  • Tampines Rovers back to winning ways, Albirex deny Sailors: SPL 2021 [Week 19]

White Swans remain in drivers seat for 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League Title Race Image via AIA Singapore Premier League LION CITY SAILORS 1-1 ALBIREX NIIGATA: LATE TANIGUCHI GOAL DENIES SAILORS In what was billed as a title decider in this top of the table clash, a late goal by Ryoya Taniguchi denied Lion City Sailors victory at Jalan Besar Stadium and kept Albirex Niigata in the drivers' seat for the 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League title. Trailing the White Swans by 5 points heading into this match with a game in hand, the Sailors needed victory to wrestle control of the title race back into their own hands, and looked set to do so when Haiqal Pashia broke the deadlock on 23 minutes to put the Sailors ahead, running in at the near post to meet Faris Ramli's low cross after the latter had been set free on the right by Gabriel Quak's pass. In a match that provided end to end free flowing football, chances were aplenty at both ends, with Albirex Niigata keeping Hassan Sunny busy in the Lion City Sailors goal with a series of chances, but the Singapore national custodian proved equal to the task denying efforts by Hashioka and Taniguchi. The Sailors should have doubled the lead 5 minutes before the break when Faris Ramli squared the ball across goal again for Haiqal Pashia, but the latter somehow this time managed to drag his shot wide with a gaping goal at his mercy. 3 minutes after the break it would be Gabriel Quak's turn to miss a guilt edged opportunity when good build up play by the Sailors carved open a chance with Faris Ramli brought down in the box by Takahiro Koga, but with the advantage played, Quak's shot struck the underside of the bar before bouncing to safty - much to the relief of Albirex Niigata. Image via AIA Singapore Premier League Both Koga and Sunny were in the thick of the action with chances aplenty at both ends for Hafiz Nor and Taniguchi but the Sailors' earlier misses would prove costly as the White Swans levelled the match in stoppage time when Ryo Taniguchi met Shuya Yamashita's flick on with a header that trickled past a static Sailors defence into goal to rescue a point for Albirex. TAMPINES ROVERS 2-1 YOUNG LIONS: STAGS REVIVAL Image via AIA Singapore Premier League Tampines Rovers are finally back to winning ways after a hard earned 2-1 win over Young Lions at Our Tampines Hub on Saturday. With pressure mounting on Tampines Rovers entering this fixture, Gavin Lee and his charges knew that nothing other than a win against an improved Young Lions side would be enough with the season entering its final three weeks. Leading scorer Boris Kopitovic almost found the opening for the Stags on the quarter of an hour mark, racing half the length of the pitch before getting goalside of Danish Irfan and Jacob Mahler, but squandered the chance by sending his shot straight at Ridhwan Fikri from his weaker left foot. Mehmedovic continued his recent rich scoring vein and made it back to back games with a goal on the half hour with a deflected free kick finding the back of the Young Lions net to put the Stags one up. Tampines Rovers then squandered a series of chances with Kyoga Nakamura and Kopitovic both sending their shots from range wide of the Young Lions goal. Image via AIA Singapore Premier League The Stags profligacy almost proved costly when the Young Lions leveled the match on 71 minutes through Jacob Mahler after Zulqarnaen Suzliman was adjudged to have been felled in the box by Mahdu Mohana, but had Taufiq Suparno to thank when the super sub found the net just a minute later, drilling his shot past Ridhwan Fikri off a creative backheel pass by Mehmedovic to seal all three points for the Stags. TANJONG PAGAR UNITED 1-1 HOUGANG UNITED: JURONG EAST STALEMATE Khairul Amri's second half goal for Tanjong Pagar United rescued a point for the Jaguars and denied third placed Hougang United a victory at Jurong East Stadium. Image via AIA Singapore Premier League Leading fourth placed Tampines Rovers by 9 points, Hougang United have already all but cemented third place for the season, but fifth placed Tanjong Pagar United still has plenty to play for in their efforts to stay ahead of Balestier Khalsa and Geylang International. Things couldn't have started any worse for the Jaguars with Gilberto Fortunato opening the scoring for Hougang United inside 10 minutes with a delightful lob over Zharfan Rohaizad. The Jaguars grew in confidence as the match wore on however, an were finally rewarded 7 minutes into the second half when Reo Nishiguchi's cross to the far post was met by Khairul Amri's volley which left Izwan Mahbud with no chance in the Hougang goal. Looking to bounce back, the Cheetahs piled on the pressure but efforts by Gilberto, Tomoyuki Doi were denied by a resilient Tanjong Pagar rearguard as both teams were forced to take a share of the spoils. New additions to EDIFICE line of high-performance chronographs are based on the brand concept of “Speed and Intelligence”, and are the third set of collaboration models designed with the Formula OneTM team Image via Casio Singapore 15 September 2021, SINGAPORE – Casio EDIFICE announced today the release of new additions to the EDIFICE line of high-performance chronographs based on the brand concept of “Speed and Intelligence.” The EQB-1200AT, EFS-S580AT, and EFR-571AT employ a dial made from 6K carbon* and are the third set of collaboration models designed with the Formula OneTM team Scuderia AlphaTauri. Scuderia AlphaTauri is a racing team with many young, up-and-coming drivers. The team’s cutting-edge technologies and passionate pursuit of speed are a great match for the EDIFICE brand concept, and Casio has been an official partner since 2016, when the team was known as Scuderia Toro Rosso. The new EQB-1200AT, EFS-S580AT, and EFR-571AT watches feature a dial made from 6K carbon fiber, inherited from the second collaboration with Scuderia AlphaTauri, which has been well-received. The watches incorporate Formula OneTM technology with watch designs that use the same kind of high-strength carbon fiber as used in racing car wings and floors. All three models are water-resistant down to 100 meters. Image via JomRun "But, if Garfield can step out of his comfort zone, then so can you! That’s the message we at JomRun want to amplify. Also, this is one of the most effective ways that people can stay safe while keeping their heart rates up." He added: "As the years have passed, my appreciation for the Rail Corridor continued to grow and we are thrilled to support its rewilding by holding a virtual run." His sentiments were echoed by Shawn Lum, President of the Nature Society (Singapore). "By rewilding some stretches of the Rail Corridor and creating a continuous green canopy along it, we aim to enhance the conservation value of the corridor," shared Lum. "The effort will also yield a cooler, greener experience for visitors as well as the rare native wildlife species that will travel along it." Image credit: PUB Green Run Ms Chong Mien Ling, Chief Sustainability Officer, PUB, said: "Partnering Groundswell to organise this eco-friendly virtual run extends from PUB’s commitment towards creating a Sustainable and Green Singapore." • Goalkeeper Hassan Sunny rescues Sailors: SPL 2021 [Round 12]

Hassan Sunny rescues Sailors, Tanjong Pagar Utd thrash Hougang Utd, Amy Recha double seals points for Geylang Image credit: Singapore Premier League ALBIREX NIIGATA 1-1 LION CITY SAILORS: HASSAN SUNNY HEROICS RESCUE SAILORS 24 July 2021, Singapore - Goalkeeper Hassan Sunny delivered a man-of-the-match performance for Lion City Sailors in the top of the table clash with champions Albirex Niigata, with the two title chasing clubs settling for a point at Jurong East Stadium. In a match which saw new Sailors Head Coach Kim Do-hoon make his Singapore Premier League bow, the Sailors were slow out of the blocks and spent much of the first half chasing shadows. Image credit: Lion City Sailors Facebook Albirex Niigata were industrious as always, and created several guilt edge chances but were thwarted each time by the heroics of Singapore national custodian Hassan Sunny in the Lion City Sailors goal, with his finger tip save on 32 minutes to deny Nagasawa's 25-yard effort the pick of the bunch. The White Swans would not be denied however, and duly went ahead through Ryoya Taniguchi who converted from the penalty spot after Yu Tokiwa was felled by Aqhari Abdullah. The Sailors came out a more creative side after the break with the introduction of Brazilian playmaker Diego Lopes, and their pressure told eventually with Lopes releasing Hafiz Nor down the left before the latter's cutback was fired into the roof of the net by hitman Stipe Plazibat. Image credit: Singapore Premier League HOUGANG UNITED 1 - 4 TANJONG PAGAR UNITED: HISTORIC WIN FOR JAGUARS Tanjong Pagar United scored only their second league win of the season, and their first over third placed Hougang United since 2013 when they hammered the Cheetahs 4-1 at home. After a goal-less first half, the floodgates opened in the two minutes into the second period with Tanjong Pagar United drawing first blood through Anaqi Ismit, who got on the end of a teasing cross by Reo Nishiguchi to put the Jaguars in front. Image credit: Singapore Premier League Not looking to be outdone on their home patch, Hougang United duly drew level through Japanese hitman Tomoyuki Doi's 15th goal of the season. The league's top scorer bent his free kick on the edge of the area into the far corner of Zharfan Rohaizad's goal, leaving the custodian rooted to the spot to level the scores. Reo Nishiguchi added a third for Tanjong Pagar United in the 88th minute when he cut aside and let fly a clever left footed finish that went in off Izwan Mahbud's right hand post to put it beyond the Cheetahs, before Khairul Amri fired home from close range after being set up by fellow substitute Suhairi Sabri. GEYLANG INTERNATIONAL 3-1 BALESTIER KHALSA: EAGLES BATTLE BACK Geylang International recovered from going behind to register three goals and seal all 3 points in their first match after the SPL hiatus. A defensive mistake cost Geylang International dear inside the opening 11 minutes and Sime Zuzul made no mistake from the edge of the area, rifling home after outmuscling Eagles skipper Ichikawa. Image credit: Singapore Premier League The goal came much against the run of play as Geylang had dominated the earlier exchanges with high pressing play, forcing the Balestier into rushed clearances. They eventually found their breakthrough on 39 minutes through a swift counterattack that was started by Barry Maguire, who picked out Moresche's clever overlapping run down the left, who in turn set up Amy Recha to finish with aplomb past an onrushing Riki Kumura in the Balestier goal. Image credit: Singapore Premier League The Brazilian provider then turned goalscorer when he scored his 9th goal of the season 8 minutes into the second half, timing his run perfectly to reach Maguire's pass and dink it over Kumura for Geylang's second. The Eagles doubled their lead just 5 minutes later when from a similar position Barry Maguire picked out Amy Recha, who found himself in oceans of space, and duly turned his marker for fire home his second and seal the points for the Eagles. #SportPlusSG #Football #SingaporePremierLeague #SingaporeFootball

  • Golf: Marc Ong wins maiden Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG Title

26 year-old fired a closing two-under-par 70 to finish even for the tournament, but wins on countback based on final round score Image credit: SPORTFIVE Tanah Merah Country Club, 16 July 2021 - Singapore’s Marc Ong won for the first time on the Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG today. The 26 year-old fired a closing two-under-par 70 to finish even for the tournament, and tie compatriot Greg Foo but win on countback based on the final round score. Foo, joint leader at the start of the day with Singapore’s Mitchell Slorach, closed with a 75 on the Tampines Course. Slorach tied for third, two shots back, with fellow countryman Mardan Mamat and Myanmar’s Zaw Moe. “This is my first win as a pro, so it means so much,” said Ong, who took home the tournament prize money of S$3,850. “It was close all the way and to come out on top against Greg [Foo] and Mardan [Mamat] is really great. I didn’t check the scores for most of the round but when I checked the app I saw we were tied so that put the pressure on.” Image credit: SPORTFIVE Ong, a professional for three years who is based at Tanah Merah, toured the front nine in two under and came home in even par making a crucial birdie on the par-three 16th. Foo had claimed the second leg of the Pro Series here on the Tampines Course – helped by a final round 64 – and was looking to continue that winning streak this week. However, the two-time Singapore Open Amateur champion double bogeyed the 10th and dropped shots on 14, 15 and 18 for a back nine of 42. Despite that, he was still able to move to the top of the Order of Merit with total earnings of S$7,050, while Slorach is in second place and Ong third. Mamat, a five-time winner on the Asian Tour, also struggled home in two over – he made double on the par five 15th - to help hand victory to Ong. “It wasn’t meant to be today, best to let the young ones win,” joked 53-year-old Mamat. In the 73rd Singapore Open Amateur Championship – which was run in parallel with the Pro Series event, on the same course ‒ Singapore’s Ryan Ang emerged victorious. He closed with a 74 to finish four over for the event and beat countryman Justin Kuk by two shots. #SportPlusSG #Golf #TeamSingapore
