  • Basketball: Reverse Pivot Footwork Drill for Beginners

Learn how to use the reverse pivot effectively to square yourself to the rim with Singapore basketballer Lim Jia Min PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG While plenty of emphasis in basketball has made in ball handling, one of the more commonly overlooked areas is in the footwork. A good basketballer needs to have good situation awareness in game, staying nimble and agile - being able to move quickly on the balls of your feet. Mastering the right footwork technique is essential for beginners before you can move on to more advanced aspects of the game. One of the more basic footwork techniques that is discussed here with Singapore national basketballer Lim Jia Min is the reverse pivot. What is a Reverse Pivot? A reverse pivot is a turn with your non-pivot foot that squares yourself to the rim. Most commonly, this starts with youfacing away from the end line while standing on the lane line. Whichever side of the basket you are on, keep your pivot foot planted while facing away from the basket, and reverse turn with your other foot, making sure that you put your body between the ball and the defender. PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG A successful pivot will see you square to the rim and facing the basket, with the defender now behind you. When executing this move, always remember to keep the ball protected in your shot pocket, ready to make a play be it for yourself or for a teammate. It is important to be able to effectively reverse pivot off either foot, as that makes you more confident in approaching from either side of the basket. To incorporate the reverse pivot footwork drill into your training, here is a step by step guide by Jia Min: 1. Read the Defender to see which side he / she is on 2. Reverse Pivot towards the side that is open 3. Use your body to block the defender and keep him / her behind your back PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Want to improve on your basketball skills and techniques? • Basketball: Know When to Use the Reverse Lay-Up

Singapore basketballer Delvin Goh explains when it is more effective to use a reverse lay-up, and the correct way to do it PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG When attacking in the game of basketball, you don't always have a clear drive to the basketball. In offense, which shots to use in each game scenario is important, as making good decisions form the base of a good basketballer, more so than technical skills alone. The reverse lay-up is a fundamental basketball shooting skill, and getting in practise so that it becomes second nature to you is going to give you that extra edge when it comes to competition. But just when exactly does one use the reverse lay-up? According to Delvin Goh of the Singapore Slingers and Singapore national basketball team, you use the reverse lay-up when there is a defender who attempts to block your drive to the basketball. In such a situation, it is important to note that as with other skills learnt so far, getting the defender to commit is essential before you execute your reverse lay-up. To do so, you need to fake your shot first. In steps, this is what it looks like: 1. Do a fake shot as the defender approaches 2. Duck below the defender's arms as he / she attempts to block 3. Make sure the defender is behind you before you go up for your reverse lay-up Always keep in mind the importance of step 3 before you go for your reverse lay-up, as every move in basketball has an intent. Try this out with your friends on court and share with us how it went! PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Want to improve on your basketball skills and techniques? • Basketball: Mastering the Triple-Threat Position to make it more Effective

The Triple-Threat Stance gives an offensive basketball player the options to shoot, mass or dribble PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG The Triple-threat position in basketball involves being in a position where you could do any of pass, shoot, or dribble with the ball. This is particularly advantageous for offensive players in basketball, and hence how the term "Triple-Threat Position" was coined. Although a commonly known fact in the basketball fraternity, and practised by basketballers of all levels, not everyone knows how to execute this well to maximise its effectiveness particularly for in-game situations. Generally, in order to get into the triple-threat position, a player needs to maintain a lower centre of gravity while keeping the ball close to your body and away from the defending player. To create greater distance between the ball and the defender, it is also recommended that you put one foot forward. According to Singapore basketballer Lim Jia Min, most amateur basketballers tend to forget the option to shoot, hence they remain in their straight legs when receiving the ball. This results in creating only a double threat instead of a triple threat stance. To make for a more effective triple-threat stance, try bending your knees when you receive the ball. The full sequence in steps looks like this: 1. Bend Your Knees when you get the ball 2. Look at the basket to sell the fake 3. Do any of shoot, make a pass, or dribble PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Want to improve on your basketball skills and techniques? • Basketball: How to Use the Pick and Roll, or Screen and Roll

We move from technical skills to more tactical tips, with Singapore basketballer Lim Jiamin teaching effective team up moves to take a defender out of the game PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Have you heard of screening in basketball? Otherwise known as the pick and roll in basketball, the move involves having one team mate placing their body directly in the path of a defender guarding you (the player with the ball), thus blocking the defender thus creating an opportunity for to roll off their screen / pick and move into space. This gives the player with the ball two options: either make a pass to a teammate, or drive to the basket or take a shot - making it an effective method to create space and taking an opponent out for a precious few seconds. PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Forming the Screen or Pick The player forming the pick or screen will need to know the direction in which the ball handler is moving, in order to set him or herself up correctly to screen the guarding defender. According to Singapore national basketballer Lim Jia Min, there are two common moves that usually result from a pick and roll. Variations and Possible Outcomes Using the Pick and Roll Group Drill 1: 1. Jab to shift the defender to one side after receiving the ball 2. Teammate comes in to set up the screen / pick 3. With the defender blocked, pass the ball back to the teammate for a finish! Group Drill 2: 1. Jab to shift the defender to one side after receiving the ball 2. Teammate comes in to set up the screen / pick 3. With the defender blocked, drive all the way to the basket for a simple finish PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG About Basketball 3x3, ActiveSG Cup 2022 The ActiveSG Cup 2022 is a basketball tournament for youths 15-19 years-old. • Basketball: How to do the Shammgod move, and use it correctly

This week we focus on the Shammgod, a popular move in basketball in tightly guarded spaces, in our Basketball Tips with Singapore's national basketballers PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG What is a Shammgod? Whether you are new to basketball and want to find out what a Shammgod is, or you've been playing basketball for some time and wanting to learn how to do a Shammgod move well, this article is for you! A Shammgod is basically a very popular basketball move used to beat a defender to buy you precious time and space as you dribble, particularly in tight spaces and in highly guarded areas. Selling the Toss It involves "selling the toss" with one hand, to get whoever is guarding you to commit, before quickly reaching across your body with the opposite hand and dragging the ball over, a quick shift of gears and momentum the other way to leave your marker rooted to the ground for a precious few seconds. In this third tutorial series with Singapore national basketballers, Delvin Goh goes through step-by-step how to execute a Shammgod well in any game. PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG The Shammgod in Steps Step 1: Sell the Toss Step 2: Wait for the Defender to Move Towards the Ball Step 3: Once they Commit, Pull to the Opposite Side Step 4: Explode Forward and Accelerate The key here is in successfully "selling the toss", and in exploding forward. Many youth basketballers do not observe the defender's positioning and reaction to the "toss" before going in the opposite direction, thus making the move a lot less effective. Acceleration in the opposition direction within the first second once the defender has committed is also critical to buy you time and space. • ActiveSG Cup Football Skills Challenge: The Shot Circuit

The Shot Circuit is a time-based shooting challenge, testing your football accuracy in front of goal PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG It's been a while since we've all played some decent football. After two years of no team sports, with social kickabouts limited to a disappointing 5 persons per activity, we are now edging closer to a comeback for social football, and at least play a decent two sided game! But what's football without banter and challenges? This week we bring you the first of a series of three football-themed challenges done in conjunction with the upcoming ActiveSG Cup 2022 Football 4v4 Tournament. The Shot Circuit Challenge Designed for forwards and attacking players, this time-based challenge is aptly labelled The Shot Circuit, and comprises five targets in goal. Each participant is required to go through a mini circuit which begins from outside the penalty box. It begins with two long-ranged attempts at goal before you progress into the penalty box. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Inside the penalty area, each participant will need to weave through a series of cones before executing a shot with proper technique across goal to the other corner. (Example: If you have weaved through cones on the right, you have to shoot across to the left side of goal) Goals scored on the same side as the cones will not be counted. Non Dominant Foot Shooting Required Participants will then have to do the same with the other set of cones, with one of these two attempts being done with your non dominant foot. Your final and fifth shot comes after returning to the penalty spot, where you execute a volley or half volley shot on the turn. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG The targets in goal comprise the two top corners (100 points each), two bottom corners (50 points), ball dangling in the centre of goal (75 points). The fastest participant to complete the circuit will receive an extra 50 points. How did our host and two freestylers fare? Watch the video to find out for yourselves! • Basketball Tips: What Makes a Crossover Effective?

Tips from Singapore basketballers Delvin Goh and Lim Jia Min on what constitutes a good crossover, and how many basketballers do it wrong PHOTO: SYUHAINI AZLIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Basketballers at every level attempt the crossover, but not all of them execute it well and effectively sell the dummy to an opponent. In this section of our basketball tutorial with Singapore national basketballers Delvin Goh and Lim Jia Min, we discuss the most important tip in order to make a crossover effective when beating your defender. Change of Direction Fancy footwork and incorporating a crossover into your dribbling combos may impress newbies, but to seasoned defenders who are able to read your body movement well, not shifting your body weight enough for a sudden change in direction is unlikely to throw them off balance. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Many younger players who have yet to master this skill may change direction a little bit, but not quite enough for it to be effective. This is the second of an eight part basketball tutorial series for the ActiveSG Cup 2022, Basketball 3x3 tournament. • Two Offensive Basketball Dribbling Combo Moves To Beat Any Defender

Singapore basketballers Delvin Goh and Lim Jia Min share personal favourite dribbling combos that have proven to be effective at international level PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG While it's a known fact that dribbling in basketball is a fundamental skill needed in any game, being able to beat a defender in tight spaces is especially important for offensive players during competition. In anticipation of the Basketball 3x3 tournament for the ActiveSG Cup 2022, Singapore national basketballers Delvin Goh and Lim Jia Min shared with SportPlus some of the effective dribbling combos they have used from their years of experience competing in international matches. Here are two of their favourite combos, broken down step-by-step. Delvin's Dribbling Combo Move: Step 1: Keep Your Body Low Step 2: Execute a Crossover Step 3: Between the Legs Dribble Step 4: Behind the Back PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Pro Tip: The key here is to keep your eye on the defender and make sure he or she commits to the direction you are feinting before going the other way. Once you have committed the defender, acceleration in the opposite direction is key to giving you those few extra yards in bringing the ball towards the rim. Jia Min's Dribbling Combo Move: Step 1: Read Defender's Shift Step 2: Crossover in the opposite direction Step 3: Explode forward once defender reacts Step 4: Take your shot with the extra space created PHOTO: JOHN YEONG, SPORTPLUS.SG Pro Tip: As simple as this dribbling combo move may sound, it has proven to be incredibly effective in most game scenarios. The key again is to keep your eye on the defender, and to read the direction in which they are moving. Once they have shifted their body weight in one direction, that is your cue to explode forward into space created to take your shot.
