- Benefits of Sport and Exercise on Mental Health and Social Well-being
While the physical benefits of exercise has been well-documented, less has been talked about on how exercise can benefit our mental health and well-being This is a feature article written by SportPlus.sg for Kallang Alive Sports Management. For more sports events, programmes and human stories of Singapore Sports Hub, visit the Singapore Sports Hub website here, and subscribe to their e-Newsletter here. As World Mental Health Day draws close, we explore the impact that exercise has on mental health. As the pressures of the modern world multiply with each passing day, having good mental health has become a greater priority in our lives. One often overlooked and underutilised tool for nurturing mental well-being is exercise. While there are many physical benefits that come with sport participation, the many positive and lasting impacts that exercise brings to the table for mental well-being are often less discussed. Mental Fortitude Exercise plays a quintessential role when it comes to inculcating crucial values that can specifically help to develop your mental fortitude. Similarly, that same tenacity helps you to battle against stress and manage anxiety off the field, which contributes to improved mental well-being. Through overcoming challenges, setbacks, and failures, active participants in sport usually adopt a frame of resilience in their outlook towards life, which often cascades to other areas including self confidence and perseverance. “On a neurological level, engaging in physical activities or sports helps us to release hormones particularly dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and enkephalins, which are critical in helping us with mood regulation, sleep regulation, and mental focus,” explained Daryl Tan, a therapist at Goodity Co. These also help to induce uplifting feelings of pleasure and satisfaction, which helps you adopt a more positive outlook on life. Being physically active is an effective stress reliever as it alleviates anxiety and tension, protecting you from being hindered by negative thoughts. Hence, this natural high does wonders when it comes to keeping stress and depression at bay. After all, nothing beats the sense of accomplishment one derives at the end of a strenuous workout or intense ball game. Not only that, the rewarding process that exercise offers also carries plenty of psychological benefits, which include higher levels of perceived competence and self-worth. Tasting success in sports, be it through self-improvement or team victories, also bolsters your self-esteem. This newfound belief is transferable to other aspects of character development as it equips you with the right tools to face your challenges and pursue your goals with added confidence. Healthy Social Connections Having healthy social connections also plays a pivotal role in maintaining a positive mental landscape. Exercise inherently encourages social interaction whether it's in the recreational space with friends and acquaintances or in the realms of competitive team sport. Being part of a team often comes with a strong sense of identity and belonging, playing the role of a second family where each member is valued and accepted. Teammates often lean on each other during both the triumphs and the setbacks, which gives you the added assurance that you have a network of people who are there to share your journey and offer support. Besides competing together, post-game meals and bonding sessions with fellow teammates often offer social opportunities where you can get to meet new people or form connections at a deeper level with friends. Such meaningful social bonds can do wonders especially for those struggling with loneliness or mental health issues. Singapore’s Sporting Playground A great place to begin your sporting journey with friends and to meet new people is at the Singapore Sports Hub! I remember last year’s race was the first physical event after the circuit breaker and we (the running community) feel very touched and privileged that it still went on.” 10km runners being flagged off by Dr Su Chun Wei, Chief, Singapore Sport Institute & Sport Singapore; Ms Jennifer See, Managing Director, F&N; and Mr Colin Chan, MD, Group Marketing, Great Eastern. PHOTO: GREAT EASTERN WOMEN'S RUN Teo recorded a personal best in the race and pledged to return next year: “I think it’s nice to have a women’s race where we all encourage each other to be better. It’s a well-organised event and I really appreciate everyone’s effort and time to put this race on for us.” Another first-time participant, 17-year-old Faith Zhen Ford, also managed to cross the finish line in first place for the 10km category. “I was nervous but as I was approaching the finish line, I saw my Dad making a gesture to indicate that I was first so I ran even faster. It’s a very fun race, and I definitely want to do it again. It was quite nice running this route and running together with everyone else.” Runners in the 5km category running along Nicoll Highway. PHOTO: GREAT EASTERN WOMEN'S RUN This year, Great Eastern staff and financial representatives also led a fundraising initiative since mid-September. A grand total of S$220,000 was raised in support of Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT) and Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) through individual and corporate donation pledges. Colin Chan, Managing Director, Group Marketing, Great Eastern said: “It is heartening to see the GEWR community again, running together as one, to achieve their personal milestones and unlock their own versions of greatness. We are also very proud and thankful of our staff and financial representatives, who activated their networks and clocked steps since September, as well as our corporate partners who helped to raise funds for both beneficiaries.” 10km runners starting their run, the first physical mass run for women since 2019. PHOTO: GREAT EASTERN WOMEN'S RUN The race was launched earlier this year on 8 September, and apart from the virtual mini-challenges presented on the race app to help runners ramp up their fitness in anticipation of the race, physical fringe activities such as bounce classes and kayaking were also organised for race participants. On race day, participants were rewarded with a slew of treats and activities at the race village to mark the day’s achievement. The younger ones got to complete their 2km run with a memorable photo finish, by coming down a 7.5metres-tall inflatable slide. The post-race powder rooms proved to still be as popular for participants to freshen up, before capturing memories with their friends at the multiple photo points. They also got to try their luck at the claw and gachapon machines, where many walked away with amazing prizes such as yoga mats, smart watches and gym passes. #Running #GEWR2022 #ReachForGreat

For each kilometre fundraisers clock between today and 30 September, Great Eastern will donate $1 to the beneficiary organisations Daughters Of Tomorrow and Singapore Cancer Society, while all race registrations today will also attract a $5 donation from Great Eastern. Samsidah, a runner and pacer from popular Singapore running group The Running Department, shared: "Great Eastern Women's Run have always reached out to the loyalty participants who come back every year. We are all still standing here because of the vibes. We hope that this year it will be a huge turnout and bring back the pre-Covid years." PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSEIN, SPORTPLUS.SG Singapore's only all-women's run has been organised by the insurer Great Eastern since 2006. The race was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19-related social restrictions. In 2021, the run was held virtually, with the exception of a smaller physical event for elite runners. Last year, the run resumed in a reduced physical format at the Sports Hub, with 4,000 runners taking part. #Running #GEWR2023
