From Schoolboy Trials to Elite Racer: Exploring the Mindset of Singapore’s Rising Distance Star

In the high-stakes world of competitive running, it’s easy to define an athlete solely by their podium finishes. But for Jon Lim, an ASICS athlete who also represents NUS, the true measure of a runner is found in the quiet, unheralded moments—the ones where you choose to keep going when the results aren't immediately there.
As we celebrate Global Running Month, we spoke with Jon to discuss his journey from a schoolboy striving for National School Games (NSG) glory to becoming a seasoned ASICS athlete who has learned to find power in both victory and adversity.
Redefining His "Why"
For Jon, the story of how he started running began with a simple desire to win. However, a series of injuries following his initial breakthrough forced him to confront a difficult question: Why am I still running?
"I think I spent a lot of time running to prove that I was enough," Jon shares. "I used to feel that only if I ran fast enough, I could be proud of my hard work. Now, I think running is a way for me to express myself. I run to challenge myself to do hard things. There is a quiet confidence that comes with chasing your goals and not giving up, even when you do not see the results immediately."

The ASICS Partnership: More Than Just Gear
Joining ASICS’ ranks as an athlete is a milestone for any aspiring athlete, but for Jon, the partnership represents something deeper than just race-day footwear. Having navigated significant periods of injury, he views ASICS not just as a sponsor, but as a pillar of support.
"Being an ASICS athlete means a lot to me because I have seen both sides of the sport," he explains. "When you are injured, you start to understand what it really means to stay in the sport even when things are not glamorous. Being part of ASICS has given me a sense of continuity through that process.
I have always liked what ASICS stands for—‘a sound mind in a sound body.’ That message means more to me now than it did when I first started."
Mastering the Art of Recovery
When asked how he balances the relentless drive to push limits with the wisdom to rest, Jon offers a philosophy centered on discipline: "If you don’t know which is the better option, always pick the path of least resistance. It is always a struggle to balance the drive to push more with the discipline to rest. I don’t think it is an art that can ever be perfected, but the important thing is to learn from those mistakes, be honest with yourself, and keep going."

His Daily Rotation: What Keeps Jon Moving
When he isn't gunning for a new personal best, Jon relies on the tried-and-true workhorses of the ASICS lineup to clock his recovery miles.
The Daily Staple: "I love the GEL-NIMBUS™ 28," says Jon. "It has just the right amount of cushioning and is really durable. A good daily trainer is something I do not have to think too much about—it should feel comfortable, reliable, and protective."
Upcoming AW26 Launch: Looking ahead to the NOVABLAST™ 6, Jon is particularly excited about the technical upgrades. "I’m looking forward to the addition of the more responsive FF TURBO™ SQUARED foam, combined with the FF BLAST™ MAX cushioning. It will make the shoe even more versatile for a wider range of training runs."
'Locked-In' Accessory: Sometimes, it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference. For Jon, it’s a simple cap. "When you are already focused on getting through the run, you do not want to be distracted by the sun or rain. It helps me stay cool and keep my focus—it helps me stay locked in."

Legacy in the Making
As Jon continues his journey as an ASICS athlete, his focus remains on growth, both for himself and the local Singapore running scene. He believes in the power of showing up, even when the path forward isn't clearly paved.
"I don’t really know what kind of legacy I want to leave behind," Jon reflects. "But for me, I know that if I give everything I have as a runner, I can one day close this chapter in peace, knowing that I did what I could to contribute back to the sport that has shaped me into who I am today."
