SINGAPORE, 27 JULY 2026 — The Singapore Lions continued their dominant march in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup on Monday night, securing a controlled 2-0 victory over a resilient Timor-Leste side at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Playing in front of 4,665 passionate home supporters, head coach Gavin Lee’s men successfully navigated a stubborn defensive display to lock down their second consecutive group-stage win. The result pushes the Lions to the summit of Group A with a maximum of six points from two games, building crucial momentum ahead of a high-stakes clash later this week.
Tactical Shifts and a Dominant First Half
Lee rang the changes following last Friday’s dramatic 2-1 opening win over Cambodia—where a late Ilhan Fandi scissors kick secured the points. The tactical shuffle saw Ilhan, Song Ui-young, and Nur Adam Abdullah injected into the starting XI, replacing Shawal Anuar, Ryhan Stewart, and Hami Syahin.
Singapore started brightly and felt hard done by in the 9th minute when Ilhan raced through on goal, only for penalty appeals to be dismissed by the referee after a challenge by Timor-Leste goalkeeper Dylan Niski.
Despite suffering a heavy 7-0 defeat to Vietnam in their tournament opener, Timor-Leste put up a disciplined defensive block that frustrated the hosts for much of the first period. Ilhan thought he had broken the deadlock in the 33rd minute when he nodded home an in-swinging cross from Song, but the effort was chalked off for offside.
The breakthrough finally arrived four minutes before halftime. Nur Adam delivered a precise delivery into the area, allowing Ilhan Fandi to steer a decisive header past the goalkeeper and reward Singapore's persistent attacking pressure.
Second-Half Control Seals Group A Summit
The Lions maintained their offensive intensity after the interval. Shortly after the restart, Irfan Fandi came close to doubling the advantage, heading just wide from a corner kick.
The pressure eventually told in the 56th minute. Kyoga Nakamura orchestrated the move down the flank, curling an inviting cross into the box that was clinically met by Song, who smashed it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
With the victory safely secured, Singapore sits comfortably at the top of Group A. Vietnam currently holds three points in second place with a game in hand, while Indonesia, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste round out the rest of the group.
Looking Ahead to Vietnam Clash
The 16th edition of the ASEAN Championship runs from July 24 to August 26, featuring a home-and-away single round-robin group stage format. Group B comprises Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.
Singapore is seeking to improve on their previous campaign under former coach Tsutomu Ogura, where the Lions reached the semi-finals before bowing out 5-1 on aggregate to eventual champions Vietnam.
