  • Gold Coast Marathon 2025 Preview: Where Running Builds a Home - Run.JPG's GC SKWAD

Meet Run.JPG's GC SKWAD, a running group turned family, sharing blood, sweat and tears as they gear up for the Gold Coast Marathon 2025 in July PHOTO VIA HIBSHAMIR IBRAHIM Once considered a lonely sport, running has since shed that reputation. Today, it’s where many find a sense of belonging—a home away from home. With the ASICS Gold Coast Marathon now on the horizon, Jolly Pace Group —better known as Run.JPG—is in full swing preparing for race day. Founded in 2019, the group recently formed a dedicated subgroup aptly called the GC SKWAD.  What began as a solo goal for Run.JPG co-founder Hibshamir Ibrahim —to qualify for the Boston Marathon through his timing at the Gold Coast Marathon—soon grew into something much bigger: a tight-knit group that some GC SKWAD members now proudly call family. Now about 20 runners strong, it's the camaraderie and shared commitment among the Gold Coast-bound group that has carried them this far since signing up for the marathon. PHOTO VIA HIBSHAMIR IBRAHIM “I realised how much support the JPG community has been giving me virtually throughout my major races. That inspired me to bring that energy offline and create an opportunity for others. So, I thought, why not bring a group down to Gold Coast Marathon, an event where everyone has a great chance to achieve a personal record? That’s how the GC SKWAD was born,” he shared. “Everyone pushes each other, and there’s this friendly “baiting" that happens where people encourage one another to take on challenges they might not have considered before, like running a full marathon. Training together, sharing the journey, and crossing the finish line makes the experience way more meaningful.” What makes them even more admirable is that, for most of the squad, the Gold Coast Marathon will either be their first full 42.2km race or their first overseas run. Hibshamir—better known as Hibs—has been spearheading the group’s logistics, training programs, and overall experience, a responsibility he considers an honour. For the first-timers, staying disciplined and juggling between training, work, and well—life, has all been a challenge, but the shared goal of crossing that finish line has above all, brought unity. PHOTO VIA HIBSHAMIR IBRAHIM “It’s been tiring, but everyone’s showing up not just for themselves, but for each other. It’s about the friendships, the discipline, and the collective energy that’s built around a single purpose,” he gushed about the squad. “Over the last few months, the bonding and shared experiences have naturally built a strong kampung feeling within the group. Checking in on each other’s progress, encouraging one another, and sharing both struggles and wins has become part of our routine.” Priscilla Chan , who is part of the GC SKWAD, shared the same sentiments as her teammate. An avid runner, Priscilla is no stranger to overseas marathons, and even has a few World Marathon Majors in the bag, but nothing has created an impact on her quite like the GC SKWAD . PHOTO: RUN.JPG / KYLE FLORES “For sure, it’s created such a strong sense of community! It honestly feels like more than just any other running group. It feels like home and they feel like a family.” “Honestly, having a community makes a huge difference when you're training for an endurance sport. It keeps you motivated, makes the tough days easier, and just reminds you that you’re not in it alone. It’s way more fun doing it with people who get what you’re going through.” PHOTO: RUN.JPG / KYLE FLORES And once it’s all said and done, the GC SKWAD are all set for a well-deserved celebration in Surfer’s Paradise. With run-cations becoming the latest trend, there are few better places in the world to celebrate post-marathon than the golden shores of the Gold Coast . Sure, it may be a race set in the Australian winter, but that’s not stopping the GC SKWAD from looking forward to visiting the various beaches dotted along the coast. After all, how often do Singaporeans get the chance to splash around in the ocean? “I know it’s going to be cold, but I can’t wait to go to the beach after the race. I just love the beach. I’m also hoping to do some cafe hopping—and maybe even go skydiving if there’s time,” shared Priscilla excitedly. PHOTO VIA HIBSHAMIR IBRAHIM Similarly, Hibs will be looking to make the most of the Pacific coast to recharge, after close to three years of chasing his goal. “Since we’re overseas, we’re treating this trip not just as a race, but also as a bit of a retreat, a chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy some downtime with the group. It’s important to balance all the hard work with some quality rest and fun moments together before heading back refreshed and ready for the next challenge,” he explained. “We're really excited about the whole race experience and the activities happening throughout the week. I want to make sure the GC SKWAD runners get to fully immerse themselves in the race week atmosphere just like I’ve always experienced in other races. It’s about more than just the marathon day, it’s the build-up, bridging the gap with other crews, and all the moments that make the trip unforgettable.” All slots for the full and half marathons, 10KM and 5KM have sold out, but runners can still enter via charity slots. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR For many, this year’s edition wasn’t just about medals — it was about milestones. Erin Ong achieved her half-marathon personal best with a time of 1:57:09 in her first overseas race, and crossed the finish line in tears of joy. “It was really great, the weather was really good. The vibes were really good, there were cheer zones all the way from 10km onwards, I think this is the race that I enjoyed the most so far. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR "If you really want to get your PB, this is the place to be! The weather is really good too and the course is flat which makes it a good place to race." Priscilla Chan of local run group Run.JPG shared that though it was a tough day on the course for her, it was a meaningful experience for her as she came with friends. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR "My race experience today was pretty painful, but it was fun also because I am here with a group of friends. I would definitely recommend first full marathon experience, for anyone who wishes to try - Gold Coast would be the place to come." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR First time marathoners Shannon Chong and Jonathan Wui of Fast and Free Run Club (FFRC) , raved about their maiden marathon experience, telling SportPlus.sg : Shannon shared: "It is my first full marathon and the vibes were just so good. People were offering water from their own houses, gummy bears, and I think the huge factor is really the weather because you'd never get this weather in Singapore. For our first full marathon? 10 out of 10." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR "People were cheering from their houses, loudspeakers and all that, the vibes were really on point," nodded Jonathan in agreement. "Running 42km is really no joke, but the option is always open to come back and do Gold Coast Marathon again." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR “This course is magic. Flat, fast, and with so much support on the sidelines—I shaved nearly 10 minutes off my previous time. I couldn’t be happier!” From the full marathon to the 10km, Singaporean runners could be seen soaking in the camaraderie, cheering each other on in English, Singlish, and a chorus of dialects. Many flew in as part of local running clubs and communities, with pre-race dinners and post-race beach gatherings giving the event a warm, communal vibe. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Another heartwarming story came from best friends Shafiq and Rachel, who took on the half marathon together. “We signed up on a whim last year, trained every weekend, and came here to finish strong. Today, we did it—hand in hand across the finish line,” said Rachel. The 45th anniversary edition of the Gold Coast Marathon proved once again why it remains a favorite among international runners. With its scenic coastal route, impeccable organisation, and festive spirit, it continues to attract participants year after year—and for the Singaporean runners who made the journey in 2025, it was nothing short of unforgettable. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR As many of them said with tired legs and full hearts: “We’ll be back.” Stay up to date on the latest Gold Coast Marathon stories and news in our GCM microsite here . #GCM25 #RunGoldCoast #GoldCoastMarathon

The Run Club, which will operate on Tuesday evenings and on one Saturday a month, is offering free, structured, performance-focused run club designed for runners who desire more than just casual running and want to achieve their personal best. PHOTO: PUMA SINGAPORE The announcement came as part of a bigger release by the global sportswear giant, which kicked off its 2025 campaign with the release of the ‘Go Wild’ hero film, a tribute to runners unlocking the runner’s high – a rush of happy chemicals released during physical activity - aligning with a positive audience response in this space and rooted in the belief that running is at its best when you chase the runner’s high. PHOTO: PUMA SINGAPORE The ‘Go Wild’ film moves away from featuring athletes and celebrities – and instead celebrates the everyday runner, including the early-rising runners, a runner with their dog, a new mum, or running as a community – all of them making choices staying true to themselves chasing the high of a run. PHOTO: PUMA SINGAPORE Unleashing Greatness in Singapore Bringing the ‘Go Wild’ vision to life in Singapore, PUMA is investing in the next generation of runners with the signings of top tier distance athletes earlier this year, as well as through a rebrand of its PUMA NITRO Run Club, offering structured training programmes and access to top-tier athletes to help everyday runners reach their full potential. • TCS Sydney Marathon 2025: Sifan Hassan Smashes Course Record in Historic Abbott World Marathon Majors Debut

Dutch Olympic Champion Runs 2:18:22 to Secure Third Major Title in Sydney Sifan Hassan breaks the Sydney Marathon course record en route to clinching the win. PHOTO: WORLD MARATHON MAJORS Sydney, 1 September 2025 – Dutch running superstar Sifan Hassan produced a sensational performance at the TCS Sydney Marathon 2025 , storming to victory in a course record time of 2:18:22. The triumph marked Sydney’s first-ever staging as part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) series, and Hassan ensured it was a debut to remember with her third Major title. The 32-year-old Olympic gold medallist added Sydney to her previous wins in London and Chicago, underlining her dominance across the global marathon circuit. Instead of contesting the Athletics World Championships, Hassan opted for this landmark race in Australia — a decision that paid off handsomely as she outpaced an elite field. Hassan Holds Nerve to Outkick Brigid Kosgei Hassan’s race strategy was calm and calculated, staying composed throughout before launching her decisive move between the 35km and 40km marks. She powered away from former world record-holder Brigid Kosgei , defeating the Kenyan star by 34 seconds. Kosgei, who had been Hassan’s closest challenger, settled for second place, while Ethiopia’s Workenesh Edesa , the defending Sydney champion, claimed third. A Star On and Off the Roads Hassan has been in sparkling form all week, winning over the Australian public with her charm and humor during media appearances. On race day, she matched her off-track charisma with a display of tactical brilliance, delivering a victory free of the late-race dramas that have characterized some of her earlier marathon wins. Her 2:18:22 finish not only set a new Sydney Marathon course record, but also cemented her reputation as one of the most versatile and dominant distance runners of her generation. Hailemaryam Kiros secured his first AWMM victory.   PHOTO: WORLD MARATHON MAJORS Men’s Race: Ethiopia Dominates with Another Course Record While Hassan stole the headlines in the women’s race, the men’s marathon produced its own drama. Ethiopian duo Hailemaryam Kiros and Addisu Gobena battled neck and neck until the closing stages. Kiros surged ahead in the final two kilometers, crossing the line in 2:06:06, another Sydney Marathon course record, to clinch victory. Gobena followed 10 seconds later, while Tebello Ramakongoana of Lesotho rounded out the podium in 2:06:47. Kipchoge Fades as Next Generation Emerges Legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge , at 40 years old, could not keep pace with the leading pack, ultimately fighting to stay inside the top 10. His performance signaled a potential changing of the guard as younger stars like Kiros and Gobena rose to the occasion. Sydney’s Place on the Global Marathon Map The 2025 edition of the TCS Sydney Marathon will go down in history as the city’s first inclusion in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series — joining Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo. With course records in both men’s and women’s races, Sydney’s debut cemented its place as a world-class destination for elite marathon running. #SydneyMarathon #WorldMarathonMajors

  • VO2 Max Test Explained: Why It’s the Gold Standard for Measuring Endurance and Where to Do VO2 Max Test in Singapore

Looking to do a VO2 Max Test in Singapore? Find out how to unlock peak performance through science-backed endurance testing PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR When it comes to understanding and improving endurance performance, few metrics are as telling or as valuable as VO2 max . Known as the "gold standard" in endurance testing, VO2 max provides deep insights into an athlete’s cardiovascular capacity and overall aerobic fitness. With advanced sports science now more accessible than ever, VO2 max testing isn't just for elite athletes—everyday endurance enthusiasts can benefit too. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR What is VO2 Max? VO2 max , or maximal oxygen uptake, refers to the maximum volume of oxygen that your body can utilise during intense exercise. Measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min), this metric reflects how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles work together to sustain prolonged physical activity. Scientifically speaking, the higher your VO2 max, the more oxygen your body can transport and use for energy production during endurance efforts. This makes it a critical indicator of aerobic capacity and cardiovascular health. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Why VO2 Max Matters to Athletes Whether you're a seasoned marathoner, a triathlete, or a weekend cyclist, knowing your VO2 max can unlock new levels of training precision and performance potential. For endurance athletes, a higher VO2 max generally translates to improved stamina, quicker recovery, and more efficient energy use during long-duration efforts. Team SportPlus athletes are embracing VO2 max testing as a fundamental part of their training regimes. By identifying their current aerobic thresholds, the team's athletes can tailor workouts that push performance boundaries while reducing the risk of overtraining. What to Expect During a VO2 Max Test VO2 max testing typically involves graded exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike, where intensity is increased incrementally. Athletes wear a face mask connected to a metabolic cart that analyzes breathing gases in real time, measuring oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. The test continues until voluntary exhaustion or the point where oxygen uptake plateaus, despite increased effort. Heart rate, ventilation, and other physiological data are also collected, offering a comprehensive view of an individual’s aerobic function. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Applying VO2 Max Data to Real-World Training Once you have your VO2 max results, the real magic begins. Coaches and sports scientists can use the data to: Determine training zones for aerobic and anaerobic workouts Track progress over time with repeat testing Identify strengths and weaknesses in endurance performance Design periodised training plans that align with personal goals and race calendars With this level of insight, athletes can train smarter—not just harder. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG   / HANA BASIR Accessible Sports Science in Singapore for Everyone VO2 max testing is no longer confined to Olympic labs or pro cycling teams. Thanks to facilities like Performance Bike Fitter in Singapore, everyday athletes now have access to world-class sports science services. Alongside expert bike fitting, the team offers VO2 max testing and other physiological assessments that can elevate any athlete's training, regardless of experience level. Whether you're chasing a personal best or simply aiming to improve your health and fitness, understanding your VO2 max is a powerful step forward. Ready to unlock your potential? • PUMA Velocity NITRO™ 4 Review: A Refined Daily Trainer That Quietly Impresses - Sole Mates [Episode 28]

Why the PUMA Velocity NITRO™ 4 Stands Out in a Crowded Daily Trainer Market PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG / HANA BASIR 🎧 This review is part of our ongoing running shoe spotlight series on the Sport Plus Media podcast — "Sole Mates". In this episode, we’re joined by special guest Jacky Ong, head coach of the PUMA Nitro Run Club Singapore, who shares his insights from coaching and training in the Velocity NITRO™ 4 . The latest addition to PUMA’s performance running lineup — the PUMA Velocity NITRO™ 4 — quietly steps onto the track with a mix of familiar reliability and thoughtful upgrades. A true neutral daily trainer, this fourth iteration signals PUMA's continued push into the competitive world of modern running shoes. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR With a sleek design, enhanced NITRO™ foam midsole, and impressive versatility, the Velocity NITRO™ 4 makes a strong case for your daily mileage companion. First Impressions: Clean Aesthetic, Subtle Performance Hints Right out of the box, the   Velocity NITRO™ 4   gives off a premium vibe. PUMA has taken a minimalist approach to the upper in a retro yet modernistic design — encased in a breathable engineered mesh that feels lightweight yet durable. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Reflective hits add a touch of nighttime safety, and the streamlined silhouette makes it just as suitable for post-run coffee stops as it is for tempo work. Colourways for men's and women's shoes are versatile, blending bold with neutral options — a nod to the modern runner’s preference for performance that doesn't compromise style. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Midsole Upgrade: Softer, Snappier, and More Efficient The standout upgrade is the reworked NITRO™ foam midsole, which PUMA claims has been tuned for better responsiveness and long-distance comfort. On-foot, the foam feels noticeably softer under the heel with a slightly firmer pop off the forefoot — delivering a balanced ride that suits everything from easy runs to up tempo sessions. While not a carbon-plated speed shoe, the Velocity NITRO™ 4 offers a snappy toe-off and smoother transitions thanks to its improved geometry and refined heel bevel. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Fit & Upper: Secure and Breathable Without Overcomplication The upper of the Velocity NITRO™ 4 continues to be one of the more underrated aspects of PUMA’s lineup. It’s breathable in warm conditions and features strategically placed overlays for added midfoot structure. The heel collar is padded without being overly plush, and the gusseted tongue stays in place across the duration of your run. The fit runs true to size for most, feeling just nice for narrow to mid-volume feet while still accommodating to other foot shapes without feeling sloppy. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Outsole Grip: PUMAGRIP Still Delivers One of PUMA’s quiet superpowers remains its PUMAGRIP rubber outsole — and the Velocity NITRO™ 4 continues that legacy. Whether on wet pavement, gravel paths, or dry tarmac, grip remains excellent. Durability has proven solid in past models, and early mileage on the NITRO™ 4 suggests the outsole will hold up just as well over time. Insights from the Track: Jacky Ong on the Velocity NITRO 4 Coach Jacky Ong praised the shoe’s ability to “handle back-to-back sessions with ease” and highlighted its “everyday versatility” for runners of all levels. As the head coach of PUMA Nitro Run Club Singapore , Jacky brings real-world coaching insights to the review — particularly around how the shoe holds up under consistent use from new runners to seasoned athletes. Speaking on the Sole Mates podcast by SportPlus.sg , Jacky shared that the Velocity NITRO™ 4 is the PUMA shoe he reaches for the most in his weekly rotation. "It’s the kind of shoe that adapts to your needs," he said. "I can take it for slightly more uptempo sessions when I feel good, and on days when my legs are feeling beaten up, it still gives me the cushioning I need." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Jacky also highlighted the shoe's exceptional value for money: "At the price it’s being sold, it punches well above its weight. You’re getting a lot of tech, comfort, and durability without paying the premium price you see on other brands’ daily trainers." This balance — responsive enough for progression runs, yet forgiving on recovery days — is what makes the Velocity NITRO™ 4 a standout choice for runners looking for a do-it-all shoe without breaking the bank. What’s New in Version 4? Key Upgrades from the Velocity NITRO 3 PUMA didn’t just do a cosmetic refresh with the Velocity NITRO 4 — the updates are subtle but impactful, especially for runners familiar with version 3. 100% NITRO™ Foam Midsole : One of the biggest changes — version 4 now features a full-length NITRO™ foam midsole, replacing the dual-density setup used in version 3 (which had standard EVA above and NITRO™ below). The result? A more consistent, responsive, and smoother ride from heel to toe. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Another one of the most noticeable improvements is the reduction in weight. Version 4 feels significantly lighter on foot, making transitions feel smoother and less fatiguing, especially over longer distances. Another upgrade comes in the midfoot fit. For runners who found the Velocity NITRO™ 3  slightly too snug through the arch and midfoot, version 4 offers a slightly wider platform — enough to improve comfort and accommodate a wider range of foot shapes, without losing the secure lockdown that the line is known for. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG  / HANA BASIR Combined with the refined NITRO™ foam tuning and improved geometry, these changes make the Velocity NITRO™ 4 not just a good sequel — but arguably the most runner-friendly and versatile version yet. Who It’s For: A Reliable Daily Trainer That Flies Under the Radar The PUMA Velocity NITRO™ 4 is a great option for: Neutral runners looking for a reliable, versatile daily trainer Beginners seeking comfort without sacrificing performance Runners rotating between speed and long runs who want a dependable middle-ground shoe It doesn’t have the aggressive marketing presence of other super shoes, but what it does have is substance, comfort, and consistency. Final Verdict: Velocity NITRO™ 4 Is PUMA’s Quiet Confidence The PUMA Velocity NITRO™ 4 doesn’t chase trends. Instead, it offers a consistent, no-nonsense ride that quietly improves on its already solid foundation. At a competitive price point, with high-end midsole tech and a dialed-in fit, it’s a daily trainer that deserves more attention in 2025’s crowded running shoe market. Whether you’re logging miles, coaching athletes, or just starting your running journey, the Velocity NITRO™ 4 proves itself as one of PUMA’s best neutral trainers to date. • FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025 Preview: Team Singapore’s Young Basketball Talents Gear Up for Singapore Sports Hub Spectacle

Team Singapore youth basketballers Karl Dahlén Phua and Liam Richard Arman Blakney share their journey, aspirations, and what it would mean for them to compete in front of a home crowd ahead of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025 PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG This is a feature article written by SportPlus.sg for Kallang Alive Sports Management . For more sports events, programmes and human stories of Singapore Sports Hub, visit the Singapore Sports Hub's 'Here to Play' website . As the countdown begins for the FIBA 3x3 Basketball Asia Cup at the Singapore Sports Hub next weekend, the excitement in Singapore’s basketball community is palpable. With the high-energy, fast-paced format growing in popularity, two young Team Singapore hopefuls, Karl Dahlén Phua and Liam Richard Arman Blakney , share their journey, aspirations, and what it would mean for them to compete in front of a home crowd. Journey Into 3x3 Basketball Both Karl and Liam picked up basketball in their early teens, initially playing other sports before fully committing to the game. For Liam, it wasn’t until secondary school that he started taking basketball seriously. “I only started playing 3x3 over the past year,” he says. “There were trials for the national team, I made it through, and that pushed my growth. It gave me a new level where I could improve as a player.” Karl shares a similar experience. “I picked up basketball around 12 years-old, but it was only in secondary school that I really fell in love with the sport. I loved the grind, the opportunity to improve, and meeting new people.” After joining the national 3x3 training squad last year, Karl knew this was the next step in his development. “It’s been a great journey, and I’m just happy to keep playing.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Role Models and Growth in the Game When asked about basketball inspirations, Karl immediately names Kobe Bryant. “I don’t necessarily play like him, but I admire his work ethic and mentality. Hopefully, in time I can embody even a fraction of that.” Liam credits his parents and teammates for shaping his career. “My parents have always pushed me to play sports, and my teammates push me to get better every day. I couldn’t ask for a better support system.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Adapting to 3x3 Basketball Transitioning from traditional 5-on-5 basketball to the fast-paced world of 3x3 is no easy feat. Karl acknowledges the challenges but believes in learning the right concepts. “At first, it was a struggle, but it’s not rocket science. Anyone can play 3x3, but to play at a high level, you need to understand spacing and tactics. Concepts are crucial and sets apart the good players from the great players.” Liam was quick to emphasise the physical demands of 3x3. “Stamina is key. The game is relentless, and you have to be sharp with the little details—setting screens differently, playing defense more aggressively. Thankfully, we have a great coach who has played at the highest level guiding us.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Representing Singapore and Future Aspirations For Karl, every opportunity to represent Singapore is a proud moment. “It doesn’t matter the scale of the tournament; wearing the national colours is an honour.” Liam recalls a standout moment in last year’s U21 Asia Cup. “We beat Chile with only three players. That has to be my proudest 3x3 moment so far.” With the upcoming FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup in Singapore, both players see the home crowd as a major source of motivation. “Playing in front of a crowd brings a different energy,” says Liam. “A big crowd changes everything.” Karl adds, “I imagine competing at the Singapore Sports Hub in front of family and friends is a completely different feeling. We would have more pride, play even harder, to show what Singapore is about, what we've worked on, and to show up for the home crowd.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The Impact of High-Profile Basketball Events in Singapore Hosting major events like the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup is crucial for basketball’s growth in Singapore and the Singapore Sports Hub . “These tournaments attract people who might not even be basketball fans,” Karl points out. “They see a game, get curious, and that helps build interest in the sport.” Liam is hopeful that Singapore can continue making strides in 3x3. “We want to show that Singapore can compete at a high level. Hopefully, one day, 3x3 will be one of the main sports here.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Singapore Sports Hub: A Crucial Platform for National Athletes As one of Singapore’s premier sporting venues, the Singapore Sports Hub plays a vital role in fostering athletic development and providing opportunities for local athletes. The state-of-the-art facilities, combined with the ability to host international competitions like the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup, create an environment where Singaporean athletes can test themselves against top talents from around the world. Karl acknowledges the significance of such a platform. “Having events like this at the Singapore Sports Hub pushes us to be better. The exposure, the atmosphere, and the level of competition are all crucial in our development as players.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Liam agrees, adding, “The Sports Hub gives us the chance to showcase what we’ve worked for. It allows us to dream bigger, seeing that we can compete at home and hopefully on a global stage.” By continuing to host major tournaments, the Singapore Sports Hub cements its place as a key contributor to the nation’s sporting future, inspiring both current and future generations of athletes to strive for excellence. Advice for the Next Generation As young athletes making their mark, Karl and Liam have valuable advice for aspiring basketball players. “Keep improving every day,” Karl stresses. “Whether it’s shooting, strength training, or conditioning—never stay stagnant.” Liam’s advice is simple but powerful: “Just keep working. Wake up at 5 AM and go for that run. Hard work and passion will take you far, in basketball and in life.” PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Looking Ahead With the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup set to electrify the Singapore Sports Hub from the 26 - 30 March 2025 at the OCBC Square, Karl and Liam are ready to take the next step in their journey, with Liam also selected to feature in this year’s tournament. As they continue to develop their skills and push the limits of Singaporean basketball, one thing is certain—the future of 3x3 basketball in Singapore is in promising hands. #FIBA3x3 #mySgSportsHub
