- Unlocking Endurance Potential [Part 1]: How NMN and NAD+ Can Boost Performance for Older Athletes
Singapore triathlete and national record holder Ben Khoo talks us through the benefits of sports supplementation, why they are needed beyond natural foods for endurance athletes and the science behind Live Long Long PHOTO: BEN KHOO As we age, the demands on our bodies change. For endurance athletes, the ability to push through long hours of training or race day intensity becomes harder as we age. The recovery times increase, energy dips, and the effects of wear-and-tear on muscles and joints become more pronounced. But recently there's a growing area of interest in sports science that could be the key to unlocking the next level of performance for older athletes: NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) and NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) . These compounds are making waves as powerful allies in the fight against the physical effects of aging and fatigue. While NMN supplements are not entirely new they are generally rather pricey, and Singapore triathlete and national IRONMAN record holder Ben Khoo recognises that there is still an existing gap on how it is catered for athletes and sports performance, the reason behind him founding local sports supplement brand Live Long Long . PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Ben shares with SportPlus.sg readers on The Athletes' Voice podcast: "I was running and cycling against much younger athletes and I realised I no longer had the explosive power I used to. We got off the bike and the younger athletes would just sprint off while I needed a kilometre to warm-up the legs before I could hit my goal pace. So it wasn't a lack of fitness but a lack of explosivity which you lose with age." He added: "I realised if it was going to be like this, I would need to find a solution otherwise I would no longer be competitive as an athlete. That's when I came across NMN, which is a supplement used by bio hackers. I looked through the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) list of banned substances and saw that it is not a banned substance." "It has great benefits, so how come no one was taking it? It boils down to just a lack of awareness." PHOTO: BEN KHOO The Aging Dilemma: Declining Energy and Endurance Ben is not alone in battling age as an endurance athlete with studies showing that with a global population that is ageing, many athletes are competing well into their 30s, 40s and 50s. But to understand the importance of NMN in how it helps athletes we first need to know what NAD+ is. NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every cell of our body, responsible for facilitating essential processes like cellular energy production, DNA repair, and mitochondrial health. As we get older, our levels of NAD+ naturally decline, which in turn impacts our stamina, energy production, and recovery ability — all key factors for endurance athletes. PHOTO: BEN KHOO This drop in NAD+ is linked to fatigue, muscle decline, and slower recovery, all of which make the demands of training and competition harder to meet. Enter NMN, a precursor to NAD+. Research has shown that supplementing with NMN can boost NAD+ levels, improving mitochondrial function and energy production. For aging athletes, this could mean better endurance, faster recovery, and reduced muscle degeneration over time. The potential for NMN and NAD+ to reverse some of the negative effects of aging is now being explored as part of a broader strategy to extend athletic longevity and performance. PHOTO: BEN KHOO How NMN and NAD+ Work: The Science Behind the Boost So, why is NAD+ so important for endurance athletes? NAD+ plays a vital role in converting food into energy, a process that fuels everything from long runs to cycling marathons. It's also involved in muscle function, cellular repair, and maintaining the integrity of our DNA. Without sufficient NAD+, the body struggles to generate the energy required for sustained athletic performance. As we age, NAD+ levels naturally decline, which contributes to diminished stamina and slower recovery times. This can be particularly frustrating for older athletes who feel their endurance and performance waning as the years go by. But research shows that by increasing NAD+ levels, through supplements like NMN, we can support the body’s energy production, reduce fatigue, and improve muscle function. PHOTO: BEN KHOO "I took NMN and found it really effective, it even helped me break the Singapore IRONMAN record in 2023. So after that I thought why don't everyone take it? That's when I decided to start Live Long Long and go direct to customer, to provide it at an accessible price as it is usually really expensive," shared Ben. NMN and NAD+ in Action for Older Athletes For older athletes, the benefits of NMN supplementation are substantial. Not only does NMN work to elevate NAD+ levels, but it also improves mitochondrial efficiency, helping the body produce more energy for longer periods. Athletes who incorporate NMN into their routines often experience better endurance, quicker recovery, and overall improved performance. PHOTO: @TOOKHOOFORSKHOO Instagram But why should we consider supplements instead of trying to get the necessary nutrients from natural foods? Ben shares: "We can't produce enough NAD in our body as we age, we have to consume 100kg of broccoli a day to raise the NAD levels sufficiently in our bodies - to put things into context." In addition to supplementation however, it is true that several foods naturally contain compounds that support NAD+ production. For example, niacin (Vitamin B3) and tryptophan, both precursors to NAD+, can be found in foods like chicken, salmon, turkey, mushrooms, and peanuts. These can help maintain NAD+ levels naturally, though for athletes with more demanding performance goals, supplementation may provide more direct and impactful results. PHOTO: BEN KHOO Boosting NAD+ Through Natural Foods in our Diet: What to Eat To support NAD+ levels and overall endurance, older athletes can focus on several key nutritional strategies: NMN-Rich Foods : While NMN is available as a supplement, you can also find trace amounts of NMN in foods such as edamame, broccoli, cabbage, and avocados. These foods can complement a diet aimed at maintaining high NAD+ levels. NAD+ Precursors : Niacin (B3), found in foods like turkey, chicken, salmon, and mushrooms, plays a critical role in NAD+ production. Similarly, tryptophan, an amino acid found in eggs, cheese, and chicken, is another important precursor to NAD+. Niacin (B3) is found in foods like turkey, chicken, salmon, and mushrooms, and play a critical role in NAD+ production. Polyphenol-Rich Foods : Berries, dark chocolate, and green tea contain antioxidants and polyphenols that activate the pathways that boost NAD+ levels, helping to combat the oxidative stress that can come with intense training. CoQ10 for Mitochondrial Health : Foods like fatty fish, organ meats, and spinach are rich in CoQ10, an antioxidant that supports mitochondrial function and works well alongside NMN to enhance endurance and reduce fatigue. Berries are a rich source of antioxidants. Hydration, Sleep, and Recovery No matter how good your nutrition is, hydration and rest remain the cornerstones of athletic recovery, particularly as we age. Dehydration can impede the body’s ability to utilize NAD+ for energy production. Similarly, poor sleep negatively impacts NAD+ levels, making recovery more difficult. Older athletes should focus on maintaining hydration and establishing a solid sleep routine to ensure their bodies are primed for recovery. When it comes to post-workout recovery, be sure to replenish with a combination of protein, carbohydrates, and antioxidants to fuel muscle repair and reduce inflammation. This recovery phase is where NAD+ boosting nutrients can have a significant impact, accelerating recovery and preventing excessive fatigue. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The Future of Endurance and Aging Athletes As the understanding of NMN and NAD+ continues to evolve, more endurance athletes are beginning to embrace their potential to improve performance and prolong athletic longevity. While these compounds are not a cure-all, incorporating NMN into your routine — alongside a healthy diet and consistent training regimen — could help older athletes continue to excel in their sports. Incorporating NMN and NAD+ into your diet and training routine is more than just a trend; it's part of a larger effort to ensure athletes of all ages can continue doing what they love for as long as possible. So, whether you're an aging marathoner, cyclist, or triathlete, adding NMN and NAD+ support into your nutrition plan could be the game-changer you’ve been looking for. By investing in your body's energy production and recovery with the right nutrition, you can help unlock the full potential of your endurance training and keep pushing boundaries, no matter your age. For endurance athletes looking to boost your NAD+ levels, fuel your passion, and keep going further you may wish to consider Live Long Long sports supplement founded by Ben Khoo — because age is just a number when it comes to endurance. - Pedal Smart: Expert Podiatrist Tips to Prevent Cycling Injuries with Team Singapore Cyclist Yeo Boon Kiak
SEA Games Cyclist Yeo Boon Kiak joins SportPlus.sg to share tips on how cyclists can prevent injuries PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG OCBC Cycle is back! Today, we chat with Yeo Boon Kiak , a Team Singapore cyclist, 3-time SEA Games athlete and bronze medalist and a practicing podiatrist, on some useful tips that can help cyclist prevent injuries. As a podiatrist and founder of Podiatry Quest , Boon Kiak has seen firsthand some of the most common injuries attributed to cycling and understands the unique challenges that cyclists face when cycling for long hours on the road. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Cycling, while an incredibly rewarding sport, places repetitive strain on the body, particularly the lower extremities, which can lead to a variety of injuries if not managed properly. Whether you’re a competitive racer or a weekend rider, the key to enjoying cycling without the setback of injuries lies in preventive care. In this article, we share Boon Kiak's expert advice on injury prevention, focusing on techniques and habits that can protect your feet, legs, and overall biomechanics, ensuring you stay on track and pain-free throughout your cycling journey. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Without further ado, here are some tips on how to prevent injuries for cyclists from common cycling injuries 1. Find the right cycling shoes A suitable pair of cycling shoes has a right size and width which can significantly improve comfort and performance while cycling. Tight shoes cause numbness, loose shoes reduce stability and efficiency. 2. Perform Strengthening and Rehabilitative Exercises to maintain good posture and form on the bike Strengthening and rehabilitative exercises are crucial for preventing cycling injuries by improving muscle balance, flexibility, and endurance. These exercises can help cyclists maintain proper posture, reduce strain on key muscle groups, and prevent overuse injuries. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG 3. Go for a Bike Fit To ensure you are sized up well with your bike. This will help ensure that you can ride for long periods and comfortably and enjoy your cycling fully 4. Stop Occasionally to Wiggle Your Toes and Stretch Your Legs This is a simple but effective tip for preventing cycling injuries, particularly for your feet, legs, and lower back. Here’s how it helps: Improves Circulation : While cycling, especially on long rides, your feet can become stiff, leading to reduced blood flow. Wiggling your toes helps stimulate circulation and prevents numbness or discomfort. Relieves Tension : Cycling can sometimes lead to tension building in the feet or lower legs. Moving your toes helps stretch and relax the muscles, potentially preventing cramps or tightness. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Boosts Flexibility : This small movement encourages mobility in your toes, helping maintain the flexibility of your feet and ankles. This can be crucial when cycling long distances, where stiffness can lead to overuse injuries. Prevents Foot Numbness : If you're experiencing numbness while riding, this can be a sign of pressure on certain nerves. Wiggling your toes may help relieve that pressure and keep the nerves active, reducing discomfort. 5. Check for Redness and Swelling or any discomfort Cycling for long hours can cause your feet to swell a phenomenon often referred to as "hot foot" where pressure from prolonged pedaling compresses nerves in the ball of the foot, leading to swelling and discomfort, particularly during long or hilly rides. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG 6. Stay Hydrated and Replenish on Electrolytes Replenishing electrolytes is important for the body to prevent swelling that can exacerbate foot discomfort while cycling. Drinks such as 100PLUS Active help cyclists to stay hydrated, with hydration playing a key role in preventing foot injuries, especially for cyclists. Here’s how staying properly hydrated helps protect your feet: Prevents Muscle Cramps : Dehydration can cause muscles to contract and cramp more easily. Since cycling involves a lot of repetitive pedaling, dehydration can lead to cramps in the feet, calves, and other muscles. Proper hydration helps maintain muscle function and reduces the risk of cramping, which can often occur in the feet during long rides. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Maintains Fluid Balance : When your body is well-hydrated, your tissues, including those in your feet, stay lubricated and flexible. This is particularly important for preventing strain on tendons and ligaments, which could lead to injuries such as plantar fasciitis or tendinitis. Improves Circulation : Staying hydrated helps to keep your blood circulating efficiently, ensuring that your feet receive adequate oxygen and nutrients. Good circulation can help prevent swelling, numbness, and discomfort, all of which are common issues for cyclists, particularly during long rides or in hot weather. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Reduces Risk of Overuse Injuries : Dehydration can increase fatigue, making your muscles work harder and putting additional stress on your feet. When you're properly hydrated, your energy levels and endurance improve, allowing you to maintain proper form and technique, which reduces the risk of overuse injuries. In short, proper hydration supports overall muscle function, circulation, and recovery, which all play a key role in preventing foot injuries while cycling. And there you have it, six big tips from Boon Kiak, Singapore's national cyclist and podiatrist on how you can reduce the chances of cycling injuries. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG We hope this has been of some help on your cycling journey! If you found it useful, don't forget to share it with your friends too. - Beyond Limits: A Journey of Personal Discovery at Singapore T100
SportPlus.sg speaks with two aspiring amateur duathletes, buoyed by newfound self-belief in endurance sports looking to conquer this year’s Marina Bay spectacle PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG It might sound like a wild idea, but what’s life without a little detour off the beaten path? You may have just accidentally set yourself some new fitness goals at the start of this year, and looking for ways to keep yourself accountable. Apart from the obvious big events like HYROX and Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon that are way further down the calendar, the Singapore T100 provides a compelling proposition for amateur athletes to test their fitness levels. And heck you don’t even need to be good at it to begin. With the Singapore T100 2025 less than two months away, there’s no better time to take on that new challenge. Set to return on 5th and 6th April, aspiring multi-sport athletes will have the chance to take on various races throughout the weekend before some of the world’s best triathletes take on the Singapore circuit. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Off the back of last year’s success, athletes will be able to compete in the 100km Triathlon, the Standard Duathlon, and the Long Duathlon, all available for both individual and team relay participants. The Singapore T100 follows closely after the MetaSprint Series: Duathlon and Triathlon , offering athletes a back-to-back challenge early in the year. Helmi Mohamed was one such participant, having conquered both the MetaSprint Duathlon and the Singapore T100 Long Duathlon in 2024. “Doing the MetaSprint Series: Duathlon made me realize how fun and challenging multi-sport racing is. After that race, I knew I wanted to explore more multi-sport events, and that’s what led me to take on the T100 Long Duathlon,” he shared. “Racing the T100 Long Duathlon last year really triggered something in me—the need to challenge myself even more. It felt like running a marathon, just on two disciplines. And doing it in the late morning? Brutal. I had cramps all over, but it became a benchmark for me to see exactly where I needed to improve. That experience made me want to push even further.” Using the MetaSprint Series: Duathlon as his training race, the marathoner managed to figure out his strengths and weaknesses. “I knew my running was solid, but my cycling needed work, so I made a 12-week program just to focus on the bike. That really paid off, especially when I had to climb Benjamin Sheares Bridge four times during the T100. Without that structured training, I would’ve suffered way more,” he recalled. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The grueling nature of duathlons and triathlons is no secret, but that’s precisely what defines the thrill of competing in them. Nothing quite beats the feeling of crossing the finish line and uncovering potential you never knew was brewing in you. That’s exactly what Jezekiel Samson is looking forward to most as he looks ahead to the race this year. Emulating Helmi’s journey to multi-sport, Jezekiel , better known as Kiel, is set to take on his first ever multi-sport race this year. After completing his first marathon at the Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon last year, the pride he felt drove him to take up cycling. Before he knew it, he had signed up for both the individual MetaSprint Series: Duathlon and the Singapore T100 Long Duathlon . PHOTO VIA KIEL SAMSON “When I saw the T100 Long Duathlon, I thought, ‘This is insane…but what if I actually did it?’ I knew signing up for something big would force me to stay committed. I also love long endurance efforts. The mental battle that comes with it, the feeling of pushing past limits, so T100 just made sense. It scares me, but in the best way possible,” he shared. Kiel began training for his T100 race in December last year. Now, with just two months until race day, he’s discovered more about himself beyond just his physical strengths. Fueled by his passion for endurance sports, he encourages others with similar interests to take the leap. “Whether you’re new to multisport or have been doing it for years, T100 gives you a reason to push yourself. It’s not just about the race itself, it’s so much more. It’s about the entire journey. The training, the small wins, the lessons you learn about yourself along the way. And then standing on the start line, knowing how much work you’ve put in. That feeling alone makes it worth it,” gushed Kiel about the race. Speaking about his preparations so far, he said, “It’s taught me that growth comes from being uncomfortable. I was so used to just running, and suddenly, I had to learn how to pace on the bike, how to do transitions and how to train differently. Some days felt great, and some were frustrating and just exhausting. But showing up, even when it’s tough, is what actually makes you better.” PHOTO VIA KIEL SAMSON Having already shattered his personal barriers, Helmi confidently shared why the Singapore T100 is the perfect race for bettering yourself. “It will be so much fun. You’ll gain so much from it. Plus, you’ll meet new people along the way, and they’ll share tips that will help you improve. The whole journey is worth it.” Venturing into the unknown is undeniably daunting, but you never know what awaits on the other side. For Kiel, the joy he knows he’ll feel once he crosses the finish line is what gives him the courage to toe the start line. To anyone still doubting themselves, he shared, “I totally get it. I had the same doubts! Like, what if I’m terrible at cycling? What if I mess up my transitions? But I feel that you don’t have to be great at something to start. Everyone feels a little lost at first, but you eventually figure things out along the way. Just sign up for the race, train as best as you can, and trust yourself. That feeling of crossing the finish line, knowing you pushed through the nerves? It’s worth it.” If you’re on the fence about wanting to sign up, take this as a sign. PHOTO: OCBC CYCLE The Foldie Ride by Brompton category, which was sold out in the first month of launch last year, will expand to accommodate 1,500 cyclists, an increase from last year’s 1,000 cyclists. This increase was made after many unsuccessful registrants wrote in to request the release of more slots. A new virtual ride for cyclists to complete a round island ride in Singapore has been created. Many post-event surveys told us that participants enjoyed the long-distance virtual rides on an own-time-on-target basis. 100 per cent of the survey respondents have indicated they will return for the following year’s event. This year, tapping on the trend of cyclists’ desire to complete a round-island ride as a badge of honour, the first OCBC Cycle Round Island Virtual Ride will be launched, with only 100 exclusive slots available. PHOTO: OCBC CYCLE The 100km Virtual Ride, where a cyclist can complete 100km within four separate rides, will continue to be available for participants who wish to use it as a way to bond with family and friends. More information about the Virtual Rides can be found in Annex D. Close to 400 young cyclists and their families taking part in The Mighty Savers® Kids Ride categories will end the route in the National Stadium for the first time. This emulates the same experience by adult cyclists of the signature community rides, giving all participants the chance to bask in the grandeur of one of the region’s top sporting venues. The Sportive Ride (40km) and The Straits Times Ride (20km) will remain at the heart of the event, offering cyclists the chance to ride on closed roads with iconic landmarks in the background, like the Benjamin Sheares Bridge, the Singapore Flyer, and Gardens by the Bay. PHOTO: OCBC CYCLE Ms Helen Wong, Group CEO of OCBC, said: “We have always leveraged OCBC Cycle to promote and support cycling – as a sport for health and fitness, and a social activity for community bonding. With 1,300km of cycling paths under Singapore’s Island Cycling Network Programme by 2030, we believe interest in the sport can only grow. OCBC Cycle will continue to be an integral part of the eco-system. Seeing thousands of cyclists on safe, closed roads in Singapore year after year is an experience not to be missed – here’s a shout-out to our past participants and warm welcome to new ones! We are also grateful to the local authorities – LTA and SportSG – for their unwavering support since OCBC Cycle’s inception in 2009.” PHOTO: OCBC CYCLE Specially designed Disney cycling T-shirt to be won Riding on the Bank’s five-year partnership with Disney, OCBC Cycle will also be giving away limited-edition Disney-themed cycling tees to 500 lucky participants who sign up for one of the three community rides: The Sportive Ride (40km), The Foldie Ride by Brompton (40km) and The Straits Times Ride (20km) during the early bird registration period. Singapore Airlines Tickets to Japan and London to be won Participants will also stand to win flight tickets to cities in Japan, with the destination varying based on the registration phases. Participants who did not win the time-specific lucky draw prizes will be eligible for the grand lucky draw featuring a cycling trip for two in London (lasting six days and seven nights) complete with Singapore Airlines economy class tickets, accommodation and a money-cannot-buy exclusive tour of the renowned Brompton factory. PHOTO: OCBC CYCLE Additionally, the grand lucky draw prize pool also consists of the top-of-the-line Brompton T Line urban bicycle and a 3D2N staycation at JEN Singapore Orchardgateway. All participants who signed up for the three community rides during the early bird period will be eligible for a chance to win the exclusive Disney-themed cycling T-shirt. All they have to do is choose one of their favourite Star Wars-themed card face on the registration portal that could be launched for future OCBC credit and debit cards later. #OCBCCycle #LetsGoCycle

- Football: adidas Unveils Predator 25 – Inspired By Its Legacy, Upgraded for the Modern Goalscorer
Best-in-class adidas technologies have been upgraded to deal with the demands of the modern game and support goal scoring, including newly tuned versions of STRIKESKIN and HYBRIDTOUCH 2.0 PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Singapore, January 10, 2025 – Today, adidas unveils the newest version of the iconic Predator franchise, Predator 25 , blending archival colour nods and design features – with technology updates that pave the way for a new generation. Visually, Predator 25 enhances the vibrant red often associated with the classic tongue, which decorates the entire upper in a bolder representation of the boot’s iconic DNA. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The design further leans into its past with an unmistakable nod to the Predator Accelerator (1998), with wavy black lines that weave through the brand’s three stripes, which are now found on both the medial and lateral sides of the boot. The boot’s aesthetic is finished with the ‘Predator’ branding, which is displayed on the side of the heel and on the tongue. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Sam Handy, GM Football at adidas said: “The Predator franchise has always been based on pushing the boundaries of boot design – starting with a product that fundamentally altered the landscape of the game. Last year we revisited the archive to reconnect the tongue with a new generation of player. For Predator 25 we focus on adding more character via an adapted visual story that hints at - and reskins - beloved aspects of earlier icons. Under the hood, we have tweaked and upgraded the existing performance technologies, to create something really special for 2025.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Predator 25 arrives with an updated upper construction – including an upgraded STRIKESKIN , re-engineered to enhance grip between boot and ball, via higher quantities of - and longer - rubber elements on the strike zone of the boot. For an improved fit and feel HYBRIDTOUCH 2.0 again applied across the upper of the boot, but with less layers to reduce break-in time, and provide a more moulded fit, while also providing additional cushioning in key areas for comfort and a soft touch on the ball. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG The boot’s fold over tongue returns with fresh elements for improved strike and protection, including an additional layer of foam for foot protection, and new rubber elements that improve touch and feel when striking the ball. Also returning after a successful introduction last year is CONTROLFRAME 2.0 – a lightweight soleplate that supports traction, acceleration, and rapid rotational movement of players, through its full-length tooling and external heel counter. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Alessia Russo said: “For me, the Predator boot is about being bold and making a statement on the pitch – from how it supports your goals to how iconic its design is. The tongue, which is hands down my favourite thing about it, is even better on this one, and the colourway is something else – I’m buzzing to play in it this year and see what I can do in front of goal.” Predator 25 will feature in laced and laceless versions, in addition to a classic laced with a fold over tongue and will be worn on pitch by some of the game’s most iconic players – including Aitana Bonmati, Jude Bellingham, Alessia Russo, Pedri and more. - HOKA Clifton 9 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 2]
In the latest episode of "Sole Mates", our Running Shoes Series, we review HOKA’s latest daily trainer with Cheryl Tay, content creator and local triathlete PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG As part of an ongoing collaboration with Singapore's premier running specialty i Run Singapore , SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators and Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. In the second episode of SportPlus.sg's running shoes review series 'Sole Mates', Cheryl Tay , a triathlete and founder of body positivity movement Rock The Naked Truth , gives her valued opinion of the HOKA Clifton 9 , daily trainers launched in February this year known for being remarkably light. Are these daily trainers really the perfect sole mates for runners? Read on to find out. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Overview A quick look at the HOKA Clifton 9 . HOKA's basic design and purpose have remained the same over the years which is to provide a lightweight and cushioned running shoe for long-distance running. Noticeable Upgrades and Specs - More breathable upper: Nice engineered knit with a breathable mesh material for improved ventilation and a good lockdown overall - Meta Rocker Technology: having a better toe off, not so much on the energy return. More of a "cushy", comfortable, and leisurely type of running shoe. It does have the rocker technology that helps propel you forward - Improved fit: redesigned collar with a more anatomical shape that fits more securely around the ankle and reduces slippage - Supportive design: Most noticeable upgrade would be that Clifton 9 is lighter than its previous editions. The weight has been reduced. 3mm extra stack height, overall heel to toe drop of 5mm. 32mm in the rearfoot and 27mm in the forefoot. Slightly wider platform for enhanced stability and comfort. - Midsole: Uses compression molded EVA foam, the same technology that HOKA has used in the Clifton series - Outsole: Dubrasion Rubber Outsole PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Cheryl’s Personal Experience Running with the HOKA Clifton 9 running shoes It’s good to have shoes in rotation, especially a daily neutral trainer, max, or highly cushioned type of running shoe that will help reduce the stress on your feet. It’s very harsh and aggressive if you use too much of your carbon-plated shoes. What do you like about the shoe? Despite having thick cushioning, it’s actually quite light. And that is very important to me, as I don’t want it to be too bulky or chunky. It’s also breathable, and for the weather in Singapore, which can be really hot, it doesn't make my feet burn. I also like the heel collar area, as for me, I prefer my ankle area to be supported. And very well cushioned as well. Not to forget that it doesn't poke into my heel. What do you dislike about the shoe or think can be improved? I would prefer this shoe to be a bit softer. It’s quite firm compared to other similar max cushioned, neutral daily trainers. But then, it’s a personal preference. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating Comfort : 4/5 Stability : 4/5 Responsiveness : 3/5 Grippiness : 4/5 Value for Money : 3/5 PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Taking all this into consideration Cheryl would give the HOKA Clifton 9 and overall rating of 3.8 / 5 soles, and would recommend to runners doing their marathon training or multi-day races. HOKA Clifton 9 is currently going for S$229 and can be purchased from any iRun Store or online . #HOKASG #HOKAClifton9
