  • ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 13]

Arthur Tong, ASICS athlete and Founder of Elevate Performance Coaching, shares his insights into ASICS’ upcoming release the Gel-Kayano 30, part of a series long known for its stability and protection. "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. Long known for its protective qualities, the Kayano series from ASICS is generally embraced by the running community as a stability shoe and the latest iteration is no different. Due to be launched on 1 July 2023, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 is designed to provide advanced stability and softer cushioning for runners, led by a new 4D Guidance System. The leading running brand has shared that this pair is likely to be best suited for over-pronators and can be used for a variety of runs, from 5km to even full-marathon distance runs. Weighing approximately 303g for the men’s version, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 has added stack compared to its predecessors and measures 40mm in the rearfoot with a forefoot height of 30mm for an overall 10mm heel-to-toe drop. The women’s version comes in at approximately 40g lighter. In this episode of "Sole Mates", we sit down with Arthur Tong , ASICS athlete and founder of Elevate Performance Coaching , to examine three key features of the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 that can potentially help you decide whether this pair is the right fit for you. Having tried out other ASICS shoes such as the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 as well, Arthur shares useful insights and comparisons between the two. Let’s find out what those features are and how you as a runner can benefit from them. The three main features include the new 4D Guidance System , PureGEL technology and the lightweight FF Blast Plus ECO cushioning . These new features have been incorporated into different aspects of the shoe to serve different purposes. Just how exactly do these improvements benefit runners, and who are they best suited for? Also, do Arthur and John feel that the $269 price point for this pair is justified? Read on to find out. New 4D Guidance System The latest edition of the ASICS Gel-Kayano series features one of the biggest updates - a foam unit that supports runners' feet by adjusting to pronation changes throughout their entire run. What exactly is pronation and why does it matter? Basically, Pronation refers to the natural movement of the foot that occurs during foot landing while running. The 4D Guidance System achieves advanced stabilisation based on biomechanical research which is already incorporated into the shoe. The sculpted midsole of the shoe provides more lateral compression while the medial foam guides your foot to the best position after every landing. Said Arthur: "I can already tell how stable it felt when I slipped on the shoe. Having tried on previous editions of the Kayano series, I noticed that the old designs are gone as there is no longer a plastic-like piece in the midfoot which feels too stiff. This helps you experience a more supportive and balanced stride during your runs." "This is how the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 guides my foot and adapts to my running form even after I start to fatigue and my running form changes over longer distances." Maximising Comfort and Performance with PureGEL Arthur added, “From the heel counter all the way down to the gusseted tongue, the shoe is more robust, and it really locks my foot down to ensure minimal shifting around in the shoe.” With an emphasis on comfort and performance, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 has not disappointed thus far. The new PureGEL technology is incorporated into the heel of the shoe which is used for enhanced shock absorption, softer landings and smoother transitions. ASICS shared that this feature is 65% softer than conventional GEL technology that can be found in other iterations of ASICS running shoes. The PureGEL technology is also strategically positioned below the heel for a smoother ride. These are great features that you can benefit from during your runs. The engineered stretch knit in the upper of the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 is also made out of supportive material that reduces the reliance on traditional overlays. This contributes to the flexibility and comfort of the shoe, while giving a breathable feel for the user. FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO Technology The midsole foam of the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 offers almost a cloud-like feel, enhancing overall comfort and makes it a soft and energising experience. The midsole is revamped with FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO technology in its cushioning complemented by a 4mm stack height increase. “I feel that it has given me a lot of protection across a variety of runs, and the plushness of it is just right,” added Arthur in reference to the foam of the shoe. Arthur's Experience Running In the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 "So far, I have been on a quick 30-minute break run and on a trail run in these shoes. As a triathlete, I was cycling for 6 hours before running in the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 . A break run means that I'm carrying fatigue from cycling prior to my run. I also did another run which was an 11km trail run around Macritchie Reservoir." "What I found interesting is that I found my runs comfortable despite my runs being of two very different natures. Experiencing running the shoe across different terrains helps me properly test out different features of the shoe as well. For example, the sole of the shoe gave me a lot more grip than I expected." “I thought that I would be slipping around a bit!” shared Arthur when talking about using the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 for his trail run. There was also no sign of wear and tear of the shoe after my runs which proves the durability of the shoe. I also personally benefited from the 4D Guidance System. As I have flat feet, I tend to pronate more the longer I run, causing my ankles to roll in. However, this feature helps to keep my ankle in place and slows down over-pronation. Who should use the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30? The ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 definitely caters to a wide range of runners. This pair especially suits runners who intend to use the shoes for a light recovery run. However, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 serves runners well for long slow distance runs as well. The wide base also caters to those with wider feet and enhances the stability of the shoe. What would he have changed about the shoe if he was part of the design team? "For future reiterations of the Kayano series, I would carry over the thin tongue design found in the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 to further improve the shoe," said Arthur. Final Thoughts And Ratings All in all, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 is a pair that lasts for very good reasons. This is the pair to use for plenty of miles. The shoe has developed advanced features that can benefit a wide range of runners which justifies its $259 price point. As someone who has used previous versions of the Kayano series, Arthur personally feels that he has benefited from the shoe’s features in a short duration of time as well. With that, here are Arthur Tong’s final ratings for the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 : Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 5/5 Stability : 5/5 Responsiveness : 4/5 Grippiness : 4.5/5 Value for Money : 4.5/5 This gives us an overall rating of 4.6 Soles out of 5 for the ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 . The ASICS Gel-Kayano 30 is going for S$259 and can be purchased from any ASICS official retail stores and ASICS.com from Monday, 3 July 2023 onwards. #ASICSRunning #ASICSSG #GelKayano30

  • Altra Via Olympus Review: Sole Mates [Episode 12]

Running enthusiast Sharon Choo reviews Altra’s latest release with host John Yeong in episode 12 of “Sole Mates”, a running shoes review series As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The Altra Via Olympus is a highly cushioned road running shoe that promotes maximum comfort. This pair is designed to allow your body to function naturally, with the rocker in the shoes to help with propulsion. For those not new to the Olympus series, the Via Olympus features the same max cushion that is found in Altra’s Olympus trail shoe. With a midsole stack height of 33mm, the Altra Via Olympus weighs in at 312 g  and 255 g for men and women versions respectively. It incorporates unique features such as Altra’s Original Footshape Fit, Altra Ego MAX and Natural Ride System, you may wonder, just how effective are these features? In this video, Sharon Choo shares her opinions on the pros and cons of the Altra Via Olympus. Sharon also aims to clock a new PB for her 10KM Lazada Run in July. Even if you have a different goal, every runner would have some kind of purpose they aim to use the shoe for. Be it for long-distance runs, interval runs, or simply your everyday pair, read on to find out how you can achieve optimal results with the Altra Via Olympus ! Engineered Mesh Upper This feature makes the shoe more breathable and lighter. The upper is built with breathable mesh in the forefoot, and reinforcements from the midfoot back to ensure plenty of support. “Did not experience any blisters or discomfort with the collar”, says Sharon The Altra Via Olympus ensures comfort for the user, giving the feet a ‘snug’ feel with its good heel lockdown. The plush angle collar also contributes to its comfort. The pair also has a ‘FootShape Original Fit’ which is the roomiest fit for Altra’s running shoes. Altra’s signature FootShape comfort gives your feet more space to sit naturally and is designed to address biological differences in men's and women's feet. I believe that it provides just the right amount of space in the toe box for your toes to spread out, allowing for more natural foot movement. Altra Ego MAX As mentioned, the Altra Via Olympus is equipped with a high stack height of 33mm. Altra's luxurious and lightweight EGO Max foam incorporated in the midsole. The VIA Olympus offers a fantastic blend of bounce and impact absorption. Simply put, this pair goes easy on your feet! This second feature of the Via Olympus gives runners a little extra bounce and added durability. The Altra EGO™ Max midsole foam technology might be the extra help I need to achieve that PB! It is definitely a substantial amount of bounce to propel me forward during my runs! Altra’s Balanced Cushioning platform also positions my heel and forefoot at an equal distance from the ground, encouraging better alignment and form. I personally felt that the shoe delivers decent bounce, with a lightweight luxurious feel. Although assistance from the shoe is important for runners, I like that the shoe also encourages proper form as well. Natural Ride System (NRS) This Natural Ride System includes a more natural, foot-shaped design with a 0mm heel-to-toe drop. It has metatarsal-specific shapes in the outsole to assist in proper foot mechanics and allow for more natural foot movement. Talk about fancy, right? Basically, think of it as a rocking chair that rolls back and forth. In this case, Altra’s rocker shape is designed to give the feeling of being propelled forward with each step of your run. It provides an efficient toe-off without taking away from your natural stride. For example, the pair allows my body weight to be distributed evenly across my feet. The Via Olympus has a steady, broad and durable base which are my plus-points of the shoe! My Personal Experience and Suggestions So far, I have taken the Via Olympus on 2 types of runs; a slow run and a tempo run. This allowed me to have two different types of running experiences with the pair as I had tried running at a slower and faster pace. Personally, I would recommend the Via Olympus for a slower run due to its foam being less responsive as compared to other pairs that I have used for tempo runs. “This pair of shoes is a stable pair” says Sharon, when referring to the Altra Via Olympus. The stability of the Via Olympus makes it more suitable for slower runs in longer distances whilst feeling comfortable. I am also still adapting to the zero drop height of the pair which can take some time to get accustomed to. This is a factor runners would need to consider when purchasing this pair. For those with bunions, this pair is definitely suitable due to its roomy toe box area. While this is a good feature, the shoe may also be less suited for runners with narrower feet. For future iterations of the shoe, I hope that Altra would make a version that has a slightly narrower toe box. One possible consideration is for Altra to make a ‘Standard' and ‘Wide’ version of the shoe to suit even more types of runners. Final Thoughts And Ratings Overall, the shoe delivers in terms of what it promises. It feels natural, provides comfort and is also durable enough for you to use the pair in the long run, literally! This shoe can help you rack up those miles if you are an entry-level runner as well. I hope sharing my experience with the Via Olympus helps you understand each feature better and possibly decide whether this pair suits your running needs. With that, here are Sharon’s final ratings for the Altra Via Olympus : Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 3.5/5 Stability : 4.5/5 Responsiveness: 3/5 Grippiness : 4.5/5 Value-for-Money : 3.5/5 This would result in an overall rating of 3.7 out of 5 soles for the Altra Via Olympus ! You can purchase the latest A ltra Via Olympus at SGD $359 from any iRun Store or online at iRun.com . #AltraRunning #ViaOlympus

  • Brooks Hyperion Elite 3 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 11]

Elevate Performance Running Coach and citizen athlete Neyton Tan reviews Brook’s advanced road-racing Super Shoe, the Hyperion Elite 3, in episode 11 of “Sole Mates” As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The Brooks Hyperion Elite 3 is Brooks' attempt at establishing itself as a high-performing, road-racing shoe for runners to get optimal results on race day. The latest version of the Hyperion Elite series maintains the same upgrade made to the Hyperion Elite 2: the DNA Flash Foam , with the first edition of the Hyperion Elite series utilising DNA Zero Foam technology instead. Weighing at approximately 229.6g, the pair of shoes is unisex. It incorporates a carbon plate that enhances the running experience as it allows runners to maintain efficient and powerful strides during runs. Just how effective are these features in the shoe? Do they justify its SGD$359 price point even as a supershoe? Does the pair only suit competitive runners? Read on and watch our episode with Elevate Performance Running Coach and citizen athlete Neyton Tan to find out more! In this video, Neyton Tan runs through the pros and cons of the Hyperion Elite 3 and provides his honest opinions after personally using the pair for his runs. There are three main features you can look out for to help you decide whether the shoe is the right fit for you. They include improvements to the upper, midsole, heel and collar of the shoe. The shoe measures at 27mm in the forefoot, and 35mm in the rearfoot. This gives an overall drop of 8mm. Besides this, the Hyperion Elite 3 also serves as a training shoe for runners to maximise their potential leading up to race day. Join Neyton as he summarises the benefits of each feature for you to consider before purchasing the pair! QuicKnit Technology One of the biggest updates of the Hyperion Elite 3. The QuicKnit technology is incorporated into the shoe’s upper so that it feels thick yet breathable. QuicKnit is an elastic fabric that has supreme durability qualities and offers just the right amount of support to give you that all-over locked-down feel. There are also no overlays, which gives the shoe a sleek and clean look aesthetically. I feel that the shoe’s lockdown and aesthetics help it appeal to more runners. Another feature of the upper that I like in the shoe is definitely the laces. “Laces similar to the Nike Alphafly” says Neyton The laces of the Hyperion Elite 3 can be compared to one of my other pairs of racing shoes that I own, the Nike Alphafly 2. When I tie my laces, I most likely do not have to re-tie them in the middle of training or even races. This is one of the most common problems runners can face with their shoes. The serrated edges around the upper of the Hyperion Elite 3 allows you to have a good locked-down fit with absolutely no worries about your laces coming undone! Comfort From the Get-Go The Hyperion Elite 3’s design has undergone improvements to ensure a snug fit and increased comfort, particularly in the heel section. The heel of the shoe now features a sturdy and a well-padded construction. This contributes to the comfort you feel upon putting on the shoe. As mentioned previously, the shoe has an overall drop of 8mm. During my runs, I tried to land on the midfoot and I did not find the pair unstable. I also did not feel any rockiness when I corner during my runs. Neyton says, “One of the roomier toe boxes I have felt” One key factor every runner should consider is the shoe’s toe box area. You do not want any hotspots or blisters on your feet. I can safely say that the toe box of the Hyperion Elite 3 is quite roomy. You can even consider going a half-size down for a snug feel as a race shoe. There are no specifications for men’s and women’s versions as it is a unisex shoe and I enjoyed their overall feel on my foot. This technology is combined with their Running Rapid Roll. DNA Flash Foam is firm and stable so that you get a faster ride with a slightly springier ride. Complemented by the shoe’s carbon plate, the toe-off is supposed to give you a great amount of energy return. I would like to admit that because of the DNA Flash midsole, it actually feels quite stiff and heavy. It is not as soft and plush as Brooks’ DNA Loft Midsole. This leads you to work harder during your training runs or race day. As such, I would recommend this pair as a training pair for race days instead. My Personal Running Experience So far, I have clocked a total distance of 15 km in this pair of shoes. They include 2 types of runs; 1 Interval run on the track, and another easy run. Durability-wise, the shoe is decent. For example, after 6 km of intervals on the track, I did not notice much wear and tear in the base of the shoe. Another difference in Brooks’ Hyperion Elite 3 and Nike’s Alphafly is the toe box area based on my experience. This is important as runners can notice discomfort in the toe box only after properly breaking into the shoe. For me, I tend to find blisters in the toe box area when I use my Nike Alphafly after some time. “No need to break-in” says Neyton, when referring to the Hyperion Elite 3. Comfort-wise it is easy, no hotspots and provides a nice comfy feel for the user. Definitely one of the plus-points of the shoe! Possible Changes For The Hyperion Elite 4? For future iterations of the shoe, I hope that Brooks would change the configuration of the carbon plate and the foam of the shoe while maintaining the same stability it already provides. In return, the foam can be made lighter and the carbon plate can provide runners with greater responsiveness in the shoe. Perhaps, you can consider this pair as a training shoe. The pair requires your legs to work harder as it does not provide too much responsiveness or the added ‘boost’ runners may look for in their shoe. By implementing the changes mentioned above, I believe it will definitely improve the running experience for future users and justify the Hyperion Elite 3’s higher price point better. Final Thoughts And Ratings Overall, the shoe would not be ideal for race days despite establishing itself as a racing shoe. The enhanced upper and lacing system are the strongest features of the shoe. However, you would expect greater responsiveness in a super shoe for your races which the Hyperion Elite 3 falls short of. The Hyperion Elite 3 is still a great shoe for speed training runs and intervals. Elite-level runners would benefit from this shoe for training but may want to consider other options for race day. With that, here are Neyton final ratings for the Brooks Hyperion Elite 3 : Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort: 5/5 Stability: 5/5 Responsiveness: 1/5 Grippiness: 2/5 Value for Money: 1/5 This would result in an overall rating of 2.8 out of 5 soles for the Hyperion Elite 3 ! You can purchase the latest Brooks Hyperion Elite 3 at SGD $359 from any iRun Store or online at iRun.com . #Brooks #HyperionElite3

  • Brooks Ghost 15 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 10]

Running enthusiast and Bouncefit coach Haw Jia Xuan shares her opinions on Brook’s latest daily trainer, the Ghost 15, with“Sole Mates” host John Yeong As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The Brooks Ghost 15 is known for the comfort and stability it provides as a daily trainer. Not only does it deliver a smooth ride, but it is also designed for speedwork and handles easy paces well thanks to its stability. The Ghost 15 goes back to the basics with its traditional design. The Ghost is one of Brooks' most-loved running shoes. With a soft feel, smooth ride, and trusted fit, the Brooks Ghost 15 delivers the comfort and performance runners want. Every runner has different preferences and priorities for their next pair. Be it speedwork or high-mileage runs, runners can expect ample cushioning in the Ghost 15. Although all Brooks shoes have cushioning, it can vary across categories and individual shoe styles. Weighing at 258g and 286.3g for womens and mens pairs respectively, the pair has a significant heel-to-toe drop of 12mm. Let’s find out whether the Ghost 15 would be the perfect fit for your next running adventure! In this video, Haw Jia Xuan explains different aspects of the Ghost 15 and how you can maximise your performance from Brooks latest edition of the Ghost series. Is the pair suited for all kinds of runners? How does the Ghost 15 sets itself apart from other daily trainers? If you have used previous reiterations of the pair, you may wonder, what’s new about the Ghost 15? After testing the Ghost 15 on two 5-kilometre runs around her neighbourhood, Jia Xuan shares her insights and experiences with the Ghost 15. There are several key features of the Ghost 15 that benefit runners. They include an enhanced cushioning, updated upper and also smooth transitions. Read on as Jia Xuan dives deeper into each feature of the pair! DNA Loft V2 cushioning This new feature of the Ghost 15 is achieved by providing a unique balance of rubber, air, and a less dense, lighter foam in the midsole of the shoe. This gives a ‘plush’ feel for runners. Runners can benefit from lighter-weight cushioning due to this updated feature of the Ghost 15. Unlike many modern-day trainers, this pair does not have any carbon plate incorporated into the shoe, which makes the shoe lighter as well. Jia Xuan notes that the foam of the Ghost 15 is still slightly firmer when compared to another pair of daily trainers in her rotation, which is Asics’ Gel Nimbus 25. Despite this, the Ghost 15 is also improved in other aspects of the shoe such as the upper which is what we will explore next! “Fits perfectly for me” Another update of the Ghost 15 showcases the engineered air mesh upper which provides comfort and breathability. 3D Fit Print technology is implemented in the upper for added structure as well. The wider forefoot in this version of the Ghost 15 fits perfectly for me as I have wide feet. I also feel that the mesh hugs my feet from the front to back quite nicely. There is also an eyelet reinforcement for a more comfortable and secure fit. This is in line with the trend these days with the Ghost 15 adding another heel lock to the shoe. The shoe now has an extended line of 7 eyelets as compared to 6 in the Ghost 14. Additions to the heel counter include a new thin and soft material, providing an excellent lockdown. There is definitely more cushioning in the heel collar area. Although the tongue is generously padded, I personally feel that it may not be quite breathable in Singapore’s hot weather especially for long-distance runs. A Pair For Heel-Strikers? "As mentioned previously, the Ghost 15 has a high heel drop measuring at 12mm. I believe the added cushioning definitely plays a part in the high heel drop. During my runs, I realised that this caused me to land closer to the heel despite being a mid-foot striker." Jia Xuan says, “I would recommend this more for heel-strikers” "Moreover, the toe box of the shoe has a lot of room. There are no hotspots. I did not have to worry about blisters too which can be a big factor when you purchase running shoes. I can also feel the smooth transitions of the shoe thanks to its soft midsole and segmented crash pad." "These features give the shoe an easy flow from landing to toe-off, which I can benefit from during my runs. Bearing all these features in mind, you may wonder, how does the Ghost 15 series set itself apart from other models?" All about Sustainability One special and important feature of the Ghost 15 is its environmental footprint. According to Brooks, The carbon emissions of the Ghost 15 are 9.27 kg CO₂eq, a 6% reduction compared to the Ghost 14. 24% of the total shoe weight is from recycled materials, with all the textiles in the upper containing recycled content. Most of the mesh, lace, tongue and collar lining is made from recycled content. As runners, we also need to be mindful of our carbon footprint when making such purchases as many of us have more than one running pair in our rotation. The Brooks 15 is a perfect example of how Brooks contributes to a more sustainable environment through its products. What’s next for the Ghost series? As a traditional daily trainer, the pair delivers what it promises to deliver. There is no carbon plate or anything else fancy in the shoe as compared to other modern daily trainers. However, there are some upgrades that can be made to the pair that will enhance the experience for users of the Ghost series. Although the overall grippiness of the shoe is fine, the outsole rubber is a little soft. This may not be durable enough for high mileage runs. The foam of the shoe can also be further improved by making it even softer as I feel that this shoe has firmer landings. You may not feel as much energy return or the added ‘boost’ to assist you in your runs as the shoe does not have any plates. Final Thoughts And Ratings Overall, the Brooks 15 aims to be a go-to daily trainer that provides a neutral and balanced ride for runners. While there are certain aspects of the shoe that can still be improved on, I believe that the Ghost 15 is taking steps in the right direction with its current upgrades. By identifying your own needs in a running pair first, you can definitely decide whether the Ghost 15 is the right fit for you! Here are Jia Xuan’s final ratings for the Brooks Ghost 15 : Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort: 4/5 Stability: 4/5 Responsiveness: 3/5 Grippiness: 3/5 Value for Money: 3/5 This would result in an overall rating of 4.1 out of 5 soles for the Brooks Ghost 15 ! You can purchase the latest Brooks Ghost 15 at SGD $209 from any iRun Store or online at iRun.com . #Brooks #Ghost15

  • The Dreaded Runner’s Knee: Common Running Injuries

Runner's Knee is an injury that impacts runners all around the world. Dr Bryan Wang of Beacon Orthopaedics takes us through the causes of the injury and how to navigate it Whether you are a casual runner or an athlete that undergoes strenuous training, you have probably heard of “Runner’s Knee”, also known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome , an injury often characterised as dull pain around the front of the knee (patella) and is symptomised by pain, grinding, or a clicking sound of the kneecap.  Despite its commonality among athletes, there is still conflicting discourse surrounding how it should be treated and ways we can prevent it. Through an interview with Dr Bryan Wang of Beacon Orthopaedics , we explore the complexities of this dreaded injury, allowing us to not only gain a deeper understanding of the anatomy behind the anguish but also how we can deal with the injury.  What exactly is Runner’s Knee?  So, what exactly is Runner’s Knee? In more clinical terms, it could be due to inflammation of the Patella Tendon, which is what we called Patellar Tendonitis . Other times, it could also be due to a muscle imbalance, causing slight pain and inflammation on the surface of the kneecap. We can also get the pain on the outer part of the knee such as in Iliotibial Band Syndrome.  Essentially, Runner’s Knee is more of a broad term used to describe various injuries surrounding the knee, accounting for 20 to 40 percent of all knee problems and the most common running injury presenting to a sports medicine clinic. What is Runner’s Knee caused by and how do I deal with it?  “Very often, it is an indication that perhaps the training load is a little bit too intensive and does not allow the soft tissue to recover, or it can be a metaphor of too much too soon for somebody when they develop this sort of pain,” said Dr Wang.  To prevent furthering the injury, Dr Wang recommends that when you first start to experience pain, the first thing that should be done is to take a few days of rest or reduce the training mileage and to see whether that helps resolve the pain. According to Dr Wang, if the pain does not become better then that is likely a sure sign of overtraining. Thus, you should continue giving your body a little bit of time to settle down and put a stop to training for the pain to resolve itself.  “However, if the pain remains persistent despite rest and taking anti-inflammatory medications, then perhaps it is prudent to see a doctor or an orthopaedic specialist for further assessment because it could indicate something serious,” added Dr Wang. Is it true that wearing the right type of running shoes can help prevent Runner’s Knee?  “I think with regards to proper footwear it's really important to minimise the risk of injury. We want to make sure that you have a pair of well cushioned shoes , ” he said. If the soles of your shoes have already run thin, it is important to change to a new pair of shoes.  A less commonly regarded method of preventing the injury is to have different pairs of shoes so you can rotate regularly. This enables various types of cushioning. Rotating your running shoes can change your body's position and prevent yourself from putting constant stress on a certain part of your body. Having shoes with different cuttings is also an effective way to get your body working in subtly different ways, which can make you less prone to injury.  “Depending on the biomechanics of the foot as well, depending on the knee action and things like that, you can get specific footwear to help with your running,” further backed up by Dr Wang.  If you're looking for the right pair of running shoes to help reduce the risk of injury, check out SportPlus.sg's own running shoes review series 'Solemates' here . Do running surfaces cause Runner’s Knee problems?  With regards to the running surface itself, generally uneven surfaces and hard surfaces can put increased load on the knee. Trail running , for example, especially going downslope, can sometimes result in the increased joint reaction forces on the knee, which can predispose someone to developing this risk of developing a pain in the knee.  “If you do feel like there is an increased pain on the knee when you run on uneven ground or when you do a lot of down slopes in the trails, perhaps it is good to either reduce the mileage or reroute back to somewhere on a flat ground and a well-cushioned surface.”  Can I change my running form to help reduce the risk of Runner’s Knee? While many running coaches believe that heel striking is a likely cause of the injury, Dr Wang offers a slightly different opinion, sharing that while heel striking could result in more loading on the spine which could lead to spine issues, it is not established as yet whether heel striking from running directly results in increased knee pain.  However, he does believe that being able to keep your body upright and not leaning excessively forward will certainly reduce excessive joint reaction force on the knee and can help to reduce overall knee pain.  Essentially, whether you are a heel striker or a runner who lands on their midfoot or forefoot, weight distribution over your knees are a great determinant on impact and pressure on your knees when you run. “Good running form is very important on top of proper footwear, of course, in terms of minimising the risk of injury to the knees,” advised Dr Wang, who is also an avid runner having participated in various marathons. Dr Bryan Wang is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, with an interest in Shoulder, Elbow, Knee and Sports injuries. He has more than 18-years of experience in the management of general orthopaedic conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries and fractures of the upper and lower limbs. With his extensive years of experience, Dr Bryan has seen countless injuries as a result of putting a strain on the human body. • What is the ASICS META: Time: Trials?

A 10km road race meant to challenge every runner's personal best, the ASICS META: Time: Trials has been scaled up and is back bigger and better than before Debuting in 2022, the global edition of the ASICS: META: Time: Trials was first held in Malaga, Spain in April while the Southeast Asian edition began in Bangkok, Thailand on 4 September 2022. The regional ASICS: Time: Trials is a 10km road race with the key objective of bringing together the running community to race and for each runner to beat his or her own Personal Bests (PB). The event got its name from the global edition where ASICS athletes from all over the world came together to race in their latest ASICS carbon-plated racers, METASPEED+™️ to beat their best timings. Runners who take part in the second Southeast Asian edition of the ASICS META: Time: Trials held in Cyberjaya, Malaysia on Sunday, 19 November 2023 can experience a scaled up event with greater mass participation of runners with different abilities. While more performance-driven runners are invited to race alongside top ASICS regional athletes to challenge their personal bests, the event also hopes to provide a platform for new runners or less-peformance driven runners to clock their first 10km race and have a taste of an adrenaline-pumping time trial. With that in mind, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with ASICS to help you answer those burning questions about the ASICS META: Time: Trials and what you can expect by signing up. What can participants of the ASICS META: Time: Trials expect by participating in the ASICS MTT? ASICS: Participants will each receive an exclusive ASICS event tee, a finisher medal (with paid medal customization service available), e-certificate, and attractive discount vouchers from ASICS and sponsors. What key products are being showcased for the ASICS META: Time: Trials? ASICS: ASICS pinnacle carbon-plated racers, METASPEED+™️ and the newly launched MAGIC SPEED™️ 3 shoes. Participants will also get to enjoy the pre-launch NOVABLAST™️ 4 shoes trial at the event ahead of its global launch in December. Why is 10km the race distance chosen for the ASICS META: Time: Trials? ASICS: In view of racing conditions across Southeast Asia, most runners tend to clock their Personal Bests for longer distances such as the half and full marathons outside of the region in cooler weather conditions. Hence ASICS decided on a 10km race distance with good competitive elements to challenge runners to beat their own records in Malaysia. In addition, the distance poses an attainable challenge to newer runners who can have a taste of the adrenaline pumping action either by completing their first race or clocking their Personal Best (PB). Share with us about the Rate Route for ASICS META: Time: Trials 2023 ASICS : With some good learnings from the last edition, ASICS is working towards an improved race course and conditions for the runners. Some takeaways include moving the flag-off time to a later time to address the humidity issue and changing from a 5km-loop course to a 10km loop course. How many participants took part in ASICS META: Time: Trials 2022? How many are expected for ASICS META: Time: Trials 2023? ASICS : Last year’s ASICS META: Time: Trials 2022 was an exclusive event that was capped at 300 pax for invited athletes, media, partners and METASPEED+™️ customers only. This year, the ASICS META: Time: Trials is an open event capped at 3,000 pax. Apart from the usual invited guests, members of public can also sign up for the mass participation event. Members of public can sign-up for ASICS META: Time: Trials 2023 at this link here . What are the key things to look out for at this year's ASICS META: Time: Trials? ASICS: This year participants can expect a very competitive line-up for the invitational Category, featuring some of the SEA Games medallists e.g. Sonny Wagdos and Goh Chui Ling and local top guns e.g. Men’s defending champion, Ikbolesen and Women’s defending runner-up, Amelia Musa. There will also be an exclusive pre-launch trial of the NOVABLAST™️ 4 shoes which will only be launched globally in December. There are also attractive lucky draw prizes including NOVABLAST™️ 4 shoes, GARMIN FORERUNNER 265, OAKLEY shades and many more. Looking to challenge yourself or beat your previous record over the 10km distance? Sign up for the ASICS META: Time: Trials here to experience the most exhilirating regional 10km road race of the year! #ASICS #METASPEED #MetaTimeTrials #FindYourSpeed

The FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 enshrinement ceremony will also take place in Singapore that week, giving fans a unique opportunity to cheer on past and present basketball stars. After becoming the first Asian city to host the FIBA Intercontinental Cup last year, Singapore will again play a part in making history when 2024 National Basketball League champions Tasmania JackJumpers become the first team from Oceania to compete in the tournament. This year’s Asian representatives Al Riyadi from Lebanon earned their spot at the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 after winning the inaugural Basketball Champions League Asia on June 15. Completing the line-up are Unicaja from Spain (Basketball Champions League Europe), Angola’s Petro de Luanda (Basketball Africa League), Argentinian outfit Quimsa (Basketball Champions League Americas) and National Basketball Association (NBA) G League team NBA G League United, ensuring participation from all five FIBA regions for the first time. "The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is a unique global experience in club basketball, but the 34th edition will set a remarkable milestone in basketball history. It's only fitting that Singapore, which ushered in the new era of the competition last year, will also provide the stage for its expansion to Oceania and for the FIBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony," commented FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. Roy Teo, Chief, Industry Development, Technology & Innovation, Sport Singapore said: “We are pleased to further our partnership with FIBA to grow our local sport ecosystem and reinforce Singapore’s position as a hub for hosting international sporting events such as the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup and FIBA Intercontinental Cup. This year, we are excited to host the Hall of Fame for the very first time and welcome some of basketball's biggest legends to our shores. We look forward to creating more sporting experiences, driving high performance and mass participation, and in turn inspiring both the basketball fraternity and the community.” The groupings for the 34th FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 are as follows: Each group competes in a single round robin format and the two group winners will square off in the Final on September 15 to determine the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 champion. The two group runners-up will meet in the 3rd-Place Game, while the teams that finish third in their respective groups will play for fifth place overall. “We are excited to welcome the continental champions to Singapore for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024. As a world-class destination for live sporting action, Singapore Sports Hub has hosted numerous international sporting events including two editions of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup and Asia’s inaugural FIBA Intercontinental Cup in 2023," said Yazed Osman, Group Head, Events & Placemaking, Kallang Alive Sport Management. "Come September, the community can expect thrilling basketball action on court and a wide range of experiential activities and entertainment off-court. We are driven to inspire more people and youths to play and watch the sport at the Sports Hub, the home of two premier basketball competitions." In addition to cheering on the top basketball teams, fans will get a chance to witness the induction ceremony for the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 on September 14 – the first time the event is held in Singapore, underlining the global character of the September FIBA Intercontinental event. USA's Reggie Miller and Serbia's Predrag Stojakovic headline the 2024 inductees, which also include fellow former players Miao Lijie of China, Danira Nakic-Bilic of Croatia, Kirk Samuel Penney of New Zealand, Romain Sato of Central African Republic, Skaidrite Smildzina-Budovska of Latvia and Italian-American coach Dan Peterson. • Youthful Squad for Singapore Table Tennis as Izaac Kuek and Zhou Jingyi Form Promising Team for Paris 2024 Olympics

Izaac Kuek and Zhou Jingyi youngest Singapore-born paddlers to qualify for and participate in an Olympic Games for Singapore The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) proudly announced its final lineup for the national table tennis team competing in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games during a press conference held today at the OCBC Arena at the Singapore Sports Hub. STTA President, Ms Poh Li San, introduced the athletes who will be representing Singapore in table tennis at the Tokyo 2024 Olympics - Zeng Jian (27) and Izaac Quek (18), with Zhou Jingyi (19), joining the press conference from Portugal where she is currently with her club, CTM Mirandela. Izaac and Zeng Jian both qualified after winning the both the Men’s and Women’s Singles events at the Southeast Asia Regional Qualification Tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand in May, while Jingyi qualified by virtue of her Asian ranking that was released on 11th June, following confirmation by the International Table Tennis Association (ITTF). Ms Poh said, “I would like to acknowledge the incredible perseverance shown by our players. Despite the challenges and setbacks, they continued to fight hard, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the sport. The qualification of Zeng Jian, Izaac and Jingyi is a testament to their dedication and hard work. It is a significant achievement and a proud moment for all of us.” This achievement has hit many firsts for Singapore table tennis. • Izaac is the youngest ever Singaporean male table tennis player and also the youngest ever Singapore-born male player to qualify for the Olympics. • Jingyi is the youngest ever Singapore-born female player to qualify for the Olympics and the first Singapore-born female to play in the Singles Events. • This is the first time that STTA will have two Singapore-born players qualify for a single Olympics Games. “The primary objective for this outing is to provide them with invaluable exposure and experience on the world’s biggest sporting stage. While winning a few games would indeed be a fantastic bonus, the true value lies in the growth and development they will gain from competing at this level”, Ms Poh added. “Qualifying for the Olympics has always been my goal from the start, and having achieved that goal, I am ready to give my best and make Singapore proud in Paris”, said Quek. Zeng Jian added, “Competing at the Olympics is a tremendous honour, I am focused and determined to bring my best game to Paris.” The players also revealed the Olympic jersey they will wear in Paris, designed by Raeanne Koh, a student in the Art Elective Programme (AEP) at Hwa Chong Institution. This year, STTA collaborated with HCI’s AEP students to create the Olympic jersey. Eight students submitted their designs, with Raeanne Koh’s design being selected as the winner. Looking ahead to the next Olympic games, Ms Poh said, “The STTA remains committed to working closely with coaches and parents to nurture similar talents like Izaac and Jingyi. We aim to help more of our young athletes achieve their Olympic dreams and look forward to strengthening our team for the LA Olympics in 2028.” #SgTableTennis #Paris2024

  • Recovery the Focus for Sydney Marathon Singapore Chapter Participants

Sydney Marathon Participants Learn about Recovery Tips and Hacks with The Muscle Lab, Simply Active Asia and WeAreReady.sg Singapore, 2 June 2024 - Some 54 Sydney Marathon bound Singapore participants were lucky enough to join in a recovery workshop specially curated for Sydney Marathoners by SportPlus.sg supported by Destination New South Wales and three local partners The Muscle Lab, Simply Active and WeAreReady.sg, after an originally scheduled mass run with 300 participants led by Fast and Free Running Club (FFRC) was cancelled due to inclement weather. The event is the second of three Sydney Marathon Singapore Chapter activations that is slated to take place in the months leading up to this year's Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS on 15 September 2024, as part of overall efforts to engage with over 400 runners from Singapore who have signed up for this year's Sydney showpiece. Among international participants, Singapore remains as the country with the second highest number of registrants for the Sydney Marathon, after organisers of Sydney Marathon announced that both the full marathon and 10KM categories had sold out. The second Sydney Marathon Singapore Chapter run that was led by popular local running community Fast and Free Running Club had witnessed 300 sign-ups by Thursday - less than a week after registrations opened, but had to be called off after early morning showers on Saturday and slippery road conditions across Singapore threatened the safety of participants for the run. "We are super bummed out that the run had to be cancelled, but we hope everyone who participated in the recovery workshop benefited from it and we definitely hope to have more opportunities to conduct Sydney Marathon related runs in the near future," said Dadima Kimmex, captain of Fast and Free Running Club. Participants who had signed up for a specially curated recovery workshop with Sydney Marathon Singapore Chapter partners were treated to some useful recovery tips. From nutrition and fueling for a marathon - different types of gels available on the market for runners and the benefits of Pillar Performance's triple magnesium to aid with athlete's sleep and recovery; to benefits of various massage therapy techniques and self-release techniques, useful types of stretches before and after training; and recovery tools that are available by Therabody such as percussion therapy including the latest Therabody PRO PLUS which includes heat, cold and infrared therapy. Speaking after the event John Yeong, founder of SportPlus.sg, shared that it was unfortunate that the run had to be called off, but remained satisfied that the recovery workshop was a success and served its purpose of enhancing the runners' experience for this year's Sydney Marathon. He added that the number of sign-ups for the run gives the organising team a confidence boost that efforts towards publicising the Sydney Marathon with the Singapore running community has gained significant traction, compared to a year ago when there was little awareness of the event in Singapore ahead of the 2023 Sydney Marathon. "I think the team has done really well to put everything together in such a short time, and to react well with contingeny plans in place after this morning's run was called off," said John. "We are also grateful for the incredible support from each of our partners who have come in to share their knowledge and expertise in their respective areas to benefit runners in the community so that they can train with greater confidence in the lead up to this year's Sydney Marathon." Sydney Marathon Singapore Chapter part 2 with Fast and Free Running Club was the second Sydney Marathon activation to happen in the span of two months in Singapore, with one final run slated to happen in August with ASICS Running Club and Superhero Runners. Registrants of this year's Sydney Marathon residing in Singapore can enjoy exclusive discounts from Sydney Marathon Singapore Chapter partners.
