For Singapore’s national triathlete and multi-SEA Games competitor Luke Chua, the path of being a professional athlete is never linear. It is a series of pivots, set backs, and deep-seated commitments that demand a different kind of resilience.

As we celebrate Global Running Month, we sat down with the ASICS athlete to discuss the evolution of his "why," and the reality of elite performance in Singapore, as well as the gear that powers his pursuit of greatness.

From Singapore Schooling to the International Stage

Luke Chua’s journey began at the Singapore Sports School, where he transitioned from competitive swimming to the demanding world of triathlon. His natural aptitude was clear from the start—after clocking a blistering nine-minute 2.4km run during his National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test, he was encouraged to try aquathlon, where he finished second in his very first race.

Since then, Luke has become a force in Southeast Asian sports. He made his international breakthrough by winning a silver medal as part of the Mixed Relay Team at the 2019 SEA Games. His momentum continued through the years, culminating in a successful campaign at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, where he secured another silver medal in the men’s aquathlon team relay alongside teammates Bryce Chong and Tey Yi Jun.

The Evolution of His Athlete’s "Why"

2025 was a year defined by its highs and lows for Luke—a rollercoaster that tested his resolve. Yet, when asked how his core motivation has evolved, he views his sport with the maturity of a long-term relationship.

"My relationship with triathlon is much like how any other relationship works. It takes two hands to clap," Luke reflects. "Sometimes one has got to give and one has got to take. Triathlon took a lot out of me in 2025, and yes it has been rough, but there will come a time where the roles will be reversed and triathlon will give me what I deserve."

This perspective is exactly what makes Luke a cornerstone of the ASICS athlete family. For the younger generation of runners and triathletes—the A-Racers—he offers a blueprint for longevity built on stubborn optimism. "In the battle arena, it’s not the man who is the strongest that should be feared, but the man who keeps getting up," he says. "So when we hit a roadblock, we just need to keep going."

Mastering the Craft: Logic Over Emotion

Training at an elite level requires more than raw talent; it requires the wisdom to listen to one’s body. For Luke, the secret to longevity is removing the ego from the equation.

This focus on logic over emotion is his secret to staying at the top. "It’s easy to make emotional decisions, so sometimes there is a need to take a step back and calm down to think rationally whether to push through or not. Having a coach is also crucial as it helps you see things from an outside perspective."

"Being logical over emotional, and having a coach [is key]," says Luke. "It’s easy to make emotional decisions, so sometimes there is a need to take a step back and calm down to think rationally whether to push through or not. Having a good coach is also crucial as it helps you see things from an outside perspective."

Defining a New Singapore Blueprint

"Along the way, I wanted to prove people wrong in saying that you can’t do sports full-time," Luke explains. "I wanted to try and inspire the younger generation that you don’t have to follow the normal route of studying well and just going out to work—you have options."

Performance Through Partnership

Luke’s career has been supported by his long-standing partnership with ASICS, a brand that provides the technical edge required for multi-sport dominance. To him, being an ASICS athlete is synonymous with the pursuit of excellence.

"It means to be able to be at the top of your game," he explains. "Repping ASICS and wearing the products comforts me in knowing I have got the best of the best equipment out there, so I can just go out there and perform."

When it comes to his daily rotation, Luke leans on reliability. For his "boring, beautiful" recovery miles, he reaches for the ASICS GEL-NIMBUS™ 27 or the NOVABLAST™. As for the highly anticipated Novablast 6 landing in the AW26 collection, Luke is optimistic: "I’m hoping to see if there is any advancement in the foam. The NOVABLAST™ has had good foam in the past which I do a lot of miles on and have had no injury with, which is exactly what I need when training at high mileage."

And when it’s time to race? He keeps it simple. "White," he says with a smile. "White is pro."

Leaving a Legacy for Singapore Sport

As he looks toward his future endeavors, Luke is clear about the legacy he hopes to leave for the next generation of Singaporean athletes. It’s a call to break the mold and define one’s own success.

"You don’t have to follow the Singapore blueprint. If you have a dream, chase it, commit to it," Luke asserts. "Pursuing sport in Singapore might not be the most glamorous thing, but it sure will be fulfilling."

From the track to the transition zone, Luke Chua continues to prove that with the right gear, the right mindset, and the courage to keep getting up, the "Singapore blueprint" is only the beginning of what is possible.
