Inside the Mind of a Singaporean Elite Endurance Athlete: From Multisport Mastery to Marathon Greatness

For many elite athletes, the transition from one discipline to another is a daunting prospect—but for Ahmad Arif Ibrahim, it was simply the next logical step in his pursuit of human potential.
A seasoned national triathlete and a four-time SEA Games representative, Arif has spent years mastering the delicate balance of swimming, cycling, and running. Yet, in 2025, he turned his focus to the ultimate test of endurance: the full marathon.
Arif made his highly anticipated marathon debut at the 2025 Gold Coast Marathon, where he delivered a sensational performance. Clocking in at an impressive 2:32:05, he finished as the fastest Singaporean male in the field.
While the result was a remarkable opening act, it was also a testament to his relentless drive; he arrived at the finish line just two minutes shy of his ambitious 2:30 target. That performance, however, only solidified his reputation as one of the nation’s most versatile and disciplined endurance athletes.
As part of our Global Running Month feature series with ASICS on The A-Team, we caught up with the SEA Games medallist to discuss his evolution as an athlete, the transition from the multisport arena to the roads, and why he believes the best is yet to come.

The Core "Why": A Continuous Pursuit of Limits
Despite his success across multiple disciplines, Arif notes that his core motivation remains anchored in the same curiosity that fueled his early days in the national setup.
"My 'why' has remained largely the same from the time I first started competing until today. At the heart of it, I run and race because I want to find out how far I can push myself, where my limits truly are, and whether I can go beyond them."
Now, that drive is tempered with a deeper appreciation for the process. "It is no longer just about chasing timings or results, but about the journey of testing myself physically and mentally, learning from every race, and continuing to grow as an athlete and as a person," he shares.
Lessons in Longevity: Progress is Not Linear
With four SEA Games appearances under his belt, Arif is a blueprint for the next generation of Singaporean athletes. When asked what advice he would give to the up-and-coming "A-Racers," his message is one of patience and perspective.
"The biggest lesson I hope the younger A-Racers learn is that progress in sport is not always linear. There will be seasons where everything seems to be improving, but there will also be difficult periods where results do not come as quickly, or where the best thing to do is to take a step back, relax, and enjoy the process."
He emphasises that longevity is built on community and connections. "Competitions are a chance to meet people, network, and build friendships. Some of the best memories in sport come not just from racing, but from the people you meet and the relationships you build along the way."

The "Sound Mind, Sound Body" Philosophy
For Arif, his partnership with ASICS is a natural alignment of values. Balancing life as an elite athlete with his professional role as a PE teacher, he views movement as a lifelong commitment rather than a temporary goal.
"Being an ASICS athlete at this stage of my career means a lot to me because the brand’s philosophy of ‘Sound Mind, Sound Body’ aligns closely with what I believe in... It is not just about racing or chasing personal bests, but about using sport as a way to build a healthier, more balanced life."
He translates this passion into his classroom, aiming to equip his students with the "locomotor skills and confidence in movement" necessary to stay active for years to come.
Mastering the Craft: Balancing Intensity and Recovery
Arif’s ability to remain competitive—whether in the duathlon or on the marathon course—stems from his wisdom in reading his body’s signals. He advocates for a cautious, intelligent approach to training.
"I have learned that it is always better to err on the side of caution... For me, the bigger picture is always more important than forcing one good workout. I would rather make a small adjustment in training than risk an injury that takes me away from the sport."
Gear Psychology: Trust in the Rotation
Arif’s gear strategy is as calculated as his race tactics. Whether logging recovery miles or preparing for race day, he relies on a specific ecosystem of ASICS footwear.
For the Workhorse Miles: "As someone with flat feet, the stability of the ASICS GEL-KAYANO™ gave me the confidence to log my mileage... It has been a reliable shoe for both my training journey and my daily work life."
For the "Boring but Beautiful" Runs: He often pivots to the SUPERBLAST™ series, which he credits for providing a "smooth feeling" during high-volume training blocks.
For Race Day & Speed: When it’s time to move fast, the ASICS METASPEED™ series is his go-to. "The moment I put them on, there is a mental switch. It feels like race mode is activated, and I immediately feel more locked in."
Looking Ahead: Arif is particularly excited about the upcoming NOVABLAST™ 6, praising the series for its unique blend of cushioning and responsiveness that makes training "more enjoyable."

A Lasting Legacy
Looking to the future, Arif’s ultimate goal is simple: to leave Singaporean sports better than he found it.
"The legacy I hope to leave behind for Singapore running is to inspire the younger generation to believe that they can go even further than I did... I hope that by continuing to push my own limits, younger runners can see that it is possible to dream bigger, train with purpose, and compete with confidence."
By training with purpose and competing with confidence, Arif isn't just setting records—he's setting a new standard for the future of endurance sports in Singapore.
