  • Lion City Sailors Earn First 2024/25 Shopee Cup Victory in 2-0 Win Against Kuala Lumpur City

Goals from Bailey Wright and Maxime Lestienne secured Lion City Sailors' Shopee Cup win at Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday evening. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Three games in, and Lion City Sailors have finally earned their first win in this season's Shopee Cup. The Sailors, who had conceded a total eight goals this campaign in their previous two losses, cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win against Kuala Lumpur City last night at Jalan Besar Stadium. Kuala Lumpur City had previously been on a winning streak in the tournament, making this their first defeat. With a win now in the bag, The Sailors sit in fifth place in Group B, just a spot above Kaya FC-iloilo in last. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The home side were quick to build an attack, creating their first goal-scoring opportunity just a minute and a half into the match. Shawal Anuar had burst forward on the flank, before cutting the ball back into box. The effort however, was blocked by an alert Adrijan Rudovic. After controlling the midfield for most of the game, The Sailors eventually found their breakthrough in the 26th minute when captain, Bailey Wright headed in Song Ui-yong's corner from the far post to make it 1-0. Kuala Lumpur's Muhammad Haqimi then came close to an equaliser when the 21-year-old pummelled the ball goal-wards, but his powerful effort curled over the bar. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The Sailors failed to dominate after the break as much as they did in the first half, as the Malaysian side came out of the blocks looking for redemption. After a few failed attacks though, it was Maxime Lestienne who came closest to finding the back of the net in the 63rd minute, but the forward's long range effort rattled the crossbar. The Belgian however, made no mistake when given another opportunity just two minutes later. A swift one-two between Lestienne and Bart Ramselaar ended with Lestienne’s delicate first-touch chip over goalkeeper Azri Abdul Ghani. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Kuala Lumpur showed no sign of backing down, and were still on the hunt for a comeback. They once again came agonisingly close to securing that elusive goal, this time in the 84th minute. Defender, Mohd Kamal Azizi's shot from far outside the box — much like Lestienne's earlier effort — pinged the crossbar. Rushing to diminish the dangers of a rebound was Toni Datkovic and Wright. The latter was accused of handling the ball in the process, but calls for a penalty from the visiting players and fans were ignored, and the game ended 2-0 in favour of the Singaporean side. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The victory reignites hopes for The Sailors to advance to the knockouts, but the road ahead remains fraught with challenges as they are set to face Thailand's Buriram United on 23rd January. Here are more highlights of The Sailors' clash against Kuala Lumpur City. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The 20-year-old Spaniard, Sergio Carmona Perez, delivered a tireless 90-minute performance, relentlessly chasing down every opportunity to regain possession throughout the match. Here, the defender slides to win the ball back from an experienced Kamal Azizi. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Song Ui-yong and Ryan Lambert lock together as the two midfielders fight for the loose ball. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG With Datkovic's attention fixed on the ball controlled by the attacking Kamal Azizi, Carmona's gaze remains locked on Partiban Janasekaran, fully alert to the possibility of the 31-year-old midfielder executing a threatening run. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Lionel Tan and Rui Pires close in on Adrijan Rudovic, before the latter swiftly dispossess the Montenegrin. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The Sailors' defending powerhouse Datkovic wins an aerial battle against Kuala Lumpur City's own heavyweight defender, Giancarlo Gallifuoco. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Kuala Lumpur City's Haqimi, at just 21 years old, proved to be a formidable presence on the field. Here, the forward works with his captain, Paulo Josue to get the ball up the pitch. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Shawal Anuar battles Kamal Azizi for the ball in the air during a match brimming with aerial duels, all in a bid to gain control of the midfield. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The Crew, ever faithful in filling the home stand, celebrate their victory at full time. #lioncitysailors #ASEANUtdFC #ShopeeCup

  • Top Things to Do and Muslim-friendly Food Spots to Explore After Completing the Sydney Marathon

Wondering what to do while in Sydney for the newly-minted World Marathon Major? Sportplus.sg and Destination New South Wales have got you covered PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG As the TCS Sydney Marathon Presented by ASICS celebrates becoming the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major, it now also prepares itself for a much larger scale race, with thousands more set to take part. Now a Marathon Major, countless of runners, supporters and even members of the media from all over the world will inevitably descend upon the capital of New South Wales in August. As two Muslims who've covered the marathon before, with the help of Destination New South Wales (DNSW) , we've got you covered with things to do and the best food spots around town. If you're looking for Muslim-friendly options, here are just a few unassuming ones. Kürtősh - Darling Square Kürtősh is a Hungarian cafe located at Darling Square in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. There are multiple outlets, however, Darling Square's is the closest to ICC Sydney — where the race expo will be held — and in the heart of Chinatown. The cafe announced itself as a halal cafe but has also warned of several pastries containing traces of alcohol, so remember to check with the staff on which to stay away from! While hot drinks range from AUD$4.40 to $5 (an estimate of SGD$4 to $4.90), the iced drinks are slightly pricier, ranging from AUD$5.20 to $7.70 (SGD$4.60 to $6.90). For Singaporeans, the coffee at Kurtosh would probably be on the cheaper end, as coffee in Singapore can easily be $7 to $8 if they're not your local Kopi Os and Kopi Cs. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Kürtősh's coffee was addicting, and as two coffee lovers, it got our seal of approval within the first sip. The coffee was refreshing, not too bitter and not too sweet. If you're one to ask for syrup like me, the baristas knew just how much syrup to drizzle to perfection. The cafe has a range of cakes and pastries and breakfast options as well. There was a debate between us on whether the cinnamon scroll or smashed avocado on toast was better, but why not let two good things co-exist peacefully? They were both delectable after all. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG It opens early, so get that coffee in before hitting the streets to explore. You'll need it! Kürtősh - Darling Square Shop 1, 16 Nicolle Walk Darling Square, Haymarket NSW 2000, Australia Monday - Thursday: 7.40am - 10.30pm Friday: 7.30am - 11pm Saturday: 8.30am - 11pm Sunday: 8.30am - 10pm 1915 Lanzhou Beef Noodles - World Square If you love Tongue Tip Lanzhou Beef Noodles or Nuodle here in Singapore, then you have to go to 1915 Lanzhou Beef Noodles at World Square in Sydney. The quaint restaurant tucked away in the mall on Liverpool Street is 100% halal. It has four outlets in Sydney, with World Square's being the only one in the city center. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG The restaurant serves different types of hand-pulled beef noodles hailing from Lanzhou, a city in China with over a million Muslims. The menu is simple and caters to both the spice lovers and those who prefer a hearty, non-spicy meal. If you're really into spicy food, every table comes with extra crispy chilli oil for you to go crazy with. There's also an array of dry noodles and sides such as cucumber salads and hand-made dumplings. With the Sydney Marathon being held during the tail-end of winter, and with the 2024 edition in particular being caught in windy conditions, the hot bowls of soupy noodles were our saviours. Portions were also big and filling, with authentic hand-pulled chewy noodles. Overall? 10/10! 1915 Lanzhou Beef Noodles - World Square Shop 17/123 Liverpool St, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia Monday - Sunday: 11am - 9pm Betty's Burgers - Multiple Outlets While Betty's Burgers is not independently Halal certified, it's chicken and beef suppliers are. Upon request, workers will clean the grill to ensure no remnants of pork is left when grilling your meal. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Betty's Burgers boasts three convenient locations in Sydney, all situated in the heart of the city. Their burgers are exactly what you crave after a long day of exploring—comforting, satisfying, and delicious. While the menu may not be groundbreaking, the juicy, perfectly grilled beef and impeccably seasoned fries hit the spot. What more could you ask for? Its menu also contained interesting options like the Bare Betty: Angus beef, tomato, onion, cheese, Betty's special sauce, all wrapped in lettuce. Intrigued and feeling healthy, I gave it a go. After all, it was something I'd never seen in Singapore before in a Halal restaurant. Overall, the Bare Betty felt much lighter than a traditional burger, yet it was satisfyingly filling. The crisp crunch of fresh lettuce on the first bite, followed by the tender, juicy perfection of the beef patty, was a whole experience in itself. 10/10, easy! PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Betty's Burgers also has plenty of chicken options and an array of milkshakes! Betty's Burgers - Market St / Circular Quay / Darling Harbour Opening hours depends on outlet Things to do after race day Runcations are the latest craze, so don't let the marathon be the only thing you do when you're in Sydney. Apart from strolling around the city center and shopping, there's plenty to do in and around Sydney. Here are some fun ideas! Taronga Zoo PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Taronga Zoo Sydney is one of the most popular attractions the city has to offer, and the experience begins even before stepping into the 70-acre park. Located in the suburb of Mosman on the shores of the Sydney Harbour, the most popular way of getting to the zoo is by ferry from the heart of the city. You can choose to board from either Darling Harbour or Circular Quay, both of which provide breathtaking views of Sydney's iconic landmarks including the the Sydney Opera House, and the opportunity to sail beneath the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Keep in mind that this isn't even the main attraction of the day! It's a 12 minute ride to Taronga Zoo from Circular Quay so sit back, feel the wind in your hair, and rest up. There'll be plenty of walking around at the zoo. Once you disembark the ferry, the main gates of Taronga Zoo is just a short bus ride away. Perched atop the hill on Bradleys Head Road, the bus winds its way up, filled with excited tourists eagerly taking in the journey. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG When you finally get to the zoo, remember to take a map with you. With all the different animals to visit, you won't want to miss out on any. One of the most interesting parts of to zoo is the Keeper Talks, where the park's zookeepers dish out fact after fact about the animals under their care. We were fortunate to catch the Chimpanzee Keeper Feed, an experience that felt like a live documentary. From within the secure enclosure, the keeper fed the chimpanzees while sharing fascinating insights into their characteristics and remarkable intelligence. To top it off, playful baby chimpanzees swung energetically through the trees, adding an extra layer of charm to the experience. The word "Taronga" derives from the Aboriginals, the Indigenous peoples of Australia and it islands. It means "beautiful view". Nothing quite encapsulated this like the cityscape backdrop of the zoo's giraffe enclosure. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Standing atop a small hill, you find yourself almost eye-to-eye with the majestic giraffes, towering at an impressive 14 to 19 feet tall.As if their presence wasn't already awe-inspiring, the view is flawlessly framed by the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the city’s stunning skyline stretching out in the distance. You won't want to leave, but there are more animals to meet. As you make your way through the zoo, don't be afraid to take a few detours into some of the smaller paths, as they're likely to also contain several species of animals as well. Be sure to read the map though, as it may be easy to get lost and miss a couple of animals. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Once you get to the seals and penguins, the route takes you indoors and into a space that provides peace like no other. Offering a cool refuge from the sun, the marine animal enclosures are thoughtfully designed with a tranquil ambiance. Only dim lights illuminate the space, apart from the shimmering sunlight filtering through the waters of the penguin and seal pools. There's even a big auditorium-like room for people to rest and soak in the serenity. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG Once you've gallivanted around the zoo, you'll eventually reach Australia's symbolic kangaroos and Tasmanian Red Devils. While the red devils are slightly harder to spot within their indoor enclosures, there are plenty of Red 'Roos and Rock Wallabies out and about for you to obsess over. As you approach the zoo entrance, and the end of the route, you'll encounter even more kangaroo species at Kangaroo Country. You thought we forgot about the Koalas? They're there too! Located next to Kangaroo Country is Koala Country. There's also a separate enclosure by the entrance of the zoo. With over 150 species of animals, Taronga Zoo prides itself on being a non-profit organisation and leads vital work that supports wildlife and communities, and its clear to see just how knowledgable and passionate its keepers are. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG Just a tip for Muslim travellers, there are no Halal options within the zoo, though vegetarian options are available! Packing and bringing your own food in is also allowed. Hop on, Hop Off Bus If you're strapped for time, there's really no better way to hit all the touristy spots than getting on the Hop on, Hop Off buses by BigBus Sydney . There are two route options. The Red Route takes you around the city. From Circular Quay, to Woolloomooloo Bay, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Fish Market, you name it, they'll take you there. The Blue Route however, is what we would recommend as it takes you the the sandy shores of Bondi Beach. Being slightly out of the way, Bondi Beach is not as easy to get to as compared to the spots on the red route, making the blue route the perfect way of getting there as you get to enjoy Sydney's suburbs on the way. PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG If you're sat on the bus' upper deck (if you're not, what are you doing?), you'll start to see the ocean as the bus makes its way downhill towards the beach. Made world famous through its stunning views, iconic surf culture and 'Bondi Rescue', a show focusing on the lives of its famous lifeguards, Bondi Beach is a must visit. Get off the bus once you're on Campbell Parade and Bondi Beach will be on your right. If you're into merchandise (like me), the bus stop is right by 'Between the Flags', a shop selling an array of Bondi themed clothes. Making your way down Campbell Parade right by the beach, you'll find a plethora of seafood bistros. And if you're by the Pacific Ocean, seafood is a must. First up, oysters and sashimi. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG It's no secret that oysters are an acquired taste, you either love them or you hate them. The oysters at Bondi were fresh and succulent, even for someone who used to avoid them at all costs. Squeezing the lemons onto the oysters is highly recommended! As a huge sashimi hater turned lover in recent years, I've learned to appreciate the freshness in its acquired taste. There's an entire range of sushi and sashimi on display, however my eyes were locked in on the scallops laid on a bed of Wakame seaweed topped with fish roe. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG It all melted within a bite. Paired with the wakame and lemon, the freshness was truly something that can't be found in Singapore. With our taste buds now tantalised and lunch time approaching, we began our search for fish and chips, because what else should you be having by the ocean? We chanced upon an old-fashioned looking Fish and Chip Shop called Bondi Surf Seafoods. Charmed by its timeless and nostalgic appearance, we decided to give it a go and packed our lunches away to the beach, something we highly recommend if you're in Sydney in spring, summer or early autumn! PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG There's nothing quite like a picnic by the beach and good weather. Though the price of lunch was on the higher end, it's understandable considering the location. The peaceful experience however, felt worth the price. It was a slow weekday afternoon, perfect for a picnic, people watching and soaking in the serenity provided by the sounds of waves crashing. Sure, after running a half or full marathon, your legs will surely be begging for mercy but these activities will have you feeling rejuvenated and wanting to return to Sydney in no time. Keep them in mind when planning your next Sydney Marathon! Looking to plan your next trip to Sydney? Visit DNSW for more ideas for your itinerary. #FeelNSW #MadeSydneyAMajor

  • Body Positivity Movement Rock The Naked Truth Celebrates Ninth Anniversary with Annual Shirtless Run, Recording Its Highest Ever Attendance

The 2025 edition of Rock The Naked Truth's annual shirtless run witnessed 200 runners unite to celebrate body positivity, as founder Cheryl Tay shares how it was like organising the run for a third year running PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH It was a lovely sight – 200 beautiful (shirtless) souls standing in front of me on a Sunday morning, all gathered for Rock The Naked Truth’s (RTNT) annual shirtless run, in collaboration with Sengkang East CSN and Neue Fit.  In celebration of RTNT’s ninth anniversary as well, this was the third year that I am organising the shirtless run and it was also the biggest turnout thus far, making me very, very happy. Fortunately, I had a great team of volunteers and friends who helped to make everything a smooth experience. I know firsthand how difficult it is to take your shirt off in public, let alone run without your shirt. That’s why I applaud every participant who found the courage to show up on an early Sunday morning to be a part of this movement and take their shirts off for the 5km run. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH I had people coming up to me or messaging me on Instagram that this was the first time they are running shirtless, and that they were nervous, but they felt better once they saw they were in the good company of bodies of all shapes and sizes. Remember that you’re never alone! Although I have recovered from my eating disorders that plagued me for over a decade, I still struggle from time to time with my body. Not sure if everyone here is aware, but I had to find the courage to be in my sports bra in front of so many people because it’s not something I usually do!  I often tell others that your relationship with your body image is a lifelong journey that you need to consistently put effort into. Life is too short, so don’t hold yourself back from chasing your dreams, love and live fiercely and surround yourself with positive people that lift you up.  Thankfully, the weather was bright and sunny, complete with blue skies and clouds. We ran across the iconic Tanjong Rhu bridge, headed in the direction of Marina Barrage, with scenic views of the Kallang River. We had young children run with us and some participants even ran with their kids in prams. One participant brought her dog for the run too! Hopefully, this meaningful run was a great start to the year for all who came. PHOTO: ROCK THE NAKED TRUTH After the easy 5km jog (no prizes for winning), we trooped back to Neue Fit for chilled 100PLUS PRO – that contains electrolytes, B vitamins, BCAA and protein to boost recovery – and a scrumptious buffet breakfast that cleared out entirely. Runners can really eat! Then it was time for the lucky draw, which had a very attractive prize pool. There were prizes from PUMA (apparel and shoes), 2XU apparel, Running Lab vouchers, Teva vouchers, Neue Fit gym passes, Oladance earbuds from WeAreReady.sg , guilt-free ice cream from Halo Top and NMN products from Live Long Long. I wanted some of these prizes for myself! This year, I also got local illustrator Kenneth Seow to design a series of Rock cartoon stickers because SportPlus.sg ’s founder John Yeong asked me why the rock is still naked after nine years. A tradition that I intend to keep, RTNT will continue with its annual shirtless run and next year’s 10th anniversary will mean you can look forward to something bigger and better! #RockTheNakedTruth #RTNTTurns9

  • adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 launches in Singapore

adidas running shoes Adizero Adios Pro 4 and EVO SL trend globally, Adios Pro 4 officially launched in Singapore on 2 January 2025 Singapore, 8 January 2025 – First worn in Singapore by adidas athlete Nicholas Rachmadi and the Superheroes Ekiden team at last December's Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, the popular Adizero Adios Pro 4 officially launched online and in stores in Singapore on 2 January 2025. Global sports brand adidas, known for its recognisable three stripes, first unveiled their latest innovations from the Adizero line for the podium-dominating Adizero Adios Pro 4 and fast-paced trainer Adizero EVO SL last October. The brand shared that the Adios Pro 4 was designed after studying strike patterns of some of its leading athletes, to understand where grip was needed most, these insights were translated into a new patterned outsole that maps material to key areas. "It’s a huge honour to be the first athlete in Singapore to put on the Adios Pro 4. I remember trying the AP4s for the first time in a school trial and I was absolutely flying and even felt comfortable at the end of the 5000m time trial on top of having a long day in hospital," said Nicholas Rachmadi , who claimed a personal best time of 1:22:46 and finished overall 5th for the local category half-marathon in the Adios Pro 4s. "The AP4 is in a class of its own and its responsiveness and comfort is what makes it superior to its predecessors in my opinion. The new LIGHTLOCK upper didn’t give any heat spots or discomfort and wraps around my feet nicely for the entire 21.1km. The ENERGYRODS 2.0 really powered every stride too!" Donning superhero costumes for their ekiden race, and coming in overall sixth out of 98 teams, members of the Superhero Runners Ekiden team sported the Ekiden Pack of the Adios Pro 4 in the red and silver colourway. "Adios Pro 4 for me felt soft and squishy underfoot, but built for pure speed. It’s like running on clouds with a turbocharged engine!" shared an excited Neyton Tan (spiderman), finisher of 42 full marathons to date. "With the Ekiden AP4, I can do this all day and all night," added Paul Martin in his Captain America outfit, a member of the ekiden team. His teammate Sebastian Cheong, donning the Ironman costume echoed the sentiment saying: "AP4 didn't just meet my expectations; it soared beyond them." Said Nelson Wong: "The adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 is incredibly responsive and lightweight feel, making it perfect for speed-focused runners to nail your long-distance races." Developed at adidas’ Innovation Lab in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and tested extensively with consumers and top athletes across multiple countries in Iten, Kenya, Japan and the US, the key updates of the shoe include: Speed Focused Design Combining proven race-winning technology with fresh speed-focused design features, the Adizero Adios Pro 4 (commonly known as AP4) is engineered to help runners break records – whether it's a world or personal best. New Forefoot Rocket Point Geometry Inspired by the revolutionary Adizero Adios Pro Evo1, the forefoot rocker – the point at which the sole curves upward underneath the toes or forefoot – is placed at 60% of the length of the shoe. This is lab-tested to trigger forward momentum and improve running economy. Alongside this, the shoe boasts a full-length Lightstrike Pro midsole, providing runners with a lighter and softer feeling as their feet hit the ground. Lightlock Upper The shoe introduces a first-of-its-kind lightweight, one-way stretch woven mesh upper that is paired with internal locking bands for a snug and secure feeling when running at high speed. This is matched with a new lacing system, which provides a locked-down fit for runners. LIGHTTRAXION Outsole After studying strike patterns of some of adidas’ leading athletes, to understand where grip was needed most, these insights were translated into a new patterned outsole that maps material to key areas. Key tech details: STACK HEIGHT: 39MM / 33MM MIDSOLE DROP: 6MM WEIGHT: MEN’S – APPROXIMATELY 200G / WOMEN’S – 172G (based on a UK 8.5) Where to buy Adios Pro 4 in Singapore? • Singapore to Field First Skier and First Female Skater at FISU Winter Games Torino

After 10 years, Team Singapore returns to the FISU Winter Games, set to be represented by two history-makers in the local winter sport scene PHOTO: MARTIN HOLTOM SINGAPORE, 7 JANUARY 2025 – In 2015, short track skater Matthew Mak was the first athlete to represent Singapore at the FISU World University Games Winter in Granada. Ten years on, the Singapore flag will once again fly at the FISU Winter Games to be held in Torino, Italy, from 13 to 23 January 2025. This time, the Singapore contingent will have two athletes representing two firsts. National skier Faiz Basha , 22, will be the first Singaporean snow sports athlete to compete at the FISU Winter Games. He is currently in mechanical engineering at the University of Strathclyde.  Read our 2022 feature interview with Faiz, where he reflects on his career beginnings and the challenges he faced along the way here . National short track skater Amelia Chua , 18, will be the first female Singaporean athlete to compete at the FISU Winter Games. She is currently reading law at the University of Nottingham.   Mr Ng Woon Yang, President of Singapore University Sports Council (SUSC), said, “This is the first FISU World University Games that will see Singapore represented in both snow and ice sports. We are thrilled to support our first snow sports athlete and first female winter sports athlete as they head to Torino. The games are a perfect opportunity for student-athletes to experience cultural exchange through sport, and benefit from friendship and cooperation with other like-minded young athletes from different countries and backgrounds. We trust that Faiz and Amelia will have a productive and  meaningful time at the Games.”  PHOTO: FAIZ BASHA Both student-athletes are looking forward to racing on snow and ice in Torino, on the back of personal improvements and achievements in 2024.   Faiz is feeling pumped after achieving his first-ever top 5 placing at an International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) event last year. Since completing his national military service in 2023, he has wasted no time in getting back into competitive form, with several top 15 finishes at FIS events culminating in a 5th place finish at FIS Elite international Perito Moreno in July.   Amelia is also kicking off 2025 on a positive note, on the back of a good 2024. Last January, she represented Singapore at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon and in March became the youngest-ever Singaporean female skater to qualify for and compete at the ISU Short Track World Championships in Rotterdam. In August, she won bronze at the Asian Open Trophy Jakarta. In November, she broke the national junior Under-18 record as well as the national Junior A record for 500m that had stood since 2016. With that, she now has 14 national records under her belt.  PHOTO: JONAS CHUA Mr Marco Bardelli, President of Singapore Ski & Snowboard Association (SSSA), is feeling positive about the Games. “I am very proud of Faiz’s performance improvement last year. He has definitely opened many new doors for Singapore in snow sports, and I am sure he will do his best at FISU.” Ms Alison Chan, President of Singapore Ice Skating Association (SISA), added, “It has been 10 years since Singapore was first represented at the FISU Winter Games through short track. I’m glad our short track skater Amelia, together with her Team Singapore teammate Faiz, will be flying the Singapore flag once again at the Games.”

  • 20 Must Have Songs in Your Training Playlist for Your Fitness Goals This Year

From nostalgic forgotten classics to iconic hits and unassuming motivators, here's a list of both understated and popular songs you should have in your training playlist PHOTO: HANIDA HUSSIEN, SPORTPLUS.SG It's January, it's a new year, and there are plenty of races now on the horizon. Whether you're training for a 5km race, T100 or MetaSprint, a marathon or HYROX, there'll be times in the training block where you're going to have to remind yourself one thing: "I can do this. Watch me ." One of the most helpful ways of getting you to that finish line is the right music . If you look deeper, rhythm is very much present in sports. Whether you're trying to control your mindset, your heart rate, the beat of your running shoes hitting the ground, or the timing of your lifts in the gym or one-twos in ball sports, you'll need that rhythm ingrained in your mind. Once its broken, you'll either begin slowing down or become irrational in your game plan. PHOTO: HANA BASIR, SPORTPLUS.SG There's no telling what songs help, everyone has their preferences! There's also a group of people who prefer to run without any music at all, instead opting to listen to the birds chirp in the trees, the sounds of waves crashing along the coast or the cars driving by. Even these peaceful sounds help in keeping the pace and staying on beat. While some may rely on rap and fast-paced music, others may find slower pieces or musicals more motivational. Sportplus.sg curated a mini playlist below made from different genres. If you're looking to pump up your confidence on a run or process your emotions in the gym, here are some songs you should definitely have. We'll start with three of our community runners' favourites, before diving into sportplus.sg 's own recommendations by genre! Sofie Chandra, Founder of Happy Pace Club and Captain of The High Panters - No music OR Lose My Mind by Brennan Heart & Wildstylez It's all or nothing for Sofie Chandra, founder of Happy Pace Club and Captain of The High Panters. Sofie is one of the few who actually prefers to run without music, opting to listen to the sounds of nature instead. However, it's the total opposite during her HIIT and strength trainings. When she trains hard, the beats in her ears pop off even harder. Perhaps that’s what makes her the unstoppable force she is in the community! According to Sofie, she even listens to this when going to sleep too...make of that what you will. Mulyadi Muhammad, Marathoner - Mr Brightside by The Killers Jamming out to Mr. Brightside is nothing short of a universal experience. The instant that iconic opening guitar riff hits, your adrenaline kicks into overdrive. With Brandon Flowers pouring raw angst into every lyric, you’ll feel every emotion surge through you. And those 16th-note hi-hats in the verse? They don’t just drive the song’s urgency and energy—they'll push you too. Vanessa Oh, Runner and Pacer - REACT by Switch Disco ft. Ella Henderson and Robert Miles Whether you're hitting the gym or getting your miles in in the gym, 'REACT''s pulsating rhythm, uplifting melody and driving bassline will pump you up. While Vanessa’s choice may not be as chaotic as Sofie’s love for Hardstyle, her favourite track boasts a relatively slower pace—but it’s so euphoric that you simply won’t be able to stop running once it’s in your ears. Punk Rock / Pop Punk Know Your Enemy - Green Day (130bpm) From the rallying drum beats at the very start to Billie Joe Armstrong's powerful, iconic voice and the band's backing vocals, the song has all you need to keep you running. The lyrics are liberating, there's a guitar solo, there's anger and frustration, this song will do you wonders in helping to push through the pain in your legs. Ignorance - Paramore (171bpm) Training to blow off some steam? Ignorance by Paramore is the song to let out some anger. The song itself is about the anger and disconnect Hayley Williams (the Frontwoman) felt for her bandmates at the time, and the lyrics are the epitome of angst. With the song's 171bpm tempo, and the verse being led by an isolated, pumping bass drum, you're going to keep going. Only Ever Only You - modernlove. There's a plethora of intense and heart-wrenching punk rock/pop punk songs out there from bands like Sum41, Blink-182 and more that are well known, so here's a new one from an upcoming Irish band you'll want in your playlist if you're wanting to train and feel all your anger and emotions at the same time. It's so pulsating from beginning to end that you won't even have time to think of stopping. K-Pop Mantra - JENNIE (117bpm) Released in October 2024, JENNIE's 'Mantra' is a certified hit, though it hasn't been making its rounds around the sporting community just yet despite its rallying lyrics. Admittedly, this one may resonate with women much more. It's a feminist anthem that celebrates girl-power and living freely, peacefully yet loudly as a woman in any given space. With sports still being male-dominated, this dance-pop hit will have your self-confidence shooting to new heights. After all, JENNIE's confidence can be felt through her vocals and the song's bass riff. Chk Chk Boom - Stray Kids (102bpm) With its infectious dance choreography, inspiring lyrics and relentless Latin-inspired drumbeat, Chk Chk Boom is the ultimate anthem for crushing your goals. Also released in 2024, the song has been described as a celebration of having "the confidence to hit your target more perfectly than anyone else." Stray Kids' signature youthful and edgy energy shines through, as it does in nearly all their tracks. The unwavering confidence of all eight members is bound to resonate and inspire you. So if you're aiming for that personal best, put this on loop! I Am The Best - 2NE1 (128bpm) For the old school K-pop lovers who've been there since the early 2000s, this is a certified classic. The song starts by chanting "I am the best" multiple times in Korean before transitioning into one of the most iconic dance beats in K-pop history. Need we say more? You'll be too busy dancing in your head to feel the pain in your legs. Your legs won't stop even if you want to. GOOD BOY - GD X TAEYANG (130bpm) If you're into K-pop, you can't have a training playlist without the kings of K-pop. 'GOOD BOY' is a certified classic in the world of Korean dance music. While its BPM sits at a slower 95 and well, the fact that it's in Korean, the way the duo from K-pop giants BIGBANG delivers the track will leave you feeling like an absolute badass no matter your gender, regardless of the song's title. And sometimes, feeling like a powerhouse is all you need to push yourself. Musicals / Movie Soundtracks This is Me - The Greatest Showman (94 bpm) The Greatest Showman's title track, 'The Greatest Show' is undeniably a song that should be on an athlete's playlist. "This is Me' however, is a more melancholic anthem for those looking to pull themselves out of a rut and inspire themselves. While energising yourself with edgy, upbeat dance tunes is a go-to for many, it's equally important to embrace the full spectrum of your emotions when tackling challenges. Sometimes, that means leaning into more soulful tracks. Sports aren't easy, and neither is pushing through life’s hurdles. 'This Is Me' captures the spirit of being unapologetically yourself, and with its soaring vocals and inspiring drumline, it’s the kind of anthem that reminds you that you’ve got what it takes to make it. Suzume - RADWIMPS ft. Toaka (78bpm) Hear me out. It's a somber song but it's got that dramatic effect. Imagine yourself in a raw, inspiring sports documentary where you're training hard, you're giving it everything you've got to make it to the finish, everything is in slow motion and this song plays in the background. Sometimes you have to act like you're the main character to make it in life. He Lives in You (Reprise) - The Lion King Broadway Cast (116bpm) In the Musical, He Lives in You (Reprise) is the show's final number, a celebration of Simba's redemption and finding it himself to return to his pride to become king after his father's death. The song features an inspiring choir of voices serenading you with some of the Broadway's most inspiring lyrics. It'll be sure to pull you back in the game when you feel like the dreaded wall is approaching. Pop Mayonaka no Door (Stay With Me) - Miki Matsubara (108bpm) Despite its release being in 1979, the song went viral a couple of years ago and earned worldwide recognition from a completely new generation. Give it a listen during your next run, and you'll know why! It's pure city pop vibes, and makes you appreciate the environment around you much more. It simply fills you with endorphins. And that's the power of music. Dreaming - Smallpools (119bpm) Made popular when it was included in the video game, FIFA 14's soundtrack, 'Dreaming' has a bit of a cult following, but surely deserves more love. Within the FIFA and football community, the song is a classic, surefire way to get those legs and energies pumped. Runners and gym-goers, add this into your playlists and while you're at it, we recommend sifting through the FIFA soundtracks from the mid 2010s, there are gems in there that'll get you to the finish line. Jam - Michael Jackson (116bpm) We had the King of K-pop in the list, now we have the King of Pop. The song's intro feels like the firing of a starting gun the way it instantly grabs your attention. The beat instantly kicks in, followed by a funky bass line and a voice literally telling you to get up and jam. Even if your biceps and quads are giving up, you won't be able to ignore the need to go on with the help of this song. Rock Cum On Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot (145bpm) For anyone that played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, remember how this sone made you feel? The main vocals possess the iconic power reminiscent of 1980s rock vocalists—full of raw intensity and commanding presence. They beckon you, urging you forward with a force that’s impossible to ignore. As if that's not enough to make you go,go,go , there's then a guitar solo. Sometimes all we need to go on is a guitar solo from the 1980s. Reputation - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (204bpm) Known for her rebellious front, Joan Jett is a force of nature and through her music — intentional or not — often rallies outcasts together. 'Reputation''s head banging beat and rebellious lyrics will make you feel like you can break down just about any wall. All eyes are on you, but all that matters is what you see in yourself. Club Foot - Kasabian (102bpm) Another iconic song on the FIFA soundtrack, 'Club Foot' starts of with a dramatic orchestral build up, before it transitions into the powerful and gritty rock song that commands your confidence. The song explores self-empowerment and defiance, urging you to face obstacles head on. It's lyrics depict being held back but wanting to push on to carve your own path, perfect for those tough interval trainings. BONUS We’ve packed in plenty of high-energy, adrenaline-pumping tracks but sometimes, running and training serves as an outlet to process emotions, not just escape from them. This song isn't really meant to help you keep the pace, but it's 10 minutes long and it's a devastating song. So if you're wanting to go out there and run while trying to process how you're feeling deep down, this one is for you. Plus, maybe you can use the song's length as a goal when you're already tired mid-run. "I'll run for the whole 10 minutes without stopping (or crying)." You guessed it. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) - Taylor Swift (93bpm) With thousands of songs out there perfect for a running playlist, this list could go on and on. Whatever song you choose to listen to while you train — be it for your physical or mental health goals— make sure you find that rhythm, and don't ever let anything break it. #SgSports #SgRunning #MusicPlaylist

  • Metasprint Duathlon Possible Industry Marker for Return of Physical Races

MetaSport celebrates double success with Aquathlon and Duathlon events, but will have to wait on Triathlon and 'Run As One' following suspension of events PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Some 890 participants took part in the Duathlon Origin MetaSprint Series event on Saturday, 24 April 2021. In a new format of racing which saw participants flagged off via a rolling start across four bubbles over the course of the day, even a heavy downpour in the morning did not dampen spirits. It was MetaSport's second of three events that make up the Metasprint series, the first being the Aquathlon that took place on 27 March 2021 in Sentosa and saw over 1,000 sign-ups, and the last of the three in the series being the Triathlon, which has been postponed indefinitely following the new Phase 2 Heightened Alert measures. Nathalie Marquet, CEO of Metasport, organisers of the Metasprint series. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG When asked on the difficulty of hosting such events during the Coronavirus pandemic, Nathalie Marquet, CEO of Metasport admitted it has been challenging, and that her team has had to find new innovative ways to keep participants engaged among other challenges. She said, "The biggest challenge was of course adhering to the social distancing guidelines - which meant spreading participants over a longer period of time - in groups of 50, re-inventing the way the event was run, its format, structure, and protocol." The Chief Executive was not exaggerating when she said her team has had to re-imagine race protocols and returned to the drawing board on numerous occasions, with the process from day one taking her up to seven months to complete. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG "It gets slightly easier along the way, but every event has its own challenges. We just completed the Duathlon, which faced different challenges from the Aquathlon, which was a swim-run a few weeks ago," she reflected. "We know the new processes are working, but at the same time it's a different format. For the (upcoming) Triathlon, it's again fine-tuning the plans from the learnings of this event, and it takes a lot of communication." Indeed, feedback from participants has played a huge role in providing Nathalie's team with new insights. Afterall, it is an entirely new way of racing as well. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG One of the participants, Stella, enjoyed her first physical race in over a year, and said the atmosphere at the event has motivated her to want to come back and do more. "I haven't trained a lot over the Covid period, and I haven't been on a bike for 20km for a long time, but it was a good start," she said with a smile. "It's nice to have people cheering at the side, you can't help but get in the spirit of things," she continued. "Even though I woke up at 4am, I can't help but smile." PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG The Metasprint Series is part of Sport Singapore's list of "Blended Events” initiative, a slice of the Government's $50 million Sports Resilience Package to help the sports industry cope with the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. "Run As One", a running event that is also organised by Metasport, was originally slated to happen at the end of May 2021, has been postponed to a later date, owing to the Phase 2 Heightened Alert measures that saw all sports events suspended till further notice. #SportPlusSG #Running #RunningEvents #MetasprintSeries #Duathlon

  • MetaSprint Series Triathlon 2021: Biggest Mass Participation Sports Event in Singapore since April

Close to 1,000 participants compete over two days in third and final leg of MetaSport's MetaSprint series PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG 13 November 2021, Singpore - There were smiles all around Palawan beach, Sentosa, as Singapore witnessed the return of its biggest mass participation sports event since April this year - the 2021 MetaSprint Series: Triathlon . Even the rain could do little to dampen spirits of the participants who signed up for the event, which was given the clearance to go ahead by the authorities albeit amidst tight Safe Management Measures for the safety of participants and organisers alike. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG Racers were grouped into bubbles of 25 per wave, with a total of 18 bubbles spread out throughout the day, with the earliest starting at 6:30am, with close to 1,000 participants taking part over two days. There were some modifications that needed to be made to the event however, with the cycling leg replaced by a static bike station which racers had to complete, before they transitioned into the swimming and running legs of the event. VIDEO: SPORTPLUS.SG MetaSport , organisers of the event and of the Metasprint Series , were understandable delighted to finally see the event come to fruition, having seen it postponed twice from its originally intended date of April 2021. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG The triathlon is the third and final event of the Metasprint Series, with Metasport having successfully organised the aquathlon and duathlon events as well earlier this year, before the tightening of measures nationwide following a surge in COVID-19 cases locally led to a major disruption across all sports events since early June. PHOTO: SPORTPLUS.SG The Metasprint Series triathlon event is likely to be a marker and benchmark for the return of other mass participation sporting events in Singapore, with Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon also making its return with a physical event as an Event Finale to be held at the Marina Bay Floating Platform on 4-5 December 2021, which feel feature the Ekiden, 5km and 10km races.
