Meet the Newest Member of the ASICS A-Racers Program Changing the Singapore Running Narrative

In the vibrant, ever-evolving landscape of the Singapore running scene, a new wave of talent is rising to the surface. As part of our Global Running Month series, we are spotlighting the athletes who are redefining what it means to be a high-performance runner in the Lion City. Today, we turn the spotlight on Evan Tang, the newest addition to the prestigious ASICS A-Racers program.
Evan is a testament to the idea that professional-level dedication can coexist with the demands of a modern 9-to-5 career. He shares about his transition from a competitive student-athlete to an elite road racer, his training philosophy, and his deep-rooted relationship with ASICS performance footwear.
The Competitive Edge: From School Days to Elite Racing
For Evan, the hunger for competition wasn't a sudden spark; it was a fire stoked during his formative years.
"For me, I have always been running competitively since I started the sport back in secondary school," he shares. "I always found myself trying to keep up with the DSA athletes in my team, and this probably fueled my competitive edge over time."
That relentless pursuit of excellence has carried him through years of training, evolving from chasing school rivals to chasing personal bests on the regional stage.

Joining the ASICS A-Racers: Elevating the Next Generation
As an ASICS A-Racer, Evan is part of a collective effort to elevate the local running community. His mission goes beyond just clocking fast times; he wants to shift the narrative for aspiring runners in Singapore.
"I hope to let every aspiring runner know that running is not all about timings and distance!" Evan emphasises. "It is more important that one enjoys the process, be it alone or with their friends. The results will come once you enjoy doing it."
This philosophy of "joy-first" training is perhaps the most important lesson for any runner, whether they are toeing the start line of a major marathon or just embarking on their first 5K.

Balancing the 9-to-5 with High-Performance Training
One of the most common hurdles for local runners is the "balancing act"—managing a demanding career alongside a rigorous training schedule. For Evan, the secret lies in consistency and community.
"I am really fortunate that I have a solid group of training partners with TREX (Athletics Club), which makes workout days and early morning Saturday long runs way easier and less of a chore after a week at work," he explains.
When he’s not with his training group, he’s making the most of his time: "The other days are for easy running in my office gym! There are many fast people out there in Singapore who are training while working a 9-5, so I know I am not alone in this."
Resilience and the Path to Consistency
Every athlete faces setbacks, and Evan is no stranger to the frustration of physical limitations. Having dealt with bouts of shin splints in recent years, he has learned that longevity requires a shift in mindset.
"My mindset has changed from just 'dogging it out' to being more cautious so that I can be more consistent," Evan admits. With the guidance of his teammates, he has successfully integrated essential cross-training and strength work into his routine, transforming a weakness into a pillar of his training structure.

The Gear Behind the Grit: ASICS Innovation
When it comes to his daily workhorse, Evan keeps his rotation simple and reliable. "Either the NOVABLAST™ or GEL-NIMBUS™! I have only ever used these two for easy days since my university years," he says.
As for his race-day secret weapon, he remains loyal to the technology that gives him a psychological and physical edge. "The METASPEED™ has been my go-to race-day shoe for a long time. I always feel faster and more confident putting them on," he notes.
We also couldn't resist asking for his thoughts on the upcoming NOVABLAST™ 6. While details remain under embargo, Evan is already a fan of the aesthetic direction: "The shape and look is very similar to the Novablast 5, but I love the new pastel colourway."
