SINGAPORE, 1 June 2026 — History was written at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday night as legendary Singapore football captain Hariss Harun officially became the nation’s most-capped footballer.

Leading the Lions to a commanding 4-0 international friendly victory over Mongolia, the 35-year-old midfield dynamo earned his 148th cap, overtaking the long-standing record held by defensive icon Daniel Bennett.

The Jalan Besar crowd of 4,234 fans gave the skipper a roaring standing ovation when he was substituted in the 75th minute—a fitting tribute to a player who has anchored the national team for nearly two decades.

From Curry Puff Deliveries to Singapore Football Royalty

Hariss' journey to the pinnacle of Singapore football news is a masterclass in longevity, humility, and sheer work ethic. Debuting as a prodigy in 2007 at just 16 years old, he broke records as Singapore's youngest-ever debutant under former coach Radojko Avramovic.

Reflecting on his historic 148th cap, Hariss remained typically grounded, shifting the spotlight toward his family's early sacrifices.

“As a boy, I just wanted to represent the country, so this milestone is a huge honour for me, and a proud moment for my family, who have made many sacrifices for me to be here,” Hariss shared with The Straits Times.

“I saw my parents make ends meet through working double jobs. At one point, my mother sold curry puffs from home for extra income, and my brother and I helped deliver them to a shop. These experiences humbled me and taught me values.”

Dominant Lions Performance Caps Historic Night

On the pitch, Gavin Lee’s side made sure the skipper’s milestone night was paired with a flawless team performance. Facing a resilient but rusty Mongolia side playing its first international match in nearly two years, the Lions asserted their dominance early, maintaining 65% possession in the first half.

Singapore’s goals came courtesy of a clinical team effort:

Safuwan Baharudin opened the scoring. Song Ui-young doubled the lead just before the break.

An own goal by Mongolia's Orgil Orkhon (forced by a Shawal Anuar strike) made it three, before Ikhsan Fandi put the exclamation mark on the victory, finishing clinically into the corner to seal the 4-0 rout.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, Coach Gavin Lee was quick to praise the team's tactical discipline and the unwavering example set by their veteran captain.

The Ultimate Servant Leader

Hariss Harun's career has spanned the ultimate highs—including the 2012 AFF Championship triumph and a historic AFC Cup win with Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT)—as well as the inevitable low patches that come with representing the national team.

Through the intense scrutiny of modern football, the Lions captain has consistently chosen to lead by example rather than vent on social media.

“Of course, when we don't produce results and the performances, we get the stick, and it hits hard. But it's part of the job, and I've learnt to take it on the chin and move on,” Hariss reflected.

“The national team journey is something I can relate to in life. You got to really work your socks off for everything you want to achieve. Nothing is always smooth, there are always ups and downs and moving parts... we went along with it, learnt, adapted, matured to come back stronger.”

His long-time national team roommate and forward, Ilhan Fandi, echoed the sentiment of an entire locker room:

“He is inspirational and influential. He sets high standards and is not afraid to be vocal for the good of the team... but he also has that aura of a leader that can get the team to step up even when he stays silent.”

Looking Ahead: China Friendly and the 2027 AFC Asian Cup

True to his trademark focus, Hariss is already looking past his individual accolades. The 4-0 victory over Mongolia serves as vital preparation for next year's highly anticipated 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia—a tournament Singapore qualified for in dramatic fashion following a historic win over Hong Kong in late 2025.

Before that, the Lions face a much stiffer test this coming Friday, June 5th, when they host 94th-ranked China in another international friendly at Jalan Besar Stadium.

For the most-capped player in Singapore's history, the mission never changes:

“Every game we play now will be in preparation to give a good account of ourselves at the Asian Cup next year.”
