Rock The Naked Truth Celebrates 7th Anniversary with 5KM Shirtless Run

Body positivity movement event attracts 150 participants at Sentosa, in a bid to encourage everyone to accept their own bodies regardless of shape and size

You don’t need washboard abs or a flat stomach to take your top off for a run. You just need confidence.

Understandably, some might be shy or embarrassed about their bodies, thus the objective of this shirtless run is to encourage people to be proud of their bodies and not worry about what others might think. The truth is no one cares.

This shirtless run is in celebration of the seventh anniversary of my body positivity movement Rock The Naked Truth. It honestly doesn’t feel like seven years, especially when we missed the fifth and sixth anniversaries because of the pandemic, but here I am, taking off my shirt alongside 150 runners to commemorate this occasion.

When I first conceptualised this, I was a little worried that I might struggle to get sign-ups. Thus, I am beyond grateful to see so many people show up early on a Saturday morning for this. There were people across different age ranges, from toddlers to seniors, in all shapes and sizes.

The program was simple – gather, take your top off, run or walk 5km and earn a limited edition Rock The Naked Truth x Skechers singlet. I know it sounds a little ironic – take off your top to earn a top, but that’s the fun in it!

Participants were also given a special Skechers water bottle that had a colour-changing Rock The Naked Truth logo – the logo turns from white to teal when the liquid in the bottle is cold. This gift is really from the heart because my partner and I spent Christmas carving out the logo decal and sticking them onto the bottles – all 150 of them.

In the name of sustainability, these bottles were then used for hydration with a recovery drink from BIX, courtesy of Red Dot Running Company. That’s not all – participants also got to take home a BOCO Gear mask and a Blue Q toothbrush that had very quirky messages on it.

I always have a lucky draw for these anniversary events and we had some amazing prizes from Leader Radio Technologies (WeAreReady.sg), Skechers and Red Dot Running Company.

The top prize was not one, but two units of the TORRAS Coolify 2, a portable wearable air conditioner which is exactly what we need in Singapore’s hot and humid weather.

I couldn’t have asked for more – the weather was lovely, 150 people showed up to run without their tops in support of body positivity and I got to celebrate Rock The Naked Truth’s seventh anniversary in (shirtless) style. My former members of my running club ROCKrunners also came back to volunteer as crew.

It felt so good bringing the running community together for a good cause. This may not seem like a big deal to some of you, but for many of us, it really takes a lot for us to take off our shirts in public. So to all those who took a big step today, you deserve a big pat on the back. I am so proud of you!
