A crowd of 38,720 fans witnessed the Premier League giants deliver a five-goal thriller, punctuated by a decisive late penalty from Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard. The match showcased the future and present of Arsenal’s squad, with 15-year-old Max Dowman delivering a standout performance and new £55 million signing Viktor Gyokeres making his first public appearance in Gunners colours. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Early Goals and Rising Stars The evening got off to a flying start when Anthony Elanga, Newcastle’s own £55 million recruit, struck in the 6th minute. But Arsenal responded swiftly. In the 33rd minute, midfielder Mikel Merino found the net following a clever setup by Kai Havertz, who was involved again just minutes later when his run led to an own goal by Newcastle defender Alex Murphy, making it 2-1 to the Gunners. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Newcastle clawed back in the second half, with Jacob Murphy equalising with a low drive from outside the box. But it was Arsenal’s young substitute Max Dowman who changed the game. Coming on in the 60th minute, Dowman dazzled with his footwork and attacking intent. In the 84th minute, he drew a foul from Joelinton after a mazy run into the box, earning a penalty that Ødegaard coolly converted for the win. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Arteta Praises Dowman, Welcomes Gyokeres Post-match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta heaped praise on Dowman, calling his performance “special.” “To play how he did against this team, in the time he had on the pitch, it’s something certainly not common to witness,” said Arteta. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE He also expressed delight at the arrival of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, who was unveiled to fans before kickoff wearing the iconic No. 14 shirt. “We’re super happy to have Viktor with us… It was a long journey to get him here, but he’s been incredible throughout,” Arteta said. “You can see the boys and the environment are very excited by his arrival.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Newcastle Reflects, Looks Ahead Despite the loss, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised his team’s effort but admitted the conceded goals were “not great.” He reaffirmed the club’s intention to strengthen ahead of a demanding season that includes the Champions League, while battling to keep hold of star striker Alexander Isak, amid reported interest from Liverpool. Newcastle’s presence in Singapore was deeply appreciated by fans across Asia. Supporters from the Toon Army Asia Alliance, representing nations like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan, filled the stands in black-and-white. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Defender Dan Burn said he was overwhelmed by the regional support: “I knew there was decent support here, but I wasn’t expecting it to be anything like what we saw.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE Singapore Festival of Football Draws Regional Crowd The match was the finale of the 2025 Singapore Festival of Football, which began with Arsenal’s 1-0 win over AC Milan on July 23. Though attendance for the first match was modest at 22,813, the finale drew nearly 40,000 fans, a testament to the region’s appetite for elite football. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE The festival marks the first edition of a five-year partnership between TEG Sport and the Singapore Tourism Board, with future editions set for 2027 and 2029. Locals are already hoping for marquee matchups in coming years, including possible appearances by Barcelona and Real Madrid. Arsenal fan Teh Gui Hua, 27, was among the satisfied attendees: “This matchup has always been spicy and I’m glad it lived up to the hype today… It’d be great to witness El Clasico in Singapore someday.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / SHAUN LEE A Night of Entertainment and Promise The Arsenal vs Newcastle clash in Singapore was more than a pre-season friendly—it was a glimpse into the future of football in Asia. With youth talents emerging, marquee signings making debuts, and fans turning out in force, the Singapore Sports Hub once again proved itself a world-class stage. - Singapore Festival of Football 2025: Bukayo Saka Gives Arsenal the Win over AC Milan at the Singapore National Stadium
Bukayo Saka’s 52nd-minute strike sealed a 1-0 victory for Arsenal over AC Milan in their first appearance in Singapore in eight years PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ISIS ANG Louis Dunford’s ‘The Angel’ echoed round the Singapore National Stadium, along with the voices of Arsenal fans who had waited seven years for the club’s return to Singapore. For AC Milan, last night’s clash marked the first time The Rossoneri has ever played in Singapore. It was well worth the wait for Arsenal fans, as Bukayo Saka’s 52nd-minute goal secured victory and clinched the pre-season Tridentity Trophy for the Gunners. “We're all very happy with the performance, especially with the attitude, the quality, the determination that we showed throughout the game,” said Mikel Arteta after the victory. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ISIS ANG The Gunners’ eagerness to get off to a good pre-season start was evident, as they dominated most of the first half. After several failed attempts, it was in the 22nd minute when Ethan Nwaneri gave Arsenal their first proper chance on goal. Off a pass by Christian Norgaard, Nwaneri’s deceiving touch of the ball sent his marker, Christian Pulisic in the wrong direction. Volleying the ball down the bottom corner, Nwaneri forced Pietro Terracciano into a diving save. AC Milan had chances of their own, catching Arsenal on the counter-attack. Fan-favourite, Rafael Leao forced William Saliba into a race down the Arsenal half. Saliba however, expertly made sure Leao did not have the opportunity to pull the trigger, shepherding the ball out of play. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ISIS ANG It was Alexis Saelemaekers who had the best chance on goal for AC Milan. Pulisic’s driven ball across the penalty box found Saelemaekers, but the latter’s shot sailed over the bar. A slew of changes were made on both sides in the second half, including the personnel in between the sticks. Terracciano made way for 20-year-old Lorenzo Torriani, while Arsenal’s new signing, Kepa Arrizabalaga made his debut as he came on for David Raya. Then came the 52nd minute, when substitute Jakub Kiwior’s left-footed cross found Saka lurking in the far post. All it took was a calm finish by the Englishman to finally break the deadlock at the National Stadium. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ISIS ANG The Gunners could have slotted in more, but AC Milan’s young custodian Torriani put on a performance to remember for the 22,813 fans in the stadium, denying countless chances for Arsenal to double the lead. Despite the 1-0 win, a penalty shootout then took place at the end of the game—and it was anything but a smooth-sailing proceeding, making for an entertaining watch for the fans. Martin Odegaard was the first to step up to the penalty spot, but Torriani showcased his shot-stopping skills once again—denying the Arsenal captain a goal. Arrizabalaga then evened the scoring, saving Lorenzo Colombo’s effort. AC Milan eventually triumphed in the shootout 6-5, but only after a dramatic sequence featuring six saves—including four in a row—and one miss, stretching the contest to a tense 18 penalties. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / ISIS ANG Having claimed the Tridentity Cup in the opening match of the 2025 Singapore Festival of Football, Arsenal now shift their focus to Sunday’s clash with Newcastle. Here are more highlights of Arsenal v AC Milan PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / AARON TAN Fan Favourite, Rafael Leao was a constant threat for Arsenal. Here, he expertly twists in between Arsenal youngsters Max Dowman and Josh Nichols, showing off his experience. - The Long and Winding Road Towards Playing at the Singapore National Stadium: Amir Syafiz
With two newly-achieved caps to his name, Amir Syafiz now hopes that all the trials and tribulations he's faced will lead to his ultimate goal of playing at the National Stadium PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / IFFA ADAWIYAH This is a feature article written by SportPlus.sg for Kallang Alive Sports Management. For more sports events, programmes and human stories of Singapore Sports Hub , visit the Singapore Sports Hub's 'Here to Play' website . His journey to the Singapore National Team was not an easy one, and it never is for any footballer. For Amir Syafiz —who’s had to fight tooth and nail through injury—when the good came, it came all at once. Ticking a dream off the bucket list On June 5th of this year, Amir didn’t just receive his first call-up—he earned a spot in the starting eleven, ready to hit the ground running on his debut, and went on to win 3-1 against Maldives that night in front of a home crowd at Jalan Besar Stadium. Next on his bucket list though, is to hear the roar of the crowd at the Singapore National Stadium. “I’m really waiting for that day to come. Even though I’ve made my first appearance for the Singapore National Team, it's on my bucket list to play in front of the home crowd at the National Stadium. It’s a dream for me. It’ll be a really memorable and emotional one for me because I’ll be playing in front of the home crowd with my family in the stands,” shared Amir. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR “It was unbelievable to get the first call-up and to get two caps. It was a big achievement for me. I’ll take it as a gift to improve myself as a footballer, as training with the senior players was a memorable moment for me. I went from watching them as a kid to now training alongside them — same team, same pitch. It has changed me as a player. It’s changed my performances and my discipline. It’s an honour for me.” Back to where it began Now making waves at just 21, Amir’s journey began at the age of six. It was his mother who first recognized his potential and made it her mission to nurture both the footballer and the person within him. It all began at the Fandi Ahmad Academy, where Amir started to believe that he could make a living out of the thing he loved most. Amir then made his professional debut in 2021, turning out for Young Lions against Balestier Khalsa. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic however, like many in the world, Amir had to dig deep to find ways to continue his rise to the top despite restrictions. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR “It was a big challenge for me because we had to train with only five people during the pandemic. After that, I managed to train hard and solidify my place in the Young Lions team. From there, my mind was just on football. There was a lot of motivation from the team and the coaches, but in this football journey, I’ve faced many setbacks, some in the form of injuries,” said Amir. The grand rebuild At 19, Amir suffered an injury to his Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), and that was when it hit him. It was the year of the SEA Games in Cambodia, and he won’t be going. “Not being able to go to the SEA Games was a really sad moment for me because I’d never experienced playing at the SEA Games before. The players, staff and coaches really helped me and motivated me to go further in this footballing journey and to never give up." "As a whole, the Young Lions team and the physios really helped me mentally,” Amir recollected bittersweetly. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / IFFA ADAWIYAH “That was when I realised that it was quite a major setback because I realised I won’t be representing Singapore. From there, I was disciplined and did my rehab well, focused fully on my daily training and told myself to make an impactful comeback.” Taking Singapore football forward, one step at a time A year ago, Amir and the national team began training at the Kallang Football Hub—a place he says has given him a sense of belonging on his journey to the top. Prior to the opening of the brand new facility at Singapore Sports Hub, the atmosphere was abuzz—and the team was excited to see what the fuss was all about. “When I first knew about the Kallang Football Hub being built, I really wanted to come down and see it. I wanted to train here because of the natural grass pitch,” laughed Amir. “When the day came for us to have our first session here, it was amazing to see the facilities and the changing rooms. For me, it’s really a top level facility that will help the younger generation in their football journey. Knowing that there are three fields—including the sheltered pitch—all in one area, it’s really helpful for us. We all know how unpredictable the weather can be. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / IFFA ADAWIYAH “We don’t have a lot of natural grass pitches in Singapore. I have to appreciate this pitch and it’s very well taken care of. We even have the gym prepared for us, which I use before training and don’t take for granted. I prepare myself with some muscle activations before each training.” Every time he steps onto the pitch at the Kallang Football Hub, the forward sets a small personal goal — whether it’s scoring one, two, or even three goals. These self-set targets, combined with feedback from his coaches, are what drive his continuous growth as a player. And with growth comes results—something he hopes will draw the fans into stadiums to support The Lions. “The fans will want to see results. If we show results, the fans will come down and support, and maybe it’ll go back to how it was back in the day when the National Stadium was full. The passion from the players too and commitment on the pitch is important. I think we’re working towards the goal of being up there again,” shared Amir. And to those who will come after him to carry Singapore football forward, Amir says to have faith in the journey, no matter how long or winding it may be. “It’s not an easy journey, and will never be one as a footballer. There’ll always be challenges through the years. Never give up and always believe that you’ll get there one day—maybe playing overseas or in the national team. Never give up and always believe in yourself.” #SgFootball #TeamSG #mySgSportsHub

Arsenal legend, Ray Parlour shared with Sportplus.sg his thoughts on the new 25/26 away kit, and the importance of bringing the club closer to its overseas fans PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Singapore, 22 July 2025 - adidas and Arsenal Football Club revealed the new away jersey for the 2025/26 season at adidas Brand Centre Orchard – featuring a fresh take on the iconic lightning bolt design which has become synonymous with Arsenal away kits of the past. Launched on the men’s pre-season tour in Singapore, the jersey draws inspiration from the famous Royal Arsenal Gatehouse lightning bolt, the navy jersey is adorned with metallic detailing and the sleeves feature the iconic adidas Three Stripes in red, adding a pop of colour and vibrancy. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Gracing the launch at the heart of Orchard Road was Arsenal's David Raya , Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhães , all of whom received loud cheers from the media and several lucky Arsenal fans. Also in attendance was Arsenal legend, Ray Parlour , who played for The Gunners from 1992 to 2004. "It's very similar to the kit in my era around 1996. I can see it being a very successful kit and we all know adidas makes very good kits anyways," shared the former Arsenal midfielder with Sportplus.sg . With the club's continuous determination to pay homage to its iconic designs from the 90s, Parlour highlights its importance in keeping the club's culture alive. "It's very important for the history of the club. I made my debut in the Bruised Banana kit which is iconic now. When it'd first come out, everyone went 'oh, not too sure about that one' but now everyone loves it. I've still got quite a lot of kits at home which I played in! I keep the good ones — the FA Cup ones and the ones we won at Old Trafford. They're the important ones because we wore those on nights we were successful," recounted Parlour. "It's great to see so many people outside adidas Brand Centre Orchard in all different sorts of kits from different eras." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Arsenal are set to take on AC Milan in their first of two games here in Singapore on Wednesday (23 July), and the support shown by the fans so far has not been lost on the team. "I heard that there is a very big time difference and fans here have to wake up in the middle of the night to watch us-" shared a smiling Martinelli before he was cut off by a passionate chorus of cheers from the Arsenal fans. "We can't wait to step on the pitch, 100 per cent it's going to be a good game," said Raya. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Parlour, who with his time as both a player and a pundit after retirement, would know all too well the importance of bringing clubs closer to overseas fans. "It's a global game now. Arsenal is a massive club and coming to see fans is what it's all about. Some people can't see them live and are forced to get up at all sorts of times to watch g ames. It 's great to be here, fans can see them in the flesh and blood, running in front of them. "There's big support in Australia, America and obviously in Asia so it's great that they can come here. The players will enjoy and embrace the fans," shared Parlour. The on-field version of the jersey is available to purchase for $189, while the fan version is $115 – both available to purchase from today at selected adidas retail stores and online . #ArsenalFC #COYG #adidasSG #adidasFootball

- Uncovering Kingsley Tay’s Volleyball Journey and the Vision Behind Revolvve Volleyball Academy
Co-founder of Revolvve Volleyball Academy and four-Time SEA Games athlete Kingsley Tay looks to build the next generation of volleyball athletes in Singapore PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR This is a feature article written by SportPlus.sg for Kallang Alive Sports Management. For more sports events, programmes and human stories of Singapore Sports Hub , visit the Singapore Sports Hub's ' Here to Play' website . Four-time SEA Games athlete Kingsley Tay shares his evolution from national volleyball player to co-founder of Revolvve Volleyball Academy — and how he's building the future of Singapore volleyball through youth development, passion, and resilience. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR From National Glory to Grassroots Growth: Kingsley Tay’s Mission to Elevate Singapore Volleyball When it comes to Singapore volleyball, few names carry the same weight as Kingsley Tay . A four-time SEA Games athlete who has represented Singapore in both indoor and beach volleyball, Tay has not only stood on some of the region’s biggest competitive stages, but today, he’s channelling that experience into something even more lasting: developing the next generation of players through Revolvve Volleyball Academy , which he co-founded. In an exclusive interview, Kingsley Tay opens up about his journey — from donning the national jersey to shaping the grassroots scene — and how he’s applying hard-earned lessons to elevate the sport at every level. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR A Decade of SEA Games Experience: Lessons That Transcend the Court Competing in four SEA Games is no small feat. For Kingsley, each edition brought a unique chapter of growth. “At the start, I didn’t know what to expect. But over time, I gained more composure,” he recalls. “In the later editions, my consistency improved, though injuries became more frequent. Still, I enjoyed every moment.” The 2019 SEA Games, where Singapore narrowly missed a podium finish in beach volleyball, stands out for a different reason. “We lost the bronze medal match after my partner cramped up,” Tay explains. “That moment taught me how crucial physical conditioning is — especially in beach volleyball. It really drove home the need for consistent training and preparation.” PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Transitioning From Athlete to Coach: A Natural Evolution While many athletes struggle with life after competition, Kingsley’s transition felt almost inevitable. “In university, I was more of a full-time athlete than a student,” he jokes. “I was already coaching on the side, and when I graduated, it was clear that coaching was what I loved.” That passion evolved into Revolvve Volleyball Academy, a space where Tay and his team nurture athletes across all levels — from those playing for fitness and fun, to others eyeing high-performance competition. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR The Philosophy Behind Revolvve: Resilience, Teamwork, and Growth At the core of Revolvve’s coaching philosophy are three key values: resilience, teamwork, and a growth mindset. For Kingsley, these aren’t just buzzwords — they’re principles rooted in his own career. “We start by making sure kids enjoy the sport,” he says. “Only when they love it can we guide them towards performance.” Understanding that every athlete has different goals, the academy tailors its programs accordingly — a crucial element in keeping youth athletes engaged and motivated. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Partnering for the Future: Grassroots Meets High Performance As partners of both the Volleyball Association of Singapore and Singapore Sports Hub, Revolvve is actively working to bridge the gap between grassroots participation and elite-level competition. “We don’t just run clinics,” Kingsley explains. “We also organise tournaments and workshops to give kids a taste of high-performance environments. Some might fall in love with the process and want to represent Singapore one day.” This long-term athlete development model stands in contrast to more traditional, rigid structures — emphasising fun, inclusion, and scalability. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR On the State of Volleyball in Singapore: Opportunities and Challenges While volleyball is growing in popularity, challenges remain — especially when it comes to infrastructure. “Beach courts at the Sports Hub are well-used, but indoor court availability doesn’t meet demand,” Tay notes. “Because of that, many groups switch to beach volleyball instead.” This increasing demand, while a logistical challenge, is also a clear signal: volleyball’s popularity in Singapore is rising — and there’s room for more investment and support. What’s Next for Kingsley Tay? Still in the early years of his coaching career, Kingsley is focusing on building a strong foundation for the future. “This is my third year coaching. I’m not thinking too far ahead,” he says humbly. “But I hope the players I work with feel inspired, and that they enjoy the sport as much as I do.” Whether it's through his daily sessions at schools or weekend clinics at Revolvve, Kingsley Tay is doing far more than just teaching volleyball — he’s building a culture that blends passion with purpose. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR A Legacy Beyond Medals Kingsley Tay may have already made his mark on the court, but his greatest impact could be yet to come. Through Revolvve Volleyball Academy, he’s fostering a new wave of Singaporean athletes — equipped not just with skills, but with the mindset and love for the game that sustained his own career. For aspiring players and volleyball fans alike, Tay’s story is a reminder that the path to greatness isn’t just about medals — it’s about resilience, community, and creating space for others to thrive.
