- Singaporeans more physically active, but mental health issues remain
Singaporeans second most physically active of six Asian countries surveyed, but scored poorer in other areas of wellness Image via Betsy Chen 16 December 2021, Singapore - A survey of over 10,000 respondents from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand done by Evolution Wellness in October this year has revealed that while Singaporeans are now leading healthier lives by exercising more, many continue to experience mental health problems, with financial and work stress cited as the top reasons for mental health issues. According to the Ministry of Health, Singapore’s obesity rate has also risen to its highest level since 2010, with some attributing this to stress, which is found to cause people to overeat, more so during the Covid-19 pandemic. Image via The Row Space There were also recent studies that suggests Singaporeans are consuming more alcohol amid the pandemic, with 7 in 10 Singaporeans finding 2021 to be the most stressful year they've faced to date. Developed to explore five key pillars of what Evolution Wellness Group believe are indicative of a individual's well-being, the Evolution Wellness Index can be classified into Moving Well, Eating Well, Thinking Well, Doing Well, and Thriving Well. Image via SportSG Of the close to 1,000 correspondents from Singapore who took part in the survey, 74% indicated that they were physically active, which comes in second highest in Asia, with Asia's average coming in at 72%. Tellingly however, of these 74% only two out of five say they feel like they get enough sleep each night, while 45% do not have enough energy to get through the day, and 50% experience aches and pains on a normal day. Image via SportSG Singaporeans also have the poorest eating habits across the Asian countries that took part in the survey, with 48% admitting to eating more processed foods rather than whole foods, while 53% do not eat a balanced diet. Where mental resilience and mental health is concerned, Singaporeans were also among the most stressed, with 28% highlighting that they feel stressed, coming in above Asia’s average of 24%, while 35% do not have an optimistic outlook. #Health #WellBeing #ActiveLifestyle

- Mixed Martial Arts: Striking, Grappling and Ground Fighting Moves for Beginners with Radeem Rahman
Learn the basic MMA techniques for striking, double take down and mounting with Singaporean MMA Pro Fighter Radeem Rahman Singapore professional MMA Fighter Radeem Rahman demonstrates a hook. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Not everyone is a fan of martial arts, but mos people can appreciate how useful and important a lifeskill martial arts can be, particularly for women when it comes to self-defence. Today we take a look at Mixed Martial Arts, a full-contact sport that incorporates techniques from various combat sports and martial arts around the world that involves striking, grappling and ground fighting. Sounds too technical or convoluted? Not to worry, as we are here to help you out. We dissect MMA into parts and learn a couple of beginner moves including striking, grappling and ground fighting with professional MMA fighter Radeem Rahman, who is also a trainer at Neue Fit gym. What exactly does Mixed Martial Arts entail and how can you pick up MMA? Striking: Jab, Cross and Hook To begin with, for right handers, place your left leg forward and right leg slightly behind. If you are left handed, just follow with the mirror image. The left hook is the third punch of the sequence and should see your four knuckles facing forwards or downwards at a 45 degree angle. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Raise both hands and cup them loosely, placing them near your brows. When you throw a punch, make sure your four knuckles are facing forward and you are aiming for the chin. Start off with a jab by stabbing your fist forward, leading with your non-dominant hand. This is known as your number one. As you throw your jab, turn your foot on your non-dominant side diagonally inwards as well. Hosts John Yeong and Cheryl Tay executing the jab, cross and hook. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Follow-up on your jab with a cross next using your dominant arm. Be sure to turn your hips to the left as you follow-up with your cross. Finish off with a third punch - the hook, where your knuckles are either facing forwards or downwards, ensuring that your elbow is bent 90 degrees or 45 degrees. For the hook, you are looking to aim for the jaw, not the chin. The double leg take down requires a level change first. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Takedown Technique: Double Leg Takedown A common move used in MMA, the double leg takedown throws the opponent off balance and renders the opponent immobile briefly for you to mount on and follow-up with more punches. To execute a double leg takedown, first there needs to be a level change where you go into a half squat. Next you will lean your forward knee down onto the ground, before circling your other foot forward to propel you a step closer to your opponent. Finish off by bringing your left foot out and driving it forward. Following the level change, sweeping your foot in front and driving forward will make your opponent lose his or her balance. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Mounting To complete the entire move, it will require you to mount your opponent. To do so, start off from the turtle position, which sees you lie on your back. With your supporting arm out on the floor at a 90 degree angle, turn over ensuring your the knee of your dominant foot if facing the ceiling. To execute the final step, or the mount position which usually follows immediately after the double leg takedown (see above), you are going to do a high stepover by bringing your foot across your opponent's body to straddle him or her, with your opponent on the ground facing up at this point. Beginners looking to learn MMA techniques and martial arts fitness can do so at Neue Fit, located on the second floor of Kallang Wave Mall. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG To complete the move, throw left and right hooks at your opponent who is on the ground. To learn more about Mixed Martial Arts or martial arts fitness in general, pay a visit to Neue Fit gym, which is located at Kallang Wave Mall, 1 Stadium Pl, #02-07, Singapore 397628. #SportPlusSG #MartialArts #MMA #Striking #GroundFighting

- Squat and Press, Bicep Curls and Wide Push-up Workout Tips with HAUS Athletics' Sakinah
How to do a proper squat and press, bicep curl and push-up? Find out the secret of these HAUS exercise favourites with fitness trainer Sakinah Fatimus Group fitness instructor Sakinah Fatimus of HAUS Athletics demonstrates a bicep curl. PHOTO: AMAR DONEPUDI, SPORTPLUS.SG How to do a proper squat and press? Have you been doing the bicep curl wrong? Also what are some alternatives to the usual push-up? Getting a good workout done isn't always about completing as many reps as possible, or doing a set as fast as you can. Sakinah Fatimus, a group fitness trainer at Singapore gym HAUS Athletics, talks us through a few of the HAUS favourites when it comes to incorporating them into HIIT workouts. To find out more about HAUS Athletics, you can read our feature article or visit their official website. What is a Squat and Press? Also known as the squat press or squat to overhead press, the squat and press involves gripping a dumbbell on each hand with palms facing inwards and elbows bent close to the body. In this position, push back into your hips into a squat position while keeping your back straight. When your hips are below the knees in your squat, push off on both feet in one explosive movement, while pressing the dumbbells overhead by straightening both arms. Expert Tips from Sakinah 1. Keep your feet nice and wide, shoulder width apart 2. Keep your elbows tucked in 3. Keep Dumbbells close to your Collar 4. Bring your bum down to the knee-line 5. Explode towards the Top, raising the dumbbells overhead Both feet should be firmly on the ground while back is kept straight when going for your squat in the squat and press. PHOTO: AMAR DONEPUDI, SPORTPLUS.SG What's the bicep curl? How to do a bicep curl correctly? Bicep curls are known to produce hypertrophy, or muscle growth of the biceps. While it is one of the simplest and most common of workouts, it is also often done incorrectly. The main intent of the bicep curl is to isolate the bending of the arm at the elbow, which targets the specific muscles at the front of your arms. Expert Tips from Sakinah 1. When done standing, keep feet below your Hips 2. Palms facing away from you as you grip the dumbbell 3. Keep your elbows close to your ribs 4. Relax Your Shoulders 5. Curl your arms, then reset HAUS Athletics Group Fitness Trainer Sakinah demonstrates a wide push-up. PHOTO: AMAR DONEPUDI, SPORTPLUS.SG Arm Workout without Weights: Wide Push-ups Push-ups are a great choice of upper body workout as it helps to develop both upper-body and core strength. While there are as many variations to the push-up as there probably are trainers, the most commonly done push-up at HAUS Athletics is the wide push-up. Beginners are recommended to begin with easier versions, or regressions while more advanced participants can try out push-up variations that are more challenging. Similar to how it's done at HAUS Athletics, you can easily incorporate the push-up into any bodyweight workout, a circuit training, or strength and conditioning exercises. Expert Tips from Sakinah 1. Keep your hands wider than shoulder width 2. Keep Your Feet Together 3. Drop Your Chest To Elbow Height or Lower 4. Squeeze your shoulder muscles 5. - Rock The Naked Truth x Sengkang East CSC Women's Day Workout
Breaking the bias on women's perceived roles in society in the best possible way, working out on International Women's Day at Rivervale Community Club Participants at the Women's Day event giving different workouts such as AcroYoga a try. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH I haven't had any form of event for Rock The Naked Truth since our anniversary event in 2020. There were opportunities to do this sooner but I wanted to wait until I had a meaningful enough reason - and this year's International Women's Day was perfect. As a woman, I've always felt there was a certain way I needed to look so that I could attract the attention of the boys. I thought I needed to be a certain size and dress a certain way. That's why I spent over 10 years of my youth being a slave to the scale, forcing myself to starve, over-exercising, counting calories and trying all kinds of slimming products, just so I could be skinny. Cherisa of WeBarre teaching the fundamentals in this easy workout for beginners. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH I abused fitness as a means to lose weight and I ended up burning out and refusing to work out for a good couple of years. Finally, I re-ignited my passion for fitness and now have a healthy relationship with my body. Fitness and having a healthy life is for everyone, of all ages and from all walks of life. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH Fitness is no longer a chore and I enjoy how it makes me feel, as well as seeing how amazing the body is. I mean, I did finish 12 Ironman 70.3 races and 1 full Ironman race with this body - something I never thought was possible. Therefore, I thought it would be great to do something for International Women's Day for the first Rock The Naked Truth physical event since the pandemic started. Cheryl Tay, founder of Rock The Naked Truth, at the Women's Day event. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH In collaboration with Sengkang East CSC - whom we have been working with over the past few years to create fitness content - we hosted a multi-workout event at the brand new Rivervale Community Club. My aim is to make fitness accessible and affordable, hence charging lower fees for the event at as low as $10 per class. The first step to beginning AcroYoga is to overcome self doubts and the fear in your head. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH Also, the idea of having multiple types of workouts is to allow people the chance to try something new, so they can find something they might like and see what their bodies are capable of. The morning started off with WeBarre Fundamentals by Cherisa, introducing this interesting workout that is inspired by elements of ballet, yoga, and Pilates. Then things got taken up a few notches with Cardio Burn HIIT with myself - I hope no one was aching too badly after! Participants breaking the bias on women's day in a healthy way, and also the perceptions of how women should look like. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH Last, Jia Min and Elyn from Jyan Yoga Studio came to teach Acro Yoga basics. If you have watched our video where John and I tried it, it really is not as scary or difficult as you think. In fact, it was quite fun and makes for good Instagram and TikTok content. The new Rivervale Community Club's multi-purpose hall was huge, airy, well-ventilated and air-conditioned, and we were the first fitness event to take place there! Barre was one of the activities on offer at the Rock The Naked Truth x Sengkang East CSC Women's Day workout event. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH The plan that they have is to create more of such fitness activities, especially for women, in the coming months. I'm also grateful to 100PLUS, Bioderma, WOAH Protein, Our Bralette Club, WeBarre and Jyan Yoga Studio for helping me put together a legit goodie bag. Special thanks to AcroYoga instructors Elyn (centre) and Jiamin of JyanYoga Studios after the Rock The Naked Truth x Sengkang East CSC Women's Day workout event. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH I hope all of you will continue to see how smart and capable our bodies are, so please take care of your body well. You have to live in it for the rest of your life! - LIV3LY announces public launch of 1,000 NFTs, charting a path for Running Events into the Metaverse
Of the 1,000 NFTs minted, around 20 per cent have already been purchased during the early bird sale which ended on 18 April Participants of Ilumi Run 2018, a property of LIV3LY and event organiser Infinitus. PHOTO: LIV3LY Pte Ltd Singapore, 27 April 2022 - Southeast Asia's first social fitness and marketplace platform LIV3LY, a subsidiary of event organiser Infinitus, has flagged off the public launch of its 1,000 NFTs (non-fungible tokens), laying down the marker for sports event companies and a path into the metaverse for the future of running events. Designed as race bibs, the NFTs serve as a common identity-marker for participants at race events, and is set to open new doors into real world privileges and next level possibilities for running event participants that weren't previously available. Each NFT carries a unique bib number, which will be complemented by a physical race bib corresponding to the same number for each NFT holder. These can be worn to any event organised by LIV3LY and also grants free access to events organised by LIV3LY and their partners across the region. Jeffrey Foo, CEO of LIV3LY. PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG LIV3LY chief executive Jeffrey Foo believes this is a distinctive trait of the NFTs, “It’s not just about having privileges and benefits, but at the same time about it being the identity for the runners themselves.” Holders of LIV3LY’s NFTs, available here, will also be privy to varying privileges and benefits depending on the tier of the NFT purchased. Some of the benefits holders of the NFTs can expect include exclusive access to LIV3LY’s product launches and parties, VIP treatment at their live events, and a percentage share of the company’s yearly revenue among other benefits. Participants at the flag off for The Straits Times Run, organised by LIV3LY. PHOTO: LIV3LY Pte Ltd Individuals can also trade the NFTs on secondary market platforms or gift it to other people, as they are transferable. The concept of taking NFTs, which mainly exist in the digital space, and using them to create real-world benefits is relatively new. This is even more so in the fitness industry and running market. A thought leader in this space, Foo believes this is just the beginning of incorporating NFTs and the digital world into an essential part of the industry. The popular Ilumni Run will be making a return this year end after a 3 year hiatus caused by the pandemic. PHOTO: LIV3LY Pte Ltd To him, the future of sports and fitness would involve a mixed reality, in which the digital world complements and enhances the physical world, rather than replaces it. “The bottom-line is we want everyone to live a healthy lifestyle,” said Foo. The NFTs are meant to make it easier for people to participate in physical events, helping them engage in an active lifestyle. But more importantly, he added, it should allow them to be part of a real-world community. Runners of the Great Eastern Women's Run 2021 late last year, the first physical event to return during the Covid era. PHOTO: LIV3LY Pte Ltd Foo envisions more integrated physical and digital events in the future. This could be in the form of using augmented reality to simulate running physically alongside other people who are not in the same physical space in reality. Before this launch of NFTs, LIV3LY had ventured into the digital space during the pandemic, collaborating with and creating new concepts for mass running events which include the Star Wars Virtual Run, Marvel Virtual Run and Jurassic World Run. Runners of The Straits Times Run running along Gardens by the Bay. PHOTO: LIV3LY Pte Ltd They have also garnered significant traction across the region, with experience organising big scale physical events including the Great Eastern Women's Run, The Straits Times Run, ASICS Relay and Ilumi Run, with the latter slated for a return at the end of 2022. In a way, exploring the budding world of NFTs is an extension of LIV3LY’s foray into the digital world, which will provide them with a stepping stone to scale-up their technological development and product offerings. - Uniqlo Teams Up with EXERGAME 4D by Ascend Fitness to Deliver Immersive Workout Experience
Decked out from head to toe in Uniqlo's Sport Utility Wear, participants were treated to a workout that engaged all senses of the body Singapore fitness enthusiasts were decked out in Uniqlo's Sport Utility Wear for the EXERGAME 4D experience. PHOTO: UNIQLO SINGAPORE Is it me or are workouts becoming more creative? 10 years ago, I tried yoga at a boutique studio and went to one of those globo-gyms and had no idea what I was doing. Last week, I found myself in an immersive environment complete with projection mapping and motion sensing, fully engaged in a gamified workout at EXERGAME 4D by Ascend Fitness. Hailing from Korea, this is the first of its kind in Singapore. An immersive guided workout experience for participants of the Uniqlo X EXERGAME 4D event. PHOTO: UNIQLO SINGAPORE This experience was brought to us by Uniqlo Singapore, who decked us out in their latest Sport Utility Wear. I chose the Wireless Bra Active Square Neck, basically a padded crop top and the AIRism UV Protection Soft Leggings. Having used their previous ranges, I like the improved design and also the material of this latest range as it’s more fitting (hence more flattering) and more comfortable. Workouts from the EXERGAME 4D experience are catered to all levels of fitness. PHOTO: UNIQLO SINGAPORE I called the Wireless Bra a crop top because it is of a longer length down to the ribs, which is great as it can double up as a top. It also has a one-piece padding that is removable. The leggings came with the AIRism fast-dry and cool-touch technologies, and also have UV protection! It feels smooth to the touch and it held up around my waist better as I was running around doing shuttle runs. Uniqlo has upgraded the overall design and material for its Sport Utility Wear range, providing more comfort for a wider range of workouts. PHOTO: UNIQLO SINGAPORE Knowing that the outfit would not hinder my workout, I could focus on the experience. For a moment it felt like I was in an arcade – oh, bring back those Dance Dance Revolution memories! Essentially, EXERGAME 4D has different workout programmes but in a game format so you don’t feel the exhaustion as much because it’s so fun! Stretchable shorts means participants are able to make quick changes of directions without worry of restricted movements. PHOTO: UNIQLO SINGAPORE Each person gets a station and depending on what the challenge is, you do it at your station or take turns to do it amongst the group. My workout had shuttle run, a two-minute burpee test, high knees with shuttle run, ankle jumps and a speed touch game. It was a lot of speed and agility work, which is not my best suits, but I had so much fun. But unlike the traditional exercises, these come with graphics on the floor that you have to touch or reach and score points or complete the challenge via motion sensors. The men's range of Uniqlo's Sport Utility Wear. PHOTO: UNIQLO SINGAPORE The whole time I felt like I was in a video game, complete with the sounds, and time passed so quickly. I was busting out a sweat and it was tiring, yet I could keep going because I was enjoying myself. Two things you need to add to your to-do list now – purchase Uniqlo’s latest Sport Utility Wear and round up your friends to go to Exergame 4D! Enjoy improved comfort with Uniqlo's Sport Utility Wear for men. - Basics of AcroYoga, and Throne, Forward Plank Poses for beginners
We walk you through two beginner poses of AcroYoga, and share why you should give this particular yoga discipline a try PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG What is AcroYoga, how is it different from other yoga disciplines, and why should you give it a try? AcroYoga has been defined by AcroYoga International as a movement practice that combines the balance of yoga, the fitness of acrobatics, and the healing potential of human connection. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Basics of AcroYoga The two roles in AcroYoga are base and flyer. While it is more common to have the larger person taking base position, seasoned practitioners are able to base flyers who are significantly larger and heavier than them. Apart from the base and flyer, a third person, commonly known as the spotter, is usually needed to assist and ensure it is done safely. The spotter should take a stable stance, and stand next to the flyer and the base, keeping their eyes on them with their hands near the flyer’s hips, being ready to catch him or her if he or she falls. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG The Base Test The Base The base should start off on his or her back, lifting your feet and stacking them over your hips. This will allow you to keep in steady position when the flyer lifts off. It is not necessary to keep your legs straight at all points, and the base can bend his or her knees if necessary. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG The Flyer The Flyer should cross his or her forearms and stack them onto the base’s feet, leaning forward when you do so. He or she should make eye contact with the base to establish trust. Once the Flyer has pressed his or her folded arms into the base’s feet, he or she can lift both legs off the ground. Jiamin's Tip: The base can straighten both legs into a 90-degree or an L-shape, stacking both feet over the hips for better stability. However, if you have tight hamstrings like John and you can't straighten them, you can try placing a folded blanket or small pillow under your lower back. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Front Plank Pose This is a beginner pose which improves balance and provides the foundation for more advanced poses. Flyer reaches forward to clasp your base’s hands. Keeping the arms straight, creating a straight line from your shoulders to your base’s. Press into the ground with your feet to lift off. Keeping both arms straight as the flyer lifts off, the base should be receiving the flyer with knees bent, gradually straightening both legs, and stacking them over the hips of the flyer. The flyer should keep his or her core engaged throughout, and remember to point their toes and straighten the legs. If the Flyer is confident, he or she can move both hands backward to complete the bird pose. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Throne Pose With the base placing his or her head between the ankles of the Flyer coming from behind, wrap both hands around the Flyer's ankles before opening up your hips and bending backwards to place both feet just under the crease of the bum of the Flyer. The heels of the base should align with the back of the Flyer's bum. Once ready, the flyer should lift both feet up, to allow the base to clasp his or her hands around the underside of the Flyer's feet. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Once ready, the base can straighten his or legs to complete the Seated Throne pose. To come down, follow the above sequence in reverse order. More advanced practitioners sometimes go beyond the basic throne to a straddle throne or seated throne pose. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG To transition into this pose, the Flyers should lean forward to clasp the hands of the base, then twist both ankles inwards to wrap both feet around the inside of the Base's calves. Once stable, sit up into the straddle throne or seated throne. To find out more about AcroYoga or to pick up AcroYoga lessons, visit Jyan Yoga Studio at 64A Prinsep Street, Singapore 188667. - Uplifting Women in Sport and beyond with ASICS on International Women's Day
ASICS' women-only event at SuperFly Studios on International Women's Day proved a real hit in more ways than one Serena Teoh, Cheryl Tay and Natalie Dau share a laugh. PHOTO: LYNN LEE, SPORTPLUS.SG This is the time of year where we celebrate women, and we got to enjoy an intimate workout session with ASICS Singapore on International Women’s Day, where we were clothed in pink - my favourite colour! Amanda Ang working out during the Natalie Dau led HIIT session. PHOTO: LYNN LEE, SPORTPLUS.SG Held at SuperFly Studios at Robertson Quay, the plan was to do a HIIT workout led by ASICS Singapore ambassador Natalie Dau, who’s also an ultramarathoner. Before we got to the studio floor, ASICS made sure all of us were decked out head to toe, inside out (minus our underwear), in their latest Yozakura Collection. Singapore national hockey athlete Gene Leck in action during the ASICS Women's Day HIIT event. PHOTO: LYNN LEE, SPORTPLUS.SG Both Gene and I were in the Accelerate bra and Road Balance tights in fuchsia pink, the Race Crop Top in deep plum and the Novablast 2 Platinum shoes with its shiny silver streaks. This entire outfit can be purchased on ASICS.com and is available in ASICS stores now. Singapore national sprinter Bernice Liew during the ASICS Women's Day HIIT event. PHOTO: LYNN LEE, SPORTPLUS.SG Motivational Songs by Female Artistes Accompanied by a playlist of motivational songs from female artistes, the studio was a pretty sea of pink as we were put through deadlifts, overhead sit-ups, thrusters, inchworms and a whole bunch of other exercises - circuit style. ASICS has launched the Yozakura collection in conjunction with International Women's Day. PHOTO: LYNN LEE, SPORTPLUS.SG We then did some partner work, before finishing off with a game of reflexes where you had to stay in a squat and follow the commands of “head”, “knees”, “toes” and then rush to grab the bottle in the middle upon hearing “bottle”. Held at SuperFly studios at Robertson Quay, the event was a hit with the ladies in more ways than one. PHOTO: LYNN LEE, SPORTPLUS.SG Apologetically, Cheryl and Gene did not progress to the finals because grabbing is just not their forte (need more practice at sales I guess) but we had a lot of fun.
