For many in the running community, crossing the finish line is the ultimate goal. But for ASICS Running Club Head Coach and former SEA Games athlete Shah Feroz, the true essence of running lies in what happens between the races—the quiet miles, the setbacks, and the relentless pursuit of self-expression.

As we celebrate Global Running Month and highlight the transformative power of "The A Team," we sat down with Feroz to discuss his evolution from a competitive schoolboy to a mentor guiding the next generation of Singaporean runners.

From Schoolboy Trials to Elite Mentorship

Feroz’s journey began in Secondary 1, driven by a simple desire to win. However, his path was far from linear. After years of chasing podiums and battling the physical toll of elite performance, his "why" shifted.

"I think I spent a long time running to prove that I was enough," Feroz reflects. "Now, I think running is a way for me to express myself. I run to challenge myself to do hard things. There is a quiet confidence that comes with chasing your goals and not giving up."

This mindset shift is exactly what he aims to impart to the athletes in The A Team. For Feroz, being an athlete isn't defined by a gold medal—it’s defined by the character built during the "un-glamorous" phases of training.

The ASICS Philosophy: A Sound Mind in a Sound Body

A long-term partner of the brand, Feroz credits his relationship with ASICS for providing him with a sense of continuity, especially during injury-plagued seasons.

"I have always liked what ASICS stands for—‘a sound mind in a sound body.’ That message means more to me now than it did when I first started," he says. "Being an athlete includes the quieter parts of the journey: rebuilding, being patient, and learning how to keep going when things are not moving quickly."

This philosophy is the cornerstone of his coaching style. He teaches his runners that losing a race doesn't equate to a lack of effort, and winning doesn't make one person inherently "better" than another. It is about the collective pursuit of becoming a better version of oneself.

Mastering the Craft: Wisdom on Recovery and Gear

When it comes to high-level training, Feroz advocates for the "path of least resistance" when managing niggles. He acknowledges that balancing the drive to push limits with the discipline to recover is a constant, evolving struggle.

His commitment to quality gear is equally tactical. When asked about his essentials for the upcoming season, Feroz keeps it practical:

The Daily Workhorse: He swears by the GEL-NIMBUS™ 28. "It has just the right amount of cushioning... it should feel comfortable, reliable, and protective, especially on the days where the goal is simply to get the work done."

The Upcoming Innovation: Feroz is particularly excited about the NOVABLAST™ 6. With the introduction of FF TURBO™ SQUARED foam combined with FF BLAST™ MAX, he expects the shoe to be a game-changer, offering a more responsive ride for a wider variety of training blocks.

The Edge: For Feroz, "locked-in" gear isn't just about footwear. He highlights the importance of simple, functional apparel like his training cap, which protects against the harsh Singapore sun and rain, allowing him to stay focused on the rhythm of his stride.

A Legacy of Resilience

Looking at the Singapore running scene, Feroz is realistic yet optimistic. He knows the gap between local standards and the international stage is significant, but he believes the solution lies in internal belief and consistent contribution.

"I don’t really know what kind of legacy I want to leave behind," he admits. "But for me, I know that if I give everything I have as a runner, I can one day close this chapter in peace, knowing that I did what I could to contribute back to the sport that has shaped me."

As a coach and a leader of The A Team, Shah Feroz isn't just building faster runners—he is building more resilient individuals. Through the lens of his partnership with ASICS, he continues to prove that whether you are an elite athlete or a recreational jogger, the most important race you will ever run is the one against yourself.
