- Chasing Dreams Beyond the Blueprint: Luke Chua’s Unwavering Journey with ASICS
Pro Triathlete Luke Chua on Resilience, Longevity, and Redefining the Singapore Sporting Dream PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM For Singapore’s national triathlete and multi-SEA Games competitor Luke Chua, the path of being a professional athlete is never linear. It is a series of pivots, set backs, and deep-seated commitments that demand a different kind of resilience. As we celebrate Global Running Month, we sat down with the ASICS athlete to discuss the evolution of his "why," and the reality of elite performance in Singapore, as well as the gear that powers his pursuit of greatness. From Singapore Schooling to the International Stage Luke Chua’s journey began at the Singapore Sports School, where he transitioned from competitive swimming to the demanding world of triathlon. His natural aptitude was clear from the start—after clocking a blistering nine-minute 2.4km run during his National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test, he was encouraged to try aquathlon, where he finished second in his very first race. Since then, Luke has become a force in Southeast Asian sports. He made his international breakthrough by winning a silver medal as part of the Mixed Relay Team at the 2019 SEA Games. His momentum continued through the years, culminating in a successful campaign at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, where he secured another silver medal in the men’s aquathlon team relay alongside teammates Bryce Chong and Tey Yi Jun. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ERIC CHEONG The Evolution of His Athlete’s "Why" 2025 was a year defined by its highs and lows for Luke—a rollercoaster that tested his resolve. Yet, when asked how his core motivation has evolved, he views his sport with the maturity of a long-term relationship. "My relationship with triathlon is much like how any other relationship works. It takes two hands to clap," Luke reflects. "Sometimes one has got to give and one has got to take. Triathlon took a lot out of me in 2025, and yes it has been rough, but there will come a time where the roles will be reversed and triathlon will give me what I deserve." This perspective is exactly what makes Luke a cornerstone of the ASICS athlete family. For the younger generation of runners and triathletes—the A-Racers—he offers a blueprint for longevity built on stubborn optimism. "In the battle arena, it’s not the man who is the strongest that should be feared, but the man who keeps getting up," he says. "So when we hit a roadblock, we just need to keep going." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Mastering the Craft: Logic Over Emotion Training at an elite level requires more than raw talent; it requires the wisdom to listen to one’s body. For Luke, the secret to longevity is removing the ego from the equation. This focus on logic over emotion is his secret to staying at the top. "It’s easy to make emotional decisions, so sometimes there is a need to take a step back and calm down to think rationally whether to push through or not. Having a coach is also crucial as it helps you see things from an outside perspective." "Being logical over emotional, and having a coach [is key]," says Luke. "It’s easy to make emotional decisions, so sometimes there is a need to take a step back and calm down to think rationally whether to push through or not. Having a good coach is also crucial as it helps you see things from an outside perspective." Defining a New Singapore Blueprint "Along the way, I wanted to prove people wrong in saying that you can’t do sports full-time," Luke explains. "I wanted to try and inspire the younger generation that you don’t have to follow the normal route of studying well and just going out to work—you have options." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH Performance Through Partnership Luke’s career has been supported by his long-standing partnership with ASICS, a brand that provides the technical edge required for multi-sport dominance. To him, being an ASICS athlete is synonymous with the pursuit of excellence. "It means to be able to be at the top of your game," he explains. "Repping ASICS and wearing the products comforts me in knowing I have got the best of the best equipment out there, so I can just go out there and perform." When it comes to his daily rotation, Luke leans on reliability. For his "boring, beautiful" recovery miles, he reaches for the ASICS GEL-NIMBUS™ 27 or the NOVABLAST™. As for the highly anticipated Novablast 6 landing in the AW26 collection, Luke is optimistic: "I’m hoping to see if there is any advancement in the foam. The NOVABLAST™ has had good foam in the past which I do a lot of miles on and have had no injury with, which is exactly what I need when training at high mileage." And when it’s time to race? He keeps it simple. "White," he says with a smile. "White is pro." Leaving a Legacy for Singapore Sport As he looks toward his future endeavors, Luke is clear about the legacy he hopes to leave for the next generation of Singaporean athletes. It’s a call to break the mold and define one’s own success. "You don’t have to follow the Singapore blueprint. If you have a dream, chase it, commit to it," Luke asserts. "Pursuing sport in Singapore might not be the most glamorous thing, but it sure will be fulfilling." From the track to the transition zone, Luke Chua continues to prove that with the right gear, the right mindset, and the courage to keep getting up, the "Singapore blueprint" is only the beginning of what is possible. - Shaun Goh Shatters Singapore National Road Mile Record at Big Mile Series
Singaporean Runner Secures First International Podium with Historic 4:18.6 Performance PHOTO: THE BIG SERIES 15 JUNE 2026, Utrecht, Netherlands – Singaporean distance runner Shaun Goh has officially etched his name into the history books once again, setting a new Singapore national record for the road mile at the prestigious Big Mile Series in the Netherlands. Clocking an impressive 4:18.6, Shaun secured a third-place finish, marking his first-ever podium appearance on the international stage. This latest achievement further cements his dominance across various road distances, adding to his existing national records in the 5km and 10km road categories. A Historic Milestone for Singapore Running Reflecting on his record-breaking performance, Shaun expressed a mix of satisfaction and ambition for future races. "It feels really good to get this record, especially by such a narrow margin. Considering it was my first attempt at a road mile, I definitely feel I can shave off a few more seconds, but overall I'm satisfied with my race execution," said Shaun. PHOTO: BETTERMENT SPORTS For the 29-year-old athlete, the achievement is deeply personal. "This one means quite a lot to me. For now, it's nice to hold the Singapore road records from the mile through to the 10km." Despite his success, Shaun remains humble and focused on the growth of the sport locally. "The road mile isn't a distance that's commonly raced by Singaporeans, so I suspect this record won't stand for too long as more athletes start attempting it. If anything, I'd be happy to see that happen, as that means the standard of Singapore running is rising." Earlier this month, he competed at the Puma Nitro Lange Laufnacht in Germany, clocking 14:45.29 in the 5000m. The performance saw him shave 10 seconds off his personal best, finishing just one second shy of Soh Rui Yong’s 2021 national record (14:44.21). Notably, Shaun’s time was faster than the gold medal-winning mark at the 2025 SEA Games (14:46.38), signaling his arrival as a major force in Southeast Asian middle and long-distance running. PHOTO: THE BIG SERIES Pioneering a Professional Future Shaun’s rapid ascent is supported by a groundbreaking partnership with Betterment Sports (BMS). In February, BMS signed Shaun as the inaugural athlete under its Professional Athlete Scheme, a pioneering initiative that bridges the gap between professional sports and full-time employment. Shaun Goh’s recent performance breakthroughs are bolstered by a new professional approach to his athletic career. Through a unique full-time athlete scheme, Shaun now benefits from the stability of a structured employment model that integrates competitive wages with comprehensive health and insurance benefits. This framework removes common logistical barriers, allowing him to focus his energy entirely on high-level training and international competition. Beyond financial and medical security, this model provides holistic career management, including the coordination of sponsorships and the development of his professional image. With the backing of partners like Embed Financial Group Holdings (EFGH), Shaun is provided with the consistent resources and support system necessary to push his physical limits. By bridging the gap between professional sports and career stability, this arrangement serves as a sustainable blueprint for Singaporean athletes aiming to excel on the global stage. #TeamSG #Athletics
- The Relentless Pursuit: How ASICS Athlete Rachel Longstaff is Redefining What It Means to Be a Modern Athlete
Finding Purpose in the Pursuit: Resilience, Data, and the Drive to Do Hard Things PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ISIS ANG In the competitive world of distance running and endurance sport, the spotlight often gravitates toward podium finishes and record-breaking times. But for Rachel Longstaff, a rising talent in the Singapore endurance scene and a key member of the ASICS athlete family, the true measure of an athlete lies in the quiet, unglamorous moments between the races. Her journey isn't defined by a straight line to the top, but by the intentional way she navigates the peaks and valleys of high-performance sport. After a testing 2025 season where injury forced a pivot away from her SEA Games qualification goals, Rachel hasn't just returned to training—she has returned with a sharper, more evolved perspective. As part of our Global Running Month series, we sat down with the multi-sport athlete—a driven competitor, to explore how she balances the hunger for "all-in" performance with the wisdom of the modern, data-informed athlete, and why her ultimate goal is to shift the narrative of what’s possible for Singaporean endurance athletes. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM Chasing More Than Just Personal Bests When injury disrupted her rhythm in 2025, it forced Rachel to strip her training back to its core motivation. Rather than becoming discouraged by the loss of competition time, she found a renewed clarity in her "why." "Setbacks and disruptions have a way of stripping everything back to the ‘why’. I’m still chasing performance goals, not because the times, results, and podiums are what I think ‘define’ me. But to prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to; and that consistency and dedication breed results." For Rachel, the evolution of her craft is now tied to a sense of community responsibility: "Another big why, now, is to prove to myself that I want to bring about and build something that lasts, represent a country I’m proud to call home, and show Singaporeans—specifically females—how much running and endurance sport can add to your life and experience of the world." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH The Data-Driven Competitor Balancing the drive to push limits with the wisdom of when to pull back is a delicate art. In 2026, Rachel has moved away from the "more is better" mentality, opting instead for a calculated, evidence-based approach to training. "I’ve become a bit of a data geek," she admits. "When your brain is saying ‘one more session’ but your heart rate or HRV data says otherwise, the data is boss. I use my wearable recovery tracker to detect early warning signs of non-functional overreaching, and I act on that information rather than trying to rationalise through it." This disciplined restraint is how she stays on track, ensuring that her energy is reserved for the moments that truly demand maximum output. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ERIC CHEONG Finding the Rhythm: Gear & The ‘Race Brain’ For Rachel, the right gear is more than just comfort—it is a psychological trigger that helps her transition into a competitive mindset. The Daily Workhorse: When it comes to logging the miles that build a base, she relies on the SUPERBLAST™ 3. "It does almost all of my unglamorous mileage: recovery runs, easy aerobic runs, and anything that isn’t a speed-session. I really do trust my Superblast 3s to keep me injury-free." The Next Frontier: Regarding the highly anticipated NOVABLAST™ 6, Rachel is eager to see the next evolution of her training rotation. "I’m excited to see whether the NOVABLASTS™ 6s refine the bounce, without sacrificing the endurance edge. They make easy runs feel super comfy, and that energy return makes the legs feel better than they otherwise would on a recovery day." The Psychology of Kit: While colour preferences take a backseat, functionality is non-negotiable. "When kit fits exactly right... that’s where your brain goes into ‘race brain’ mode. The minute I put on the ASICS cropped tops, I know I’m in track session or race mode." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM A Legacy in the Making Looking toward the future, Rachel is focused on leaving a mark that transcends her own athletic statistics. By embracing coaching and opening up about her own journey, she hopes to pave the way for others to follow. "I want to make people think bigger about what’s possible for Singapore in distance running. I want the legacy to be: she showed up, she did hard stuff, she didn’t shy away from the things that scared her, and she took it seriously. Even if one person laces up because of something I did or said, that’s a legacy I’d be proud of." Ready to start your own running journey? Join the community and experience the ASICS difference. Whether you're chasing a new PB or just finding your rhythm, stay tuned to our Global Running Month series for more insights from the rising stars of the running world. But her vision extends beyond just the physical act of running. As Rachel steps into this new chapter, she is finding that the most profound fulfillment comes from the connections she builds along the way. Whether it’s through the camaraderie of a track session or the mentorship she now provides to emerging athletes, she is intentionally crafting a space where growth is communal. Ultimately, Rachel’s path in 2026 is a testament to the power of showing up—not for the accolades, but for the love of the process. As she continues to refine her training and share her insights, she serves as a vital reminder that every stride, every recovery day, and every lesson learned from a setback is part of a much larger, and more rewarding, narrative. For Rachel Longstaff, the journey is only just beginning, and the Singaporean running community is all the better for it. Are you inspired by Rachel’s journey, and how does your "why" currently shape your own training approach? - On Squad Race Singapore Results and Recap: 56 Teams Take on the Ultimate 4x4 Spiral Relay Challenge As PRO Athletics Run Club Book Tickets to Los Angeles
56 Squads Battle Through High-Intensity Relay and Strategic Challenges at Perennial Business City for Exclusive LA Finale Spot PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / LIYANG 14 JUNE 2026, JURONG EAST, SINGAPORE – The spiral ramps of Perennial Business City transformed into an absolute battlefield yesterday as 56 squads in Singapore pushed their limits in the high-octane On Squad Race Singapore. In a thrilling display of speed and tactical genius, PRO Athletics Run Club (PARC) ultimately conquered the course to claim the top spot and an all-expenses-paid trip to the global finale in Los Angeles. The On Squad Race World Series will next make its stop in Jakarta next weekend before concluding its Southeast Asia tour in Bangkok the week after as part of the World Series. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / LIYANG On Squad Race Singapore: PARC Sprints to Victory in Thrilling Spiral Ramp Finale The atmosphere reached a fever pitch last night as the On Squad Race Singapore culminated in a spectacular final showdown. In a high-stakes "fight to the finish," eight squads battled for supremacy on the demanding spiral carpark ramp, with PARC ultimately securing the championship title and a coveted trip to the global finale in Los Angeles this September. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / LIYANG A Razor-Thin Margin for Glory The final was nothing short of a tactical masterclass, with the top of the leaderboard defined by intense competition where every second mattered. The parity among the top squads was remarkable, as five of the eight finalists shattered the seven-minute barrier, showcasing the growing depth of talent in the local running scene. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / LIYANG PRO Athletics Run Club (PARC) clinched the top spot with a blistering total time of 06:41.34. They were chased down to by TREX Athletics Club, who took a hard-fought second place in 06:48.34, overtaking and crossing the finish line just ahead of TRIBAL TRIATHLON SINGAPORE in third at 06:48.72. The precision of the relay exchanges was the difference-maker, with Team SportPlus finishing a competitive fourth in 06:53.51 and SUPERnatural+ rounding out the sub-seven-minute performances with a time of 06:59.92. The Anatomy of the Final Sprint The intensity of the final heat was palpable from the first lap. While every squad entered the race with high-octane energy, the "Final 8" forced runners to balance extreme cardiovascular output with the technical demands of the spiral ramp. In a thrilling display of speed and tactical genius, the teams navigated a complex scoring system that pushed athletes far beyond the traditional flat-road marathon experience. The event featured 56 teams of four athletes each, all vying for a spot in the finals through a rigorous qualifying and progression format. The course, a demanding spiral carpark ramp, required each runner to descend and ascend, covering approximately 550m to 570m per lap. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / LIYANG The intensity was evident during the Quarter-Finals, where squads like Zephyr RC and TRIBAL TRIATHLON SINGAPORE set the pace with dominant performances, both finishing with 210 round points, including 100 place points, 100 speed bonus points, and 10 Ramp Royalty bonus points. TREX Athletics Club and Team SportPlus also delivered impressive showings, securing 200 points each, winning their respective quarter finals of 8 squads each to progress to the semi-finals as favourites. Eventual champions PRO Athletics Run Club (PARC) progressed with 173 points while RUNDAYS FUNDAYS booked their spot with 170 points. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG The Strategy Behind the Speed The competition format was a ruthless test of strategy. Unlike conventional races, the scoring framework balanced raw speed with tactical depth. Each squad's total score was determined by a combination of race placement, overall "gun time" performance, and bonus points earned through pre-race "Squad Missions" and the in-race "Ramp Royalty" challenge, which rewarded the squad whose runner clocked the fastest lap time in each heat. "The energy on the ramp was unlike anything I've experienced—it’s not just about how fast you run, but how perfectly your team coordinates those exchanges," one participant shared. "You’re fighting gravity on the incline, but the adrenaline keeps you moving." Another athlete highlighted the importance of collective strategy: "We knew a single fast leg wouldn't carry us. It was all about the collective effort and playing the system, especially with the Ramp Royalty points on the line. " PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Road to the Semifinals As the event progressed, the field narrowed. By the end of the Quarter-Finals, the stage was set for the Semifinalists. The road to the semi-finals saw the 56 squads battling it out across 7 heats of 8, with 32 progressing before another round of elimination began for the top 16 teams to book a semi-final berth. As the event concluded with the Podium Party, the consensus was clear: the On Squad Race has set a new benchmark for competitive team relay events in Singapore. The event concluded with a well-deserved Podium Party, celebrating not just the champions, but the collective resilience of all 56 squads that participated throughout the day. With the Singapore leg now in the books, the focus shifts to Los Angeles, where the winning team will carry the torch for Singapore in the series finale. Congratulations to all participants for a day of unforgettable racing. #OnSquadRace #DreamOn #RealEnergy
- Singapore’s Dynamic Duo Kenneth Seet and Lim Jia Jun Take Aim at the PUMA HYROX World Championships in Stockholm
Two Fathers, One Mission: Balancing Family, Careers and Elite Competition, the Singapore Duo Chase HYROX World Championship Personal Bests PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG As the global HYROX community converges on Stockholm’s iconic Strawberry Arena for the 2026 PUMA HYROX World Championships, two familiar faces from Singapore’s rapidly growing hybrid fitness scene will proudly carry the nation’s flag onto one of the sport’s biggest stages. For Kenneth Seet and Lim Jia Jun, qualifying for the World Championships was never guaranteed. Both are fathers, professionals, coaches, and athletes juggling packed schedules, family commitments, and relentless training blocks. Yet through discipline, partnership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, they have earned their place among the world's best in the Men’s Pro Doubles division. The Moment Everything Changed Their journey to Stockholm began nearly a year ago when they secured victory and a coveted World Championship qualification slot. For Kenneth, the achievement exceeded even his own expectations. “I actually couldn’t believe it. I knew that we were in good shape and would do a good time, but to come in first and qualify for the World Championships in the first race of the season was a huge bonus.” Jia Jun recalls the moment with equal disbelief. “It was a surreal moment and a testament to all the hard work and training that we had put in together leading up to the race. I didn’t even realise that we had qualified for the World Championships until moments later.” What followed was a year of growth, racing experience, and refinement as they continued competing together across local and international HYROX events. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH Built on Discipline and Trust Ask either athlete what makes their partnership work, and the answer goes far beyond fitness. “The most important thing is that both of us have similar mindsets and attitudes,” says Kenneth. “We will put in all the work needed and work extremely hard to get what we want and to be the best versions of ourselves.” Jia Jun agrees, pointing to discipline as the foundation of their success. “Both of us being fathers and having our own life and work commitments, we had to prioritise our workouts and what we needed to focus on each session. Doubles racing requires both of us to play according to our strengths, and that’s what we focused on.” That shared understanding has translated into a formidable doubles partnership. Their race strategies are carefully planned around individual strengths, while years of training and competing together have built the chemistry required to make split-second decisions during competition. “We focus on pre-planned work splits based on strengths, rather than a blind 50-50 split,” Kenneth explains. “We communicate well during the race and adjust based on how each of us are feeling.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG More Than Personal Achievement While qualifying for a World Championship is a milestone for any athlete, both men recognise the significance of representing Singapore on the international stage. For Kenneth, the experience has fundamentally changed his perspective. “The reality of qualifying for the World Championships has changed my mindset from being driven by personal milestones to embracing the immense privilege of representing Singapore on the global stage.” The veteran athlete also hopes his journey resonates with everyday Singaporeans. “I’m just an ordinary dad with a full-time job, but if you are committed to something, anything is possible.” For Jia Jun, competing at a World Championship remains a dream he is still processing. “First World Championships, so it’s definitely still something that I haven’t gotten over. The standards of racing in HYROX have improved massively in the past year, and that has challenged me to better myself and make sure we can give it a good run against the best in the world.” The Grind Behind the Scenes Their preparation for Stockholm has been anything but straightforward. Kenneth spent the latter part of 2025 rehabilitating an injury before rebuilding his fitness through a combination of HYROX-specific work and marathon training. “We focused a lot on our engine and strength,” he says. “I’m also currently in the middle of a marathon training block, which I believe will help my overall engine and fitness.” Jia Jun’s preparation has been equally methodical. Having already completed multiple HYROX events this season, including a demanding triple-race weekend at HYROX Singapore, he has been able to fine-tune his training approach heading into the championship. “We’ve had two races this year as a lead-up to the World Championships and managed to test what works for us and what doesn’t,” he explains. Balancing elite-level training with family and professional responsibilities remains one of their greatest challenges. Kenneth admits there have been plenty of early mornings and sleep-deprived sessions. “Some days, due to work, I’m surviving a hard training session at 5am on four to five hours of sleep. It hasn’t been easy. But consistency is the most important act. Showing up day in and day out—that’s where progress is made.” Jia Jun credits strong support systems and adaptability. “A supportive wife, prioritising my time, and it definitely helps that I work in a gym. I also emphasise listening to my body and being flexible with my training.” Ready for the Biggest Stage The PUMA HYROX World Championships will transform Stockholm’s Strawberry Arena into the epicentre of global hybrid racing, with thousands of spectators and the sport’s fastest athletes under one roof. Neither athlete is intimidated by the occasion. “Run our own race,” Kenneth says simply. “We’ll be racing with the best in the world, so we have to stick to our paces and not blindly follow the crowd.” For Jia Jun, the atmosphere is something to embrace rather than fear. “You live for these moments. Being a former national wushu athlete and having to compete in front of a crowd all alone, the adrenaline is something that helps me race hard and do the best that we possibly can.” As for race-day goals, both remain grounded. “We can never change how our competitors do,” Jia Jun says. “We can only focus on bettering our own times. A personal best from our previous race would be great.” Kenneth shares a similar outlook. “I really just want to soak up the atmosphere, empty the tank, leave it all out on the floor, and do Singapore proud.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Flying the Flag for Singapore Beyond their own performance, Kenneth and Jia Jun recognise that their appearance in Stockholm represents the continued rise of HYROX and hybrid fitness in Singapore. The local community has expanded dramatically in recent years, with growing participation, stronger competition, and increasing international representation. “It’s amazing to see the sport growing not just globally but also in Singapore,” says Jia Jun. “We are blessed to be able to represent the country at this upcoming World Championships, and I believe there will be a much bigger representation from Singapore next season.” For Kenneth, the message is simple. “As long as you put your mind to something and work hard, you will be able to achieve your goals.” When they step onto the competition floor in Stockholm, they will be chasing personal bests and testing themselves against the world’s elite. But they will also be carrying the hopes of a growing Singaporean HYROX community—one that sees in Kenneth Seet and Lim Jia Jun proof that dedication, discipline, and partnership can take ordinary people to extraordinary places. #HYROXWorld #HYROXSG #KennethSeet #LimJiaJun
- Chasing Horizons: How 24-Year-Old SEA Games Marathoner Richard Heng is Disrupting the Southeast Asian Marathon Distance Running Ecosystem
Disrupting the Status Quo: From a Five-Hour Marathon Debut to the International Stage - Inside Richard Heng's Rapid Ascension, Elite Training Philosophy, and ASICS Footwear Fueling His Journey PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH The marathon has long been considered a veteran’s game—a discipline where peak performance is traditionally unlocked after years of grueling, high-volume aerobic accumulation. But 24-year-old Singapore marathon runner Richard Heng is dismantling that narrative, one stride at a time. Richard’s transition from a casual road runner to an international-level competitor was underscored by a breakthrough performance at the ASICS Gold Coast Marathon last year which secured a coveted spot for the 2025 SEA Games marathon in Thailand, firmly disrupting the regional distance-running hierarchy. Now in 2026, Richard is balancing the immense weight of national representation with the pure, uncomplicated joy of running. Reflecting on his breakthrough year, he notes how his underlying motivation has stayed anchored despite his elevated status. "When I first started running, every run felt exciting because I was constantly discovering a new side of myself," Richard shares. "The feeling is still the same, and that keeps me going till this day." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH From a 5-Hour Debut to the Elite Stage Richard’s path to SEA Games marathon qualification wasn't born out of a decorated childhood track-and-field background. By his own admission, his elite trajectory began relatively late, making his current timeline all the more astonishing. Competing in the SEA Games marathon was not something that Richard would have expected 7 years ago, after finishing his first marathon in more than 5 hours he admits. "It showed me that the limits I once believed in were self-imposed, and small checkpoints in the right direction can lead to massive outcomes in the long run. This year, I’m still taking baby steps, to becoming not just a faster but a stronger, more competitive athlete each day." This rapid progression required a massive shift into high-level athletic training over the past three years. Pushing the boundaries of human endurance at age 24 requires a delicate, highly mature relationship with recovery—a lesson Richard had to learn through pure consistency. "All my training builds so far has taught me that progress isn't simply about working harder, but keeping it consistent over long periods of time," he explains. "I wouldn’t consider myself one that listens to my body. But over time, I realised that adaptation happens when training and recovery work together. So although I do push my body over the limit occasionally, I also make sure I also push my recovery protocols to the maximum." "The balance of pushing yourself to the limit, the recovery after the session, and knowing when to say stop is essential to making improvements slowly but steadily," he says. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH The Power of the ASICS Partnership and Community Support As a standout young signing within the ASICS running community, Richard views his sponsorship as far more than just a gear endorsement. For him, the brand provides the psychological safety net required to handle elite-level athletic pressure. "Being an ASICS athlete means being part of a community that allows me to express my abilities freely, giving me the support to pursue my dreams without pressure from anyone but myself," Richard remarks. "Whether it's access to world-class equipment, opportunities to connect with fellow athletes, or simply having a team that believes in my journey, this is a partnership that allows me to focus on becoming the best version of myself as both an athlete and a person." Despite his rapid ascension, Richard remains deeply grounded within his local training circles, heavily crediting peers like fellow elite Singapore distance runner Shohib Marican for guiding his early marathoning blocks. "The majority of the A-Racers are friends whom I meet and train with quite frequently. I personally have learned a lot from them as well, particularly Shohib, who offered important guidance to me in the past 2 years of my journey. But I guess I can offer a few tips when they do end up moving to the marathon." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH Inside the Shoe Rotation: Logging the Recovery Miles An elite marathon training block demands a meticulous footwear strategy. To absorb the high weekly mileage required for international competitions, Richard leans heavily on a distinct everyday shoe rotation to protect his legs during non-workout sessions. Shoe Model Role in Rotation Key Performance Characteristic ASICS NOVABLAST™ 5 Daily Workhorse / Recovery Extreme versatility, reliable cushioning for aerobic bases ASICS MEGABLAST™ Heavy Cushioning / Cruising Maximum energy return, premium comfort ASICS NOVABLAST™ 6 (Upcoming) Future Trainer Infused with high-end race foam technology "The NOVABLAST™ 5 has been a constant in my rotation. It's the only shoe I keep at my doorstep and not the cabinet for when I just want to get in a run," Richard reveals. "Whether it's an easy recovery run after a hard workout or a steady aerobic session, these 'boring' miles are actually where most of the work gets done, and having a reliable shoe makes a huge difference." Looking toward the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2026 gear drops, Richard is particularly eager to see how the next generation of daily training footwear evolves. "One thing that caught my attention is the introduction of FF TURBO™ PLUS cushioning within the midsole of the NOVABLAST™ 6. That’s the foam that is currently only found in the MEGABLAST™, a shoe I really love, so seeing elements of that trickle into a daily trainer is exciting. The NOVABLAST™ series has always made everyday running feel more enjoyable due to its versatility—it becoming even more efficient and responsive can allow me to spice up my runs even more." Mental Prep and Race-Day Psychology When it's time to swap out the daily trainers for high-performance carbon-plated race shoes, Richard's mental prep narrows down to a specific, almost meditative gear ritual rather than visual aesthetics or bright colourways. "Race-days are the only time I match the colour of my socks and shoes," he shares. "There's something about me focusing on putting on matching socks and shoes, lacing them up right before the race. It's less about a specific colour and more about feeling those pieces come together. The moment I put them on, I know it's time to let my mind and body get to work." Shaping a New Future for Singapore Athletics While personal records and major games podiums are immediate goals, Richard is playing the long game. At just 24 years-old, his ultimate legacy is centered around building a infrastructure that encourages young local talent to shatter conventional performance ceilings. "So far, my running journey has largely been about seeing how far I can take my own performance. But when I look further ahead, I hope one day I can reach a level where I can inspire many more," Richard reflects. "In a long time to come, I hope to contribute towards building an ecosystem which athletes can seek out changes and venture out of the norms to chase their potential. With that kind of support in place, young Singaporean runners can then dream bigger than what people traditionally think is possible, and that would be something I'm very proud of." - Breaking the Elite Mold: How Late-Bloomer Cloey Wong is Rewriting the Script as an ASICS A-Racer
From Track "Obsession" to Elite Podium: Cloey Wong’s Fast-Tracked Journey with the ASICS A-Racers Cloey Wong in a photoshoot at ASICS' Global Running Day brand day. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN When people talk about performance running in Singapore, the narrative usually follows a predictable arc: track-and-field stars who have been training since their secondary school cross-country days. But Cloey Wong is rewriting that script. As a late developer who only found her stride during university, Cloey has experienced a meteoric rise in the local distance running scene. Last year, she sent shockwaves through the community by clinching a spectacular 4th place finish in the Elite 21.1km category at the Great Eastern Women’s Run (GEWR), crossing the line just behind local powerhouse Jasmine Teo. Proving that breakthrough performance was no fluke, Cloey recently took her talents to the international stage. At the Alliance Bank Borneo International Marathon 2026, she dominated the Women's Open 10KM category. Clocking in with a phenomenal net time of 00:39:17, her blistering pace not only secured her the category victory but crowned her the overall women's champion for that distance. Her fierce competitive drive and rapid ascendancy caught the eye of sportswear giant ASICS, who officially signed her to their prestigious ASICS A-Racers programme this year—an initiative dedicated to elevating Singapore's next generation of competitive running talent. Cloey Wong (centre) within touching distance of the podium of last year's Great Eastern Women's Run with Jasmine Teo (left) and Rachel See (right). PHOTO: GREAT EASTERN WOMEN'S RUN From "Acceptable Obsession" to Elite Performance Unlike athletes who felt the pressure of early competitive success, Cloey's catalyst wasn't a podium finish or a single dramatic race. Instead, it was born out of the structured rhythm of university life. "There was not one particular race or defining moment for me," Cloey shares. "It was more of a gradual realisation during my first year of university, when I was preparing for the Road Relay event in the annual Inter Hall Games." While many runners view high-intensity track sessions as a necessary evil, Cloey fell in love with the data-driven progress of speedwork. "As strange as it may sound, I genuinely enjoyed the grind of interval training around the track. I enjoyed having something that kept my days structured and it felt like an acceptable 'obsession'. There was something very addictive about that process—the idea that if I showed up consistently and gave my best, I could become a little stronger and faster each time. So after Year 1, I decided to take it seriously and give myself a chance at this new sport." Cloey Wong poses for the camera. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN Navigating the Hardest Mile: Overcoming Long-Term Injury Cloey’s rapid progression wasn't without its hurdles. Shortly after discovering her potential, she was sidelined by a severe injury that tested her psychological resilience as much as her physical strength. "I was injured quite badly for more than a year, and during that period, running slowly became something that gave me more stress than enjoyment," she admits. "It was difficult because the sport had once brought me so much excitement, but at that point, I felt physically limited and mentally drained." Rather than forcing her way through burnout, Cloey took the unconventional step to step away completely—a decision that ultimately saved her athletic career. "Eventually, I decided to take a break as I also wanted to experience life outside of running, which I am glad I did because it gave me space to reset and be more convinced that this is a sport I want to pursue. After some time away, there was still a voice at the back of my mind telling me that it was too early to give up. I felt that I had barely scratched the surface of what I could do in the sport." Returning to the road meant abandoning the ego and focusing entirely on gradual, compassionate rehabilitation. "Coming back required a lot of patience. I had to let go of the need to rush back to where I was before and instead focus on rebuilding slowly.” Cloey Wong ahead of an athletes' photoshoot on ASICS' brand day. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN “That setback taught me to listen to my body, protect my love for the sport, and be more compassionate with myself. In a way, it made me stronger because I came back with a healthier mindset and a deeper appreciation for running." The Daily Balancing Act of an A-Racer How does a high performance A-Racer half-marathoner balance a demanding schedule while squeezing out peak physiological performance? For Cloey, the secret lies in flawless preparation and high-quality recovery habits. Cloey Wong's Daily Routine Blueprint Focus & Strategy The Night Before Foam rolling, targeted stretching, and setting out gear to minimize early morning friction. Pre-Dawn High-intensity training session completed before sunrise while the city sleeps. 9-to-5 Workday Strict emphasis on baseline nutrition, consistent hydration, and proactive energy management. Post-Work Recovery Treating sleep and rest as non-negotiable building blocks rather than afterthoughts. "The day really starts the night before," Cloey explains. "When training has to fit around a full-time schedule, preparation becomes very important. I try to sleep early, foam roll, stretch, and make sure everything is ready so that the next day is just 'go-go-go'." Cloey doesn't view this rigid scheduling as a sacrifice, but rather as an automated part of her identity. "The goal is to build it into a routine where it should just be my lifestyle and where I don't have to think too much about it, as all these tiny habits should come naturally to me." Cloey Wong racing in the 2025 Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon National Championships. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ERIC CHEONG The ASICS Advantage: Smart Training & Gear Integration Joining the ASICS family has drastically evolved Cloey’'s approach to the sport. Being backed by a top-tier running brand means having access to the precise support required to sustain high-volume training blocks. When it comes to logging her weekly base mileage, Cloey leans heavily on one specific model in her shoe rotation: the fan-favourite ASICS NOVABLAST™. "I really enjoy wearing the NOVABLAST™ for recovery runs as it provides a good balance between good cushioning without being too chunky," she notes. And looking forward into the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2026 (AW26) gear launches, her expectations for the highly anticipated ASICS NOVABLAST™ 6 are simple yet vivid: "I am excited to feel as if I am running on pillows." Beyond the advanced footwear technology, the partnership has catalyzed a massive mental shift in how she views herself as a competitor. "Joining the ASICS family has given me the opportunity to explore different gear and better understand what suits my own training needs. Being part of this programme has made me more intentional about understanding myself as an athlete in a highly individualistic sport. I have learned to pay closer attention to what my body needs, what gives me confidence, and what helps me perform sustainably." Cloey Wong (left) does battle with Jasmine Teo in the 21.1km Elite Category of the 2025 Great Eastern Women's Run. PHOTO: GREAT EASTERN WOMEN'S RUN Inspiring the Next Generation: Delusion or Internal Belief? As Global Running Month shines a spotlight on the sport's community leaders, Cloey hopes her journey from a casual university runner to an elite ASICS A-Racer serves as a unique blueprint for newcomers. Her main advice? Stop looking outward for validation. "The impact I hope to make on the next generation of Singapore runners is to show that confidence has to come from within—it can even come from nowhere, which some might call delusion," Cloey says with characteristic candor. "Validation from others or results can help, but at the end of the day, you need to be grounded enough mentally and emotionally to believe in yourself first." For Cloey, local running shouldn't just be measured by podium finishes or digital personal bests on a screen. "I hope new runners can learn to trust their own journey and stay patient with their progress. Running teaches you a lot about emotional regulation, and I hope to encourage others to see the sport as more than just chasing timings. It is also about building the kind of mindset that carries into the rest of your life." - Embracing the Evolution: Singapore Marathoner Melvin Wong on Longevity, the ASICS Family, and the New Era of Running
Singapore’s Marathon Veteran Talks Longevity, Data-Driven Training, and Passing the Torch to Singapore's Next Generation of Runners Melvin Wong reacts after completing the TCS Sydney Marathon half-marathon in 2023. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN For more than a decade, Melvin Wong has been a definitive pillar of Singapore’s elite distance running community. From representing the nation at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to serving as the Singapore Ambassador for the TCS Sydney Marathon, now an Abbott World Marathon Major; Melvin has consistently bridged the gap between high-performance athletics and community inspiration. Coming off a stellar 2025 season — which he capped off with a spectacular first-place finish in the Veteran’s category at the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Half Marathon — the ASICS athlete is rewriting the rulebook on running longevity. We sat down with Melvin to discuss his transition into a new chapter of performance, his philosophy on mentorship for the next generation of Singapore runners, and a sneak peek into the gear keeping him moving. Melvin Wong had a stellar 2025, capping it off with a first place finish in the masters category at the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon. PHOTO: ASICS MALAYSIA A Long Time Coming: Rewriting Personal Bests in 2025 While 2025 ended on a podium high, the journey started in the trenches of late 2024. After enduring frustrating setbacks, including a DNF at the Berlin Marathon and a 2:46 finish in Valencia, Melvin entered the new year with deep fitness but nothing to show for it on paper. Then came a historic seven-week block. "In early 2025, things started to pick up when I put in a good block of training and re-wrote my PBs for the Half and Full Marathon within a 7-week block," Melvin shares. "My last HM PB was set in 2015, so it was really a long time coming to reset that." Melvin Wong in full flight in Sydney at the 2023 TCS Sydney Marathon. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN Melvin Wong's 2025/2026 Career Transition: [Late 2024: Setbacks] ──> [Early 2025: Dual PB Breakthrough] ──> [2026: The Year of Experimentation] While he initially hoped to secure one final appearance at the SEA Games, his body resisted the grueling mileage required for low - 2:30 marathon times. Rather than forcing the issue, Melvin showed the wisdom of a seasoned veteran: he went back to the drawing board to enjoy the sport, bringing out his best at marquee events like the KL Standard Chartered Marathon and the ASICS META : Time : Trials. 2026: The Year of Experimentation for the Everyday Working Adult For 2026, Melvin is turning his focus toward a fascinating new chapter centered on data, science, and smart training. Describing it as a "year of experimentation," he is shifting away from pure, exhausting mileage to focus on a holistic blueprint specifically curated for working professionals in Singapore. 1. Terrain Variety: Switching long runs back to the undulating, technical trails of MacRitchie Reservoir to bank raw strength in the legs. 2. Next-Gen Sparring: Training with some of Singapore's youngest and fastest rising runners to inject speed and fire back into his legs. 3. Sports Science Protocols: Partnering with an up-and-coming sports trainer to build a cutting-edge protocol leveraging precise fueling, hydration permutations for hot-weather racing, and structured strength training. "I am excited about the prospect to unlock greater benefits of a well-rounded training program that does not have to depend on just mileage alone to improve," Melvin says. "It will hopefully be near completion end of 2026, specially curated for a working adult living in Singapore." Melvin Wong in the men's 10000m event at the 86th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH Navigating a Changing Era: "Stay Humble, Stay Hungry" We are living in an unprecedented era for distance running. Records that once stood as immovable walls are tumbling weekly. Earlier this year, Kenya's Sebastian Sawe shattered the two-hour barrier at the London Marathon with a mind-boggling 1:59:30, while John Korir clocked a 2:01 course record at the Boston Marathon. As a senior athlete and blueprint for the younger generation of ASICS A-Racers, Melvin views this hyper-fast era with a grounded perspective. "Times are important, but how you get there matters more," Melvin reflects. "The people who were part of your journey will remember how you treat them and make them feel during your ascent." For the next generation looking to replicate his longevity, Melvin offers two timeless golden rules: 1. Stay Humble: "Be humble enough to prepare yourself sufficiently for your races. Once complacency sets in, the cracks will form." 2. Stay Hungry: "Be that sponge that continues to seek out new ways of improving yourself, consulting with other athletes, coaches, and professionals." This approach to continuous learning has kept Melvin at the top of his game, frequently adapting training methods from his previous background in triathlon to prolong his elite running career. Melvin Wong poses for the camera ahead of the MAGIC SPEED Relay in Sentosa. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH The ASICS Partnership: Promoting a Sound Mind in a Sound Body For Melvin, representing ASICS has evolved far beyond chasing podium finishes and collecting high-performance gear. It is a relationship rooted deeply in the brand’s foundational philosophy: Anima Sana In Corpore Sano (A Sound Mind in a Sound Body). "ASICS has always been that brand most distance athletes would like to associate with," Melvin explains. "In Southeast Asia, they are looking to form a family-based approach to their sponsored runners. My partnership with ASICS evolved from producing high-performance results to representing the brand in getting engaged with the local run community through marquee events like the META : Time : Trials, ASICS Relay and MAGIC SPEED™ RELAY." This deep trust has allowed Melvin to master the delicate balance between pushing limits and recovering gracefully. After years of high-level output, he notes that the risk of being sidelined by injury far outweighs the short-term thrill of over-training. "The ability to run continuously each day is far more important for me, rather than to push beyond my limits and get injured." The Sneaker Rotation: Trusting the Daily Workhorse When it comes to logging the "boring, beautiful, recovery miles" that build a marathoner’s engine, Melvin points directly to one legendary silhouette in his shoe rotation. "The NOVABLAST™ has to be that magical, do-it-all shoe," Melvin says without hesitation. "I have the NOVABLAST™ 5 and am loving every moment in it." Having laced up the line since its second iteration, the franchise has become a non-negotiable anchor for his weekly training blocks. As ASICS prepares for its highly anticipated AW26 launches, Melvin is already looking forward to what’s next. "I really loved how that trampoline effect always remains constant in the NOVABLAST™ line-up," he notes. "It is always a mainstay in my shoe rotation because of how they allow me to bank miles while continuing to protect my feet, week in, week out. They continue to cushion my every step to uplift my training and to perform in races. It would be impossible to have a shoe rotation without the NOVABLAST™, quite frankly." As for the upcoming NOVABLAST 6? "I am looking forward to an even more energetic feel in that trampoline effect!" Melvin Wong in action at the National Stadium. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH Gear Psychology: The Kit That Locks It In Beyond the foam and rubber underfoot, Melvin admits that mindset can often be triggered by what you wear. When it's time to transition from high-volume training to a high-stakes starting line, his psychological armor of choice is simple. "I always feel lighter and faster when I put on the elite race singlet each season," he says. "It definitely makes me feel focused and zone in on the race." An Accidental Athlete Building Lasting Impact With over a decade spent at the vanguard of the local running scene, one might expect Melvin to define his legacy through medals, podium finishes, or shaving minutes off a clock. Instead, his perspective remains remarkably refreshing and deeply human. "I was an accidental athlete to begin with," Melvin smiles. "I spent my first 20 years in books and band music before starting my second life in sports, especially running. I don’t have an audacious legacy to leave behind, but if I want to know whether my story has created an impact, I would go back to my roots—my family and loved ones." For Melvin, the ultimate finish line isn't about being remembered by the crowds, but about lighting a path for those closest to him. "I hope my running journey has provided a beacon of light during times of darkness, and that my children—and others—speculate to take a leap of faith and find their path to greatness, just like how I accidentally stumbled into mine." It is a philosophy that perfectly mirrors the words of one of sport's greatest icons, a quote Melvin holds close as he steps into this next chapter of his career: "Leave the game better than you found it. And when the time comes for you to leave, leave a legend." — Kobe Bryant. With his eyes firmly set on the future, a smarter sports science blueprint in development, and a continuous hunger to learn, Melvin Wong is doing exactly that—redefining what it means to be a modern master of the long game. - The Average Joe Chasing Milliseconds: How Raymond Sng Rebuilt His Mindset to Help Define the New ASICS A-Racers Era
From a 27-minute 5K burnout to a sub-17 minute elite contender. Discover how ASICS A-Racer Raymond Sng rebuilt his mindset with TREX and the SUPERBLAST™ 2 ahead of the Gold Coast Marathon. Raymond Sng at the Gold Coast Marathon half-marathon in 2025. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Every runner remembers the moment they stopped just "going for a jog" and started chasing milliseconds. For rising Singapore distance runner Raymond Sng, that moment arrived with a dose of brutal honesty. Early in his journey, a coach told him flatly that he didn't possess the raw talent or natural aptitude for distance events. "He turned out to be right," Raymond reflects, without a shred of bitterness. "But despite falling short, that cross-country race was the first time I could see the backs of all the elite athletes in front of me. They were faster, but they were in sight. That kickstarted my desire to follow in their footsteps." Today, Raymond is proving that natural talent is highly overrated. As a headline athlete in the newly launched ASICS A-Racer programme—a high-performance initiative designed to elevate the local running community—he is redefining what it means to be an elite competitor in Singapore. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH From a 27-Minute 5K to the SG Open: The Road Back from Burnout Raymond’s trajectory looks smooth on paper, but his reality has been defined by the classic, grueling balancing act of a local athlete. After graduating from university in 2023, the sudden shock of transitioning into a full-time career, managing family responsibilities, and losing his routine led to severe burnout. He walked away from the sport entirely. When he finally decided to lace up his running shoes again after a year-long hiatus, the fitness he had lost hit him like a wall. His first 5K time back was 27 minutes. Raymond's 6-Month High-Performance Turnaround: [Hiatus Recovery] 5K Time: 27:00 [6 Months Training] 5K Time: Sub-17:00 (Qualified for SG Open 10K) "Breaking the momentum of sport made it extremely difficult to restart," Raymond admits. "Every session felt like a painful reminder of the fitness that was lost to time and weakness. Waiting for something to change without putting in effort to make a difference is akin to having faith but not taking a leap." Raymond set a new personal best in the 86th Singapore Open. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ALDRICH GOH His saving grace wasn't a sudden burst of solo inspiration; it was community. Training alongside his brothers at TREX Athletics Club, he found an unshakeable village. Even when he couldn't keep up with the workouts, they kept showing up for him. Within six short months of disciplined grinding, he transformed his 27-minute 5K into a blazing sub-17 minute 5K, qualifying for the prestigious Singapore Open 10K championships. "Through my own trials and tribulations, I hope to show every budding athlete that you do not have to be the most talented person out there to get somewhere. High performance need not always be an elusive concept only accessible by elites." The Daily Grind: Preparing for the Gold Coast Marathon Balancing high-performance training with a full-time career in Singapore requires a unique level of psychological armour. Between the suffocating tropical humidity and packed work schedules, Raymond’s lifestyle leaves zero room for excuses. Currently deep in his training block for the upcoming Gold Coast Marathon, his weekly volume includes intense mid-week quality sessions stretching past 15km and weekend long runs creeping well over 30km. Raymond poses with his medal at the Gold Coast Half Marathon. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR So how does a day in the life of an A-Racer look like? 05:30 AM – High-Quality Session (15km+ Tempo or Intervals) 08:30 AM – Daily Commitments 08:00 PM – Recovery Routine / Strength & Conditioning "Because the weather in Singapore is particularly brutal, the majority of training sessions have to fall either in the early morning or the dead of night," he says. "The trick is often to think about why you started. Establish a regime rooted in discipline rather than motivation, because motivation is fleeting." The Workhorse and the Lightning Bolt: Raymond’s Shoe Rotation Central to Raymond's evolution into the 2026 season has been his access to the ASICS high-performance program tool kit. For an athlete logging heavy mileage on unforgiving tarmac, shoe rotation is a science. Raymond Sng set a new half-marathon personal best on the Gold Coast in 2025. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR The Daily Workhorse: ASICS SUPERBLAST™ 2 For the long, lonely recovery miles that build a marathon engine, Raymond points to a clear favourite. "I am very much in love with the ASICS SUPERBLAST™ 2 when it comes to logging big volume sessions that stretch into the 20 to 30km territory," Raymond shares. "I’ve always preferred firmer, more responsive shoes, and the SUPERBLAST™ 2 delivers on all fronts. It’s a workhorse that responds to varying needs, whether it's a tuned-up tempo session on the road or a long Zone 2 recovery run through the city." The Race-Day Psychology: METASPEED™ Series While many runners train continuously in carbon-plated footwear, Raymond keeps his use of super shoes to a minimum, preserving them for true racing efforts to maximise their physiological and mental impact. When it is time to compete, he steps into the striking Cobalt Blue ASICS METASPEED™ collection. "The flashiness of the outfit makes you feel fast, but the richness of the deep blue gives you a refined composure—reminiscent of a lightning bolt as you breeze past the field," Raymond says smiling. "Donning any pair from the METASPEED™ TOKYO or PARIS series makes you feel dangerously responsive, giving you that ultimate psychological boost straight from the starting line." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM Looking Ahead: The Anticipated AW26 NOVABLAST™ 6 As part of ASICS Global Running Month, anticipation is building around the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2026 launch calendar. While Raymond hasn't slipped on the highly classified ASICS NOVABLAST™ 6 just yet, he already knows exactly what he wants from the next iteration of the fan-favourite daily trainer. "I heard the NOVABLAST™ 6 is slated to be significantly more responsive, which gets me incredibly excited," notes Raymond. "The NOVABLAST™ 5 felt a fair bit softer, making it a highly cushioned trainer. But I have always been big on strong push-offs and sustained bounciness over long distances to keep the run fun. I think the new NOVABLAST™ 6 could definitely fill that gap perfectly." From an "average joe" fighting his own expectations to an elite A-Racer inspiring the next generation of Singapore distance running, Raymond Sng’s journey is a blueprint for the modern community athlete. He proves that with the right village, the right footwear rotation, and an uncompromising work ethic, those elite backs in front of you eventually become the runners chasing your stride.
