- SEA Games 2025 Athletics Day 3 Round‑Up: Shanti Pereira Completes Historic Sprint Double as Marc Brian Louis Clinches 200m Silver for Singapore
Singapore Athletics Shine at SEA Games 2025 as Shanti Pereira Completes Historic 200m Sprint Double Shanti Pereira poses for the cameras on the podium after her 200m win. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG 13 December 2025, Bangkok - Singapore athletics enjoyed another landmark day at the SEA Games 2025 in Bangkok, with Veronica Shanti Pereira storming to gold in the women’s 200m to complete a historic sprint double, while Marc Brian Louis delivered a national‑record performance to win silver in the men’s 200m on Day 3 of track and field action. Competing at the Suphachalasai National Stadium, Singapore’s athletes showcased resilience, depth and progress across sprint, middle‑distance and distance events, underlining the nation’s growing strength on the regional athletics stage. Shanti Pereira Reigns Supreme Again with Fourth SEA Games 200m Gold Shanti celebrates with the traveling supporters after her race. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Veronica Shanti Pereira confirmed her status as Southeast Asia’s premier female sprinter, powering to victory in the women’s 200m final in 23.09 seconds to retain her title and secure her second gold medal in three days. The 29‑year‑old had earlier defended her 100m crown in a season’s best 11.36, making her the first Singaporean athlete to win the women’s 100m and 200m titles at back‑to‑back SEA Games. This achievement completes a remarkable double‑double, following her sprint sweep at the 2023 Games in Cambodia. Shanti’s latest triumph also marked her fourth SEA Games gold medal in the 200m, having previously won the event in 2015, 2021, 2023 and now 2025, a testament to her longevity and consistency at the highest regional level. Women’s 200m Final Results 🥇 Veronica Shanti Pereira (Singapore) – 23.09 🥈 Le Thi Cam Tu (Vietnam) – 23.14 🥉 Zion Nelson (Philippines) – 23.50 “This is my seventh SEA Games and it has been such an incredible journey,” Shanti said after the race. “The goal was to come here and defend my title, and I did.” Marc Brian Louis Shines with Men’s 200m Silver and National Record Marc Brian Louis makes up for his 100m disappointment with a silver medal in the men's 200m finals. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Singapore’s sprint success also extended to the men’s 200m, where Marc Brian Louis claimed a superb silver medal, clocking a new national record of 20.72 seconds in the final. The 23‑year‑old’s performance marks Singapore’s first medal in the men’s 200m since 1993, and comes just days after he finished fourth in the 100m final. Louis had already signalled his form earlier in the day by winning his heat in 20.88, lowering his own national mark before improving again in the final. Thailand’s Puripol Boonson won gold in a meet‑record 20.07, while Malaysia’s Roslee Danish Iftikhar edged bronze in 20.73. Men’s 200m Final Results 🥇 Puripol Boonson (Thailand) – 20.07 🥈 Marc Brian Louis (Singapore) – 20.72 (NR) 🥉 Roslee Danish Iftikhar (Malaysia) – 20.73 “It’s my first ever 200m at the SEA Games, and to get silver and a national record is something I didn’t expect,” said Louis, who also won 100m silver at the 2023 SEA Games. Distance Events: Singapore Women Impress in 5000m Singapore’s endurance runners delivered commendable performances in the women’s 5000m final, with two athletes finishing inside the top five against a strong regional field. In an event dominated by the Vietnamese, Singapore's Vanessa Lee (17:31.85) and Nicole Low (17:45.37) clinched 4th and 5th spots behind Joida Gagnao (17:09.87) of the Philippines - the achievement is all the more remarkable as its Nicole's debut SEA Games. Shaun Goh (far right) led much of the men's 5000m final but eventually finished seventh out of ten finalists in a stacked field. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Men’s 5000m: Valiant Front-Running Effort in Stacked Final Singapore’s Shaun Goh delivered a valiant performance in the men’s 5000m final, finishing seventh out of 10 athletes in a highly stacked field with a time of 15:00.94. In a bold and fearless display, the Singaporean led the pack for much of the race, dictating the tempo through the early and middle stages before being reeled in during the penultimate lap as the pace surged. His front-running effort exemplified tactical bravery and competitive maturity against some of Southeast Asia’s top distance runners. Vanessa Lee and Nicole Low in the women's 5000m finals. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG 800m Heats and Hurdles Action In the men’s 800m heats, Thiruben SO Thana Rajan advanced with a third‑place finish in 1:54.19, while Zubin Muncherji placed 12th in 1:55.08. Singapore also featured in the women’s 100m hurdles, where Kerstin Ong finished seventh in 13.85 seconds. However, the event was later overshadowed by a timing system malfunction, which resulted in the annulment of national records set during the Dec 12 session. While placings remain valid, timings from the affected races cannot be recognised for record or qualification purposes. Asian Athletics has since appointed an inquiry committee, and a new timing system was implemented for Day 3 events. Singapore Athletics Building Momentum at SEA Games 2025 With Shanti Pereira’s golden sprint legacy growing, Marc Brian Louis emerging as a new national sprint star, and depth shown across middle‑ and long‑distance events, Singapore athletics continues to build momentum at the SEA Games 2025. As competition intensifies in the coming days, Singapore’s athletes have already delivered moments of history, resilience and promise — reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a rising force in Southeast Asian track and field. #SEAGames2025 #Athletics #TeamSingapore

- Apple Watch Ultra 3 Review (Singapore): One of the Most Versatile Smartwatch Options for Athletes, Marathoners & City Runners
How the Ultra 3 performs in real workouts, Singapore weather, and marathon conditions PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR The Apple Watch Ultra 3 builds on what already made the Ultra line a favourite among many endurance athletes — but this time, it lands with upgrades that feel particularly relevant for Singapore runners, marathoners, and fitness enthusiasts. From pre-dawn Marina Bay loops to long weekend runs on East Coast Park, and even the humidity-soaked challenge of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon , the Ultra 3 proves Apple wasn’t exaggerating: the latest updates of the Ultra really did get better. Summary: Still the Most Integrated Smartwatch for Athletes who are Apple Users The Ultra 3 isn’t a radical redesign, but it is a meaningful evolution. Its brighter display, incredibly accurate GPS and heart rate, and improved battery life make it one of the most complete devices for athletes who want a powerful training tool and a seamless smartwatch in one. Fair enough, competitors like the Garmin Forerunner 970 and 570 or Fenix line and Coros still offer significantly longer battery life and deeper training analysis. However, these lack the Ultra 3’s seamless software experience via its vast app ecosystem , so when it comes to software integration with the iPhone, the Ultra 3 is unrivalled thus far. Simpler training analytics may make the watch more appealing to beginners and runners and athletes who do not require advanced training analytics, and while satellite messaging is still not yet available in Singapore — overall Apple’s updated athlete-focused refinements do shine. Pros Brighter, larger display perfect for Singapore’s blazing daylight Ultra-accurate dual-frequency GPS — excellent for city running among skyscrapers Class-leading heart rate accuracy (especially during SCSM testing) Reliable 2–3 days of battery life, even with daily workouts Satellite SOS adds safety for overseas trail runners (when supported) Cons Not an essential upgrade for Ultra 2 users Training analytics still less detailed than Garmin Satellite messaging not yet supported in Singapore PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Design and Display: Built for Singapore Weather and Brightness The familiar 49mm titanium case remains, but the Ultra 3’s new display changes the experience noticeably: Brighter than ever — and it matters in Singapore especially for pre-dawn or late night workouts but not just in the dark, during mid-day track sessions at Home of Athletics or running loops at Marina Bay Sands, the brighter screen is significantly easier to read under Singapore’s harsh sunlight. Data tiles, heart rate zones, and pace metrics remain crystal clear even through sweat and motion. Comfortable for all-day tropical wear Despite the size, the Ultra 3 remains surprisingly comfortable — even with humidity reaching 90%. The Trail Loop band also handled sweat much better than expected and dried fast after post-run showers or whenever we are caught in rainy spells. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ERIC CHEONG GPS Performance: City Race Test in Singapore's Concrete Jungle Singapore’s skyline is a real test for any GPS watch — especially around: Raffles Place, Marina Bay, Shenton Way, Nicoll Highway and Orchard Road. During my recent Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) test, the Ultra 3 delivered one of the most stable GPS tracks we’ve seen so far from a smartwatch in the CBD. What stood out for me during SCSM: GPS lock was instantaneous at the race start pen at F1 Pit Building The watch hugged curves along Marina Bay flawlessly No wild GPS jumps even when running under bridges and flyovers Only minor distance under-reporting in tunnel sections (expected I supposed, due to Apple’s “no guessing” philosophy) An interesting point to note for those who use smart watches is that Garmin tends to “fill in the gaps” when running underground, while Apple's Ultra 3 logs exact entry/exit points . Singapore’s races usually involve a few underpasses — so expect occasional small discrepancies in total distance. Still, overall GPS fidelity remains among the best you can buy today. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Battery Life: Multi-Day Endurance Even with Daily Training Apple rates the Ultra 3 at 42 hours, which is pretty consistent with real-world Singapore use or even slightly better if you are not using it extensively. Our testing showed: 2.5–3 days of battery life with daily runs Easily handles a full marathon with 60–70% battery left Sweat, heat, and GPS load didn’t cause abnormal drain Sometimes can push to ~60 hours on light days It still can’t match Garmin Enduro or Fenix for week-long endurance or longer — but the Ultra 3’s balance between power and convenience may feel right for many in Singapore daily life. Most runners who don't log long miles will only need to charge it twice a week. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Training Tools & Software: Simple, Clean, Effective watchOS 26 gives the Ultra 3 more polish and performance than ever, but Apple still keeps analysis simple. Great for most athletes: Clear metrics Accurate pacing Reliable HR zones Super smooth app integration (Strava, Runna, TrainingPeaks) Fast syncing, solid reliability Where Garmin still wins: Advanced training load VO2Max estimation Structured race prediction Deep recovery insights Trail navigation & topo maps If you’re a competitive athlete chasing marginal gains and granular data, Garmin remains king. But if you want a high-performance sports device that also functions as the best smartwatch — Apple leads by a mile. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Verdict: The Best Smartwatch for Singapore's Everyday Non-competitive Athletes The Apple Watch Ultra 3 isn’t perfect — athletes who want hyper-deep training analytics may still prefer a high-end Garmin. But for everyone else, especially those who train, race, and recover in Singapore’s demanding conditions, the Ultra 3 is a near-perfect companion. Who should buy it? New generation athletes who do hybrid workouts Great dual use between gym life and casual lifestyle events Fitness enthusiasts using Apple Fitness+ Non elite runners Short Distance Multi-sport athletes Anyone who needs a reliable all-day smartwatch with great GPS & HR accuracy Who should skip it? Ultra 2 owners (unless you race in sun-drenched conditions often) Hardcore data-driven athletes who rely on Garmin training readiness Final Score: 8.5 / 10 The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is a solid option for smart sports wearables in Singapore — and for city running, it has definitely closed the gap to be among the best for GPS performance available today. AirPods Pro 3: The Perfect Companion for Apple Watch Ultra 3 Workouts While the Apple Watch Ultra 3 already excels on its own, pairing it with Apple AirPods Pro 3 elevates the experience for runners and athletes, particularly in Singapore’s city running environments. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Enhanced Audio & Active Noise Cancellation The AirPods Pro 3 deliver phenomenal Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) , allowing you to focus during early-morning runs along Marina Bay or high-intensity interval sessions at East Coast Park, blocking out traffic, crowds, or city distractions. The Transparency mode ensures you stay aware of your surroundings — essential for safety on busy streets. Improved Sound & Music Motivation With bass-forward, clear sound, workouts feel more energising, whether you’re streaming Apple Music playlists, podcasts, or guided runs via Fitness+ . While some listeners note the boosted bass slightly alters a perfectly balanced profile, most find it motivating for runs, sprints, and endurance sessions. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Health & Fitness Features The AirPods Pro 3 now include heart rate monitoring, providing a backup to the Ultra 3’s optical sensor. This pairing can virtually eliminate wrist-based dropouts, giving you near-chest-strap accuracy, even in humid Singapore conditions. Comfort and Fit for Long Runs The new foam tips improve fit and stability, making them more secure during sprints, city runs, or gym sessions. Combined with the Ultra 3’s robust Trail Loop band , this setup ensures both devices stay comfortable for hours — whether you’re running the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon or logging long weekend endurance runs. Battery Life for Extended Workouts AirPods Pro 3 deliver up to 8 hours of playback, enough to cover marathon distances or multi-hour training sessions alongside the Ultra 3. For longer runs, the included charging case ensures you can top up quickly between sessions. #Apple #WatchUltra3

With new course challenges, returning champions, and breakthrough performances, this year’s event solidified Chiang Mai as a world-class trail-running destination. Below are the official race results, key highlights, and the stories that defined each category. CHIANG DAO 160 (100M): The Climb to the Top The debut of the 168km Chiang Dao 160 proved brutal, technical, and unforgettable. A stacked lineup—including trail legends Jiaju Zhao (CHN), Sange Sherpa (NPL), and Gediminas Grinius (LTU)—made this one of the most competitive 100-mile fields in Asia. Men’s Champion: Aleksei Beresnev (AIN) After finishing 11th last year, Aleksei Beresnev delivered a masterclass in race management and endurance. His strategic pacing and late-race surge carried him past former champions to seize the 2025 Chiang Dao 160 title—a career-defining victory and the biggest upset of the weekend. PHOTO: HOKA CHIANG MAI THAILAND BY UTMB Women’s Champion: Antonina Iushina (AIN) Known as the “Queen of Chiang Mai,” Antonina Iushina dominated once again, securing back-to-back titles in the event’s toughest category. Her consistency across the steep, high-altitude terrain reinforces her status as one of the strongest ultrarunners in Asia. ELEPHANT 100 (100K): A Clash of Titans The Elephant 100 delivered the showdown fans were hoping for, featuring elite competition and a dramatic battle for the podium. Men’s Champion: Miguel Arsenio (POR) Portugal’s Miguel Arsenio made history with a rare UTMB-week “Double Victory.” Just days after winning the Inthanon 50, he returned to dominate the 100K Elephant course, fending off fierce challenges from Kao Zhou (CHN) and Dmitry Mityaev (AIN). His performance marks one of the most impressive achievements of both weekends. PHOTO: HOKA CHIANG MAI THAILAND BY UTMB Women’s Champion: Hau Ha Thi (VNM) Vietnam’s Hau Ha Thi reclaimed her crown with a brilliant 10:43:28 finish. Her decisive victory over defending champion Ekaterina Mityaeva showcases her strength on technical, fast-paced courses and reaffirms her place among Asia’s top female ultrarunners. HMONG 50 (50K): A Showdown of Speed The Hmong 50 (Day) brought speed, strategy, and world-class competition to the forefront. Men’s Champion: Guangfu Meng (CHN) After years of battling his longtime rival, Guangfu Meng finally secured a long-awaited victory over Rui Ueda (JPN). Their fierce rivalry pushed the pace from start to finish, with American star Hayden Hawks securing a strong third-place finish. Women’s Champion: Maude Mathys (SUI) Switzerland’s Maude Mathys was unstoppable, completing her own “Double Gold” with wins at both the Inthanon 50 and the Hmong 50. Her dominance across two weekends confirms her reputation as one of the most versatile and powerful trail runners on the global stage. - Beyond Medals: Team adidas Shows Both Heart and Results at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon
Bold Race Strategies, Personal Bests, and the Honesty of Struggle Defined Team adidas at SCSM 2025 Najib Mooiz stands on the podium post race. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) brought together Singapore’s top endurance athletes, and Team adidas Singapore delivered both powerful results and deeper stories of competitive spirit. Across the SCSM National Championship and open category races, the team showcased what performance truly means: not just podium placements, but the courage to race with intention, take risks, and fight through adversity. Bold Race Strategy and Breakthrough Podiums Najib Mooiz in his Adizero Adios Pro 4 race day shoes en route to a second placed finish in the National Championship. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM The Half Marathon National Championship produced one of the weekend’s most memorable races, with Najib Mooiz earning second place in an impressive 1:15:14, a lifetime personal best and his first National Championship podium. Despite entering the race unsure about his chances, Najib committed to a fearless strategy—to “race brave” —and trusted his training fully. A strong surge by competitors early on forced him to respond, and he soon found himself leading the race from 10 to 20 km, lifted by support from runners and spectators across the course. “When the participants list came out, I didn’t feel confident at all. Competition margins were too tight… I predicted myself getting 4th.” Najib Mooiz does battle with Keane Ko in the half-marathon. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ERIC CHEONG Still, Najib committed to a fearless mindset and surged to the front mid-race: “I decided to race brave, no matter what happens. After plucking up my courage, unbelievably, I found myself leading the race.” Though overtaken in the final kilometre, Najib’s silver medal represents more than a podium—it reflects the reward of risk, the belief to fight for the front, and the confidence to break new ground as an athlete. A Top-10 Debut for Raymond Sng Also in the half marathon, Raymond Sng completed his first National Championship with a top-10 finish, clocking 1:21:01 to finish ninth overall. His performance wasn’t built on perfect preparation—training was inconsistent, and race execution felt challenging—but Raymond showed that competitive breakthroughs often come from staying committed when things aren’t ideal. Supported by his training community, he leaves SCSM with valuable experience and a milestone result of achieving a top 10 finish on his debut against a competitive field of runners. Raymond Sng, wearing the Adizero Adios Pro 4 race day shoes, secured a top 10 finish in his debut National Championship. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM “Even though the training block and race execution was far from perfect, it was a pleasant surprise to squeeze into the top 10.” Supported by his training partners, Raymond embraced the experience with gratitude: “I feel immensely blessed to have gone through this roller coaster ride with my constant pillars of support.” Young Talent Rising: Nicholas Rachmadi Multi-sport athlete Nicholas Rachmadi added another highlight for Team adidas, finishing third overall and second-fastest local in his race category with a time of 16:59. His rapid rise signals the depth of talent coming through Singapore’s running scene. He shares post-race: "This is my first time racing the 5km at SCSM and I must say it was a great experience. The race course was definitely challenging with a few up slopes and a long false flat along Nicoll Highway and maybe I was a little too ambitious when I said I wanted to break 16min." "I started out the first 2km right on pace but had to abort the plan knowing that I burnt a couple of matches trying to get a gap from my competitors on the first two up slopes. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the challange and the competition and I'm glad I managed to finish 3rd overall." Nicholas Rachmadi raced the 5km in the Adizero Adios Pro 4 race day shoes, and placed third overall. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Women’s Strength: Bernice Tan Secures Fifth In the women’s event, Bernice Tan produced a strong 1:39:32, placing 5th overall in her category and 13th in her gender. Her consistency throughout the race shows her growth and adds to the wave of female runners pushing competitive standards in Singapore. It was her second local half marathon in less than a month, and the experience offered her meaningful progress: “The entire race experience was super happening — run clubs were out in full force, cheering and hyping up the route. I really soaked up all their energy to keep pressing on.” While still building toward her ideal timing, Bernice reflected on the growth she found in the race: “While my timing still wasn’t quite where I want it to be, I gained a lot more control this round and even got a teeny tiny bit faster. So overall, a really solid and meaningful race day for me.” She also shared the tools that helped her stay confident through 21.1km: “The Adios Pro 4 is honestly my go-to racing shoe… soft yet still so responsive — it gives me that comfortable, confident ride all the way through.” Her performance highlights the strength rising through women’s competitive running in Singapore — backed by preparation, consistency, and support on the course. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM The Honesty of Struggle: Desmond Ang’s Marathon Fight While podiums often headline race recaps, the truest measure of an athlete’s heart can be seen in how they respond to challenges. For Desmond Ang , the Men’s Marathon National Championship became a test of resilience. He made a bold decision to race with the lead pack of sub-3-hour marathoners—knowing it carried risk. A strong opening pace showed his intent to compete, but the effort caught up before halfway. At 28–29 km, he stopped, sitting on the curb, questioning whether to continue. Desmond Ang in the men's Full Marathon National Championship, wearing the pink Adizero Adios Pro 4s. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM What makes his race powerful isn’t his 3:48:08 timing, but his why: “I didn’t do this for social media… I do this because I FREAKIN LOVE this. All of it.” His words reflect the essence of sport—showing up, trying hard, and respecting the journey even when the outcome isn’t ideal: “This means you’ll see me again.” What makes Desmond’s race meaningful isn’t his time of 3:48:08, but the fact that he chose to stand again and finish the race. He refused the safe route. He embraced the pain, the doubt, and the reality of a tough day. His message was simple: he runs for love of the sport, not the applause. His story reminds us that performance isn’t defined by a perfect result, but by the willingness to keep moving when success seems out of reach. It is this kind of honesty that inspires communities, not just podiums. Bernice Tan crosses the Standard Chartered Half Marathon finish line. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA SIM A Culture of Performance and Purpose From breakthrough personal bests to authentic expressions of passion, Team adidas Singapore showed what modern competitive running truly looks like at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon . These athletes support one another, celebrate the wins, and share the tough moments openly—not as setbacks, but as fuel. Their performances demonstrate that running is a journey, not a single race result. And SCSM 2025 will be remembered not only for medals, but for the inspiring choices made in pursuit of personal limits. #adidasRunning #SCSM2025

- Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2025 Sets New Records With Historic Double Champion and over 55,000 Runners from 80 Countries
SCSM 2025 Delivers Unforgettable Race Weekend With Global Participation and Breakthrough Wins PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Singapore, 7 December 2025 - The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2025 (SCSM 2025) concluded an unforgettable race weekend in the heart of Singapore, drawing more than 55,000 runners from 80 countries. As Southeast Asia’s only World Athletics Gold Label race , the event once again reinforced its status as one of Asia’s premier running events — and this year, it delivered several record-breaking moments that will shape the legacy of marathon racing in Singapore. Over two days, runners took on an inspiring challenge guided by this year’s theme: “Make That Finish Line Yours.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / FLAVIA Soh Rui Yong Makes SCSM History Singapore’s celebrated long-distance runner Soh Rui Yong delivered the headline moment of the weekend. After winning the Half Marathon, Soh went on to defend his title in the Marathon category, becoming the first-ever double champion in SCSM history. His victory in the National Championship marks his sixth marathon title, reinforcing Soh’s status as Singapore’s most successful marathoner. “Challenge yourself — even if you fail, at least you tried,” Soh said after the win, describing the difficulty of running two hard races within 24 hours. Rachel See Defends National Championship Title In the women’s race, Rachel See continued her dominance by winning the National Marathon Championship with an impressive sub-3-hour time of 02:58:15. Almost 850 runners embraced the endurance test, underscoring the growing competitive spirit and community appeal of Singapore’s largest running event. Iconic Race Experience Through Singapore Runners experienced a route that showcased Singapore’s most scenic locations — from the National Stadium, Esplanade and Marina Bay, to the waterfront trails of Gardens by the Bay and East Coast Park. The Ekiden race also returned, with teams of four completing a marathon relay through multiple changeover zones at Bayfront Plaza, ECP Carpark E1 and Marina Barrage. - Garmin Forerunner 570 vs. Forerunner 970: The Best Choice for Runners and Triathletes in Singapore & Malaysia?
Which new Forerunner offers the best value and performance in our team's tropical testing across various sports, terrains and environments? Find out our verdict here. PHOTO: @MTYFX Garmin’s new Forerunner generation has landed, and this year’s pair — the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 — represent the biggest leap the lineup has seen since AMOLED screens arrived two years ago. Both watches bring brighter displays, upgraded sensors, new system features, and long-awaited quality-of-life improvements for runners who demand consistency. But the story this year is also about price, features, and value. The gap between the performance-tier 570 and the flagship 970 has widened, and that makes the decision more complex — especially for runners in hot, humid climates who need accuracy under sweat-soaked conditions, long battery life for weekend adventures, and durability to survive daily exposure to tropical downpours. After several months of training and racing with both watches, including road runs around Marina Bay, intervals on KL tracks, and trail loops through MacRitchie and Chiangmai, here’s what our athletes think and our definitive take. Ultramarathoner Sebastian Cheong wears the Forerunner 970. PHOTO: @IMSEBASTIANRUN The Bottom Line Buy the Forerunner 970 if you’re a dedicated runner or triathlete who wants everything — full onboard mapping, a sapphire lens, the new LED flashlight, the longest GPS battery in the line, and the latest advanced metrics (with HRM-600). Buy the Forerunner 570 if you want a high-quality training watch with superb accuracy and a stunning screen, but don’t need mapping or the highest-end analytics — and you’d rather not stretch your budget. Price & Value: A Bigger Gap Than Ever Garmin’s pricing strategy this cycle is bold. The 570 launches at a premium over the previous generation, while the 970 edges even closer to Garmin’s Fēnix/Epix line. Forerunner 570: S$759 Forerunner 970: S$1,029 HRM-600 chest strap (optional for advanced metrics on the 970): S$239 That last accessory matters. If you want Garmin’s new running-economy metrics, you’re realistically investing above S$1,029 for the full 970 experience. For athletes in Singapore and Malaysia — where Coros Pace 3, Polar Vantage M3, and discounted older Forerunner models are common alternatives — price sensitivity is real. This year, value becomes a critical deciding factor. Design & Durability: Tropical-Ready? SEA Games multi-sport athlete Ng Xuan Jie trains and races with the Forerunner 970. PHOTO: RUNNINGSHOTS.SG Forerunner 970: Built Like a Flagship Garmin finally gives its flagship Forerunner the build quality it deserves: Titanium bezel Sapphire crystal lens Improved, ultra-bright AMOLED display Integrated LED flashlight The sapphire lens is a major win in Southeast Asia, where humidity, salt from sweat, and daily rain make scratches almost unavoidable. After testing, the 970’s screen remained pristine despite being tossed around in bags and drenched in storms. The flashlight, borrowed from the Fēnix line, sounds gimmicky until you actually use it — from post-run stretches in dim carparks to early-morning hydration stops on the Park Connector. Ultra-runner Sebastian Cheong , who has been testing the device in peak training conditions, summed it up perfectly: “I've been wearing the Forerunner 970 since August this year, and I took it for my Ultra trail race in Chiang Mai last month — it's a watch that keeps up, even when you push past your limits.” For Sebastian, the difference is in the details. The 970 delivers improved training load insights, better elevation mapping, and robust durability for ultra-distance environments. “970 is definitely an upgrade from the 965, with advanced features that help me keep track of my training as I build towards my marathon in Singapore and an ultra trail marathon in New Zealand next February.” That long-range vision is exactly who the 970 is made for: athletes building toward big goals who need reliable data and coaching prompts, even during fatigue. Cyclist athlete and digital nomad Maxine Tan wears the Forerunner 570. PHOTO : @MTYFX Forerunner 570: Lighter, Sportier, Less Tough Aluminum bezel Gorilla Glass lens New translucent sport straps Two case sizes (42mm & 47mm) The 570 feels youthful and light, and the smaller case is perfect for runners with slimmer wrists — especially women who’ve struggled with the size creep of modern GPS watches. Durability is good, but it’s not scratch-proof like sapphire, and after several sweaty, rainy runs, we noticed smudges and micro-marks that didn’t appear on the 970. For tropical athletes who run daily in hot sun and unpredictable rain, that difference matters. For triathlete Eunice Tan , the jump from her 55 to the 570 made an immediate impact: “Garmin is almost synonymous with sport watch at this point — for very good reasons. As an athlete doing multiple disciplines, the upgrade from my Forerunner 55 was exceptional — boasting better GPS tracking and broader activity support — even when switching between the disciplines within the same activity.” She highlights one of the most underrated quality-of-life features: on-device music. “I am most impressed by the music storage which acts like an MP3 and lets me enjoy music while focusing on my run. (Love this a lot since I don’t like bringing my phone out on a run.)” Triathlete Eunice Tan running the 10km in the Great Eastern Women's Run 2025. She wears the Forerunner 570. PHOTO: RUNNINGSHOTS.SG Where the 570 really shines, however, is the ecosystem integration — turning the watch into a daily training tool rather than just a tracker. Travel and adventure athlete Daniel Fang adds another dimension to the 570’s appeal: real-world everyday utility. “The Garmin Forerunner 570 is smartwatch and serious-runner watch hybrid: it brings much of what a runner or gym fitness-oriented user needs, while being comfortable, lightweight and convenient enough for daily wear.” Daniel Fang is an avid traveller and has visited 190 countries to date. PHOTO: @DANFANTHEMAN For Daniel, local ecosystem compatibility matters as much as training metrics: “Love that it is compatible with many local SG health tracking apps such as AIA+, Healthy 365, etc., which many other brands might fall short of.” Together, these perspectives show the 570 is built not only for structured training, but a lifestyle that blends performance with daily convenience — from coaching integrations to health incentives and travel-friendly features, especially for an avid traveller and adventurer like Daniel who has visited 190 countries to date and is always ready for his next adventure. Athlete and digital-nomad runner Maxine Tan describes it as a wrist-based training partner: “Using the Forerunner has made my training so much more intentional. I love how seamlessly it integrates with Strava and Runna — the FR570 keeps me aligned with my effort, recovery, and even fatigue levels.” More importantly, it gives her clarity across her training week: “Whether I’m running, cycling, or doing Pilates, it helps me understand how each session impacts the next. It’s basically a coach on my wrist, keeping me consistent no matter where I am in the world.” Bernice Tan running in the elite women's 21.1km race at the Great Eastern Women's Run. She wears the Forerunner 570. Display Brightness: A Real Upgrade Both watches now sport the brightest AMOLED screens Garmin has ever produced, roughly twice the brightness of the previous generation. In Singapore’s mid-day sun or Malaysia’s open cycling roads, this is a meaningful upgrade. Both remain readable even with sunglasses on — something older AMOLED Forerunners struggled with. Battery Life: Still Good, But Shorter Garmin’s move toward bright AMOLED displays comes with a trade-off: battery life has dipped slightly compared to non-AMOLED models. FR570 (42mm): 10 days smartwatch FR570 (47mm): 11 days FR970: 15 days PHOTO: @IMSEBASTIANRUN Even with the reduction, all models comfortably last: A full training week Multiple GPS sessions A race day including marathon distance or long triathlon brick In real-world tropical conditions—where heat increases heart rate and sweat affects optical-sensor consistency—they performed reliably without sudden drain. Training Features: Big Step Up for Multisport Athletes Both watches now include: Tri-Coach Multisport workout grouping (bike → run → swim → gym in one file) More accurate race prediction tied to your actual training plan New evening report (tomorrow’s workout + weather) Speakers and microphones for music and voice commands These additions are especially helpful for athletes navigating monsoon season training. The evening report’s weather preview was surprisingly useful for planning morning runs around expected downpours. PHOTO: @XOXOCHERMAINE GPS Accuracy & Heart Rate Tracking: Nearly Identical Both models use: Multi-Band GNSS Garmin Elevate Gen 5 optical HR sensor On road loops, sheltered HDB/condo corridors, and the tree-dense sections of MacRitchie, both produced tracks that were uncannily consistent. Sweat, sunscreen, and humidity — common causes of optical-HR errors in SEA — didn’t noticeably impact accuracy. This is the core reason to buy a Garmin, and both watches deliver the gold standard. Navigation & Mapping: The Big Divide r This is the single greatest functional difference: Forerunner 970: Full Onboard Topographic Maps Turn-by-turn routing City and trail detail Reliable for races, travel, and local trail exploration For runners exploring Bukit Timah trails, desaru long runs, or unfamiliar overseas marathon courses, this feature alone may justify the price. Forerunner 570: Breadcrumb-Only Navigation No touchscreen maps Basic line-following only At S$759, the lack of maps feels like the 570’s only genuine “miss”. If you never run trails and rarely need navigation beyond simple routes, you won’t mind. But if you plan to explore or travel for races, this is a major reason to pick the 970. PHOTO: @THEJOHNYEONG New Race Tools: A Big Win for Competitive Runners Both watches debut: Course-based auto-lap (mile/km markers based on known race maps, not GPS) Post-finish auto-end prompt to avoid logging 400m of wandering around the finisher chute Anyone who's run SCSM, Kuching Marathon, or KL Standard Chartered knows how messy auto-laps can get in dense urban areas. These new features massively improve race-day reliability. Advanced Metrics: 970 + HRM-600 Only With the new HRM-600 chest strap, the 970 unlocks: Step Speed Loss (a measure of braking force and running economy) Running Tolerance (predicts how much training load you can sustainably increase) For advanced users, particularly triathletes or marathoners chasing PRs, these are meaningful, actionable additions. The 570 does not get these metrics. PHOTO: @XOXOCHERMAINE Which One Should You Buy in Singapore/Malaysia? Choose the Forerunner 970 if… You are: a marathoner, trail runner, or long distance triathlete someone who travels for races planning to train long-term with structured plans appreciative of the sapphire lens and extra durability willing to invest in the HRM-600 for the full feature set This is Garmin’s best pure running watch ever — bright, rugged, accurate, and packed with endurance athlete tools. Choose the Forerunner 570 if… You want: a fantastically accurate running watch a bright display and lightweight feel short distance multisport athlete support top-tier performance without hitting S$1000+ a compact watch option (42mm) This is the best mid-range Garmin has ever made — except for the lack of maps. Final Verdict: Both Excellent, but One Stands Out The Forerunner 570 is the sweet spot for most runners in Singapore and Malaysia who want accuracy, comfort, and great training tools without overspending. But the Forerunner 970 is the clear choice for serious athletes — the ones chasing PRs, exploring trails, or needing a truly do-everything training companion. If you rely on navigation or value durability under tropical conditions, the 970 is worth the investment. If not, the 570 delivers 90% of the experience at a far friendlier price. #GarminSG #Forerunner570 #Forerunner970
- Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2025 National Championship Preview: Who Will Claim Singapore’s Marathon Crowns This Weekend?
Your Guide to the Local Elite Fields, Favourites, and Surprise Contenders at This Year’s SCSM National Championship PHOTO: STANDARD CHARTERED SINGAPORE MARATHON As the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2025 National Championship returns this weekend, Singapore’s best distance runners are set to battle for national glory across the Marathon and Half Marathon. Despite a few notable absentees with the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand around the corner - with national records, SEA Games experience, rising stars and colourful personalities on display, this year’s field promises to be one of the most competitive editions in years. Below is your full preview of the favourites to watch—perfect for fans tracking the race, runners heading to the start line, and anyone following Singapore’s fast-growing running scene. Soh Rui Yong crosses the finish line in 2023. PHOTO : STANDARD CHARTERED SINGAPORE MARATHON MEN’S MARATHON: Soh Rui Yong Stands Tall—but the Chase Pack Is Ready The spotlight inevitably falls on Soh Rui Yong , whose dominance over the years has shaped the landscape of Singapore distance running. Holding national records in the 5,000m, 10,000m, half marathon, and marathon, and boasting two SEA Games marathon titles, Soh enters the weekend as the clear favourite. He comes into this race weekend fresh off rewriting the national 10,000m record at the Nittaidai Challenge Games in Tokyo on 29 November with a time of 30:33.29 to slash nearly 30s off the previous mark of 31:02.40 set by Shaun Goh in August. His consistency at SCSM—where he has already won five national marathon titles—reinforces his stature, while his build-up for the 2025 SEA Games 10,000m suggests he is carrying exceptional form - as he intends to complete his first double-up challenge of both the half and full marathons. And yes, he also held the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run in a suit —a testament to both his speed and flair. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Fierce Competition But the race will be far from a solo showcase. While there are notable absentees from this year's men's marathon such as Ben Khoo (2-time SCSM national championship podium finisher in 2023 and 2024), Richard Heng (SCSM National Championships - Men's Marathon 3rd Place in 2024), and Gordon Lim racing in Valencia; other in-form athletes are poised to keep the pressure on Soh. How the full marathon pans out on Sunday will also depend on how much energy is expanded by Soh in his head-to-head challenge with Keane Ko over the half-marathon distance on Saturday, as neither will want to lose in a bitter rivalry and arguably one of the biggest battles to be seen over the weekend. Aaron Tan – The Relentless Climber After finishing 2023 as Singapore’s top-ranked marathoner, Aaron Tan (PB: 2:35:28) has cemented himself as a serious threat. His journey—from TAF Club struggler to national podium contender—gives him both grit and perspective. If Soh falters, Tan’s patience and even pacing could put him in striking range. Melvin Wong racing the Sydney half-marathon in 2023. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN Melvin Wong – Tactical and Experienced 2015 and 2022 SEA Games representative Melvin Wong (PB: 2:34:33) knows how to pace a championship race and has been trending upward throughout the year. His strength lies in his race discipline and ability to pick the right moment to strike. Daniel Leow – A Legitimate Dark Horse Adding intrigue is Daniel Leow , a former SEA Games representative and SCSM podium finisher who is no stranger to the local national championships. The Singapore Shufflers runner will be looking to remind everyone of his running prowess having stayed low profile in the last few years. Rachel See is the person to beat in the Singapore women's marathon. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR WOMEN’S MARATHON: A Tight Three-Woman Contest On the women’s side, the marathon promises a far less predictable storyline. Singapore's SEA Games 2025 representative and Great Eastern Women's Run 2025 winner Goh Shing Ling is an obvious absentee, while Verna Goh is also racing overseas - but even they have not cemented a place as an all-time Singapore marathon great. Rachel See enters as the defending 2024 SCSM National Champion and multi-winner, although the gap between her and the chasers is narrowing enough to make this a compelling three-way battle. Rachel See – Calm, Experienced, and Dangerous With a PB of 2:50:54 and SEA Games appearances in 2015 and 2017, Rachel See brings invaluable championship composure. Her late start in running—beginning only in her mid-twenties—makes her progress all the more remarkable. She has proven she can time her peak perfectly for big races, and is our multi championship winner in Singapore races over the past decade. Sharon Tan is a 2-time SEA Games athlete for Singapore in 2022 and 2023. PHOTO: RUNNINGSHOTS.SG Sharon Tan – Toughness Defined Sharon Tan , a back-to-back SEA Games representative (2022, 2023), finished third in last year’s National Championships and returns looking sharper than ever. Her PB of 2:57:24 puts her in range of a breakthrough performance. Known for her hearty appetite—she once ate an entire loaf of bread in one sitting—she brings both humour and hunger to the start line. Chng Siew Lu – The Wildcard With Momentum Ranked number 2 in Singapore for 2024, Chng Siew Lu (PB: 2:56:31) has been quietly building momentum. More than just a runner, she balances her training with scuba diving and an unabashed love for French fries. If the front pack starts conservatively, Siew Lu has the closing strength to mount a late-race challenge. Shaun Goh will be a notable absentee in this year's National Championship Half-Marathon. PHOTO: STANDARD CHARTERED SINGAPORE MARATHON MEN’S HALF MARATHON: The Most Open Race of the Weekend In contrast to the marathon distances, the men’s half marathon stands out as the most unpredictable matchup of the Championships. Although a smaller field of athletes—each bring along with them compelling credentials that could see them realistically cause a serious upset to the big guns. Here is our take on the likely podium finishers together with Soh Rui Yong: Henry He is defying age and just keeps getting faster. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Henry He – The Athlete to Catch Henry He enters with the strongest credentials, having represented Singapore at both the 2024 and 2025 Asian Marathon Championships. His marathon PB of 2:29:43 makes him Singapore’s fourth fastest marathoner in history, and his half marathon PB of 1:11:00 puts him firmly in pole position. With a 2025 SEA Games marathon berth already secured, Henry is expected to set the standard from the front. Keane Ko – Rapidly Rising Having lost to Shaun Goh in 2024 finishing as 2024 SCSM Half Marathon runner-up, Keane Ko is eyeing to cause an upset on Saturday in his latest efforts to dethrone Singapore's distance king. Keane's vocal nature may have ruffled several feathers in the running scene but he remains a firm favourite to cause a potential upset given his inherent potential. Keane Ko recently set a new half-marathon personal best. PHOTO: @KEANEISHERE INSTAGRAM Missing out on a SEA Games marathon slot, Keane recently set a new half-marathon personal best (1:10) in a mid November race in Italy. Known for wearing mismatched socks—a quirky trademark—Keane is fearless, fast, and getting faster. If he sticks with Soh early on, he could force a tactical showdown. Ahmad Arif Ibrahim is a National Championship podium finisher and Triathlon Singapore's men's team captain. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANIDA HUSSIEN Ahmad Arif Ibrahim – The Experienced Racer Arif , the 2019 SEA Games duathlon mixed relay silver medallist, brings multisport strength and a knack for pacing. With a PB of 1:14:06 and a podium finish at last year’s Nationals, he remains very much in the mix—particularly if the race becomes a strategic chess match. He brings championship experience and the ability to read a race’s shifting dynamics. If the field goes out too hard, his tactical patience could pay off. Najib Mooiz is a dark horse in the National Championship Half-marathon and will be looking to sneak a podium spot. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Najib Mooiz – A Genuine Wildcard Najib Mooiz has been steadily gaining traction in the local racing scene and brings both speed and racing grit. Known for strong mid-race surges, he could cause serious disruption if he latches onto the front pack early. He enters the SCSM race weekend with multiple podium finishes this year, most notably clinching second place on 2 November in Putrajaya's Garmin Run Malaysia with an impressive 1:16 tropical race finish. Evan Tang – Improving With Every Season Another dark horse, Evan Tang , has built a reputation for consistent improvement across road distances. If the favourites underestimate him, he has the closing speed to snatch a late top-five or even podium finish. Podium winners of the 2024 SCSM Women's Half Marathon National Championship - Jasmine Teo (left), Vanessa Lee (centre) and Ng Xuan Jie. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR WOMEN’S HALF MARATHON: Vanessa vs Nicole—Best friends and Rivals The women’s half marathon features a fascinating narrative: two athletes with nearly identical resumes and who are best friends off the track but fiercely competitive on it. The race category's obvious and most notable absentee from this year's half-marathon national championships is Ng Xuan Jie , who finished 3rd in 2024 but is focusing on representing Triathlon Singapore at the 33rd SEA Games in December. Vanessa Lee will be looking to bounce back from her recent half-marathon disappointment. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / JOHN YEONG Vanessa Lee – The Record-Breaking Specialist Holding national records in the 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, 5km road, 10,000m and 10km road, Vanessa Lee has become a defining force in Singapore distance running. Her PB of 1:18:07 and victory in the 2024 SCSM Nationals make her the favourite—but only just. She will be looking to bounce back from her recent loss at GEWR to defend her SCSM national championships half-marathon crown. Nicole Low is looking to challenge for a top spot in the women's half-marathon. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Nicole Low – Matching Fire With Fire Nicole Low interestingly works as Vanessa's coach, and mirrors Vanessa’s achievements almost one-for-one: the same international representation, and almost the exact same half marathon PB. Their rivalry pushes both to new heights, and this weekend could add the next chapter to a growing domestic duel. Rising star Cloey Wong (left) and Jasmine Teo doing battle in what will be the first of many half marathon races. PHOTO: RUNNINGSHOTS.SG Jasmine Teo – Ready to Capitalise Just behind them stands Jasmine Teo , the 2024 SCSM Half Marathon runner-up, who holds a strong PB of 1:20:02. Her no-caffeine lifestyle embodies calm focus—something that could pay off if the leaders lock into an aggressive early pace. If the Vanessa-Nicole duel gets too heated, Jasmine may be the biggest beneficiary. Cloey Wong – Ready for a Breakthrough A rising name in the local running scene, Cloey Wong has been posting breakthrough performances throughout the year. If the pace settles early, she has the strength to stay close and the tenacity to fight for a top 3 finish. Serena Teoh is a dark horse in the women's half marathon. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Serena Teoh – Fearless and Fast Another dark horse, Serena Teoh brings strong training momentum and a racing style that thrives in competitive fields. She may not yet have the accolades of the favourites, but her current trajectory suggests she could surprise many by staying in contention deep into the race much like META : Time : Trials 2023 Malaysia where she surprised everyone to emerge as overall champion in a stacked regional field. Vanessa Chong is set to make a return to the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in the Half-marathon nationals after an injury-ridden few years. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG A Defining Weekend for Singapore Running From Soh Rui Yong’s double-up challenge head-to-head with Keane Ko as Singapore's distance king pursues another marathon crown to the thrilling Vanessa-Nicole showdown in the half marathon, the 2025 SCSM National Championships are set to deliver drama, speed and some of the deepest domestic fields ever assembled. Whether you're racing, spectating, or following from afar, this weekend promises to be a milestone moment in Singapore’s long-distance running journey. Lace up, cheer loud, and get ready—SCSM 2025 is about to make history. Soh Rui Yong and Ben Khoo at the finish line in 2024.
