Singapore’s First-Ever PPA 500 Tournament Brings World-Class Action and Local Rising Stars to The Sports Arina @ Expo

Pickleball has officially transitioned from a pandemic pastime to a full-blown sporting phenomenon in Singapore.

This July, Singapore made history by hosting its first-ever Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) 500-tier tournament. Organised by Kin Productions, the PPA Asia 500 Leapmotor Singapore Open has transformed The Sports Arina @ Expo (Hall 10) into the epicenter of racquet sports, bringing together top international professionals and passionate amateurs to compete for up to US$79,000 in prize money.

Amidst the high-stakes rallies and electrifying atmosphere, 100PLUS is right at the heart of the action, fueling athletes and fans as the island catches serious pickleball fever.

Why Pickleball is Exploding in Singapore

The sport's meteoric rise was a major talking point at the tournament. Singapore actress and entrepreneur Jaime Teo, catching the action courtside, shared why pickleball has captured the hearts of so many across the island. According to Teo, the sport’s explosive growth comes down to its unmatched accessibility—it is fiercely fun, highly inclusive, and easy for players of all ages and backgrounds to pick up and enjoy.

What started as casual weekend hits across HDB estate courts has quickly evolved into a thriving competitive community. Local rising star Ryan Ng, who represents 100PLUS, noted that his own journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic. With tennis courts difficult to book, his father and friends discovered pickleball on public neighborhood courts.

"I used to play tennis, but during the pandemic it became difficult to book courts," Ng shared. "My dad and his friends discovered pickleball because it was much more accessible and could be played at public courts around the HDB estates. I immediately fell in love with the sport."

Home-Grown Talent Shines on the Pro Stage

The tournament provided an incredible platform for Singapore’s local athletes to test themselves against elite regional and international competition on home soil.

Ryan Ng’s Thrilling Qualifiers: The 23-year-old 100PLUS athlete gave the home crowd an unforgettable opening day on Championship Court. In a gripping Pro Men’s Singles qualifying match, Ng saved three match points to secure a hard-fought 6-11, 11-2, 12-10 victory over Australia's Daniel Fogl-Kulich. Though he fell short in his next grueling test against Australia's Josh Barber (11-1, 11-3), Ng took immense positives from the experience. "It’s great to have an event of this scale in Singapore, not just for the players but also for the fans," said Ng.

Charles Yong’s Valuable Exposure: Local wildcard Charles Yong—who earned his spot after clinching the PPA Asia 125 PickleSlam Pro Men’s Singles title in April—showed incredible resilience. Despite falling 0-11, 11-8, 2-11 to one of Malaysia's top players, Syed Uzair Sufi, Yong embraced the challenge.

"It has been a very enriching experience so far, especially seeing my fellow Singaporeans coming out here to support me," said the 20-year-old national serviceman.

International Flair and Amateur Triumphs

The historic 500-level event has drawn massive crowds and diverse competitors, featuring 155 pro players and 386 amateurs. Among the standout stories was Hong Kong's Anne Wang, who triumphed in the Women’s Singles skill (3.499 and under, 50+) category after defeating Singapore’s Elaine Ng 15-12.

"It’s really nice to see how many people are picking up pickleball, which is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the world," Wang beamed after claiming her title.
