After a week of back and forth between Sharjah FC, Lion City Sailors and The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), provisional approval has been granted to the home side to host the upcoming AFC Champions League Two (ACL Two) final at Bishan Stadium on 18th May.

"This is subject to final inspection and formal approval by AFC in early May," Lion City Sailors said in their statement on Wednesday (Apr 23).

"Over the next few weeks, the club will be working closely with Sport Singapore, the Football Association of Singapore and sports industry experts to make the necessary upgrades and preparations to ensure the venue is match-ready for the big night on 18 May."

Though The Sailors had successfully hosted all their previous ACL Two home games at Jalan Besar Stadium, Sharjah FC requested for the final to be moved, citing the ground's limited capacity and artificial turf pitch as reasons for being unfit to host a final of such stature.

The Sailors however, put their foot down in a statement on 19 April.

"We want to state our position clearly: this final must be played in Singapore. This is our home, and as the club that has earned the right to host the final, we believe it is only fair and proper that it takes place on Singaporean soil," they said.

"Jalan Besar Stadium has been a certified AFC Champions League Two venue that meets AFC’s regulations and requirements throughout the competition, successfully hosting six home matches in this tournament alone. It has a proud history of staging major football matches and has more than proven itself as a capable and reliable venue."

With the Singapore National Stadium set to host Lady Gaga's concerts on the same night, the stadium is unable to host the highly-awaited final.

The ACL Two final is set to kick off at 8pm on 18th May, with ticketing details to be announced in due course.
