Try out this Cardio Circuit workout with no equipment brought to you by HAUS instructor, Jo-Yee Tan, that is designed specially for beginners looking for a quick, easy to follow and effective full-body workout. What is circuit training? Circuit training as the name suggests, involves a circuit comprising multiple exercises that target different parts of your body, with short windows of rest allocated between exercises. SportPlus.sg recently paid a visit to HAUS Athletics, a Singapore based high intensity interval training (HIIT) gym studio to try out this carefully curated cardio circuit for beginners. The circuit is made up of four (4) exercises (also known as moves), with each move carried out for 20 seconds of active work, followed by 10 seconds of break. The whole sequence is then repeated three times for each move. Move 1: High Knee Runs Jo-Yee demonstrating the High Knee Runs. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Raise your hands and your knees up at hip height, keep your chest wide open. Keep your footsteps light and drive your legs up from the ground. Move 2: Plank Jacks Jo-Yee getting in position for Plank Jacks. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Get into a plank position with your shoulders positioned above your wrists. Now, squeeze your core and keep your hips low and aligned with your upper body as you hop your feet outwards and then back in consecutively. Move 3: Reverse Lunges Jo-Yee demonstrating Reverse Lunges as part of the cardio circuit. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Position one leg backwards, allowing your knee to sit right below your hip at a 90 degrees angle. Push through your front heel and bring your leg back to its original position. Keep your chest upright and core tight, repeat actions for the opposite side. Move 4: Squat Jacks and Air Jacks Jo-Yee demonstrating the Squat Jacks and Air Jacks. - 6 Spinning Tips for Beginners Before Your First Spin Class
New to Spinning? Here are six must-know tips beyond techniques for your first ride PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Navigating towards your first spin class may be confusing, particularly if you aren't familiar with the sport of cycling. But just what differences do spin classes offer to outdoor cycling? We take you through some important first steps in getting to know the sport of Spinning, which is risen in popularity in recent years in the fitness scene. From what to wear and things to bring along for your first class, SportPlus.SG has got you covered with six essentials you should know about, thanks to Sync Cycle Trainer, Tricia Amanda. 1. Attire Wearing the right attire for a spin class will not only enhance your workout experience but also support the many movements while riding on a spin bike. For a full-body workout that doesn't just use your hands, but your legs as well, it is essential to wear an outfit that is not too restrictive. For the Ladies (Top): Sports Bra / Dri-fit Tee Investing in a good sports bra is absolutely necessary when riding, as you'll be having lots of upper movements and you don't want to get abrasions from a bad sports bra. Sync Cycle Instructor, Tricia Amanda. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG (Bottoms): Cycling shorts / Leggings Ensure that you are able to squat fully when trying on your leggings without any discomfort for a smoother and more comfortable session at Spin Classes. For the Men: Tank Top/ Dri-fit Tee & Tights or Shorts For the Men out there, a tank top or a Dri-fit tee will do, try swinging your arms to see if movements are restricted, if not, you're ready to go! PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG (Bottoms): Tights or Biking Shorts The same goes for the Men, try doing a full squat to ensure that movements are smooth so that your experience at Spin Classes will be a smoother and more comfortable session. *Generally speaking, soft, stretchable, and breathable fabrics that don't restrict your movements while riding will ensure a smoother ride for you or it might get messy and uncomfortable. 2. Hydration is Key Hydration is definitely essential when it comes to doing a workout as it powers up your workout during your Spin Class! Drinking water during your workout also fights the heat and nutrition which comes with a lot of benefits! So don’t miss out on your precious water bottle. *Keeping a water bottle close at hand is advisable and you can easily slot this onto your spin bike for easy access midway through class in between workouts. Sync Cycle Instructor, Tricia Amanda. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 3. Towels Spin classes are guaranteed to be a sweaty and fun workout experience which makes towels essential! Towels are usually provided by the studio, but if you prefer to bring your own towel to Spin Class that is fine as well. Sync Cycle Instructor, Tricia Amanda. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 4. Cycling Shoes Cycling Shoes, otherwise known as cycling cleats, are usually provided by Spin Class Studios, but if you already own a pair of cycling shoes at home, you can bring them down to the studio as well! You may wish to check with your studio if your cycling shoes are compatible with the bikes that are provided at the studio. If you don’t own any cycling shoes at home, all are good, your studio will definitely provide you with cycling shoes for the Spin Class! Learn how to wear spin shoes in our article here. Sync Cycle Instructor, Tricia Amanda presenting several Cycling Shoes. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 5. Eat before your Spin Class Whether it’s a beginner, intermediate or advanced class, spin classes are guaranteed to be intense workouts that will require a lot of energy for you to reach peak performance! A proper pre-workout meal is necessary so make sure that you have eaten 1 - 2 hours before your class and hydrate yourself so that you do not feel tired and lethargic during your class. 6. Listen to your body and pace yourself Sync Cycle Instructor, Jocelyn Tan performing a Spin Class. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Listening to your body and pacing yourself is not emphasized enough, learning to listen to your body is important. Even if there’s an instructor guiding you and motivating you, only you yourself understand how you feel at that point in time, so make sure to pace yourself. The class is planned in such a way that certain points will be more intense, and some points are for recovery, if at any point you feel that a certain point is too much for you, it’s alright to take a seat on the saddle or just roll your legs out. When there’s a workout that is required to stand up to paddle, and you feel you are already exhausted, it’s always alright to just ride seated down, everyone just learns to take it at their own pacing whatever is comfortable for you! But most importantly, just enjoy the Spin Class! Feel empowered through movements and beats at Sync Cycle!
- The Sync Cycle Experience: Building A Close-knit Community Through Spinning
Spin Instructors, Tricia Amanda Lee and Jocelyn Tan share about the joys of teaching at Sync Cycle, the myths of spin cycling, and what makes their humble studio special. (From left to right) Jocelyn Tan and Tricia Amanda Lee in the East Coast outlet. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG With both outlets situated along serene roads in East Coast and Yio Chu Kang, Sync Cycle does not only provide tranquility for its riders but also for its instructors. Established in 2016, Sync Cycle’s studios are known to be smaller as compared to other spin cycle studios in Singapore but according to its instructors, Tricia Amanda Lee and Jocelyn Tan, this is what sets them apart. “I think that’s what makes us unique and special in that sense, we are able to build a closer-knit community. The vibes are very homey,” Tricia said before she reminisced about her days as a rider at Sync Cycle. “That’s the feedback we received from riders as well. Especially if it’s your first time coming, you don’t feel as intimidated. I think that’s one of the reasons why I decided to teach here as well. I started here as a rider and that was the experience I got myself.” Both Tricia and Jocelyn began as riders at Sync Cycle before they became instructors together. While riding and teaching are both ways to distress, there are significant differences between the two, and getting to enjoy both aspects is what both instructors find so enticing. “When I’m a rider, it helps me to chill out after a stressful day at school and everything. As an instructor, it’s about connecting with your riders and building relationships and having fun.” Jocelyn said as she also shared the difficulties of being an instructor who is slightly more reserved in nature. Sync Cycle Instructor, Jocelyn Tan teaching a class. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG “Sometimes before a class, you might not be feeling the best emotionally, physically, or mentally but when you come in for a class, you have to be your 100% and bring that energy up in the room. I think for me that might be the hardest part because I am not naturally the most energetic and hype kind of a person.” She broke into a shy smile as Tricia chimed in on how tuning out while instructing is not possible, compared to when you are riding. “Your mind has to be engaged 100% of the time and you can’t afford to even zone out for a split second because you might miss a cue or a drop in the music or miss being aware of a rider who needs help.” Sync Cycle instructor, Tricia Amanda Lee setting up for class. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG As instructors, the duo hopes to bust some of spin cycling’s myths and bring to light the inclusivity it has to offer. Tricia’s friends often have the misconception that spin is only for women. Since riders are predominantly female, she finds herself understanding why that misbelief exists but believes the sport is becoming more popular amongst men. "We welcome guys here as well! It’s very much a cardio thing so maybe it appeals more to females but it's not an only female exercise or sport.” Another bewildering myth for the pair is that riders will develop chunky and muscular legs if they attend too much spin. The two laughed as Tricia used their own physiques as examples to debunk the myth, “I mean, I don’t think we look bulky and buff! I think because it’s cardio, it makes you look leaner or more toned. You won’t have super bulky or chunky legs!” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG In spite of having busy schedules with university and other full-time job commitments, the joy that comes with being a spin instructor on the side radiates from both Jocelyn and Amanda. It would not take much to see that the comfortable and snug studio has become like a humble abode for the two and the good vibes that come with that transmit easily to anyone who comes for a spin class at Sync Cycle. Feel empowered through movements and beats at Sync Cycle!

- Martial Arts: Self Defence Moves for Beginners with Neue Fit's Grace Huang
Pick up useful self defence techniques such as blocking a straight punch, defending against hooks and overhead punches, and escaping when you are pinned to the ground PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG While Singapore is a relatively safe country, picking up martial arts techniques for the purpose of self-defence can always be a useful endeavour, particularly now that traveling is on the cards again. Taking a step away from using martial arts for the purpose of fitness training, we explore the topic of martial arts for its original intent - self defence. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Self Defence Instructor Grace Huang of Neue Fit SG shares with us 3 useful techniques for the next time you have a crazed attacker charging you down because, one can just never be too sure can we? How To Block a Straight Punch 1. On the same side that the punch is coming, you need to push the punch away from you as you step in. Make sure you are pushing the arm towards your opponent, not away 2. You're going to push the (punching) arm as it comes in, and as you step in use your elbow 3. Make sure that you connect the pointed end of your elbow against your attacker's face Defending Against Hooks and Overhead Punches 1. Step into the punch, this time blocking the punch with your elbow 2. Step in with the same side, blocking the bicep of your opponent with your free hand. This is to prevent him from attacking you from that side 3. Next step, you're going to wrap your arm around the attacker's arm to grap hold of his tricep from behind, bringing his body as close to you as possible 4. Step in with your other foot, straighten your leg and pull your attacker down from behind to trip him with your extended leg Escaping When You are Pinned Down If you find yourself pinned down on the ground with someone sitting on top of you, this is how you get out: 1. Get your attacker squarely on your hips, and keep them there by having your elbows in the middle of their thighs. This prevents them from moving any further 2. Bring your heels close to your bum, before moving up into a bridge position just as they are about to throw a punch PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 3. This pushes them off balance - make sure as they fall forward their hands connect with the ground, before you move into a bear hug 4. Hold them tight to ensure they can't lift their arms anymore to punch you 5. Next, point your hands all the way up and bring them right back around to lock your attacker's arm, trapping it behind their body PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 6. Trapping their foot on the same side with your feet, go into a bridge position before throwing them up and over your shoulder all on the same side To learn more about Mixed Martial Arts or martial arts fitness in general, pay a visit to Neue Fit gym, which is located at Kallang Wave Mall, 1 Stadium Pl, #02-07, Singapore 397628. #SportPlusSG #MartialArts #SelfDefence
