  • New Balance SuperComp Elite v3 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 3]

This week in our running shoes review series "Sole Mates", host John Yeong has a chat with Sebastian Cheong, co-founder of Superhero Runners, about New Balance's latest racing shoe - the New Balance Super Comp Elite v3 As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators and Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite v3 is the latest version of New Balance's high-performance running / training shoe designed for elite-level athletes and serious runners. But how would they fare against other shoes in the same bracket, and would they make the perfect sole mates for race day or your fast runs? As with all our shoe review episodes, we first share the shoe's specs and latest upgrades and then bring in every day runners for an honest opinion about what they like and dislike about each of the shoes we feature. Key Highlights So what's new about the shoe? What are significant upgrades from earlier editions, and is it worth your money to get an upgrade? 1. Enhanced cushioning Features New Balance's FuelCell technology, the. REVlite midsole, which provides enhanced cushioning and responsiveness compared to the previous version. Designed to be lightweight and offer exceptional energy return, providing a more comfortable and efficient ride 2. An Improved Synthetic Upper Has an improved upper that is made with a breathable mesh material that is more lightweight, flexible and allows for increased airflow. Keep the feet cool and comfortable during long runs 3. Re-designed Outsole Features a Dynaride rubber compound, which provides enhanced traction and durability. The Dynaride material is designed to grip on a variety of surfaces, making it suitable for use on roads, tracks, and light trails 4. Improved Fit The V3 has a more comfortable and secure fit compared to the V2. The shoe features a bootie construction that eliminates the need for a traditional tongue, which helps to reduce pressure points and provide a more customized fit 5. Enhanced Heel Support Has an improved TPU heel counter that provides better support and stability for the foot. The heel counter is designed to lock the foot in place and prevent it from slipping SportPlus.sg First Impressions The new synthetic upper gives the shoe an overall snug and supportive feel, while the tongue doesn't move around too much since it comes together in one piece which increases overall comfort of the shoe.   The shoe does a pretty decent job when it comes to overall stability and lockdown. Some runners have likened this to the trainer version, the SuperComp Trainer, which shows that it does have a similar ride and overall feel, but the benefit of the Supercomp Elite v3 is that it's a lot lighter. The Energy Arc technology is one of New Balance's key selling points for this shoe and we feel it does have a bit of a rocker feel although the toe-off feels a bit less responsive until you open up your strides and probably hit a faster pace. The midsole itself comprises of New Balance's higher end Fuel Cell foam, its most responsive foam doubled up with a carbon fiber plate in between which is supposed to give you added responsiveness in racing. One thing that did surprise host John Yeong though, is the overall drop of the shoe, which is just 4mm (40mm in the rearfoot and 36mm in the forefoot), which is less steep that the average 8mm found in most race shoes / supershoes from other running brands.   Sebastian Cheong's Experience Running in the New Balance Fuel Cell SuperComp Elite v3 How much mileage have you clocked in the New Balance Fuel Cell SuperComp Elite v3? I've run over 80 km, including a half-marathon 21km run. The rest were all fast 10km tempos. I still find it is okay, and I don't find any discomfort or blisters being formed when I run in this pair of shoes. I personally may not recommend it or would wear it for runs more than 21km because it’s a soft shoe and it might not hold for the entire journey of my longer runs. What do you like about the shoe? I like the design of the shoe, as it shows the ‘NB’ logo which is aesthetically cool and looks futuristic, giving it a really nice look like an elite shoe. I mean if we are not an elite runner, we can now at least look like an elite.   The synthetic material is supportive over your legs, so you won't feel like your legs are moving around your shoes too much, and the tongue will not just move away as some of the shoes with separate tongues tend to do. What would you like to see changed in future iterations of this shoe? One area for improvement for me would be the heel collar area as it tends to rub against my ankle bone, which caused me a bit of discomfort and may cause abrasions for longer runs. Who would you recommend this shoe to? I personally would recommend this for those who want to do a fast 5-10k run. This is not so much for the slow, long distance kind of runs or recovery runs. Overall Shoe Rating Taking all this into consideration Sebastian would give the New Balance SuperComp Elite v3 an overall rating of 4 out of 5 soles. New Balance SuperComp Elite v3 is currently going for S$329 and can be purchased from any iRun Store or online . #NewBalanceSG #NewBalanceRunning

  • Nike Invincible 3 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 4]

In Episode 4 of our running shoes review series "Sole Mates", host John Yeong discusses the Nike Invincible 3 with Sharon Choo, an educator, visual artist and running enthusiast As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The Nike Invincible 3 offers a range of unique and innovative features that make it an excellent choice for runners looking for a comfortable and high-performance shoe that offers both support and durability for long-distance running.   When it comes to road running shoes, there are several factors to consider in terms of performance, including cushioning, support, weight, and traction. It's important to choose a shoe that fits well and provides the necessary features for your particular style of running. Let’s find out whether the Nike Invincible 3 could be the perfect Sole Mate for you! As with all our shoe review episodes, we first share the shoe's specs and latest upgrades, and then bring in everyday runners for an honest opinion about what they like and dislike about each of the shoes we feature.   Key Highlights So what's new about the shoe? What are significant upgrades from earlier editions, and is it worth your money to get an upgrade?   1. Better Cushioning What’s new in the midsole is a thicker layer of ZoomX React foam, providing better cushioning and energy return. The foam is also more durable and actually retains its shape better over time. This makes it a lot firmer than the previous edition, the Nike Invincible 2. 2. Improved Fit & Breathability Nike Invincible 3 features a Flyknit upper that is soft and flexible and designed to hug the foot more closely, providing a comfortable and secure fit. It also provides excellent breathability, keeping the feet cool and dry during runs.   3. Stability & Support This shoe also has a wider base compared to previous versions, which provides better stability and support. This edition features a guidance rail on the sides of the midsole that helps prevent overpronation and keeps the foot in a more neutral position, reducing the risk of injury. 4. Improved Traction The rubber outsole of the shoe has a waffle-like pattern, deeper lugs, and a better grip that provides excellent grip and durability. It was redesigned to provide better traction. More flexible and responsive for other runs. As compared to the previous version, which has fewer patterns and shallower lugs. Sharon Choo's Experience Running in the Nike Invincible 3 How much mileage have you clocked in the Nike Invincible 3? I've run over 80–100 km in this pair, and have also taken this pair of shoes out on both short and long runs. These comprise recovery runs, tempo runs and walks. What do you like about the shoe? I do enjoy the look of this pair of shoes, and they look more sleek. On top of that, ZoomX is very bouncy, and foam is used in the Vaporfly and Alphafly. It is not exactly designed to propel you forward, but it is designed to really cushion your stride and make it bouncy to relieve the extra effort on an easy run – it is a max cushion shoe (sink in plushness as its cushion is strategically placed). What would you like to see changed in future iterations of this shoe? Due to the steep transition and angle (40mm, straight down to 31mm), I tend to land on my forefoot when running. Because of the way I have adapted my landing (landing more on the forefoot), I don’t use the shoes for an easy, recovery run, unlike Invincible 2 and Invincible 3. These now serve more like a tempo shoe for me. With the shoe feeling a bit bulky and the bed transition not feeling as smooth, I will need some effort to get to the sweet spot. Who would you recommend this shoe to? Both recovery day runners and race day runners also it depends on the runners running gait. Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4/5 Stability : 5/5 Responsiveness : 4.5/5 Grippiness : 4.5/5 Value for Money : 3.5/5 Taking all this into consideration, Sharon would give the Nike Invincible 3 an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 soles. Nike Invincible 3 is currently going for S$269 and can be purchased from any iRun Store or online. #Nike #NikeRunning #NikeInvincible3

  • adidas Ultraboost Light Review: Sole Mates [Episode 5]

Episode 5 of our running shoes review series "Sole Mates" sees us welcome Chermaine Zhou, content creator and running enthusiast, who discusses the adidas Ultraboost Light with host John Yeong As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The adidas Ultraboost is a popular line of running shoes from adidas that is designed to provide comfort, support, and energy return to the wearer. The Ultraboost Light is a specific version of this shoe that is designed to be even lighter and more breathable than the original Ultraboost.   A good pair of neutral running shoes should fit snugly but comfortably, provide adequate cushioning and arch support, and be breathable, durable, flexible, and lightweight. By taking these factors into consideration, you can find a pair of neutral running shoes that will help you run comfortably and safely.   As with all our shoe review episodes, we first share the shoe's specs and latest upgrades, and then bring in every day runners for an honest opinion about what they like and dislike about each of the shoes we feature. Key Highlights & Specifications So what's new about the shoe? What are significant upgrades from earlier editions, and is it worth your money to get an upgrade if you already own a previous Ultraboost series pair of shoes?   1. Updated Upper The adidas Ultraboost Light features an updated upper that is even more breathable and lightweight than previous versions. This helps to keep your feet cool and comfortable, even during long runs   2. Enhanced Support Added additional support features to the shoe, including a torsion system that helps stabilize the foot and a molded heel counter that provides additional support and helps prevent slippage 3. New Midsole adidas claims the boost technology has been updated in the midsole of the Ultraboost Light to provide even more cushioning and energy return.   The shoes have an overall stack height of 22mm in the rearfoot and 40mm in the rearfoot, giving us an overall drop of 10mm.   4. Improved Traction The outsole of the Ultraboost Light has been updated to provide even better traction on a variety of surfaces. This helps runners maintain their footing and stay stable during runs. Chermaine Zhou’s Experience Running in the Adidas Ultraboost Light   How much mileage have you clocked in the Adidas Ultraboost Light? I ran about 21km in these shoes in dry conditions, though I have yet to try them in wet conditions as yet. From what I understand though, this shoe is also part of the adidas x Continental rubber partnership , so the traction and overall grip should be very decent, and I’m really looking forward to trying it out in different weather conditions.   What do you like about the shoe? I really like the colour of the shoe and I think most girls can relate to this (aesthetics of a shoe). I also love that it's both fashionable and functional. Whether at the gym, on a run, or for casual wear, the Ultraboost Light is ready to do the job. As I am more of a heel striker, this is also a really good shoe for my running style with the added cushioning. While there are many other running shoes that are lighter, the Ultraboost Light still manages to be a true running shoe while also excelling in the fashion department for everyday wear. What would you like to see changed in future iterations of this shoe? Perhaps the difference is that the rocker in this pair is not as defined as I would like. I hope they would have a bit more cushioning for forefoot runners. But for runners who prefer that stable bounce in each stride, this would be a perfect pair.   Who would you recommend this shoe to? I think it would suit a large range of runners, from beginner runners to those doing recovery runs and using it as a daily trainer training up to a half marathon or marathon in this pair, and I can see it going the distance in terms of mileage. Would definitely be a part of my daily trainer running rotation. Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4/5 Stability : 4/5 Responsiveness : 3.5/5 Grippiness : 4/5 Value for Money : 3.5/5 Taking all this into consideration, Chermaine would give the adidas Ultraboost Light an overall rating of 3.8 out of 5 soles. The adidas Ultraboost Light is currently going for S$289 and can be purchased from any iRun Store or online. #adidas #adidassg #ultraboostlight

  • UA Flow Velociti Elite Review: Sole Mates [Episode 6]

Episode 6 of our running shoes review series "Sole Mates" sees us chat with Soh Rui Yong, a 2-time SEA Games Marathon Gold Medalist, who discusses the UA Flow Velociti Elite with host John Yeong As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. Carbon plates and super shoes has captured the imagination of runners the world over, but not everyone understands the need for a variety of shoes in your shoe rotation and the correct use for each type of shoe for the nature of your run. This week on "Sole Mates" we turn our attention to the UA Flow Velociti Elite , Under Armour's first foray into full-length carbon plated road racing shoes. How well would they fare in a world of Alpha Flys and Metaspeeds? We ask Soh Rui Yong , who is no stranger to elite competition from track races to full marathons, about what he looks for in a good race shoe.   As with all our shoe review episodes, we first share the shoe's specs and latest upgrades, and then bring in every day runners for an honest opinion about what they like and dislike about each of the shoes we feature. Key Highlights & Specifications So what's new about the UA Flow Velociti Elite compared to earlier shoes from the UA Flow series? What are significant updates from earlier editions of UA Flow running shoes, and is it worth your money to get an upgrade?   1. Updated Upper The UA Warp 2.0 offers a lightweight lockdown and allows for increased breathability compared to earlier editions of the UA Flow series. Its construction keeps the foot in place during fast movements without weighing the shoe down. The upper materials used allow ample airflow within the shoe, keeping feet cool and making for more comfortable feet. It's a great option for those seeking containment and support in a lightweight and breathable shoe. 2. Midsole The midsole of this shoe is what Under Armour markets as the game-changer. The Pebax foam upper section is said to deliver higher energy return, while the one-piece Flow Foam on the lower section provides responsiveness and long-lasting cushioning. That said, Rui Yong did caution that performance racing shoes are generally less durable than your daily trainers on average, so use these shoes for the right types of runs. The result is a consistent and comfortable ride that can handle regular use without compromising performance or comfort. The unique combination of cushioning and energy return can help improve comfort and performance for runners. 3. Enhanced Support This shoe is designed with support in mind. It features a torsion system that stabilizes the foot and a molded heel counter that prevents slippage and provides extra support. These features work together to create a secure and stable fit, making this shoe a great option for those who need extra support during their runs. 4. Stack Height & Drop   An increase in stack height from earlier Flow series shoes which are generally seen as racing flats, with the Velociti Elite having an overall stack height of 36mm in the heel and 28mm in the forefoot, for an overall drop of 8mm. Soh Rui Yong's Experience Running in the UA Flow Velociti Elite   What do you like about the shoe? The UA Flow Velociti Elite is by far the most cushioned Under Armour shoes for competition, which is really important for me. But what I love most about this shoe is how lightweight it is. It's incredibly responsive and gives me the support I need during my runs. What would you like to see changed in future iterations of this shoe? I think the UA Flow Velociti Elite is already pretty impressive, and I feel privileged to have played a part in the development of this shoe having raced in the protoype version in the 2021 Valencia Marathon. But if I had to choose one thing to improve, it would be the weight. If they could somehow add even more cushioning without adding more weight, that would be great too. But I know that's asking for a lot.   Who would you recommend this shoe to? This shoe is definitely designed for speed. It's perfect for fast sessions on the track or on the road with a marathon pace or slower. I wouldn’t recommend someone to use this for slow jogs as it just doesn't provide the same level of responsiveness that you would need for a slower pace. So, while I would definitely recommend this shoe for faster running, it may not be the best choice for everyone. Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4.5/5 Stability : 5/5 Responsiveness : 4.5/5 Grippiness : 5/5 Value for Money : 4/5 Taking all this into consideration, Rui Yong would give the UA Flow Velociti Elite an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5 soles. The UA Flow Velociti Elite is currently going for S$299 and can be purchased from any Under Armour stores, online at UA.com or via iRun Singapore . #UnderArmourSG #UAFlow #UAFlowVelocitiElite

  • New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 7]

Co-founder of Superhero Runners and Group Fitness Instructor Nelson Wong is next up in our running shoes review, as he shares with host John Yeong his thoughts on the versatile New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. Designed as a neutral running shoe that is suitable for a variety of distances and trainings, from short and fast to longer, slower runs, the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4's most notable feature is its TPU plate, a plastic plate that sets it apart from other daily trainers of the same bracket. Measuring 31mm in the rearfoot and 25mm in the forefoot, the New Balance FuelCell Propel V4 has an overall heel-to-toe drop of 6mm which keeps it within the average range of other shoes of the same bracket. Having rolled out the hugely popular SuperComp Trainer in 2022 that was widely well-received, there was much hope and anticipation in the FuelCell Propel V4. Given the amount of features and New Balance technology packed into this budget trainer, we would say while it hasn't quite measured up to the SuperComp Trainer, it is still pretty value-for-money.   As with all our shoe review episodes, we first share the shoe's specs and latest upgrades, and then bring in every day runners for an honest opinion about what they like and dislike about each of the shoes we feature. Key Highlights & Specifications So what's cool about the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 and are the updates significant enough and worth your money to get an upgrade?   1. FuelCell Technology The new foam formulation in the V4 provides a more responsive and energetic feel for the runner. The midsole FuelCell foam is a higher grade as compared to the Fresh Foam as it delivers a propulsive feel to help runners drive forward. The pair’s plastic TPU plate does not give the shoe a very strong spring but instead adds more stability for long runs. 2. Breathable Upper Provides better breathability and a more secure fit. The upper features a no-sew construction for a sleek fit. It is also designed with fewer overlays to reduce weight and improve comfort. 3. Ground Contact EVA Outsole The New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 is made from a lightweight EVA material that provides traction and durability. This makes it ideal for runners who intend to use the shoe to run in wet conditions or even on different terrains. 4. Internal Heel Counter Has a decently padded internal heel counter which does not slip as much, providing better support and a more secure fit. 5. Molded Footbed The shoe has a molded footbed that provides additional comfort and support to the foot. Nelson Wong’s Experience Running in the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 How much mileage have you clocked in the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4? I’ve run around 40 kilometres in this shoe. I think it’s really important that the 6mm drop of this shoe did not put undue stress on my calves, which is something I sometimes face. I usually land mid-foot to front foot for my strides during my runs and I love that I do not feel any discomfort after running distances beyond 10km in this pair of shoes. What kind of conditions have you worn these shoes out for? I didn't really try the shoes for wet weather as it has been pretty dry for the past two weeks. However, the pair works fine for dry weather. What do you like about shoes? Firstly, I like this pair of shoes because it is light. Secondly, they are also a stable pair that I feel is quite versatile. Not only can I use them for normal 6-10 km recovery runs, I can also use them for longer runs. Moreover, the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 allows me the flexibility of runs of higher tempo with ease, without putting in too much effort. What would you like to see changed in future iterations of this shoe? For the next version of this pair of shoes, it would be great if the upper of the shoes can be a bit more breathable. As for the heels of the shoe, I do not have any problems with it, but it would be nice for the overall feel if more material can be removed from the collar. Who would you recommend this shoe to? I would recommend the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 for different types of runners ranging from beginners to elite marathoners due to its versatility. Besides the speedwork, this pair is a daily trainer that fits into all kinds of runs, even up to marathon-distance.   Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4.5/5 Stability : 4/5 Responsiveness : 4/5 Grippiness : 4/5 Value for Money : 4/5 Taking all this into consideration, Nelson Wong would give the New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 soles. The New Balance Fuelcell Propel V4 is currently going for S$179 and can be purchased from any iRun Singapore store or online. #NewBalance #NewBalanceRunning

  • Nike Pegasus 40 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 8]

Singapore masters runner Paul Martin joins host John Yeong in this latest episode of "Sole Mates", a running shoes review series in collaboration with iRun Singapore, to share his thoughts on the work horse daily trainer shoe of Nike - Pegasus 40 As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. To date the Nike Pegasus series has been popular among runners for its durability and comfort. It is a model that continues to ensure high performance to help runners achieve all their training goals. Known as the work-horse shoe of Nike, the Nike Pegasus 40 can initially come across as a firm ride that not everyone is a fan of, but after breaking into the shoe after a couple of runs it can benefit all kinds of runners ranging from entry-level runners to seasoned runners. Here we go through various highlights and key features of the shoe, for runners who are considering whether the Pegasus 40 would be a great fit in their shoe rotation. Does the latest Nike Pegasus 40 really live up to the hype though, one might ask? Is it worth jumping on the bandwagon for runners who have never owned a pair of Nike Pegasus? We can safely say the Pegasus 40 is one of the most all-rounded pairs to date, but don’t take our word for it, let’s find out why below with Singapore masters runner Paul Martin ! Paul shares his personal experience running with the Nike Pegasus 40 , having previously owned a Nike Pegasus 37. So what are some of the key specs and features runners can expect from this latest iteration of the Nike Pegasus? Paul says, "After experiencing running in the Nike Pegasus 40 , there are five (5) key focus areas or features of the shoe that I find really beneficial to me." 1. Reconfigured Lacing System Starting with a new highlight exclusive to the Pegasus 40 , the upper of the shoe has a reconfigured lacing system. The Flywire locking system in the Nike Pegasus 39 was removed and replaced with a little band that goes down to lock down the laces. You can simply close the circle at the side of the shoe to lock your foot in place. The improved lacing system is accompanied with internal linings and padding throughout for an incredibly smooth fit. With this feature, you can expect tighter support for your feet during your runs. 2. Zoom Air Units Now if you’re new to the running scene, you may have no idea what these things are. Simply, they are small air units with strong, tensile threads inside. The air units basically give you a bouncy, springy sensation and an energised feel. One unit is located in the forefoot and the other in the heel for quick responsive cushioning. This would benefit both forefoot and heel strikers. The shoe measures at 33mm in the heel and 23mm in the forefoot, leading to a 10 mm drop. Nike React technology is also incorporated into the Pegasus 40 , meaning that its lightweight, durable foam delivers a smooth and responsive ride. According to Nike, Nike React technology is 11% softer and offers 13% more energy return than its previous softest and bounciest cushioning. Now if you’re someone who wants that extra ‘push-off’ with each step, this pair will deliver exactly that! 3. A Fit For Everyone The Pegasus has a midfoot band that provides a more secure feel. Different runners with different foot arches do not need to worry as well! The redesigned midfoot strap gives you a more moulded fit to your feet for all sized arches. An engineered circular pattern is incorporated into the pair that allows it to adapt to your feet. 4. Any Climate And Terrain Besides the added cushioning at the tongue and heel of the shoe, I love the grippiness of this shoe! The waffle-inspired pattern provides better traction for the road and also on slippery surfaces as well. Its highly tuned single-layer mesh allows great airflow for better breathability, making it ideal for running Singapore’s hot and humid conditions. As your weight is also spread evenly across your foot, you can definitely expect a smoother ride. Lastly, what purpose would the Pegasus 40 best serve for runners? 5. Miles, Miles, Miles The “Workhorse shoe of Nike”. Marketed as a daily trainer, it’s all about clocking the miles in with the Pegasus 40 . Use it as a walking pair, or even use it to the gym! This pair is your go-to if you’re only bringing one pair overseas too. I would also not advise seasoned runners to not expect new Personal Bests in this pair. I believe that the pair can improve its responsiveness if Nike incorporates a nylon or carbon plate into future reiterations of the Nike Pegasus. That is also why I would recommend the shoes for Entry-level runners who want to clock their miles in over seasoned runners. Final Thoughts And Ratings I hope you can benefit from my experience of running in the Nike Pegasus 40 . Although the pair is on the higher price range retailing at SGD $219, these daily trainers do provide many benefits for all types of runners. However, it would be good if it could be priced slightly below $200. With all things considered, here are Paul Martin's final shoe ratings for the Nike Pegasus 40 : Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4.5/5 Stability : 4.5/5 Responsiveness : 3.5/5 Grippiness : 4.5/5 Value for Money : 3.5/5 This would result in an overall rating of 4.1 out of 5 soles for the Nike Pegasus 40 ! If you think this pair is the right fit for your running needs, you can purchase the Pegasus 40 from any iRun Store or online at iRun.com . #Nike #NikePegasus40

  • Saucony Kinvara 14 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 9]

Avid community runner and content creator Melissa Foo discusses Saucony’s latest iteration of the Kinvara series, the Kinvara 14, on our latest episode of “Sole Mates”, a running shoes review series in collaboration with iRun Singapore As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. The Saucony Kinvara 14 establishes itself as an agile and lightweight trainer which provides runners a smooth ride. It’s designed for speedwork but it can handle easy paces equally well thanks to its stability. This model caters to runners who expect comfort, responsiveness and versatility from their pair of running shoes. According to Saucony.com, the Men’s Kinvara 14 weighs at 200g, 13g lighter than its predecessor even though it has a thicker midsole and insole. The latest edition of the Kinvara series still has the signature heel-to-toe drop of 4mm. Not only that, the pair also contains recycled materials, contributing to sustainability in our environment! In this video, we discuss unique aspects of the shoe and how the Saucony Kinvara 14 can possibly suit your running needs. Is the Saucony Kinvara 14 simply another daily trainer for avid runners to add to their collection? Does the Saucony Kinvara 14 serve multiple purposes for new, entry-level runners? Today, runners have countless options when picking out a new running pair. Read on to find out whether the Saucony Kinvara 14 will be your next value-for-money purchase! To help you decide, avid runner Melissa Foo shares her insight into the Saucony Kinvara 14, and how you can benefit from it effectively. Melissa will be sharing her key opinions of the shoe that she enjoys after clocking about 30 kilometres in the pair. Lightweight and Breathable The Kinvara 14 has been updated with a lighter and more breathable upper together with a thicker midsole. The women’s pair of the Kinvara 14 weighs only 117g in comparison to Kinvara 13’s 184g! The shoe is also light because the tongue is thin. Melissa noted that the pair can be used for “easy, recovery runs” and even “Negative Splits” where runners start slow before picking up the pace towards the end of their runs. As for the mesh, it is akin to a racing mesh. Now you may wonder, how does a racing mesh-like material even help? The mesh of the Kinvara 14 is made out of a really porous material with high breathability.. This means that it is more suited for warm climates than cool ones. The material helps keep the foot cool and dry during exercise as well, making it ideal for Singapore’s sunny weather! Improved PWRRUN+ cushioning I personally believe that the shoe’s high responsiveness is due to its PWRRUN cushioning. This cushioning is added to the insole of the shoe. As I mentioned earlier, the thicker midsole foam offers a responsive and bouncy feel that can help propel you forward during your runs. Talk about that extra ‘boost’! The shoe's topsole is also made from Everun foam, which provides additional cushioning and energy return. With the PWRRUN foam cushioning and security, Melissa feels that it “can add an additional 10 kilometres to my runs.” There is also long-lasting comfort with this pair. It is worth noting that previous versions of Kinvaras are created so that runners can feel the ground more. This is one of the changes that the Kinvara 14 faces. With more cushioning, runners experience a super smooth ride. I can tell the pair is designed for speedwork but it can handle easy paces equally well thanks to its stability. The smooth ride is also due to Its lack of outsole rubber. A Shoe For ‘Leg Day’? “If you want leg muscles, you should definitely consider this shoe!” says Melissa. The shoe makes my leg work a little bit harder because there is no plate to stiffen the midsole of the shoe. Without a plate, the ride will also feel more natural. This contributes to the shoe being lightweight but your foot has to do most of the work during transitions. Although you may not get as much speed assistance from Kinvara 14 as compared to a plated shoe, you definitely get to train your legs in the process. I see that as a win! As for the traction on the Kinvara 14 , the durable rubber features a unique tread pattern for a variety of surfaces. I find the grip of the shoe to be sufficient but due to its small ridges on the outsole, it may not be suitable for rougher terrains like the ones at Macritchie Reservoir. However, I also find it easy to wash the mesh if you get dirt or mud on the shoe after running on different terrains. Final Thoughts And Ratings Overall, the Saucony Kinvara 14 is an amazing option if you’re looking for a lightweight speed trainer. • ASICS NOVABLAST™ 4 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 18]

ASICS athlete and NUS Track and Field almuni Shohib Marican discusses the newest features of the ASICS NOVABLAST™ 4 with host John Yeong in our latest episode of "Sole Mates"  "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. In episode 18 of "Sole Mates", SportPlus.sg  teams up with Shohib Marican to discuss the latest drop from ASICS to find out if the eagerly anticipated  NOVABLAST™ 4 is all it's hyped out to be, and whether they could be a runner's perfect Sole Mate! The NOVABLAST™ 3 is a hugely popular shoe and has developed a cult-like following over time, being ranked as one of the top 2 trainers of 2023. There is certainly a lot to live up to after its success and the latest addition to the NOVABLAST™ family features a few notable upgrades to the shoe that promises to improve your running experience even further. Renowned for being lighter and highly cushioned, the NOVABLAST™ 4 sees an increase in the shoe's stack height. With a stack height of 41.5mm in the rearfoot and 33.5mm in the forefoot, the shoe has an overall offset of 8mm. Just for comparison, the NOVABLAST™ 3  also has an 8mm drop, with its stack height measuring 31 mm and 23 mm respectively.  The NOVABLAST™ 4  features a new midsole and outsole geometry that helps to produce a more energised ride. Another prominent change in the shoe is the construction of the upper that offers more stretch, ventilation, and durability. The above mentioned increase in stack height can be attributed to the shoe’s FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO  cushioning. This material helps to create softer landings and a more energised toe-off during your training, sticking true to the core of the NOVABLAST™  series. ASICS athlete Shohib shares with SportPlus.sg three key features of the new NOVABLAST™ 4 design and how they could play a part in improving your runs. Just how exactly do these features translate into better running performance? FF Blast Plus Eco foam First on the list is ASICS’ new FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO foam, which gives runners the same signature NOVABLAST™ bounce and responsiveness. The NOVABLAST™ series has always been synonymous with bounciness, further supported with the increased stack height. This makes it less harsh on the legs, with the Blast Plus Eco foam absorbing a bulk of the impact whenever your foot touches the ground.  As consumers, we also need to be mindful of the impacts our purchases have on the environment. That is why ASICS’ FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO foam consists of at least 20 % of bio-based material from renewable sources, including leftover waste from sugar cane processing. “The midsole feels a little bit more stable, which would be better for majority of runners,” says Shobib.  Having a shoe that is very bouncy and responsive can be a double-edged sword. Runners may tend to slow down or be overly cautious if their shoe is too bouncy. This is not the case for the NOVABLAST™ 4 , because it retains the bounciness it had in the NOVABLAST™ 3 but the foam also provides runners with more stability during their runs.  'Trampoline-inspired' Outsole The NOVABLAST™ 4 is also equipped with an AHAR™ LO outsole, which stands for ASICS High Abrasion Rubber to give runners that additional grip. The NOVABLAST™ 4 features a trampoline-inspired design for maximum bounce as well. Shohib adds, “In terms of grip? Zero, zero complaints!”  The grippiness of the shoe allows runners to run on a variety of terrain without worrying about grip. This also includes runs in wet-weather conditions where surfaces can get slippery. The outsole has been enhanced with additional grip, allowing it to tackle a wider variety of surfaces. While not a significant change, this modification aids in overall compression on the lateral side, especially beneficial for heel strikers.   The shoe delivers well in terms of catering to a wider range of users. Having practical features that make the running experience more enjoyable definitely adds value to the shoe. The groove underneath the shoe is slightly deeper than the NOVABLAST™ 3 , with its purpose of assisting in cushioning and responsiveness as well. Engineered Woven Upper The NOVABLAST™ 3's engineered mesh upper has been replaced with an engineered woven upper. Now, the upper features an upgraded stretch gusseted tongue construction for enhanced breathability and flexibility.  “It wraps around your foot a lot more easily” says John, referring to the new upper of the shoe. A thin, winged tongue lies flat on your foot to ensure a secure fit, and it incorporates a slightly more padded design. This tongue wing construction in the upper improves the fit while reducing tongue movement. Shohib notices that the NOVABLAST™ 4 is a little stretchier, hugs foot more easily and comfortably, regardless of wide or narrow foot. Hence, catering to more types of runners. Having owned previous iterations of the NOVABLAST™ , Shohib says he could feel the difference in ASICS’ latest version of the NOVABLAST™ series. Feeling more bounciness, more plushiness in the heel counter and even more padding in this part of the shoe. The tapered out heel design of the shoe offers users a ‘snug fit’ while allowing runners' achilles some breathing room. Not only that, it is also easy to slip into these shoes thanks to the convenience of the pull-tab on the back of the heel. Shohib's Personal Running Experience “Yesterday I did pretty long reps at a 10 km pace on a rainy track, and this shoe performed admirably! Beyond that, I like the upper. So the upper I think is one of the main differences between the NOVABLAST™ 3 and NOVABLAST™ 4 , a bit more comfortable because of the plush heel-tab. I also think talking about Singapore’s humid weather, the shoe also dissipates heat better,” explains Shohib. “I would not take the pair out for a race but I think for a daily trainer for a few up tempo workouts, this does very well. If you want a shoe that can do it all when you’re overseas, I would definitely recommend this. Easy runs? Check. Long runs? Check. Even throwing in a few workouts, I think this is a good option for anyone.” says Shohib, referring to the different purposes of the NOVABLAST™ 4 . “My current mileage in this shoe is around 40 to 50 km. So far it looks pretty good, I expect to bring this pair along for maybe 500 or 600 km. The NOVABLAST™ 3 did bring me along for a long way and I don’t see why this shouldn’t follow suit.”  Host John asked: “If you were the designer of this shoe, what would be one thing you would improve about this pair?”  “I would be nitpicking here but I personally always like very, very light shoes. My feet are used to very lightweight shoes. Although the NOVABLAST™ is a very good lightweight trainer, I hope ASICS can shave off a few ounces here and there for future iterations.” Simply put, the ASICS NOVABLAST™ 4 is the jack of all trades. I would really recommend this to anyone who needs a shoe that can do it all. Even other ASICS running shoes like the GEL-KAYANO™ or GEL-NIMBUS™ series have their own strengths, but the NOVABLAST™ is the one that you can trust to do most of it at a really high level. The ASICS NOVABLAST™ 4 essentially provides a plush fit with its engineered upper, energised cushioning with its FF BLAST PLUS ECO foam as well as a grippy outsole that generates maximum bounce.   Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating: Comfort - 4.5/5  Stability - 3.5/5 Responsiveness - 4/5 Grippiness - 5/5 Value for Money - 4.5/5 Taking all this into consideration I would give the ASICS NOVABLAST™ 4 an overall rating of 4.2 Soles, and would recommend people to use it as their daily trainer for various purposes such as easy runs, long runs and even for workouts. You can purchase the ASICS NOVABLAST™ 4 which will be going for S$209 and you can purchase them from ASICS.com  or any of ASICS’ retailers.  #ASICS #NOVABLAST4

  • Saucony Triumph 21 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 17]

Group fitness instructor and co-founder of Superhero Runners Nelson Wong returns to our shoe review series to share his thoughts with us about the Saucony Triumph 21 "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. In episode 17 of "Sole Mates", SportPlus.sg has teamed up with iRun Singapore , premier running store and Nelson Wong, to discuss the Saucony Triumph 21 and to find out if these shoes are worth of being perfect Sole Mates! Saucony’s latest iteration of the Triumph series, the Saucony Triumph 21 , looks to provide maximum comfort even as runners aim to deliver their high-performance runs. The latest pair maintains the same features that already made the Triumph 20 a great shoe. In essence, the soft and light PWRRUN+ midsole cushioning as well as the grippy outsole features of the Triumph 20 were kept in Triumph 21 . Saucony fans can again expect a dynamic and secure fit in this pair of shoes. But what exactly has changed then? The newly revamped upper is the Triumph 21’s most significant change. With the inclusion of a full inner sleeve, the Triumph 21 has a complete sleeve that begins where the heel lining ends, and goes all the way to the front. This is in comparison to the partial gusset found in the previous version. Is it finally time to cop your your first pair of Saucony’s Triumph series? Is it worth the upgrade for previous owners? Find out for yourself by checking out the video below as both Nelson Wong and host John Yeong discuss what’s new in the Triumph 21 ! Featuring a stack height of 37mm in the rearfoot and 27mm in the forefoot, the shoe has an overall offset of 10mm. The Saucony Triumph 21 is also available in both wide and regular versions for men's and women's categories, with the pair featured in the video above in a concrete-black colourway with hints of orange in its design. “Fresh out of the box, I love how easy it is to tie the shoe. When I put it on, it almost feels effortless! I liked how the tongue fits around my leg,” says Nelson, regarding his first impressions of the shoe. In this episode of "Sole Mates", Nelson also shares with us his three key features of the Triumph 21, followed by his own personal running experience. This can help runners like you, regardless of your level of running experience, decide whether this shoe is the right fit for your next run! Revamped Upper A new flat-knit upper that Saucony incorporated into its latest model that feels plush and luxurious. The upper is built with a perforated engineered mesh for breathability which also includes a full inner sleeve. In Singapore’s hot climate, you should definitely consider breathability as a factor especially if you intend to take the pair for longer runs. There is also a new lacing system for added comfort and a secure midfoot lockdown. As mentioned, the Saucony Triumph 21 has a complete sleeve that begins where the heel lining ends, and goes all the way to the front. This effectively makes the Triumph 21’s upper more padded and layered, as opposed to the single mesh design of the 20. Providing a plush feel, the double-layering contributes to the shoe’s durability as well. “Even though it’s plush, you don’t feel like it is too heavily in place and it is not obstructing the whole shoe,” adds Nelson, referring to the tongue of the shoe. Saucony has also relocated the pull tab towards the rear, which makes it very easy for runners to put on the shoe! PWRRUN+ TPU Foam Midsole Lightweight, cushioned and bouncy! Establishing itself as one of the lightest premium daily trainers weighing just under 280g, the Triumph 21 is a great shoe for to clock those kilometres. Similar to previous editions, Saucony’s incorporates the same PWRRUN+ foam. For those who may not know, PWRRUN+ foam is a type of expanded Polyurethane foam found in the midsole of the shoe and is akin to the foam found in Adidas’ Boost series for example. “I think the midsole is decent for a neutral runner. I don't feel like too much material is being put in here,” says Nelson. A thick PWRRUN+ insole adds more cushioning on top. A thin fabric covering the main midsole with hollow sections due to the mould inside the midsole that reduces the weight and increases the cushioning of the shoe. Another reason why PWRRUN+ technology is used is because it also highly resistant to cushioning loss, contributing to the shoe’s durability. This is also one of the features found in the Triumph 20 that Saucony incorporated to ensure that its latest version is still lightweight and cushioned! Durable Outsole There is a decent amount of rubber and the positioning of the rubber is at the right space. The outsole bends and transitions into the midsole without any stiffness. This can help slow down wear and tear as well. “There's a cavity in the heel area where it actually sinks in. It is supposed to assist you with the cushioning in your rearfoot landings. Particularly if your a heel striker, this is suppose to minimise the impact on your joints” explains John The shoe delivers an excellent balance of ride comfort, support, and transition-friendly responsiveness. The car tyre-like design helps with the grippiness of the shoe especially during wet weather runs. Nelson says, “Running on a wet surface, you won’t have any problem!” My Personal Running Experience “Comfort-wise, it is awesome for a daily trainer. I like how responsive it is and I feel the bounciness with each step that I take. I also like the upper, as it won't slide too much and also the toe box is just nice as I do not feel any discomfort and there were no blisters caused.” explains Nelson, after taking the pair for runs. Host John Yeong asked: “If you were the designer of this shoe, what would be one thing you would change about this pair?” “Maybe add a plate next time. One thing I want to highlight as well is that there are zero heel slippage issues. With the lacing, usually I would have to do a runner’s knot to prevent the heel from slipping. This pair, however, fits perfectly with a regular tie.” Ultimately, this shoe is most suited for runners who want to go for 8-10km running distance, and also for longer runs. It is a true daily trainer good for mid foot or heel foot strikers due to the stack height and the overall drop of 10mm. The high stack height offers more comfort during long runs, and its semi-rocker shape provides good responsiveness in its transition. The Saucony Triumph 21 acknowledges its successes in its predecessor, while making specific upgrades that make the latest version worth considering. The PWRRUN+ midsole is cushioned, lightweight and the durable outsole grips well on most running surfaces. I hope my sharing has given you a better insight into the shoe and help you understand its features better! Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating: Comfort - 4/5 Stability - 3.5/5 Responsiveness - 4.5/5 Grippiness - 4.5/5 Value for Money - 4/5 Taking all this into consideration I would give the Saucony Triumph 21 an overall rating of 4.1 Soles, and would recommend people to use it as their neutral daily trainer for slower yet longer runs due to grippiness and comfort. You can purchase the Saucony Triumph 21 which will be going for S$239 and you can purchase them from any IRUN store or online at irunsg.com . #Saucony #SauconySG #Triumph21

  • New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 16]

Running enthusiast and content creator Chermaine Zhou returns and shares her insights on the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer 2, with host John Yeong in the latest episode of "Sole Mates" "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. In episode 16 of "Sole Mates", SportPlus.sg has teamed up with iRun Singapore , premier running store and Chermaine Zhou, to find out if these shoes are your perfect Sole Mate! Featuring New Balance’s latest edition of the SuperComp Trainer series, the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 ensures runners can benefit from the shoe's energy-return technology or use the pair as a high-mileage training shoe. Incorporating new Energy Arc technology, an arched carbon fibre plate, two layers of FuelCell cushioning, just how do these features impact one’s performance? Furthermore, the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 has a slightly lower stack height. The shoe’s stack height of 40mm in the heel and 34mm in the forefoot leads to an overall drop of 6mm. This is 2mm shorter than the stack height in the SuperComp v1, which measured 47mm in the heel and 39mm in the forefoot. Now let’s check out the video below as both Chermaine Zhou and host John Yeong discuss various features of New Balance latest road-running shoes! Previously, Chermaine was training for a half-marathon in Gold Coast and has managed to attain a personal best during the event. Currently training for another half-marathon, Chermaine is excited to see how the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 can aid her in her training. Chermaine benefits from the ‘high roller’ effect that the shoe provides due to the rocker-like shape of the shoe. As a heel foot striker, Chermaine feels that the forefoot helps to push off when running, giving runners a good toe-off to increase their running speed. “I really love the colourway, I think this is my first pair with such a bright orange!” adds Chermaine, regarding her first impressions of the shoe. In this episode of "Sole Mates", Chermaine shares with us three key features of the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 , followed by her own personal running experience after clocking mileage with the pair. This can help runners like you, decide whether this shoe is the right fit for your next run! Lighter FuelCell Formula The FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 's midsole has been designed with a new formulation of FuelCell technology. The midsole of the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 is lighter and less dense than the previous version. This is where the majority of the weight loss comes from. This also complements the overall shape of the shoe that delivers a propulsive feel to help drive you forward. “Weight is really important for the type of run you are going to wear it for. If you are going for a faster run, you would definitely want a lighter shoe and one that propels you forward.” adds Chermaine. New Balance has shortened the stack height of the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 despite the previous version of the SuperComp Trainer being widely received by many. I believe that this shoe would cater better for faster runs due to its lightweight material. Shoes with very good stability generally have slightly more weight in them. However, the light weight of the shoe also will also help the shoe deliver its propulsive feel for runners. New Engineered Mesh Upper The mesh upper in the previous version had a sock-like fitting. From a thinly-padded internal rear cushion pillows with a high heel counter and a single material stretch knitted tongue, the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 has gone through a redesign. The pair now features a more traditional tongue as it has a lower, more conventional rear-padded collar and a thin conventional tongue with gusset. There is additional padding and structure around the heel and collar along with a more traditional gusseted tongue. This in turn gives users a breathable, flat knit upper with lock-in fit feeling. “I felt that it is actually so breathable that you can see the colour of my socks!” adds Chermaine, regarding the newly-engineered upper. If you’re someone who prefers a more locked-down feel for your feet when running, this could be the pair for you! Energy Arc Technology Featuring a new Energy Arc technology, an arched carbon fibre plate is incorporated into the midsole of the shoe. This plate is sandwiched between two layers of FuelCell foam cushioning, which is a higher end foam technology for New Balance. Thus, the foam leaves a hollow channel through the middle of the shoe. Just how does this technology translate to better performance for runners? “The plate is clearly visible, so it actually flattens when it’s in a resting state. But when you’re actually running, the plate bends and then pushes off” explains John. The plate is flattened into the void with each foot strike. As it reshapes, energy is returned, creating a high rebound sense of propulsion. One thing to take note is that the midsole feels a touch firmer but it still retains its trademark energy and spring which provides good impact absorption and bounce. This can be especially beneficial for training involving dynamic movements and quick transitions. My Personal Running Experience “When I first tried it on, I actually took the pair on a long run. During the long run, when I was trying to pick up speed, it was a very, very smooth energy transition! I could feel the energy return when I was picking up from a 6-minute pace to a 5-minute pace. The energy return was really well-received”. “Due to the high cushion stack, I do think the stability is probably lacking as compared to more stable pairs of shoes. But I do think that it’s something that I am okay with, because of the high stack. I do prefer that max-cushion effect as well as the bounciness when I run.” Host John Yeong questions whether Chermaine has any improvements for future iterations of the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 . “Probably would be the upper toe box area. I did feel that after the 21km run, it was a little bit tight. For me personally I would prefer the toe box area to be slightly wider.” Perhaps this is one aspect of the shoe New Balance can consider improving on for future versions and to possibly cater to an even wider range of runners. Final Thoughts and Ratings Ultimately, the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 is a very good pair if you need that one go-to pair for various kinds of runs. Be it long runs, tempo runs or hill runs, this pair would be suitable. Moreover, if you are looking to try a carbon-plated shoe i would definitely recommend this shoe regardless whether you are an entry-level or seasoned runner. I like the responsiveness of the shoe especially because of the carbon plate. It is quite rare to have a full carbon plate in a trainer shoe as well. Due to this feature, it really gives the energy return especially for long runs. While not perfect, the shoe still has newly improved features that can improve the running experience for users. Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating: Comfort - 4/5 Stability - 3.5/5 Responsiveness - 4/5 Grippiness - 3.5/5 Value for Money - 4/5 Taking all this into consideration I would give the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 an overall rating of 3.8 Soles. You can purchase the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 which will be going for S$299 and you can purchase them from any IRUN store or online at irunsg.com . #NewBalance #FuelCellSuperComp2

  • Nike InfinityRN4 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 15]

Singapore masters runner Paul Martin is back again as our guest athlete in this week's running shoes review series "Sole Mates", as host John Yeong discusses with the Elevate Performance Coaching runner about Nike's new daily trainer the InfinityRN 4 "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. In episode 15 of "Sole Mates", SportPlus.sg has teamed up with iRun Singapore , premier running store and masters athlete Paul Martin, to find out if these shoes are your perfect Sole Mate! Previously known as the Infinity Run in earlier editions, the latest Nike InfinityRN 4 road running shoes is a pair of daily trainers that provide a plush and smooth ride. The Nike InfinityRN 4 features a new take on the familiar InfinityRN series because it is made from an all-new Nike ReactX foam. It is the first time this technology is being used for this line of shoes. Not only that, the updated Flyknit upper and wider toe box helps runners by offering a more stable and secure feel compared to earlier editions. The shoe has a stack height of 39mm in the rearfoot, and 30mm in the forefoot, thus giving an overall offset of 9mm. With supportive cushioning built for a smooth run, the Nike InfinityRN 4 features a new take on the familiar InfinityRN series with its updated features. Check out the video below as both athlete Paul Martin and host John Yeong discuss various features of Nike latest road-running shoes. One factor that must be taken into consideration and mentioned is that the InfinityRN 4 shoes do weigh a bit more. For example, a size US 9 weighs as 353g, 28g more than its predecessor, the Infinity Run 3. “I’ve had heavier shoes. It is light enough to go as a daily trainer, not meant to be a racer shoe. It is meant to be a daily wear shoe, a recovery shoe, a long-mile shoe,” says Paul about the InfinityRN 4 . Although the InfinityRN4 is not a stability shoe, it does carry a lot of stability features. It is also wider in the midfoot area and is updated with a more durable outsole. Such features are key aspects of what runners look for in a running shoe. Paul says, “Look good, feel good, run good!” when describing his first impressions of the pair. The aesthetics of the InfinityRN4 can make it even more appealing to runners like Paul, who enjoys matching his sneakers to his outfit. The pair comes in five colourways, with the white and platinum tint colourway being the one featured in this video of the Sole Mates series on SportPlus.sg. Flyknit Upper The InfinityRN4’s upper is designed to be breathable and flexible. It is made with Nike Running’s Flyknit. The shoe’s tongue is designed to be adjustable and plush so that you can easily kickstart your runs confidently knowing that there is support and breathability in the upper. Unlike the first version of the Infinity, which had an almost sock-like upper, the Infinity Run 4’s upper is a lot thicker and more sturdy. Foam collar is soft and supportive to the touch which are plus-points for the user. Paul says, “So easy to get in and out of the shoe!” The Flyknit upper provides a ‘snug fit’, hugging the foot and keeping it in place. Due to this, Nike recommends you to size up by half a size if you are looking to purchase this shoe. It is easy to slip in and out of the shoe because of its ‘plush’ feel as well. The newly added lines in the design at the front of the shoe serves a practical purpose. It is supposed to help repel water in the event of rainy weather. In Singapore’s climate, you also will tend to sweat a lot, possibly leading to water build-up in the shoe. The Flyknit also has a water repellent liner in the toe area that provides protection in wet weather conditions. ReactX Midsole Foam Working our way down to the midsole of the InfinityRN4, we are greeted with Nike's ReactX technology. In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, Nike has reduced its carbon footprint by 43% compared to the Nike React foam used in the Infinity Run 3. According to Nike, the new ReactX foam also gives you 13% more energy return compared with its previous Nike React foam. Paul notes that his legs feel less laboured due to the shoe’s energy return. This definitely benefits runners who aim to bring the most out of their daily trainers to achieve greater results. The InfinityRN4 still maintains the same rocker geometry that is seen in past versions but with a slightly squishier underfoot than the Nike React midsole foam. ReactX foam helps to soften impact as your feet hit the ground. You can expect softer and more comfortable running experiences thanks to the cushioning in the underfoot. Durable Outsole You may wonder, Just how important a role does the outsole of a shoe play? Can a durable outsole benefit users during their runs? The InfinityRN4 proves just that with its waffle-patterned outsole that provides better traction for the user. There is also increased rubber at the outsole to contribute to its durability. Not only that, the water-repellent liner in the toe area provides protection in wet weather conditions. “Not meant for midfoot or forefoot strikers, it’s meant for heel strikers.” says Paul, referring to the natural toe-off that the shoe provides for the user. Featuring a wider base than the Infinity Run 3, it has a curved outsole that helps your foot rock smoothly from heel to toe. With every stride, it makes every step feel more natural and adds efficiency to your run, helping you waste less energy as you hit your stride. These features of the shoe are helpful especially as I am using the pair as a daily trainer. I would expect durability in a shoe that I am using for different kinds of runs and I believe the InfinityRN4 delivers that. Now that I’ve run through various features of the shoe, let me share some of my own personal experience after clocking mileage with this pair of daily trainers! My Personal Running Experience “I’ve had more than 50km in this shoe, long runs, 5km runs, social runs, half marathons, they all feel good at the start when I put it on, really just go at any time! I love the grip of the shoe, suitable for wet conditions as well because the grip is very good for many roads." He added: "Although not a trail shoe, the shoe can be used for trails. Pretty good for running uphill and downhill, because it doesn't give you slippage. When you make ground contact, you don’t feel like falling down.” Host John Yeong questioned whether the upper of the InfinityRN4 makes the shoe less stable, to which Paul replied. “I usually wear very thick socks, it really hugs my feet because I always buy shoes true to size. There is no slippage whatsoever running across various speeds; cornering, going up and down slopes. Although I love the Flyknit on this particular shoe, I feel that they can make it a little thinner because in this climate in Singapore, you tend to sweat a lot.” Perhaps this is one aspect of the shoe Nike can consider improving on for future versions. Final Thoughts and Ratings All in all, the Nike Infinity RN4 caters to both new and seasoned runners as it provides good support as a daily trainer. The pair may not have all the fancy new technology infused into the shoe, but this may not be a bad thing. It has practical features for a daily trainer that still benefit users such as the increased traction in the outsole. Other features such as the ReactX midsole and the Flyknit upper also allow the shoe to provide a good running experience as a daily trainer. Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4.5/5 Stability : 4/5 Responsiveness : 4.5/5 Grippiness : 4.5/5 Value for Money : 3.5/5 Taking all this into consideration I would give the Nike InfinityRN4 an overall rating of 4.2 Soles, and would recommend people to use it for easy or recovery runs. You can purchase the InfinityRN4 which will be going for S$249 and you can purchase them from any IRUN store or online at irunsg.com . #Nike #InfinityRN4

  • adidas Switch FWD Review: Sole Mates [Episode 14]

Captain of adidas Runners Singapore and co-founder of The High Panters running group Eugene Lim shares his thoughts on adidas' latest daily trainer, the adidas Switch FWD, with host John Yeong in the latest episode of "Sole Mates" "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. Last week, adidas Singapore announced the release of its latest daily trainer, the adidas Switch FWD , aimed at helping runners of all levels, from daily running enthusiasts to elites, elevate their running experience. The shoe on first impression definitely looks like a max-cushioned category shoe, with a creatively designed cuts on the outsole of the shoe that expose its full-length TPU plate, what we are now seeing as an increasing trend among high end daily trainers across running footwear from different brands. The latest road running pair is designed for a smooth ride with unique features that provide runners with an all-new running experience. One such feature of the adidas Switch FWD is the soft EVA compound midsole. The EVA compound technology is incorporated in the midsole together with intricately designed voids, helping in its design to convert gravity into forward motion. Watch the video below as both Eugene Lim and host John Yeong instrospect and discuss various aspects of adidas’ latest running kicks. Weighing around 335g, the adidas Switch FWD is built with a regular fit and lace closure. The pair’s stability is credited with its TPU stability plate in the midsole. With a height of 45mm in the heel foot and 35mm in the forefoot, the shoe has an offset / overall midsole drop of 10mm, which is a fairly standard drop for a running shoe. The adidas Switch FWD is also known for its Continental Rubber outsole and it comes in 3 different colourways. Engineered with a 3D moulded heel with anti-slip lining, runners can expect to experience a cushioned, locked-down feel during their runs. Apart from all this, the shoe is also environmentally-friendly as its upper even contains a minimum of 50% recycled content, consistent with many of adidas' products in recent years. In this episode of "Sole Mates", Eugene Lim shares with us three key features of the adidas Switch FWD after personally taking the pair for runs. By sharing his experience, it can help you potentially decide whether this shoe is potentially their next go-to daily trainers for their runs! EVA Compound Midsole and TPU Plate Definitely one of the main stand-out features of the adidas Switch FWD . The shoe has flexible midsoles with oval-shaped cavities which are definitely an eye-catching look for runners. The voids in the midsole structure are engineered to compress and expand under pressure. These voids feature throughout the midsole and provide a rocking motion by turning downward pressure into forward motion. PHOTO: EUGENE LIM, SPORTPLUS.SG “It was a very interesting and different feeling” says Eugene, referring to the rocking feeling of the adidas Switch FWD . The voids feature throughout the midsole goes well with the TPU plate and provided increased stability overall. As a result, runners can expect stable and cushioned transitions from the midfoot to forefoot as they toe-off. "This is also the first time I can see the plate of the shoe as well! I believe adidas had made the right choice in terms of balancing comfort and stability in the midsole foam," added host John. Breathable Upper The adidas Switch FWD features an engineered mesh upper with breathability windows which aims to provide an extra supportive and snug fit. Furthermore, the strategically placed mesh windows are incorporated on the forefoot and midfoot of the silhouette for ultimate breathability. “Very, very, padded!” Eugene adds, referring to the tongue of the Switch FWD . Although the tongue of the shoe is not fully gusseted, the added comfort mainly comes from a breathable mesh upper. The ‘windows’ on the mesh are partially see-through that contributes to the breathability of the shoe. This is to prevent hot spots which I may get from other pairs of running shoes especially after longer runs. "Overall, I feel that the comfort and locked-down feel are important positive features of the shoe for you to consider about the Switch FWD !" said Eugene. Continental Rubber Outsole Focusing on durability and grippiness, the Continental outsole of the Switch FWD certainly features a high-performance compound for optimised grip in all conditions. adidas’ collaboration with continental rubber is seen with many adidas shoes over the years to provide runners with grip and durability. The enhanced grip is further complemented by its lightweight outsole. Eugene says, “Grippier than other Continental soles that I’m used to.” Host John Yeong attributes the lightweight outsole to the cut-outs found in the outsole of the Switch FWD which have taken some of the weight of the shoe. This unique design of the revolutionary pair serves purpose while complementing other features of the shoe as well. Eugene's Personal Running Experience "I have started running since I was in school as a way to keep fit. Started running in school Always used running as a way to keep fit and have tried many different pairs of running shoes over the years. I really like the bounciness and forward-rocking motion the shoe provides me. The responsiveness and grippiness of the Switch FWD are my two biggest plus-points of the shoe on top of the other features." "Although I have not taken it on long distance runs yet, I really believe this pair can easily take me on runs up to 10KM. As a midfoot striker, I could feel the energy return which definitely helps me during my runs. However, if I could change one aspect of the shoe, I would change the toebox to make it wider. Perhaps, adidas can consider this for future reiterations of the shoe." Final Thoughts and Overall Rating The adidas Switch FWD definitely delivers in providing a unique and seamless running experience like never before. The EVA midsole structure with purpose-built voids is a step forward for adidas in terms of incorporating new technology into its running shoes. I would be keen to see with more mileage how the shoe changes over time as a daily trainer. I would recommend this pair as a daily multi-purpose trainer as it is an all-rounded pair with great features. Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4/5 Stability : 3.5/5 Responsiveness : 5/5 Grippiness : 5/5 Value for Money : 3.5/5 Thus, leading to an overall rating of 4.2 Soles for the adidas Switch FWD . The adidas Switch FWD is retailing for S$219 and can be purchased at any adidas Store, via the adidas app, and select retailers. #adidassg #SwitchFWD
