The case for open-ear design headphones has been on the rise with several high profile accidents involving runners making the news in recent years, as we continue to witness an increase in participation of the sport even after Covid restrictions have been lifted.

Not only are open-ear designed earbuds considered safer overall, they also bring the added benefit of allowing you to continue to be social and chat with your friends as you workout.

What are Open-Ear Headphones / Earbuds?

Unlike semi-open and fully closed wireless earbuds, which cover the opening of your ear canals, open-ear headphones or earbuds have the benefit of not having the earbuds plugged into your ear canals. This is widely deemed as a more hygienic and safer option, as it allows you to be aware of your surroundings even as you run or exercise.

But in a world where we are spoilt for choice when it comes to wireless earbuds, just how do you know what features to consider before purchasing the right ones for yourself? Here we break down some of the key things you may wish to look at before making your purchase.

Sound Quality

Sound quality probably tops the list when it comes to any headphones or earbuds. This usually depends on the codecs that are used, and one should consider the frequency response, which is essential for accurate and balanced sound.

Battery Life

Having a pair of headphones or earbuds that die on you midway through your run or workout ain't fun. Trust me, it happened to me very recently in a half marathon event I was running and I had to run the rest of the race without music. Not a fun experience.

Easy-To-Use Controls

Not everyone likes to toggle through songs on their favourite workout playlist through the phone. Many prefer the ease and convenience of doing so directly via the earbuds. Having easy-to-use controls helps to deliver an overall smoother experience which would increase user satisfaction for most audiophiles.

Noise Cancellation Features

Being able to hear your music even in loud environments has been a key feature that most consider before making their purchase.

Safety

Then again, if you’re running outside, you would want to get a pair of headphones or earbuds that offer safety features that allow you to still be conscious of your surroundings.

Oladance OWS Pro

So which earbuds are deemed to be the best fit for athletes or individuals with an active lifestyle? At SportPlus.sg we believe the OlaDance OWS Pro is the go-to option when it comes to wireless earbuds for sports in 2023.

With its sleek looking design that is both fashionable and futuristic, this set of open-ear earbuds also comes with some pretty cool tech in a case that can recharge the earbuds.

Noise Cancellation when in Focus Mode

While open-ear design headphones inevitably suffer from poorer sound quality than fully closed earbuds overall, Oladance has mitigated those issues to offer superior sound quality with its focus mode, which kills a very specific band of higher-pitched frequencies when indoors.

Even when outdoors, each pair of Oladance OWS Pro is equipped with six microphones to cancel out excess external sound waves and separate human voice from environmental noise, making it possible for conversations even amidst strong winds.

Bluetooth Multipoint

More good news is that you can also use each earbud independently, or even mix and match earbuds from different sets of Oladance OWS Pros to make them into a stereo pair. This is available through Bluetooth Multipoint support, which is one reason why you might want to pick them over most of its competitors, which can only handle one Bluetooth connection at a time.

Superior Battery Life

Oladance claims the OWS Pro has 16 hours of playtime on a single charge, and a total of 58 hours when you include the charging case. That makes these the only open-ear earbuds you can buy that will give you a full day’s worth of use. Should you actually run them dry, a 15-minute rapid charge will buy you an extra six hours.

1. How is your experience with the Oladance earbuds?

I would liken it to having an elevated personal home theatre on the go.

2. What do you think of its open ear concept, where you can hear your surroundings while listening to the music?

I think it’s great because it allows me to remain aware of my surroundings while listening to music, especially if I am crossing the roads or at night which might not be so safe in quiet parks. I feel it’s important to have that awareness of my surroundings.

3. Have you tried focus mode? What do you like about it?

The focus mode noise reduction technology does help me to focus better if I am using the earbuds for meetings so it ensures clarity.

4. What is your favourite feature of the OWS Pro earbuds?

I really like the aesthetics of the earbuds. Mine is the titanium chrome version, so I think it’s really beautiful. With that, even when I’m traveling and taking the public transport system I use the earbuds to elevate my overall look.

1.What is your favourite feature of the Oladance OWS Pro?

Having never used an open ear concept earphone before, I was uncertain how comfortable one would feel, however, after using the Oladance OWS Pro, it pleasantly surprised me with its excellent stability for highly intensive activities like running and cycling yet comfortable for all-day wear and light enough to forget I'm even wearing them!

The powerful bass enhances my music experience, and the focus mode lets me fully immerse myself in my tunes. It's the perfect choice for my active, music-loving lifestyle to hype me up or when I'm going about my day.

2. Why do you think the open ear concept is important for you?

As a long distance road runner, I'm often out running on the roads and running beside pedestrian or even bicycle traffic. The open ear concept keeps me connected to my surrounding sounds and in charge of my safety while still immersing myself in my music. Safety always comes first!

3. What do you think of its battery life?

With most normal earbuds giving only about 10-12 hours of battery life, the Oladance OWS Pro continues to amaze me with almost 16 hours of battery life and up to 58 hours with the charging case. In runner math, that’s able to last you a few full marathons right there.

What is your favourite feature of the OWS Pro?

I love “focus mode” the most, as it allows me to continue to be social and chat with my friends - be it whether I am working out or at work as it creates a bubble around me to enjoy my music while tuning out ambient noises which may be distracting.

How do these compare to previous earphones you have used for your runs?

Oladance OWS Pro's amazing battery life has meant I can go for multiple long runs on a single charge - this was an issue with my previous earphones which died on me more than once. Once even during a race at the Gold Coast Half-marathon, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience having to run the rest of the race without music.

What do you think is the biggest drawback for the Oladance OWS Pro?

From what I understand the fit can be an issue for those with much smaller ears, so I would strongly encourage people to try them out if necessary before purchase. Make sure it’s a good fit for you that way you can fully enjoy and appreciate what the earbuds have to offer you.

What activities do you think the Oladance OWS Pro is best suited for?

I would say they're perfect for long runs, and last longer than other earphones in this price tier, and the sound is unbeatable.
