at the Marina Barrage, participants ran past iconic landmarks such as Gardens by The Bay, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, ArtScience Museum and the National Stadium, among others. Mr Andrew Yeo, CEO, Income Insurance, said, “It’s wonderful to see Singaporeans returning to champion the Zero Waste cause at the Income Eco Run this morning. To ramp up our efforts in waste management at the event, we took actions that were unprecedented at a mass run in Singapore." "We are proud to lead by example to inspire more Singaporeans and future events to take on a Zero Waste mindset and to practise reducing, reusing and recycling as we support Singapore’s transition to a Zero Waste Nation and bring about a more sustainable future for all of us.” Minister Grace Fu starting her 5km run towards Zero Waste at the Marina Barrage. PHOTO: INCOME ECO RUN Setting the benchmark for waste management at mass events With the Income Eco Run, Income Insurance demonstrated how waste management can be better managed at public events. Runners onsite received a light and handy reusable hydration cup that they used to refill water at hydration stations along the run route. For those who dropped or lost their cups, they could get their refreshments served in naturally compostable cups without plastic lining by Foopak, marking it a first for the IER or any mass runs in Singapore. The implementation of the reusable hydration cups for all participants is estimated to have saved more than 9,600 paper cups and in turn, a further reduction of 48 kg in waste produced. To further bolster the Zero Waste messaging, this year’s IER encouraged runners to run in their own orange t-shirts or past Income Eco Run race tees to promote reusing and recycling of existing clothes, while reducing the production of the IER 2023 event t-shirts, which is manufactured using recycled materials and made available only as an opt-in purchase. Minister Grace Fu interacting with Green Vendor 6003dp that repurpose plastic bottles into functional products at the Income Eco Run Village. PHOTO: INCOME ECO RUN With 47% of participants opting to wear their own orange t-shirt or past IER t-shirts, it saved 135 kg of materials that would have been used to produce the t-shirts. Running bibs were reduced by at least 30% in size to minimise material wastage. Additionally, IER also did away with giving out commemorative medals and instead, runners will receive e-certificates in recognition of their participation. This resulted in 169 kg of materials saved to produce commemorative medals. Runners can check if they have achieved their personal-best timings on the event website if they have successfully clocked out at the run’s designated exit points. Ms Isabella Loh, Chairman, Singapore Environment Council, said “By actively engaging communities, we can make significant progress together in our pursuit of a Zero Waste future. It is crucial for us to consistently set new standards for sustainable events especially in the area of waste management, demonstrating an unwavering commitment towards Net Zero. Thank you, Income Insurance for taking on a partnership approach to galvanise community actions via the Income Eco Run as an eco-friendly activity. Minister Grace Fu completing her 5km run towards Zero Waste at the Marina Barrage. PHOTO: INCOME ECO RUN We are humbled to partner Income Insurance as we share the same objective of fostering collaborations and generating innovative ideas to drive positive transformation for our environment. In this world of action, it is essential that we measure the impact we make and hold ourselves accountable for the results we achieve." Empowering Educators and Inspiring the Next Generation to lead a Zero Waste Lifestyle Zero Waste SG has also joined the IER as a green partner and will be working with Income Insurance and SEC to further drive the Zero Waste agenda. The funds raised from the run will be used to support Zero Waste initiatives by the SEC who will be working with Zero Waste SG to empower educators with the knowledge to raise environmental awareness in educational institutions and inspire the next generation of Eco warriors. This will be the first time SEC and Zero Waste SG are working together on such an initiative. #SportPlusSG #IncomeEcoRun
- Run Like a Woman: Athlete Media Mum Natalie Dau Launches Book on Global Running Day
Ultramarathoner aims to use book to help female runners optimise their running training based on their menstrual cycle, citing stigma causing limited conversations around the topic Athlete media mum Natalie Dau has launched her book "Run Like a Girl: Menstrual Cycle-Based Training for Optimal Performance" on Global Running Day. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY, SPORTPLUS.SG Singapore, 7 June 2023 - Athlete media mum and ASICS ambassador Natalie Dau has launched her book that is aimed at helping female runners optimise their running performance based on their menstrual cycle. Launching in conjunction with Global Running Day today, and on the back of a highly successful and impactful Run Like a Girl campaign, “Run Like a Woman: Menstrual Cycle-Based Training for Optimal Performance”, puts into action the science behind how women can become stronger, perform better and reach their full potential at any age and ability. Natalie Dau is an Ultramarathoner, brand spokesperson and social media influencer. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY, SPORTPLUS.SG Citing that stigma around the topic has led to less conversations and embarassment around the topic, Natalie shared that it was her wish that her book can help other female runners break down these barriers. "It is a topic that is not as widely discussed here in Asia as there is still embarrassment and stigma attached to it, but I hope these can help us have conversations that will better equip women in the sport moving forward," said Dau. Few female runners use the menstural cycle to guide and plan training, according to Dau's book. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY, SPORTPLUS.SG Surprisingly few female runners use the menstrual cycle to guide and plan their training. One study found that, out of 1,086 athletes from 57 sports, while 76% believed that their menstrual cycle could impact their training, 73% believed it could impact their competitive performance, and 68% reported having menstrual cramps, only 18% said they consider their menstrual cycle when planning their training or competitions. Variables like oxygen consumption, body temperature, lung function, hydration, muscle glycogen storage, fat and carbohydrate metabolism all play a part in performance. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY, SPORTPLUS.SG Other studies have also found that most athletes don’t consider their menstrual cycle in their training, especially the often-painful time of their periods, even though they acknowledge it affects their performance. The large fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone across the menstrual cycle significantly affect the female runner’s physiology. Variables such as oxygen consumption, body temperature, lung function, hydration, muscle glycogen storage, fat and carbohydrate metabolism, and exercise performance are all affected by the menstrual cycle. Natalie Dau hopes her book, launched on Global Running Day, will help more female runners optimise training. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY, SPORTPLUS.SG "What if we told you that the ups and downs of a woman’s hormonal roller coaster are really better understood as an ever-changing but predictable spiral?" "And that, with a little bit of knowledge and attention, you can analyze and even predict your running experience? Better still, you can apply this insight to your training, giving you clarity and control over your performance," Dau added. Natalie Dau is the co-author of the book "Run Like a Girl: Menstrual Cycle-Based Training for Optimal Performance". PHOTO: CHERYL TAY, SPORTPLUS.SG Run Like a Woman, based on Natalie Dau's latest book, shares the secrets of the menstrual cycle to show your readers how to train smarter and run stronger and faster. After a gruelling three-game encounter, Japan’s Yamaguchi emerged victorious, taking down the defending champion with a score of 18-21, 21-19, 21-17. The reigning two-time World Champion, who is celebrating her 26th birthday today, said after her victory: “Among all the players today, Pursarla was the one whom I have a greater number of losses as compared to wins against. As today is also my birthday, I am very happy that I was able to go against the odds and secure this win.” SHI Yu Qi (CHN) was dominant in the Men's Singles at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2023. PHOTO: SINGAPORE BADMINTON OPEN Shi Dominates in Men’s Singles Clash Fans were treated to an intense showdown in the men's singles category as two of the world’s top 10, Jonatan Christie and Shi Yu Qi, clashed on the court. With both players displaying exceptional talent, it was Shi who showcased his dominance, especially in the second game, emerging victorious with a score of 21-19, 21-12. Shi's performance established him as a force to be reckoned with in the tournament, and the 27-year-old said: “I think in the first round, both of us performed really well and were really close in terms of the points gained. However, at the final crucial part, he made mistakes before I did, allowing me to win the first round. For the second round, I seized the opportunity to secure the win.” Men's Doubles: Ben LANE and Sean VENDY (ENG) victorious after upsetting Alfian and Arianto. PHOTO: SINGAPORE BADMINTON ASSOCIATION Lane and Vendy Upset Alfian and Arianto in Men’s Doubles The biggest upset of the day occurred in the men's doubles category as the top seeds, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto from Indonesia, faced off against underdogs Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. In a battle that lasted 42 minutes, the British duo showcased their tactical prowess against the world number one, ultimately emerging victorious in straight sets with a score of 21-15, 21-18. Reflecting on the match, Lane remarked, “It is a great [win] for us, obviously the world no. 1. We had lots of close matches with them over the last three years. We were coming in feeling pretty confident, and we were playing well last week, where we were two points away from beating the winners." "We’re always confident that if we manage to play our game, we can definitely beat any player and go really deep in this tournament, which is hopefully what we’re going to do this week.” Fajar ALFIAN and Muhammad Rian ARDIANTO (INA) fell at the hands of Ben LANE and Sean VENDY (ENG) in the Men's Doubles at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2023. PHOTO: SINGAPORE BADMINTON ASSOCIATION Defending Champions Carnando and Marthin Triumph in Men’s Doubles Defending champions Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin from Indonesia faced a formidable challenge from the Thai pair of Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren. In an intense matchup that lasted an hour and 15 minutes, the Indonesians demonstrated their resilience by coming back from a game down to secure a hard-fought victory with a score of 16-21, 21-16, 21-16. Danish Duo Overcome Local Favourites in Mixed Doubles The mixed doubles category was one that was filled with intense battles and remarkable comebacks. The Danish duo Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje faced local favourites, Terry Hee and Jessica Tan. The thrilling encounter lasted over an hour, with the Danes displaying resilience and composure despite the strong home support for the Singaporeans to eventually clinch the win with a score of 20-22, 21-13, 21-13. Despite the loss, Tan focused on the positives and said: “The support from the home crowd was definitely really encouraging, and I believe that was one factor that helped us win to take the first game. Because, head to head, we have lost to this Danish pair four or five times, I believe." "So this is the first time we managed to push them to three games, so I think to take away the positives. This was a little breakthrough for us against them, especially on home ground. We just really like to thank our friends and fans for their support.” Team China Dominates in Both Mixed and Women’s Doubles In another mixed doubles match, top seeds Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong from China faced the duo of Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang from Chinese Taipei. - 10 Exercises You Can Do At Your Neighbourhood Fitness Corner feat. Jia En
Pilates, Barre and Indoor Cycling instructor Jia En shares tips on easy workouts you can do at Rivervale Drive Fitness Corner PHOTO: CHERYL TAY Did you know? Getting a good workout does not always mean hitting the gym. There are many convenient playgrounds and fitness corners right at your doorstep that could be used for your next workout! In this episode of Worth The Fit season 3, host Cheryl Tay links up with popular Pilates, spin and barre instructor Jia En to come up with 10 exercises that you can do at the fitness corner near you. Horizontal Ladder 1. Knee Ups Hold onto the handle bars, relax your shoulders, and slowly lift your knees to your chest. Try to go slow and steady, so you are not arching your back, and you are not swinging your body back and forth too much. Modified Windshield Wipers: This is an advancement from knee-ups. Have your knees close to your chest and bring them to your left and to your right. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY 2 Sit Ups Slide your feet underneath the bar and lie down on your back. With your hands behind your head, exhale as you come up. Use your abdominals to curl up and do not pull onto your neck when you do so. For progression, you can add a twist to your sit up. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY 3. Bulgarian Split Squats Place one leg on the bar and the other leg right in front of you. Very gently lower your body, press through your front foot and lift yourself up again. Chin Up Bar 4. Abs Crusher Sit down and have your hands supporting yourself on both sides. Squeeze your inner thighs together, and extend both legs towards the left and towards the right and then split them apart. Progression: Straighten your legs - to make it harder, you can move them up and down. To increase the difficulty even further, release both hands from supporting you and use just your core instead. Parallel Rails 5. Pistol Squat The pistol squat is a one legged squat. You can use the parallel bars or the handle bars for support. With just one leg supporting your weight, extend the other leg out and slowly squat down towards the floor. Use the same leg to stand up again, keeping it as straight as possible. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY 6. Lunge and Kick Holding onto the parallel bars, step back into a reverse lunge and use the same leg to kick forward as you come up. Progression: As you step forward add a little hop. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY 7. Plié and Curtsy Holding onto the handle bar, step open legged with your toes pointing out towards the side. Move into a squat and step one leg behind the other with your foot behind the other ankle into a curtsy. Bench PHOTO: CHERYL TAY 8. Tricep Dips Start with knees bent, placing your hands on the bench, and keep your elbows tight. Bend your elbows and then extend them again. At all times, keep your body as close to the bench as possible. Progression 1 : Straighten both legs. Progression 2 : Place one leg on top of the other. PHOTO: CHERYL TAY 9. Inclined Push-Ups with Chest Taps Placing both hands on the bench, keep your body in a long straight line. Drop your chest between your palms and avoid arching your back, keeping a neutral spine position. Each time you press down and up, lift one hand to tap the opposite shoulder and return to your original position again. 10 Step Ups Use one leg to step onto the bench, and bring your other knee to your chest at the top. Keep your body tall at all times, and you can use your arms to support you. Progression: Box jumps - starting in squat position jump to the top of the bench, stand up tall, and then come back down again. - Meet the Jump Rope Athlete turned Fitness Instructor: Cheryl Loh
Reaping the benefits of fitness ignited Fitness Trainer's aspirations to pass on knowledge PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG At the age of eight, Cheryl Loh's parents wanted her to join Chinese Dance CCA. What they did not count on was her stumbling upon the moving ropes at the back of her school hall. Intrigued by what all the other students were doing with skipping ropes, and the many different combinations and moves with a rope, she prompty gave up Chinese Dance for Jump Rope CCA. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG But just what made Loh make the transition into the life of a personal trainer and fitness instructor? It turns out that her time as a competitive jump rope athlete had plenty to do with it. "Being in a competitive sport like jump rope, we had to work on endurance, power, speed and agility and everything you can think of in terms of fitness," she said. She added: "I started competing for school in jump rope at 10 years-old, but when I joined international competitions, I really wanted to step up my own game so I looked at exercises I could find online to find out how I can improve my endurance, so that I don't feel like dying halfway through my routine." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Her resourcefulness and perseverance paid off when she saw noticed significant improvements to her performance within the team. "I tried the exercises, I studied on my own, from reading off the internet. And then I realised my performance did improve within my own team. We all did the same trainings, but I did something else on the side." Reaping the personal benefits of greater endurance got Loh really intrigued about fitness, and since then she felt inspired and wanted to share her new found knowledge with her team. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG "I move faster, I jump up higher, I don't feel like I am dying halfway through my routine," she said. "It brought me into the passion of educating my team, and I realised it was right, and I would like to pass on my knowledge to people so that they don't have to go through trial and error in their own fitness journeys." And the rest as they say, is history. #SportPlusSG #Fitness #JumpRope
- From weight loss to inspiring an online community: Fariq Azizan
"Jump Rope Ninja" finds inspiration in online Jump Rope community PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG What initially was a means to lose weight has turned out to be so much more for Muhammad Fariq Bin Azizan. The final year student at UniSIM, who goes by the instagram handle of @jumpropeninja, has inspired many in the community to pick up the sport of Jump Rope. He believes what draws people to the sport, is the fact that you can execute really cool combos and moves with a skipping rope. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG "As soon as you think you've learned everything, someone else posts a new combo online. And you think, oh wow I've got to learn that now. The community is great online," said Fariq. Apart from Jump Rope, he also does basic calisthenics: nothing too fancy, just the basic stuff like pull-ups, push-ups, dips and a bit of ab work. He sometimes incorporates it into his Jump Rope routines as well, in a circuit style training. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG So how many hours of practise does he put in daily into the sport of Jump Rope exactly? "I do about 30 - 45 minutes a day, maybe with a day's rest in the week. But I've also learnt to listen to my body, so if sometimes I have shin splints, I will stop for 2 weeks, and let my body rest." When he first started documenting his Jump Rope journey online in late 2017, he didn't think it would take off the way it has. Without a plan in mind, he just spammed his videos there. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Slowly he started to get followers, with more people expressing an interest in his jump rope routines and asking him how to execute some of the moves. He reflected, "I hope to inspire people to pick up a jump rope and get active. When I receive a message from someone telling me they've watched my videos, and now I'm able to do this and this, it makes me really happy." #SportPlusSG #Fitness #JumpRope
