- What Makes HYROX So Popular in Singapore?
Eight stations with one-kilometre sprints in between. From the sounds of it, HYROX is one of the toughest fitness racing out there, so what makes it so popular? PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG It’s been a year since HYROX made its debut in Singapore. After making waves in Europe, HYROX’s ethos on functional body movement workouts used in everyday life has attracted people of varying body types and levels of fitness to participate, highlighting the event’s surging appeal. HYROX first started in 2017 in Germany, initially pulling 650 participants to the event. Today, that number is significantly larger, with over 120,000 participants across 17 countries taking part in the event each year. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG So, what’s driving this surge in popularity, even amongst those who don’t typically consider themselves sporty? Several factors have contributed to the event’s success. For one, HYROX mixes workout stations with running in a circuit format. This means that for the most part, these exercises can be trained for at a relatively low price. With minimal to no equipment requirements, the barrier of entry remains low. Additionally, participants are given the freedom to choose between competing in different categories. Someone attempting HYROX for the first time might be inclined to go solo as the weights they need to lift are less heavy than the one in the ‘Doubles’ category. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Conversely, one might be inclined to join the ‘Relay’ category, opting instead to train with a group for the event as opposed to alone. One can argue that the appeal of the event to even non-sporty people, stems from HYROX’s collaborative ‘Doubles’ and ‘Team Relay’ categories. The inclusion of these categories makes the event accessible to those who might not be inclined to participate in solo sports. Another factor is the crowd that the event serves. With running and body movement workouts being the main components of HYROX, the event attracts people from the running and gym-going crowd, some of the largest demographics in Singapore’s active population. The blending of the two serves to instill a unique twist to the event that participants can strive toward completing and feel a sense of achievement for. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Additionally, being the only event of its kind, HYROX fills a gap in the market that is largely underserved. You can even purchase tickets to be a spectator, cheering on your family members and friends. “Having spectators at the event also provides the catalyst that encourages those who never thought they might participate in something like HYROX to give it a shot seeing people of ages and fitness levels coming together to compete!” said Ria Chen , who participated in the Women's Singles and Relay categories in June , and will be representing Team100PLUS again to join the Women's Doubles in August with Erin Ong . PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG She pointed out, “HYROX has become more than just a race in the fitness scene. It’s become a community-driven activity. You see people coming together during the lead up of the race and training together in the gym.” The spin instructor added, “Regardless of fitness level, whether you’re taking part solo, with a partner or as a team, you’ll be able to spot someone training for HYROX in the gym just by the nature of what they’re doing! It’s quite comforting and motivating at the same time knowing that you’re all working towards the same goal.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Personally, I don’t consider myself the sporty type. The depth of meaningful exercise I participate in is limited to a weekly bouldering session and the occasional run or hike at our local Mt. Everest a.k.a. Bukit Timah Nature reserve. Years of neglect towards my personal fitness has meant that I struggle to run for more than 30 minutes at a time or even confidently pass an IPPT test." PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Despite that, the HYROX hype is one that's clearly enticed Ria, who loves the sense of achievement it comes with upon crossing the finish line. However, there is one aspect she loves most about the competition. "The sense of community and friendly competition that comes from training and competing in HYROX is rare, special, something that you don’t see in many sporting events," gushed Ria. The post-COVID world has welcomed a rise in self-improvement and fitness movements around the globe; this holds true for Singapore today. Being the first event of its kind to be held locally, HYROX sets an example for future competitors to follow and hopefully build on. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The event’s unique blend of several disciplines as well as its multi-categorical approach to participation and the element of spectatorship has undoubtedly made the HYROX a special, popular go-to event amongst Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans alike. Whether you have fitness goal you’d like to hit by the end of the year, you’re just interested in having a go at HYROX, wish to participate as a supporter, or you’re already a seasoned fitness junkie, there is something for you at HYROX. If you’d like to sign up, registration for HYROX is still open here . #HYROXSG #HYROXWorld
- What is a Hybrid Athlete, and which Athletic Disciplines would Excel Best at HYROX?
We compare athletes across different disciplines to debate on whether hybrid athletes, runners or cross-fitters are best built for fitness racing PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG HYROX Singapore is back again this weekend, happening at the Singapore EXPO from Saturday, 31 August to Sunday, 1 September and we can't help but wonder which category of athletes would excel best in fitness racing. To answer this question, it is important to know the distinct qualities each of these athletes possess and how they differ from one another. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Also, how does one define a hybrid athlete? A hybrid athlete is someone who combines elements from different athletic disciplines to excel in multiple areas of fitness. Unlike athletes who specialise in just one discipline or sport or type of training, hybrid athletes often integrate endurance, strength, speed, and agility into their regimen. For example, a hybrid athlete might blend elements of weightlifting, running, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to perform well in activities that require a broad range of physical capabilities. This approach allows them to be competitive in various types of events or physical challenges, from endurance races to strength competitions. To learn more about training for hybrid athletes, read this article here . The key characteristics of a hybrid athlete would include: Versatility : They develop a broad skill set that supports performance across different types of physical activities. Balance : They train multiple facets of fitness, such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. Adaptability : They can shift their focus and training strategies based on the demands of different sports or activities. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Knowing the Fundamental Differences between Hybrid athletes, Runners and CrossFit athletes It is also important to understand what HYROX requires in order for one to excel. HYROX typically includes a configuration of 1-kilometre runs followed by functional fitness challenges, such as sled pushes, rowing, wall balls, lunges - with a total of eight stations to complete, where participants are timed at the end upon completing all runs and stations. Given the nature of HYROX, hybrid athletes seem the most likely to excel in this event. To excel at HYROX an athlete requires endurance, strength and power. Hybrid athletes train for both endurance and strength, making them well-prepared for the diverse demands of HYROX. Apart from testing a participant’s general level of fitness, the event also tests a wide range of skills. Hybrid athletes are used to training across multiple disciplines, making them adaptable and versatile to the varied challenges HYROX presents. Additionally, many hybrid athletes participate in events like Spartan Races or triathlons, which also require a combination of strength, endurance, and mental toughness. This experience is directly transferable to HYROX. Runners on the other hand would excel in the running portions of HYROX. That’s not to say they would necessarily flounder or fail to excel when it comes to the strength-based functional fitness challenges, but they would definitely need to train for those types of movements beforehand. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG On the flip side, CrossFit athletes would likely perform well in the functional fitness challenges due to their strength and conditioning training. However, they might find the running segments more challenging, particularly if they don't regularly train for endurance running. The format of HYROX rewards a fitness routine that is well-rounded on all fronts. Hence, it is imperative that participants who want to excel in HYROX have a well-rounded fitness regimen that better supports the physical demand of HYROX. All three types of athletes can excel at HYROX, however, the odds of the hybrid athlete performing the best across the entire event are just more favourable. Hybrid athletes would be the natural favourites to excel due to their skillset, having already formed a firm foundation of both running and functional exercise with their training and experience. Ultimately, it all comes down to the individual to dictate what level of training is appropriate in any discipline in preparation for HYROX. Personally, I think that individuals should first define what excellence is to them. The word excellence is defined by Oxford to be “the definition of being outstanding or good.” But who decides what is good or outstanding? The individual who’s participating of course! HYROX is before anything else a timed fitness event, and whilst there isn’t a time limit, a factor in pushing participants to try harder is the prospect of finishing the course as quickly as possible. This metric of measurement serves as good way of measuring your overall physical condition, documenting self-improvement, engaging in a fun and social fitness experience, etc. For instance, a participant can take part in HYROX annually and be happy with beating a timing they had set a year prior. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG This metric of measurement welcomes healthy competition. It’s important to remember that some healthy competition is fun and good but it’s important to not get carried away with ego and getting upset that your timing beaten by others; comparing yourself to others might lead to unhealthy training habits like ego-lifting and overtraining, both seriously increasing your risk of injuring yourself. It also, more than anything, sucks the fun out of HYROX completely. Remember: “Comparison is the thief of joy. If all you’re doing is comparing yourself to someone else, you’ll never be happy.” – Unknown. Happy training! #HYROXSG #HYROXWorld #HybridAthlete
- In Pictures: Over 6,000 Participants Conquer HYROX at Singapore EXPO
Held at Singapore Expo as part of Fitness and Wellness Asia, the second HYROX Singapore this year rode on the success of June's edition with over 6,000 participants PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG 2 SEPTEMBER 2024, SINGAPORE - In June, Singapore held the biggest single day HYROX race in history and despite the sheer toll the fitness race takes on the body, it left people wanting more. And that's what they got. The past weekend saw Singapore's third ever HYROX event. This time, instead of the Singapore National Stadium, it was held at halls three and four of Singapore Expo as part of the Fitness and Wellness Expo (FWE) Asia. Over 6,000 participants took part in the race which consisted of 12 different categories in the pro, open, doubles and relay disciplines. PHOTO: KELVIN OOI, SPORTPLUS.SG With some having competed at the June edition at the National Stadium, there were a few differences noted by the participants. Melissa Foo , who competed in the mixed doubles on Sunday said "It was much more cooling but here (Singapore Expo), it was was more crowded and some areas got congested like at the spectator crossing. Overall though, it was still very fun and I look forward to participating again. Team Singapore triathlete, Yong Man Yun , who was set to compete but had to pull out due to injury, came down nonetheless to support the participants and was immediately drawn in by the atmosphere. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "I didn't expect this atmosphere at all, there was a jam coming in! I see a lot of supporters. People who may not be into the sport are down here to support their friends and I think that's great," gushed Man Yun. Members o f Team100PLUS were also amongst the competitors, with Ria Chen finishing on the podium in her relay event on day 2. Told in pictures, here are some highlights of the second HYROX weekend this year. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Hybrid athlete, Kenneth Seet missed out on a spot on the podium on day 1 by a mere second. Competing in the men's open in the 30-34 age group, the Team100PLUS athlete blazed through the circuit before ultimately struggling at the final wall balls station. With 20-30 no counts, he eventually finished the race with an impressive timing of just under an hour ten minutes. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG A women's open participant focused on her form and determination to complete the sled pull. The third out of eight stations, the weight of which the participant must pull depends on the category they compete in. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG One of the many interesting parts of HYROX is seeing the outfits of doubles and relay participants. With some going the down the usual route of matching coloured tops of shoes, this pair went the extra mile and it's safe to say it put a smile on the faces of some spectators. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Founder of Fire City Singapore , Samuel Lim took part in the Men's Doubles Pro with fellow Fire City member, Sylvester Tan . The pair came in at 1:20:06. "We’re stoked with our performance—smooth sailing from start to finish. There’s always room to improve, but we stuck to our goal and crushed those 8km runs and stations with efficiency and teamwork. Every strategy paid off!" said Samuel on his socials after the race. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Former Team Singapore fin swimmer and water polo player, Lim Yao Xiang conquered the fitness race on both days. After finishing in the men's doubles on day 1, Yao Xiang competed in the mixed doubles with fiancé Lim Shi Hwee, who cheekily posed behind her soon-to-be husband while the latter started the race with the SkiErgs. The couple finished the race with a timing of 1:22:10. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The infamous wall balls. The finish line is just off to the side, in the peripheral view of all the participants with just one more obstacle to overcome. Depending on the category, competitors must complete between 75-100 wall balls. Watched closely by a judge stood next to them, all the wall balls must hit its target and everyone must do a proper squat. Then, and only then, can one run to the finish line in triumph. Team100PLUS' Erin Ong and Ria Chen competed in the women's doubles on day 1. The pajr completed the wall balls within an impressing 3 minutes 55 seconds, in the top 89.7% of the station. "It was our first time competing together, the experience was great fun. I was a little sick with a blocked nose so I tried my best but I'm really thankful for Ria who helped tank some of the stations," said Erin. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The aisles along each station were jam-packed with family and friends cheering on the HYROX participants. A huge part of the competition, the spectators are commonly credited for creating the community spirit HYROX possesses. Without them (and the hilarious signs), the fitness race would be near impossible to compete. It's the constant support and cheers that truly pushes the participants all the way to the finish. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG And it makes the participants smile too, despite all the pain and fatigue! PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG It's truly a NAPFA test on steroids. If you thought the eight stations were tough enough (which they are), a 1km run is required after every station, amounting to a total of 8km. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG A mixed doubles participant pulled her weight as she dominated the sled pull, a station that often traps competitors due to its difficulty. Participants must pull the sled for a total of 50m, with its weight once again depending on the category. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Team100PLUS athletes, Melissa Foo and Daniel Fang finished at 1:25:21 in the mixed doubles on day 2 While Melissa had previously taken part in the women's open in June, Daniel had competed in the men's doubles with Paul Martin. The duo decided to form a team this time round, two weeks before flying off the Australia for the Sydney Marathon. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Two mixed doubles pairs go toe-to-toe in the sled push, the second station of the entire circuit. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Being the only HYROX race in the Southeast Asian region, participants hailed from all over the area and the world. Many came from all parts of neighbouring Malaysia. It served as proof that community is the essence of the race, and that the atmosphere is created by people from all walks of life and backgrounds. #HYROXSG #HYROXAPAC #Team100PLUS

- Experience the Unique Combination of Speed and Bounce in the New NOVABLAST™ 5 Running Shoe
The NOVABLAST™ line gets a major update with a fast and fun model suitable for every type of runner PHOTO: ASICS SINGAPORE Singapore, 18 November 2024 - Today, ASICS announced the launch of the latest model in its increasingly popular bounce category, the NOVABLAST™ 5 running shoe. The highly anticipated update to the NOVABLAST™ line delivers a uniquely energized and comfortable running experience through a combination of lightweight materials and ASICS’ new midsole material. In line with the ASICS Design Philosophy, which ensures continuous improvements in each new product, the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe introduces key updates to the midsole foam, upper and tongue tooling and overall design elements. New Material Introduction Initially introduced last month on the GLIDERIDE™ MAX shoe, the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe will feature FF BLASTTM MAX foam cushioning, which helps increase the bounce properties by approximately 8.5% from the previous NOVABLAST™ model. Currently, the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe is the only shoe in the ASICS product range that utilizes a complete FF BLAST™ MAX technology midsole. PHOTO: ASICS SINGAPORE The upper of the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe has also been improved for comfort, now utilizing an Engineered Jacquard mesh that enhances breathability compared to the previous version's woven upper. Also taking inspiration from the SUPERBLAST™ footwear line, the tongue construction on the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe mirrors the same gusseted wing construction to help create a secure lockdown and instill confidence during workouts. Design Language The NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe retains its signature geometric midsole appearance, a standout feature since the product’s inception five years ago. The design lines are intended to create an illusion of dimensional warp as the runner or walker moves through their stride. “We approached the design and structure of the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe in a way that would allow the FF BLAST™ MAX to show its full potential for the consumer,” said Yosuke Atarashi, Senior Designer of Footwear at ASICS and lead designer of the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe. “Visually, we wanted the design to mimic the wearer’s dynamic experience and underfoot feeling as they run in this latest version of the NOVABLAST™ line.” The midsole and outsole construction of the NOVABLAST™ 5 shoe incorporates enhancements that build on the energetic, bouncy, and comfortable ride of its predecessor. The inclusion of a pod-like groove in the forefoot improves springy sensation, enabling runners to feel propelled forward with each step. The shoe will be available in Singapore on 1 December 2024, for S$219. #ASICSSG #ASICSRunning #NOVABLAST5
- Do lifting weights make girls bulky?: Fit Talk Podcast with Chermaine and JX [Ep 4 - part 1]
This week we debunk a common myth that women who gym are at a higher risk of becoming big and bulky. Lifting heavy weights are not only great for building strength, but it can help girls develop a lean, muscular body and develop a higher resting metabolic rate PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG In recent years, the landscape of sports and fitness has evolved significantly, with women taking centre stage in what was once a male-dominated arena. Podcasts have emerged as a powerful platform to amplify these voices, and to celebrate the achievement of women in sports, SportPlus.sg is pleased to provide a space for women to share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Lifting weights has long been linked with developing a muscular, bulky physique. But does this hold true for women? In the fourth episode of the "Fit Talk" podcast, SportPlus.sg hosts Haw Jiaxuan and Chermaine Zhou discuss with calisthenics and yoga instructor Erin Ong the common myth that lifting weights for girls would automatically make them have a higher risk of developing a bulky physique. This is in fact untrue, with weightlifting offering many benefits to women including enhanced strength, improved muscle tone, and better overall health. However, there are several factors to consider when it comes to the impact of weightlifting on a woman’s body. The idea that women will become overly muscular from weightlifting is a common misconception, says Erin. "I think this myth arises because when we think about bulky, we always picture men with very big muscles. Traditionally, men are the ones going to the gym and women don't usually work out at all but what I think is nowadays, it’s important for women to workout or to go for strength training because it helps to build lean muscle mass." PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG When asked by Jiaxuan why there is a negative connotation of women who have a muscular frame, Chermaine replied with another question: "Could this stem from the fear of looking bulky be because girls are afraid to look more masculine than their partners for some women?" Erin shares: "To be honest, I’m not very sure. I think it’s because we see men in the gym being very big. Maybe it’s people picturing women with big muscles, it doesn't look very feminine. When girls think, “if i look more masculine, I don't want to look like that in the gym.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Bulky in essence means you build muscle mass but in order to really bulk up, we actually need a lot of the testosterone hormone. That’s why it’s easier for guys to bulk up because they have a lot of testosterones in their body. For women, we will not bulk up as easily because we don't have that. We need a lot of protein and eat in caloric surplus to gain the extra bulk which means you need to eat more than what you expense," says Erin. "So if these two conditions aren't met, we won't get bulky. So actually women don't need to worry because even if we exercise and do strength training, because we don't have as much testosterone and we don't eat a lot of protein, we won't get very bulky." PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Hormonal Differences Women have much lower levels of testosterone than men, which is the hormone responsible for significant muscle growth. While weightlifting does help women build muscle, it doesn't lead to the large, bulky muscles that many people associate with bodybuilders. Going to the gym and lifting weights can also boost your self-confidence, help you cultivate a better relationship with your body, and even improve a woman's health. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Types of Weightlifting The type of weightlifting program a person follows determines the outcome. If a woman focuses on lifting heavier weights with fewer reps, she can build strength and muscle tone. If the focus is on higher reps with lighter weights, the result is more likely to be a lean, toned physique rather than bulk. Nutrition Nutrition also plays a huge role in determining how much one bulks. Building muscle requires a caloric surplus (eating more calories than you burn), along with proper protein intake. Most women who lift weights aren't consuming enough calories to get "bulky" unless they are intentionally following a program designed to build significant muscle mass. Erin explains: "It’s really because of our hormones and diet is very important too. If you’re not eating enough, no matter how much you work out, you can’t bulk up. That’s what happened to me because I started working out but realised I wasnt increasing weight. I wanted to increase muscle mass but when I measured my body composition, I realised that my muscle still stayed the same. I slowly learned it was because I didn’t eat enough protein." "Even now, as a strength trainer, I'm not too particular on my calorie count but everyday, I always make sure I eat enough protein. That’s the only thing I make sure of." PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Genetics is a factor Some women may have a genetic predisposition to gain muscle more easily, but this varies widely between individuals. Most women will see improvements in strength, muscle definition, and overall fitness, but not excessive bulk. In short, lifting weights is an excellent way for women to improve strength, boost metabolism, and increase muscle tone without becoming "bulky" unless that is their specific goal. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Functional Fitness If you're concerned about building excessive muscle, you can always tailor your workout to focus more on endurance or toning by seeking the help of certified fitness trainers from the industry to guide you on your fitness journey. "I think functional fitness started to come about to build better mobility because I think as we grow older and have kids, it’s important to make sure we can still move freely and do the things our kids do. Imagine we grow older and we can't keep up with the kids because we are not fit enough. Functional fitness like going to the gym and doing some arm work strength, you can still be healthy, fit and move pain-free as you grow older." "You don’t want to injure your back when you carry heavy luggage or you can’t even put up in the cabin. For some of us, we like hiking. So if you like hiking but you aren't fit enough, you won't be able to do it and experience what you want to do. Strength training actually carries over to your daily activities." PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Can lifting weights help one lose weight When asked whether one can lose weight by doing weights or if cardio exercise or mandatory in order to do so, Erin surprised us with her response. "If you compare cardio and strength, I would say both can help lose weight. If you want to lose weight fast, cardio is a good way to start." "If you’ve never done anything before and want to start, running and high intensity interval training, if you do it regularly like almost everyday or every other day, that would be the fastest way to lose weight. If you compare it to strength lifting, you lift for one hour, you don't burn as many calories so maybe that’s why people have that perception." PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Why I say that strength training can also help to lose weight is because in the long term if you do strength training, you build muscles. And when you build lean muscle mass, you’re actually increasing your resting metabolic rate. Resting metabolic rate is when your body naturally burns calories when you’re at rest." "If you have higher muscle mass in your body, your resting metabolic rate will increase. So for long term weight loss, go for strength training. - Transformative Benefits of Yoga, a Path to Mind-Body Wellness : Fit Talk Podcast with Chermaine and JX [Ep 4 - part 2]
As we wind down the year and approach the holiday season, we explore the benefits of holistic workouts that benefit us not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG In recent years, the landscape of sports and fitness has evolved significantly, with women taking centre stage in what was once a male-dominated arena. Podcasts have emerged as a powerful platform to amplify these voices, and to celebrate the achievement of women in sports, SportPlus.sg is pleased to provide a space for women to share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs. In a fast-paced world filled with stress and distractions, the need for balance has never been more important. Yoga, a practice with ancient roots in Indian philosophy, offers a holistic approach to health, combining physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or just beginning, yoga offers a multitude of benefits that can transform not only your body but also your mind. Here we share some of the remarkable benefits yoga brings to those who embrace its practice with "Fit Talk" hosts Chermaine Zhou and Haw Jiaxuan and yoga practitioner and instructor Erin Ong at SportPlus studios . So what are some of the obvious benefits of yoga and how can it benefit endurance sports athletes? PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Some of the basic benefits of yoga is to improve your flexibility and sometimes to tone certain muscles in your body, it is also a good cross training alternative to whatever your core sport may be," says Erin. 1. Physical Health Benefits Enhanced Flexibility and Strength One of the most well-known benefits of yoga is its ability to improve flexibility. The various poses (asanas) target different muscle groups, stretching and strengthening them in a way that is gentle yet effective. Over time, regular practice helps improve the range of motion in the joints and reduces stiffness, making everyday movements easier and more fluid. Yoga also builds strength. While you’re holding poses, your body works against its own weight to tone and strengthen muscles. This can lead to better posture, reduced risk of injuries, and a more stable core. Many people also find yoga an excellent complement to other forms of exercise, enhancing their performance in activities like running, cycling, and weightlifting. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Improved Circulation and Heart Health Through the practice of yoga, particularly sequences like sun salutations and flow-based styles such as Vinyasa, practitioners experience improved blood circulation. Enhanced circulation not only benefits the cardiovascular system but also supports the body’s natural detoxification processes. Certain yoga poses also lower blood pressure and reduce the strain on the heart, contributing to overall heart health. Pain Relief Yoga has proven to be an effective treatment for chronic pain conditions, such as lower back pain, arthritis, and migraines. By incorporating gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, yoga helps alleviate discomfort by releasing muscle tension, improving spinal alignment, and increasing blood flow to affected areas. It is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from conditions caused by poor posture or repetitive strain. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Fun fact, how long do people usually hold yoga poses for?" asked Chermaine. To which Erin replied: "typically if you see people doing hatha yoga, we tend to hold these poses for ten long breaths." "It feels like 10 minutes to be honest," chuckles Chermaine. "For yoga poses we don't usually hold it for that long, but perhaps for at least 1-2 minutes?" said Erin in response. "For yoga focusing on your breath is important. So we will try to relax and bring ourselves to the present moment and focus on your breathing. These are the things we take note of." 2. Mental and Emotional Well-Being Stress Reduction and Relaxation One of the most immediate benefits people experience with yoga is a reduction in stress levels. The deep breathing techniques and mindfulness practices incorporated into yoga help activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” system—counteracting the fight-or-flight response that occurs when we’re stressed. This helps lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promotes relaxation. As yoga fosters a sense of inner calm, it also teaches practitioners to be more present in the moment, reducing feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. This meditative quality of yoga is often compared to mindfulness meditation, where practitioners focus on breathwork and bodily sensations, letting go of distracting thoughts. "Some of the non-physical benefits of yoga is that it helps us to release stress and have better sleep. So even in difficult poses, we are encouraged to breathe - inhaling and exhaling deeply, which naturally helps us to release tension from our bodies," says Erin. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Improved Sleep Quality Yoga can also improve the quality of sleep, particularly for those struggling with insomnia or irregular sleep patterns. The combination of physical movement, breathing exercises, and meditation calms the nervous system and prepares the body for rest. Poses like Child’s Pose, Legs Up the Wall, and forward folds are especially beneficial for promoting relaxation before bedtime, helping you drift into a peaceful slumber. Increased Emotional Resilience Through the practice of yoga, individuals can develop emotional resilience, becoming more attuned to their thoughts, feelings, and reactions. The emphasis on mindfulness enables practitioners to approach challenges with greater clarity and equanimity. Regular practice helps you stay grounded and calm in difficult situations, leading to improved emotional regulation and a healthier mental state. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG 3. Enhancing Self-Awareness and Mindfulness Yoga encourages self-reflection and introspection, helping practitioners connect with their inner selves. The process of practicing yoga is not just about perfecting poses; it’s about building a deeper connection with your body, mind, and spirit. As you focus on your breath and movements, you become more attuned to your thoughts and sensations, increasing self-awareness. This awareness spills over into everyday life. You may notice that you are more mindful of your posture, eating habits, or emotional responses. By learning to listen to your body’s signals, you can make healthier choices and respond more thoughtfully to situations. 4. Spiritual Growth and Connection For many, yoga is more than just a physical practice—it's a path to spiritual growth. It provides a space to explore one’s sense of purpose, connection, and inner peace. The meditative aspects of yoga often foster a deep sense of presence, allowing individuals to connect with their higher self, the universe, or a sense of divine energy. Yoga’s holistic approach also teaches a philosophy of compassion, non-violence (ahimsa), and non-attachment, principles that can lead to greater harmony with oneself and others. Whether practiced for spiritual or purely physical reasons, yoga helps cultivate a sense of gratitude, balance, and peace. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG 5. Social and Community Benefits Yoga is often practiced in a group setting, creating a sense of community and support. Many people find that attending regular yoga classes offers not just physical benefits but social ones as well. The shared experience of practicing together fosters connections with like-minded individuals, providing opportunities for personal growth and mutual encouragement. In addition to group classes, there are countless yoga retreats, workshops, and online communities that offer further chances to deepen your practice and form lasting friendships. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG In Summary Yoga offers more than just a way to stretch or get in shape—it is a holistic practice that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. From improving flexibility and strength to fostering emotional resilience and mindfulness, the benefits of yoga are far-reaching and transformative. Whether you’re looking to enhance your physical health, reduce stress, or find a deeper sense of inner peace, yoga provides a powerful tool to achieve greater well-being. Embrace the practice, and you may just find that yoga’s transformative powers go far beyond the mat.
