18 AUGUST 2026, BANGKOK - The Singapore national football team bowed out of the ASEAN football championship with their heads held high, securing a valiant 2-1 victory against Thailand away at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium on Tuesday, August 18.

Despite the heroic win on the night, Gavin Lee’s men fell 4-3 on aggregate, unable to fully overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg at Jalan Besar Stadium.

A Mountain to Climb on Waterlogged Turf

Playing on a heavy, waterlogged pitch following a fierce afternoon downpour, the Lions faced an uphill battle from the opening whistle. Thailand tested early through Patrik Gustavsson, whose shot flicked off skipper Hariss Harun.

Singapore quickly found their rhythm and carved out opportunities. Prolific forward Ilhan Fandi proved a constant threat in the first half, testing Thai goalkeeper Kampon Phatomakkakul with a low free-kick and forcing a smart tip-over save from a header.

Following a near-miss from Song Ui-young just moments before the break, Singapore finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. Livewire Farhan Zulkifli raced through on goal, and while his initial effort was blocked by a sliding Kampon, Harhys Stewart pounced on the rebound, curling a brilliant follow-up from outside the box into the back of the net to put the Lions 1-0 up.

Penalty Heartbreak and Immediate Resilience

Thailand pressed for an equalizer after the restart, with Seksan Ratree firing wide early in the second half. Anthony Hudson’s hosts found their breakthrough in the 60th minute when Ryhan Stewart conceded a penalty following a swift Thai counter. Substitute Kakana Khamyok stepped up and rocketed the spot-kick into the top corner, leveling the score on the night and extending Thailand's aggregate cushion.

True to their trademark tenacity, Singapore hit back almost immediately. Minutes after conceding, Ryhan Stewart drove a dangerous, low cross across the face of the Thai goal, forcing defender Pansa Hemviboon into an unfortunate own goal that restored Singapore's lead on the night.

Late Drama and a Valiant Exit

As the clock wound down, Singapore threw everything forward in search of the aggregate equalizer. Goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud kept the Lions' hopes alive in the 79th minute with a stunning fingertip save, pushing Teerasak Poeiphimai's powerful effort onto the post and out for a corner.

Though the final whistle confirmed a 4-3 aggregate victory for Thailand, Gavin Lee’s squad left Bangkok having put on a display of incredible grit, character, and tactical bravery that signals a bright future for Singapore football. #ASEANFootball #ASEANUnitedFC #SgFootball
