  • KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2025: Team Singapore Shuttlers Remain Motivated and Embrace Tough Opening Tests

Team Singapore's shuttlers shared about facing top seeds in their opening rounds, and how they hope to fair at this year's KFF Singapore Badminton Open set to begin tomorrow PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / DAVID JOSEPH The  KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2025 (KFF SBO) is set to once again deliver world-class action, with the official draw unveiling a slate of exciting matchups and key tests for Singapore’s top shuttlers. Held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from 27 May to 1 June, the US$ 1 million tournament is a key stop on the BWF World Tour Super 750 series, attracting the world’s best shuttlers to the Lion City.   Local Men’s Singles Stars Draw Top Seeds in First Round   World No. 10  Loh Kean Yew  will open his campaign against European Champion and world No. 9 Alex Lanier, in a rematch of their three-game thriller at the 2024 Denmark Open, where the young French star edged past Loh 21-18, 15-21, 24-22.   Should Loh advance, he is on course to face either Japan’s Yushi Tanaka or France’s Toma Junior Popov in the Round of 16. Loh holds a 1–0 head-to-head record against Tanaka and a commanding 5–0 record against Popov.   Loh said: “It’s going to be challenging, because we’re up against the very best in the world here. But playing at home in Singapore is always special. The cheers from the crowd lift me, and I’m ready to give it everything I’ve got.” At last year's edition of SBO, Loh was the last Singaporean standing after making it to the quarter-finals, where he ultimately fell to Li Shi Feng. He had defeated Lu Guangzu in the opening game, before delivering an electrifying performance against Anders Antonsen in the Round of 16.   PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Jason Teh , ranked world No. 22, faces a daunting first-round test against defending champion and world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi. The two previously met at the 2023 Sudirman Cup, where Shi prevailed in straight games. Teh will be looking to turn the tables this time, backed by home support and with more valuable experience on the world stage under his belt since their last encounter. Teh is competing at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 this week. "We have to stay consistent from the first point to the last because if you lose focus in between rallies, you'll be caught off guard and against world-class players like Shi Yu Qi, you'll lose points very easily," said the 24-year-old at the pre-tournament press conference held on Monday (26 May) morning. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / DAVID JOSEPH "Through my previous matches, I've learned that you have to stick to a certain intensity and I need to build all of this in training and even through losses against these top players. This week, against Shi Yu Qi, it'll be a good a good experience for me so I'll just give my all and challenge him."   Yeo Gears Up for Tough Fight Ahead PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / DAVID JOSEPH Singapore’s top women’s singles player,  Yeo Jia Min , ranked world No. 12, will face Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the opening round, with their head-to-head record evenly split at 3-3. Yeo won their most recent meeting in straight games at the China Open last September.   A win would see Yeo take on defending champion, Olympic gold medalist, and world No. 1 An Se Young, who is aiming for a third consecutive Singapore Open title. Also featuring in the top half of the draw is last year’s finalist and reigning Badminton Asia Championships winner Chen Yu Fei, setting the stage for potential mouthwatering clashes later in the tournament. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR “It’s no doubt a tough draw, but I am prepared to give my best for all the Singaporean fans who are here to support us,” said Yeo.   New Pairings Face Off in Mixed Doubles Showdown   In the mixed doubles, Singapore’s newly formed duo  Terry Hee Yong Kai  and  Jin Yujia , ranked world No. 28, will take on Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, another recently formed pair.  It’s set to be a closely contested encounter, with the local pair facing opponents who have already made their mark in 2025 by winning the Polish Open and reaching the quarterfinals of the All England Open. The Indonesians are currently ranked world No. 27. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / DAVID JOSEPH "I never really focused on the ranking to be honest, but more of the process and the chemistry between me and Yujia. I think there's still much to work on," shared Hee at the press conference. "For me, there was a big change in the whole game plan in terms of the game's dynamics," shared Yujia, who previously competed in women's doubles with Crystal Wong. "How you approach every shot is different in mixed doubles, compared to women's doubles. I think I'm still figuring it out and there's much to come." Read more about Hee and Yujia's career as partners so far in our feature, written for with Kallang Alive Sports Management, here . The KFF SBO begins tomorrow at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, with matches slated to begin at 10am. #KFFSBO2025

  • New Balance SuperComp Elite v4 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 20]

Singapore running enthusiast and content creator Melissa Foo returns to Sole Mates for a second time to share her thoughts on New Balance’s latest race day shoe - the New Balance SuperComp Elite v4. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a   SportPlus.sg  initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg  has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. A collaboration celebrating New Balance’s ‘Run Your Way’ philosophy and this year's Nagoya Women's Marathon and Nagoya City Marathon, SportPlus.sg  kicks off 2024’s first 3 episodes of "Sole Mates" delving into the latest New Balance running shoes, to garner insights into how shoes can embody every runner’s unique personality and running style. Having gone through three previous iterations, the New Balance SuperComp Elite v4 pretty much redesigned the entire silhouette of its SC Elite shoe, and has garnered many positive reviews so far. Running influencer Melissa Foo is the guest on set to share with host John Yeong on her thoughts about how the SuperComp Elite v4 has helped her with her up tempo runs, and how it fares against earlier versions of the shoe.  You can read up on our special feature of Melissa Foo for the Nagoya Women’s Marathon here . Featuring a ‘White With Bleached Lime Glo And Hot Mango’ colourway, the SuperComp Elite v4 measures 40mm in the rearfoot and 36mm in the forefoot. This means an overall offset of 4mm, which is considered pretty gentle for race day shoes on the whole. On the exterior not only does the shoe look sleek with a more prominent rocker profile, it is also very colourful in both its campaign colour and London 2024 colourways !  Weighing at 237g, the shoe weighs slightly heavier than SC Elite v3 , but is still a lightweight shoe with a stronger pop that makes it more well received by most runners. Melissa shares with us three key features of the New Balance SuperComp Elite v4 , followed by her own personal experience using the shoe. Read on to find out more. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Updated Fuelcell Midsole Possibly the biggest advancement of the Supercomp Elite V4 , this racing shoe boasts a groundbreaking midsole foam crafted entirely from 100% PEBA, setting a new standard in lightweight yet responsive cushioning. This innovative material, combined with a redesigned carbon fibre plate, marks a significant leap forward in performance technology.  With an impressive 87% energy return, a notable improvement from its predecessor's 83% in the v3, athletes can expect unparalleled propulsion and efficiency with every stride. The incorporation of this advanced midsole foam not only enhances energy return but also ensures a dynamic and responsive ride, enabling athletes to push their limits and achieve their goals with confidence.  Whether racing on the track or tackling long distances on the road, it can be safely said that the FuelCell Supercomp Elite V4 empowers Melissa to perform at her best, providing the support and propulsion needed as a race day shoe to reach her running goals. Thinner Mesh Upper PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Upon first impression, the updated upper mesh feels a lot more breathable and lighter compared to the previous version as the v4 has a thinner mesh. This feature was made possible when New Balance’s FantomFit technology made its return.  FantomFit technology utilises a no-sew process to create a fused upper material, which reduces weight while maintaining structural integrity and support. Users can expect to feel the structure in the midfoot area due to the increase in the midfoot lockdown. Melissa explains, “In Singapore’s weather, you definitely need shoes that are water-resistant. The material of the upper mesh is very breathable. Whenever it is raining, your feet will not get clogged up in water. This makes it easier to dry and clean the shoe as well.”  FantomFit technology is often incorporated into New Balance's running shoes and other performance-oriented footwear, offering athletes a combination of flexibility, support, and breathability for enhanced performance. The result is a snug and comfortable fit that moulds to the foot, providing a seamless feel and reducing the risk of irritation or discomfort during physical activity.  PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Increased Energy Return and Responsiveness Carbon fibre plates are not new to New Balance shoes, in fact New Balance were the first to introduce them into high performance daily trainers in the SC Trainer back in 2022. Similarly, these have been incorporated into the SuperComp Elite v4 as well. The full length carbon plate has a profound impact on performance, particularly in enhancing energy return and promoting forward propulsion during running.  These plates are strategically positioned within the midsole, to provide stiffness and spring-like responsiveness. When the foot strikes the ground and applies pressure, the ‘cavity’ at the bottom of the shoe expands and ‘boosts’ the user forward. “It is definitely more responsive than the v3 version as well. A lot bouncier and a lot more responsive as well!” says Melissa, comparing the responsiveness of the v4 to the v3. One of the key benefits of carbon fibre plates is their ability to increase running economy by reducing the amount of energy expended with each step. The stiffness of the plate contributes to a more stable and efficient stride, reducing fatigue and risk of injury over long distances.  Melissa adds, “When I set a higher pace on my treadmill, it continues to propel me forward and to maintain my pace even when I’m tired. The shoe does this with its energy return.” The incorporation of carbon fibre plates in New Balance shoes represents the improvement in performance for users, enabling runners to push their limits and achieve their next personal best! PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG My Personal Running Experience Ahead of the Nagoya Women’s Marathon, Melissa had been diligently training by doing long runs over the weekends. These are also accompanied by some key workout days such as interval trainings. Deciding to take the SuperComp Elite v4 out for some intervals, she noticed the responsiveness of the shoe as its stand-out feature. Melissa shares, “I did some intervals at a much faster pace in this pair of shoes. I could really feel the shoe picking up pace quite easily. The energy return is so strong, it really is returning all my energy. Even when I’m tired, the shoe automatically picks up and forces me to run at this pace.”    Host John Yeong asked, “What is one feature that you think can be improved on for future iterations?”  “I would make a wider version of the shoe. For this pair of shoes, I sized up from a US 8.5 to a US 9. The front of the shoe is wide but the middle of the shoe felt a little bit loose. I would prefer if the shoe was more tailored for people with wide feet where the middle of the shoe is still streamlined but the front remains wide,” Melissa shared. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG As part of New Balance’s ‘Run Your Way’ campaign, an initiative aimed at celebrating individuality, diversity, and personal expression within the running community. The campaign emphasises the idea that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to running and encourages runners to embrace their unique styles, preferences, and motivations. Melissa believes that the SuperComp Elite v4 is the right fit for many groups of people due to its comfort and it helps to pick up the pace. In line with the campaign, this racer shoe isn’t just made for high-performance athletes. If you are simply looking for a pair of shoes that’ll help you achieve your next running goal, then New Balance’s SuperComp Elite v4 is one you should consider as your next pair! Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating: Comfort - 4/5  Stability - 4/5 Responsiveness - 4.5/5 Grippiness - 4/5 Value for Money - 4/5 PHOTO: NEW BALANCE All things considered, Melissa Foo gives the New Balance SuperComp Elite v4 an overall rating of 4.1 Soles, and it is a pair that she definitely thinks is value for money. • New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 19]

National distance runner and New Balance athlete   Vanessa Lee shares all about New Balance’s latest Rebel v4, with host John Yeong in the latest iteration of "Sole Mates" PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series,   SportPlus.sg  has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. In a special tie-up with New Balance, SportPlus.sg kicks off the 2024 "Sole Mates" season with a series of 'Run Your Way' shoe reviews in the lead up to this year's Nagoya Women's Marathon on Sunday, 10 March 2024. Teaming up with New Balance athlete Vanessa Lee to find out if the New Balance Rebel v4 can be your perfect Sole Mate, SportPlus.sg dives into New Balance's latest daily trainer to understand how it fares against the Rebel V3 and other trainers across the same bracket.  National runner Vanessa impressively clinched the Great Eastern Women's Run and Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon half-marathon titles in 2023, and her success has inspired many aspiring athletes in Singapore and beyond as she continues to be an influential figure in the running community. You can read up on our special Vanessa Lee feature here . New Balance has once again raised the bar in the world of performance footwear with its latest daily trainer, the highly anticipated FuelCell Rebel v4 . The New Balance FuelCell Rebel series has been a widely popular choice for runners since its first release in 2019. This versatile daily trainer has been known to inject speed into daily runs, intervals, and speed workouts ever since.  Engineered for pace and agility, these shoes combine cutting-edge technology with sleek design, offering runners an exhilarating experience with every stride. While the Rebel v4 stays true to its Rebel DNA, New Balance has made some changes to deliver even better performance and comfort for runners. Crafted to be light and fast, it is built with FuelCell foam to deliver maximum propulsion and speed with minimal weight. The FuelCell Rebel v4 might just be your newest go-to shoe for any kind of run. In this episode of "Sole Mates", Vanessa Lee shares with us three key features of the Rebel v4, coupled with her own personal experience using the shoe. Featuring a ‘Spice Blue with Limelight and Blue Oasis’ campaign colourway, does this shoe live up to its hype? PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Responsive FuelCell Midsole At the middle of the FuelCell Rebel v4 lies its revolutionary midsole technology. Powered by New Balance's iconic FuelCell foam, these shoes provide an unparalleled level of responsiveness and energy return. Whether you're sprinting on the track or tackling long distances on the road, the FuelCell midsole propels you forward with each step, helping you maintain your pace and push past your limits. The pair measures 30mm in the rearfoot and 24mm in the forefoot, leading to an overall drop of 6mm. How does the Rebel v4 achieve this? The geometric FuelCell midsole is made with a new 20% PEBA and 80% EVA blend which provides a taller and wider bed of lightweight cushioning, while also maintaining that propulsive feel. The Rebel v4 introduces an innovative blend of PEBA and FuelCell foam in its midsole, featuring a higher stack height and broader platform. This enhances both protection and stability, making it ideal for long-distance running.  The cushioning is soft enough to absorb impact, yet firm and supportive for maximum propulsion. Despite these enhancements, the midsole maintains its lively and responsive feel, ensuring it remains suitable for faster runs. Besides responsiveness, let’s find out how the shoe delivers in terms of stability. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG FantomFit Technology A breathable mesh upper utilises FantomFit technology for added bonded support. Upper features a no-sew construction for a sleek fit and feel. To go along with the more versatile, distance-friendly midsole, the Rebel v4 has a whole new fit thanks to the updated Fantom Fit upper, which our testers praised for its irritation-free comfort and lightweight on-foot feel. In Singapore’s humid weather, these features would be a plus-point if you prioritise comfort in your daily trainers. The upper has been redesigned with a Fantom Fit construction, offering ultra-light bonded support. It balances lightweight comfort with secure fit. Additionally, the forefoot has been adjusted to provide more space, accommodating a wider range of foot shapes comfortably. Overall, the New Balance Rebel v4 combines futuristic aesthetics with performance-driven features, offering runners an appealing choice for their training needs. Vanessa emphasised, “These shoes have a very, very good lockdown. I would say that you don’t even have to tie a runner’s lace for the extra lace hole at the back. When I first wore it, I felt that the normal lacing was more than sufficient to keep my foot locked down in the shoe.”  PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Updated Outsole Pattern Taking a closer look at the outsole of the shoe, New Balance has changed the coverage and design of the outsole completely. A new rubber consisting of a mixture of compounds and a new outsole pattern design, how could these updates possibly translate to better performance during runs you may wonder? Vanessa says, “The outsole is actually made out of 55% rubber, but I personally have not run the shoe in rainy conditions yet. I did try the shoe on the roads and on the track, I really had no issues with the grippiness of the shoe.” “I really, really love the formula of the sole itself. Compared to the v3, they did take off about a bit of weight. Overall, it does make the shoe very versatile where you get the responsiveness, the lightweightness so you can take it on your easy runs. There is really a lot of cushion there, you can take it on your tempo runs, where you can get a bit faster, and even for intervals,” she adds, referring to her favourite part of the shoe. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG My Personal Running Experience “I did try an easy run and I also did an interval workout with this pair of shoes. I was actually really worried, I really liked the Rebel v3 as they are a versatile pair of shoes. When the v4 came out, I was worried that they would change too much about the shoe and I would not like it anymore. But honestly, I did not expect to love it as much as I did.”    Host John Yeong asked, “What is one feature that you think can be improved on for future iterations of the Rebel?”  “I would be nit-picking here but because my foot naturally has a narrow arch, I would prefer the middle portion of the shoe to be wider. Although the v4 has already been widened for more structure and stability, I’m having a little bit of issues when I overwork myself.” “One thing to note, if you’re in between sizes, you should consider sizing up for the Rebel v4. Personally, the back of the shoe did nudge into the back of my foot a little bit. I would recommend wearing long socks for your runs.” advises Vanessa. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG As part of New Balance’s ‘Run Your Way’ campaign, an initiative aimed at celebrating individuality, diversity, and personal expression within the running community, the campaign emphasises the idea that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to running and encourages runners to embrace their unique styles, preferences, and motivations. The Rebel v4 expresses this idea accurately, serving as a versatile pair for different types of runners. It also stays true to its Rebel DNA, whilst making added improvements to various features of the shoe. With all things considered, here are Vanessa's overall thoughts on the shoe: Sole Mates Overall Shoe Rating: Comfort - 4.5/5  Stability - 4.5/5 Responsiveness - 5/5 Grippiness - 4/5 Value for Money - 5/5 PHOTO: NEW BALANCE Taking all this into consideration Vanessa Lee gave the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 an overall rating of 4.64 Soles, and it is a great option for runners looking for a lightweight and responsive shoe that can handle both long distances and faster-paced runs. • New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v13 Review : Sole Mates [Episode 21]

Embarking on her first half-marathon journey at Nagoya City Marathon, fitness influencer and content creator Shannon Taylor shares her thoughts on New Balance’s comfortable and versatile trainer - the Fresh Foam X 1080v13  PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. Season 2 Episode 3 of "Sole Mates" saw SportPlus.sg welcome Shannon Taylor  Wong onto the show to review New Balance’s Fresh Foam X 1080v13 , launched in late 2023. Shannon, more known for her time spent in the gym, recently completed her very first half-marathon in Nagoya, Japan, but fell in love with the Fresh Foam X 1080v13 as her go-to trainer for easy runs during her half-marathon training block.  From running distances of only up to 5km to completing her very first half marathon, Shannon has proved that anything is possible if you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone and put your mind to it!   You can read up on our special feature of Shannon Taylor for the Nagoya Women’s Marathon here . Weighing at just 206 grams, the New Balance’s Fresh Foam X 1080v13  feels light on your feet, and feels smooth and natural in its transitions from heel to toe. Perhaps one of its greatest plus points is a durable rubber outsole that provides additional stiffness at the forefoot area so that runners can expect a better toe-off. This means runners can expect a soft landing in the mid foot area but not compromise on energy return for faster runs. Featuring a ‘Sea Salt with Coastal Blue and Gulf Red’ colourway, the shoe is not only aesthetically pleasing but also purposeful in a variety of ways! Suited for clocking your miles in those long runs, this versatile pair can also be used in recovery runs, or up tempo runs with its generally cushioned profile great for days your feet feel beaten up. Some have even worn them out for lifestyle activities simply because they are very comfortable and look stylish at the same time. Shannon provides her insights into three key features of the New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v13 , followed by her own personal experience with the pair of shoes. Just how exactly do the features of the Fresh Foam X 1080v13   benefit runners? Read on to find out more! PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG New Fresh Foam X Midsole The midsole is the stand-out feature of these shoes as it incorporates the new Fresh Foam X technology. The soft Fresh Foam X midsole provides more cushioning without increasing overall weight. A lot of the shoe’s benefits can be attributed to the comfort and softness that the Fresh Foam X midsole provides. Measuring 35mm in the rearfoot and 29mm in the forefoot, these shoes have an offset of 6mm. Although it’s a pretty consistent stack height across other New Balance trainers, a lower drop makes this a pretty safe shoe that is less aggressive, making this a neutral shoe that caters to a wider group of runners, regardless of running styles. Shannon says, “The cushion is crazy, it feels like you are walking or running on clouds because the cushion pretty much spans the entire length of the sole.” One of the challenges of running shoes is that you need to strike a good balance between energy return and cushioning. While some shoes provide very good energy return, they may end up being too stiff, causing runners to suffer – especially after running long distances.  In the case of the Fresh Foam X 1080v13 , these shoes retain some level of energy return and with its softness, you can wear them for both your daily miles or long runs. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 2. Cooling and Breathable Knit Upper  The shoe boasts a comfortable and snug fit, thanks to its breathable knit upper and padded heel collar. A gusseted tongue adds to the plush feel and remains firmly in position, supported by a lace loop for added security.  With ample padding in the heel collar, the shoe exudes a luxurious softness. Its breathable engineered mesh upper offers a structured, supportive feel akin to a second skin. “I want to highlight that because of this material, during the runs, it's not so hot. Normally when I run with shoes that are not as good in quality, I feel my feet heating up and it just gets very uncomfortable. I don't get that problem with these shoes when I run long distances,” Shannon shares.“The shoes are great, super light, super comfortable! The heel collar is super soft so you never get blisters. I also like the fact that it's cooling.” When running, there can be a lot of friction that builds up in the shoe. This results in more heat being trapped which can feel uncomfortable for runners. With an upper that is breathable and cooling, less heat is trapped in the shoe, ensuring a consistently comfortable and pleasant run. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG 3. Grippy Outsole The outsole utilises rubber material in strategic areas to enhance durability and traction. This provides reliable grip on various surfaces, ensuring confidence and stability during runs on roads or trails. As mentioned, the outsole provides additional stiffness at the forefoot area, allowing runners to expect a better toe-off when starting their runs. Runners need not worry about slipping in these shoes. The outsole is durable enough to withstand different terrains such as grass, concrete and smoother tiles. It was evident to Shannon that the grippiness fulfilled a crucial and practical role within the shoe. “The grippiness is great. I ran in the shoes after it rained on different kinds of surfaces like concrete and other terrains. I haven't slipped once even when turning sharp corners while running at fast speeds. Although this can be dangerous, I feel safe as the shoe is super, super grippy!” Shannon reflected, praising the grippiness of the Fresh Foam X 1080v13 . PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG My Personal Running Experience As a fitness influencer, Shannon has more experience with flatter shoes as they are more suitable for strength training in the gym. However, transitioning into the shape of the Fresh Foam X 1080v13 was easy for her as she prioritises cushioning and comfort in a pair of running shoes.  Shannon says, “After clocking mileage in the pair, my favourite part of the shoe is the cushioning. I think I am someone who forgets that I'm not supposed to put so much pressure when landing on my feet. This is why the cushioning helps a lot. As runners, one of the most common experiences we know of is getting shin splints which happens when they constantly put a lot of pressure on their legs. I have been running for months and I have not gotten any shin splints. Cushioning is number one!”  PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG As part of New Balance’s ‘Run Your Way’ campaign, an initiative aimed at celebrating individuality, diversity, and personal expression within the running community. The campaign emphasises the idea that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to running and encourages runners to embrace their unique styles, preferences, and motivations. Shannon believes that the Fresh Foam X 1080 offers a unique combination of comfort and high performance – which allows for a seamless transition for runners to go from an everyday trainer to their race day shoes. • Choosing the Right Daily Trainers for Your Marathon Training: Sole Mates [Episode 22]

Travel influencer and running content creator Daniel Fang is the latest guest on set as he discusses his favourite daily trainers for marathon training for the Sydney Marathon PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs.  As part of this series, SportPlus.sg   has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. Known for his travel and lifestyle content and looking to travel to 193 countries, Daniel Fang   only recently started his running journey in the last couple of years.  One  of the highlights of his running journey was no doubt the Sydney Marathon in 2023, a race which he claimed his personal best against the odds. The traveller-turned-runner now shares his running content all over his social media platforms and has since joined over 5 marathons to date. With a variety of options on the running shoes market, it's easy to get lost in a sea of noise when it comes to choosing the right pair of daily trainers for your marathon training. Here, we attempt to help you break down key things to consider when purchasing your next daily trainer to add to your running shoe rotation. Daniel shares his thoughts on a few of his favourite daily trainers in the lead up to the 2024 Sydney Marathon, and highlights what he usually looks out for in his running shoes. “A good trainer should last very long and feel comfortable at the same time. I usually rotate between two or three pairs. One with a good foam for my usual and regular runs. However, I also need one that is slightly plated for faster runs but also not too aggressive for my tempo runs,” says Daniel, in reference to having a shoe rotation for the different types of runs executed in a marathon training block. When it comes to training for a marathon, Daniel’s foremost priority in a daily trainer is one that does not cause blisters or any hot spots. This can be subjective and varies from runner to runner depending on your running gait. He adds, “Training in Singapore's weather is really humid and I sweat very heavily to the point where my feet tend to get wet. If the shoe is too hot, my feet will get blisters. For example, if I run a 35km distance for training, I will get blisters. Therefore, I will usually look for a trainer that has a breathability mesh in the upper and one that doesn't trap heat.” While the term "daily trainer" is widely used, these days there is a broad category in which such shoes fall under - with each serving a different purposes. Here, Daniel provides his thoughts on the ASICS Novablast 4 , adidas Supernova Rise , HOKA Mach 6 and the Nike Pegasus 40 . These renowned models in the running scene are already widely used by many, but just what exactly sets them apart? Does each shoe perform differently for different runs? Read on to find out more. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG ASICS NOVABLAST 4 The ASICS NOVABLAST 4 is renowned for its responsive cushioning, making it an ideal choice for neutral runners in search of a plush and bouncy ride. This shoe boasts excellent energy return, providing runners with a comfortable feel while prioritising cushioning and responsiveness. The shoe's upper is expertly engineered with breathable mesh, ensuring optimal ventilation and a ‘snug’ fit for enhanced comfort and support during runs.  With its highest stack height overall as compared to other 3 daily trainers, the shoe measures 42mm in the rearfoot and 34mm in the forefoot. This results in an overall drop of 8mm. The NOVABLAST 4 offers a plush and cushioned experience that stands out among other daily trainers. Daniel says, “I'm a superfan of the NOVABLAST. It can even double up as a race shoe in some sense. The foam is not too soft but there is sufficient cushioning. It gives a little bit of aggression. It is great as a daily trainer and also a racing shoe.” Additionally, the ASICS NOVABLAST 4 stands as a versatile pair that transcends the boundaries of a typical daily trainer. Its adaptability and plush cushioning makes it the most luxurious option among daily trainers, appealing to runners who value both comfort and versatility in their  footwear. Whether you're logging miles at a steady pace or picking up the speed for faster runs, the NOVABLAST 4 can be considered as a performance daily trainer suitable for both everyday runs and more uptempo sessions.  You can read up on our in-depth review of the NOVABLAST 4 here . adidas Supernova Rise The adidas Supernova Rise , released in December 2023, is meticulously designed for daily training. Offering a harmonious blend of cushioning and support, this iteration of the Supernova franchise features a redesigned silhouette. adidas also incorporates its proprietary Dreamstrike+ technology into the midsole, utilising re-engineered super foam to provide a responsive and comfortable feel with each stride. Furthermore, the adidas Supernova Rise is equipped with stability features, making it particularly suitable for runners who overpronate mildly or require additional support during their runs. The shoe's system of denser foam has ‘Support Rods’ that promote smoother transitions from heel to toe. Additionally, the Supernova Rise boasts a comfortable heel fit that combines cushy foam and soft textile materials, creating a secure fit around the heel. This is one unique feature of the Supernova Rise ! Host John says, “One of the main differences in the Supernova rise as compared to the previous editions is the more secure lockdown. It is also a lot more comfortable and feels soft around the heel collar area. Moreover, the padded tongue adds to the comfort. A good pair to consider for runs ranging from 10 km to 12 km runs.”   With its balanced combination of cushioning, support, and innovative features, the adidas Supernova Rise stands out as a reliable option for daily training and enjoyable running sessions. Measuring 36mm in the rearfoot and 26mm in the forefoot, the shoe has an overall offset of 10mm. Ultimately, the Supernova Rise is good for easy runs or recovery runs at comfortable paces. “As part of any marathon training blocks, There are very different runs you need for the entire week not just tempo or long runs, but anywhere between your medium runs and progressions runs as well. The supernova rise is a good pair to consider for that.” adds John. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG HOKA Mach 6 The HOKA Mach 6 is a lightweight and versatile shoe meticulously designed for tempo runs, interval training, and even racing. With its balanced combination of responsiveness and cushioning, the Mach 6 delivers a fast yet comfortable ride that caters to runners seeking both speed and support.  Crafted with lightweight materials, the shoe prioritises breathability and also offers a snug fit, enhancing overall comfort and performance during various running activities. Despite having a lower heel-to-toe drop compared to the other running shoes, the Mach 6 stands out for its plush and bouncy feel, setting it apart from its predecessor, the Hoka Mach 5. This makes it a preferred choice for uptempo runs, fartlegs, and interval training sessions. “I wore the Clifton 9, the high stack regular training shoes, it's pretty good. What I love about HOKA is the stack height in most of its shoes. It gives you very good cushioning, it's comfortable for long runs and provides good stability too.” shares Daniel on his experience after using the Clifton 9. In addition to its performance-driven design, the Hoka Mach 6 is often likened to the Nike Pegasus 40 but distinguishes itself by being even more lightweight. The shoe's stack height further underscores its versatility, with the rearfoot measuring 37mm, the forefoot measuring 32mm, and an overall offset of 5mm.  This configuration ensures that the Mach 6 is suitable for clocking daily miles and engaging in tempo training, providing runners with the responsiveness, cushioning, and lightweight design they need to excel in various running endeavours. Whether you're pushing the pace during speed workouts or maintaining consistent training mileage, the Hoka Mach 6 offers the ideal combination of features to support your running goals. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Nike Pegasus 40 The Nike Pegasus 40 stands out with its innovative features tailored to enhance the running experience. At its core, the shoe incorporates Nike React foam cushioning in the midsole, delivering a unique blend of responsiveness and durability that caters to runners seeking reliable cushioning.  This foam technology is complemented by two Air Zoom pods strategically placed in the forefoot and rearfoot, further enhancing the shoe's overall responsiveness and providing a dynamic feel with each stride. The Pegasus 40's neutral platform design makes it suitable for a wide range of runners, offering a balanced combination of cushioning and support that ensures smooth transitions during runs. Daniel says, “For the pegasus, I think it is like an all-rounder shoe, so I could even use it for the gym. It is very stable, there is sufficient cushioning for easy runs ranging from 5k to 10k. I think it is pretty versatile in that sense as you can use it for many different situations.” Additionally, the Nike Pegasus 40 is recognized for its lightweight and breathable upper, engineered with materials that prioritise comfort and support. While it may not be the top choice for long-distance runs due to its design focus on daily miles and uptempo runs, the Pegasus 40 remains a popular choice among runners of all levels for its reliable cushioning and smooth transitions.  “Good for short distance runs and short distance tempo runs,” adds Daniel, referring to the types of runs he thinks the pair is suited for.   The shoe's stack height further reflects its versatile nature, with the rearfoot measuring 33mm, the forefoot measuring 23mm, giving the shoes an offset of 10mm. Ultimately, the Pegasus 40 is suitable for daily training, long-distance runs, and even some speed work, making it a versatile option that can adapt to various training needs and preferences. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Are Daily Trainer Stability Shoes For Consideration? All four pairs are neutral shoes. Stability shoes are protective shoes to help runners with their running gait. Depending on a runner’s pronation, stability shoes help runners stabilise their running form to help prevent injuries. “Two models of daily trainers that are considered as stability shoes that you may want to consider are GEL-KAYANO 30 and the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13 ,” recommends John. The GEL-KAYANO 30 incorporates a 4D guiding system which is essentially an advanced take on stabilising the foot based on biomechanical research. The shoe has a medial foam unit that helps provide adaptive, on-demand stability to help your arch return to the appropriate position for the next footstrike. The New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13 combines the pinnacle cushioning experience of Fresh Foam X with a supportive medial post to provide essential stability. The supportive medial post helps to control pronation. Such features are what sets these models apart as stability shoes! PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG All in all, how exactly do you decide which shoe is right for you? Ultimately, it depends on your individual preferences and needs. Whether you're a beginner looking for cushioning, a long-distance runner in need of support, or a speed enthusiast seeking responsiveness, there's a daily trainer out there for you. Even if you’re looking for stability shoes, there are versatile pairs that also cater to your needs. Having discussed the shoes in-depth, would any of these pairs be your very next ‘Sole Mate’? • ANTA G21 3 Review: Sole Mates [Episode 24]

A higher-cushioned neutral shoe designed for distance and durability, the ANTA G21 3 is value for money as a well rounded shoe, says marathoner Desmond Ang PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG "Sole Mates" is a series made by runners created for runners, and a SportPlus.sg initiative to help you find the right running footwear for you and your runs. As part of this series, SportPlus.sg has teamed up with local running content creators, Key Opinion Leaders and athletes to have them share their thoughts on the latest running footwear. There is always a first for everything, and having seen more runners in Singapore wear ANTA shoes recently, SportPlus.sg was privileged to take a deep dive into the new ANTA G21 3 daily trainers with marathoner Desmond Ang (@unbelievaboy) , and ask him his first impressions of the shoe. The G21 series is part of the lineup from ANTA, a Chinese sportswear brand that's been making strides in the global market. Specifically, the G21 series is known for its versatility as a daily trainer. The G21 3 is a higher-cushioned neutral shoe designed for distance and durability. So how does this daily trainer compare to other shoes in the same price bracket? PHOTO: KYLE FLORES, ANTA SINGAPORE First Impressions Desmond : "I have a sensing that it is quite versatile, when I slip my feet into these shoes it feels light, it feels slightly bouncier so I said 'alright let's have some fun with it." "We did an easy run with a quite a few stops, quite a bit of side-stepping as it was a busy area in the CBD and surprisingly it responded well to quite a lot of different pace, terrain pick-ups, different rhythms of running. Shoe Specs Stack Height for ANTA G21 3 Rearfoot: 31.5mm Forefoot: 23.5mm Offset: 8mm PHOTO: KYLE FLORES, ANTA SINGAPORE Upper XIAN FIBRE : Breathable mesh upper is expertly designed to provide ventilation and support. This innovative weave not only keeps your feet cool and comfortable but also ensures a secure fit for optimal performance. Desmond : "I'm not sure how the tech adds to the stability of the shoe per se, but when I ran in it, it definitely didn't feel unstable especially when I'm turning or cornering around sharp turns. Heel wise there isn't any specific cushioning there but it did not slip, it doesn't feel too tight, it doesn't feel like I have too much room in my toes or anything like that. Midsole NITROEDGE - Featuring full-length dual-density nitrogen-infused foam, offer both comfort and stability. Designed for a perfect balance of durability and cushioning Desmond : "It felt light, there was a little bit of pop - not quite like super shoes, but just a little bit. You kind of forget about the shoes as you run, you don't really think of the little details that are there, which I think is quite positive." MIDFOOT SHANK - Minimizes energy loss and provides stability for a smoother transition from heel to toe Desmond : "So far I am really excited to bring this out for different kind of paces, so maybe some fartleks or even some tempo runs, where I can cruise at a relatively fast pace. However I think that it can definitely go long. Yesterday I did a 17km run, it didn't feel like I needed to worry about it if I were to go for another 5km or even 10km more." PHOTO: KYLE FLORES, ANTA SINGAPORE Outsole Durable rubber outsole - These shoes come with a max-coverage rubber outsole and shallow lugs that provide solid grip on smooth surfaces, thanks to their micro-textured pattern Desmond : "Yesterday when I started my run, the rain had already subsided but the ground was still wet. The shoes are grippy, the entire outsole is filled with this rubber - and it works. It is as grippy as it looks." photo: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Comfort and Fit Cushioning : The G21 typically uses Anta's proprietary cushioning technology, which offers a good balance between responsiveness and shock absorption. The cushioning is designed to provide comfort for long periods of wear, making it suitable for daily training. Fit: The fit is generally true to size with a standard width. It offers good support around the midfoot and heel, which is beneficial for stability during various activities. PHOTO: KYLE FLORES, ANTA SINGAPORE Durability Materials : The materials used in the G21 are generally high-quality, offering a good balance of flexibility and durability. The upper is often made from breathable mesh or engineered knit to enhance comfort and longevity. Construction : The shoe’s construction is robust, though, as with any trainer, the lifespan can vary depending on the frequency of use and the types of surfaces you run on. Design Aesthetics: The G21 typically sports a modern design with sleek lines and a variety of colour options. It blends well with both athletic wear and casual outfits. PHOTO: KYLE FLORES, ANTA SINGAPORE Pros 1.Good cushioning and comfort for daily wear. 2.Solid support and stability for training. 3.Durable construction and reliable traction. 4.Modern design with a range of color options. Cons 1.Might be a bit heavier compared to some minimalist or racing shoes. 2. The fit might not be ideal for everyone, particularly those with very narrow or very wide feet. PHOTO: KYLE FLORES, ANTA SINGAPORE Overall, the Anta G21 is a well-rounded daily trainer that offers comfort, support, and durability for a range of activities. It’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a versatile shoe that performs well in various training scenarios. • Can a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Boost Your Recovery and Endurance?

Discover how HBOT is transforming performance and recovery for everyday athletes in Singapore PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR In the world of competitive sports and active lifestyles, the quest for faster recovery and improved endurance never stops. One cutting-edge therapy gaining traction among elite and everyday athletes alike is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) . Over the weekend, Team SportPlus athletes visited Performance Bike Fitter’s sport science lab to experience HBOT firsthand—and the results are promising. Now, this advanced recovery tool is becoming more accessible for athletes across Singapore. Here’s everything you need to know about HBOT and how it could elevate your athletic performance. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. Inside, the atmospheric pressure is increased to 1.5 to 3 times higher than normal. This allows your lungs to absorb significantly more oxygen, which is then transported throughout your body via the bloodstream. More oxygen means enhanced tissue repair, reduced inflammation, and accelerated recovery—making HBOT an increasingly popular tool in sports medicine. PHOTO: SAMUEL CHUA The Science Behind HBOT and Athletic Performance So how does HBOT impact performance? The core benefit lies in oxygen saturation. When exposed to higher oxygen levels, your red blood cells can deliver more oxygen to muscles and organs. This helps: Reduce muscle fatigue Accelerate lactic acid breakdown Improve mitochondrial efficiency Enhance collagen production for soft tissue repair PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Athletes who engage in high-intensity training or back-to-back competitions often struggle with chronic soreness and muscle fatigue. HBOT addresses this by flooding tissues with oxygen, jumpstarting healing processes and reducing the time needed between sessions. In scientific studies, HBOT has shown potential to improve VO2 max, decrease muscle damage markers like creatine kinase, and reduce DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). Endurance Recovery and Real-World Benefits After testing HBOT this past weekend, Team SportPlus athletes reported noticeable improvements in post-training recovery. Their visit to the Performance Bike Fitter’s sport science lab allowed them to integrate HBOT into their recovery regime, and early feedback highlighted: Faster muscle recovery after endurance rides Improved sleep quality post-treatment Reduced leg soreness and stiffness PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR These results aren’t just anecdotal. HBOT has been used by professional athletes in cycling, football, and even mixed martial arts for years. Now, with local facilities like Performance Bike Fitter offering sessions in Singapore, everyday athletes finally have access to this premium recovery method. Who Should Use HBOT and When? HBOT isn't just for elite athletes. It can benefit: Endurance athletes training for marathons, triathlons, or Ironman races Weekend warriors looking to reduce soreness after long rides or runs Injured athletes recovering from muscle strains, tendonitis, or overuse injuries CrossFit or HIIT participants who need faster recovery between sessions The best time to use HBOT? Within 24 to 48 hours after intense physical activity or an endurance event. It’s also ideal for active recovery days, helping your body heal while you rest. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR HBOT in Singapore—Now Within Reach Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is no longer just for Olympians or top-tier pros. With cutting-edge labs like Performance Bike Fitter offering HBOT sessions locally, Singapore’s endurance and team-sport athletes can now reap the benefits too. Whether you're chasing a personal best or aiming to recover smarter, consider integrating HBOT into your performance toolkit—just like Team SportPlus did. Ready to experience HBOT for yourself? Visit Performance Bike Fitter's sport science lab to explore how this game-changing recovery method can support your training journey. #HBOT #HyberbaricOxygenTherapy #SportsScience #PerformanceBikeFitter

It was, however, not meant to be for The Sailors as they ultimately fell to Sharjah FC 2-1 at the death, and were forced to finish as runners up. The trophy was anyone's for the taking for majority of the match, with it being a fairly equally contested game up until the 74th minute. A well played ball over the top found Khaled Ibrahim at the far post, who slid in to tap the ball across to Firas Ben Larbi. With Izwan Mahbud caught out, Ben Larbi tapped it into the net to break the deadlock with only 15 minutes left to go. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Izwan then kept his side in the game, diving across at full stretch to parry away Marcus Meloni's attempt on goal from a well-taken free kick. Then, Bishan Stadium erupted as the amount of additional time was announced. 11 minutes. With the fans pushing The Sailors on, Sharjah's defence began to waver as the home side began huffing and puffing. Eventually—it all paid off, and it was none other than Maxime Lestienne who launched Bishan Stadium into a frenzy. In the first minute of added time, the Belgian latched onto a delivery from Diogo Costa and drilled it past Adel Al Hosani, resetting the battle for the trophy back to level terms. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Now with newfound confidence and adrenaline, Bishan Stadium was at its loudest—and to say that the fans were in delirium would almost be an understatement. But it all came crashing down just five minutes later, as Sharjah's Meloni delivered a shot too powerful, ending the dream of a Singaporean team winning its first ever continental trophy. Though a chance presented itself at the very last minute of added time, The Sailors were unable to capitalise on a scramble in the box, and it was eventually cleared away by Sharjah's defenders. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Nevertheless, The Sailors has created history time and time again during the entire duration of their brave ACL Two campaign, the fans’ unwavering adoration was on display as the players embarked on their lap of honour, even in the face of defeat. It was a reminder that, despite the result, this was a night to be proud of for many—and one forever etched into Singapore football history. • 5 Benefits of Hypoxic Conditioning for Competitive Athletes

Participating in a marathon, triathlon or other endurace races? Find out how to incorporate hypoxic training into your training plan, and unlock the power of low-oxygen training for peak performance PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Hypoxic training , or training in a low-oxygen environment, is gaining serious traction among competitive athletes aiming to push their performance boundaries. By simulating high altitude conditions, this method has become a go-to for improving endurance and enhancing VO2 max levels. Here are five key benefits of hypoxic conditioning for athletes. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR 1. Enhanced VO2 Max Training in a hypoxic environment stimulates the body to adapt by improving oxygen utilisation. This leads to increases in VO2 max, which directly boosts endurance capacity and aerobic performance. 2. Improved Mitochondrial Efficiency Hypoxic training forces the body to become more efficient at producing energy under stress. This improves mitochondrial density and function, giving athletes an edge during prolonged efforts. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR 3. Boosted Red Blood Cell Production Just like training at high altitude, hypoxic conditioning triggers the production of erythropoietin (EPO), leading to an increase in red blood cell count. More red blood cells mean better oxygen transport and delivery to working muscles. 4. Increased Lactate Threshold By consistently training in low-oxygen settings, athletes can raise their lactate threshold, enabling them to perform at higher intensities for longer periods. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR 5. Improved Mental Toughness Training under physically demanding, oxygen-limited conditions builds not only physical resilience but also mental fortitude—key traits in competitive sports. Inside the Lab: High Altitude Testing on the Treadmill and Stationary Bike At Performance Bike Fitter's sports science lab in Singapore, athletes now have the opportunity to undergo high altitude testing protocols in a controlled, measurable environment. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Whether it’s on a treadmill or a stationary bike, these tests simulate altitude conditions to assess how an athlete’s body responds to low-oxygen stress. Team SportPlus athletes explored what it's like to put through this advanced form of endurance testing, allowing them to fine-tune their training based on their unique physiological responses. These lab-controlled hypoxic sessions offer a safe and data-rich environment to measure adaptation and performance limits. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR Hypoxic Training Benefits Beyond Elite Athletes One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the accessibility of this cutting-edge technology to everyday athletes. You no longer need to be an Olympian to benefit from VO2 enhancement or altitude simulation. Whether you're training for your first triathlon or looking to shave minutes off your marathon time, hypoxic conditioning can deliver tangible gains. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR At Performance Bike Fitter , athletes can integrate hypoxic training into a broader sports science program that includes VO2 max testing, metabolic profiling, bike fitting, and more. Push your limits with science on your side. Book your hypoxic conditioning session at Performance Bike Fitter and explore how training at altitude can transform your performance. #HypoxicTraining #Hypoxia #AltitudeTraining #SportsScience
