  • Singapore 2-2 Timor Leste: Late Emaviwe strike saves Lions' blushes

All square at Jalan Besar Stadium in AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers Group H Opener Image via Junpiter Futbol, Siaw Woon Chong 26 October 2021, Singapore - A late Jordan Emaviwe strike at Jalan Besar Stadium saved the Singapore U22s from an embarassing defeat to minows Timor Leste last night. The Lions kicked off their opening Group H game of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022™ Qualifiers in front of a 1,000 home fans, and buoyed by the home support, got off a great start when Glenn Kweh put the home side in front. Match Highlights via Football Association of Singapore Kweh was quickest to react after goalkeeper Junilo Manuel Pereira spilled the ball, and in truth, it was a well deserved lead at that point. The Lions' joy was short lived however, as they were pegged back with two Timor Leste goals in quick succession towards the end of the first period. Match Turned on its Head Elias Joao Mesquita, got the final touch off a flick-on from a corner at point blank range, before he turned creator to set up Gali by putting him through on goal in a Timor Leste counter attack. Gali however, was shown a straight red card for using offensive language in his celebrations in front of the home fans, but even then, the Lions found themselves with much to do trailing 1-2 at the break. Image via Football Association of Singapore Profligate finishing in the second period saw the Lions failing to capitalise on the hatful of chances that were created however, and it was only till the dying embers of the match when Jordan Emaviwe volleyed home the equaliser that the Lions could heave a huge sigh of relief. Singapore will next face the Philippines, who currently sit bottom of Group H following a 0-3 reverse against favourites South Korea, but will fancy their chances against a Singapore side having gotten their toughest fixture out of the way. Held in Doha, Qatar this year, the Asian Table Tennis Championships was a much needed competitive platform for many of Singapore's budding paddlers given the lack of competition owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Singapore Table Tennis Association made the decision to field younger players all aged under 25, allowing them to gain the experience and exposure that will come to good use in years to come. • Singapore Netballers focus on returning to basics as competitions remain suspended

Team Singapore netballers Miki Ng and Sindhu Nair share their experiences training through the Coronavirus Pandemic File Photo: SportPlus.SG Over the past year, the Coronavirus Pandemic has almost put a total stop to all team sports activities, from elite level through to social warriors. Just how are Team Singapore's netballers coping with training through this period, not knowing when their next competition is going to resume? We ask Sindhu Nair and Miki Ng. Sindhu Nair and Miki Ng recall their favourite moments representing Singapore before Covid-19 hit. Full feature is available on Singtel TV mio Sports channel and 1 Play Sports. What has been your favourite moment in representing singapore so far? Miki: I think that would have to be the Asian Youth Championships in 2019, there was this one game where we came up against a very strong opponent that was a do or die match. That was the game I saw the team come together and play as one, and it showed me how a team can come together and achieve so much together. File Photo: SportPlus.SG Sindhu: My most memorable Netball experience would be Nations Cup 2019. It that competition we played against a lot of difficult opponents but we managed to clinch second place. Covid-19 has had a significant impact on team sports - how has that impacted you as a Netball athlete over the past year? Miki: Netball was in the middle of a competition, and it had to be cancelled. International players had to be flown back because we weren't sure when airlines would be closed. After that there was a lot of uncertainty, and we had to adapt. We were allowed to come back for trainings after circuit breaker, but we had restrictions on number of players - so we had to focus a lot more on fundamentals and basics. But I guess it also helped a lot of us see Netball in a different light. File Photo: SportPlus.SG Sindhu: It has been very difficult for us, the last international competition we had was in 2019. During competition you are focusing a lot more on game play, so at this juncture, I am focusing more on improving my fitness, improving my strength so that I can be a better athlete for when competitions resume. #SportPlusSG #Netball

  • Golf: Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG to resume on 30 June

Gregory Foo leads a field of 16 men and two women professionals who will compete for the total prize money of S$10,600 Image credit: SPORTFIVE The new Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG will resume at the Sentosa Golf Club (SGC) from 30 June to 1 July, after being put on hold for over a month as Singapore re-entered Phase 2 Heightened Alert between 16 May and 20 June 2021 to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus following a spike in community cases. Singapore Golf Association (SGA) launched the series with the first of eight legs in March, before the suspension of the competition was suspended after completing two instalments. The third leg will now take place at Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course next week, with the event previously scheduled for end of May. Team Singapore's Gregory Foo, winner of the second leg in April, currently leads a field of 16 men and two women professionals who will compete for a total prize money of S$10,600. Six leading amateurs, including another two women, have also been invited to tee up alongside the professionals. Speaking ahead of his return to competition, Foo, who currently heads the Series’ professional leaderboard ahead of Choo Tze Huang, said: “Being able to play competitive golf again means a lot to me as it’s going to benefit my game and help me stay sharp." The 27 year-old added: "It will certainly serve as good preparation for any opportunities that may come my way later in the year to compete overseas." Image credit: SPORTFIVE The tournament has been a boon for local golfers, as many have had to put off plans to compete overseas this year, particularly to the United States and Japan, and will be relying on the tournament to keep them competition-ready once travel restrictions are eased. His sentiments were shared by Koh Dengshan, who sits seventh in the leaderboard: “Playing in the Series has kept me in a competitive environment. This will definitely help prepare my game and mental fitness for qualifying school for overseas tournaments when slots open up, hopefully in the coming months.” Singapore Golf coach Matt Ballard believes tournaments like this will provide valuable lessons for his national squad, and help motivate them to raise their game to new heights. With there being very few high-level tournaments over the Covid period, it is an invaluable opportunity for the athletes. Said Ballard: “For an elite amateur golfer, the best way to improve is to learn and compare your game to the professionals. The Series will expose our national players to the traits, demeanour, skills and approach of the professionals. Ultimately, it is about how they execute their golf under pressure.” Among the professionals to look out for in the third leg at Serapong are Abdul Hadi and Mitchell Slorach, winners of the Peacock Cup (a new monthly competition held on 11 March for SGC professionals), Amanda Tan, Jesse Yap, Koh Dengshan, and Koh Sock Hwee as Sentosa Golf Club is their home turf. Leg 4, a four-day tournament from 13 to 16 July, will be held at Tanah Merah Country Club in conjunction with the Singapore Open Amateur Championship. #SportPlusSG #Golf #TeamSingapore
