Strong showing from sailors, as three Singapore athletes wrap up their Tokyo campaigns Image credit: SportSG via AFP 30 July 2021, Tokyo, Japan - There was good news in sailing today, as duo Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low closed the gap on the leaders with three good races, scoring third, second and seventh to end the day in 13th position, up from 16th the previous sailing day. Elsewhere, Olympic debutant rower Joan Poh ended her Olympic campaign with a strong finish - to finish 28th out of a field of 32 competitors overall. Sailor Ryan Lo and swimmer Quah Ting Wen also ended their competition in Tokyo today with admirable performances. SAILING Lighter winds allowed sailing duo Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low to play comfortably at the front of the fleet for the first two of today's three races in the Sailing Women's Skiff 49er FX (races 7 to 9). The duo had started the day in 16th position, with 63 net points, but their strong showing today saw them leapfrog into 13th position, ending the day on 75 points. They will finish their qualifying races tomorrow (races 10 - 12) Friday, 31 July 2021. Olympic debutant Ryan Lo also called time on his Tokyo stay with a good finish in the Men's One Person Dinghy Laser, coming in 21st out of a field of 35 after 10 races. It has been a promising campaign for the Singaporean sailor, who is one of 17 debutants making their Olympic bow for Singapore at Tokyo 2020. Image credit: SportSG via AFP ROWING In rowing, Joan Poh clocked a time of 8:21.23 to finish 4th out of 6 competitors in the Finals E for Women's Single Sculls, putting her in 28th position overall out of a field of 32 competitors. The Tan Tock Seng nurse is only the second rower in history to represent Singapore at the Olypmic Games, the first being Saiyidah Aisyah at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Image credit: SportSG via AFP SWIMMING Over at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre, Quah Ting Wen wrapped up her third Olympic Games campaign in the women’s 50m freestyle heats today. She clocked a time of 26.16 sec to finish 40th out of a field of 81 swimmers and did not progress to the semi-finals of the event. Quah made her debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games before missing the 2012 edition of the Olympics due to a freak accident. She then qualified for the 2016 and 2020 editions of the Games. The 26 year-old fired a closing two-under-par 70 to finish even for the tournament, and tie compatriot Greg Foo but win on countback based on the final round score. Foo, joint leader at the start of the day with Singapore’s Mitchell Slorach, closed with a 75 on the Tampines Course. Slorach tied for third, two shots back, with fellow countryman Mardan Mamat and Myanmar’s Zaw Moe. “This is my first win as a pro, so it means so much,” said Ong, who took home the tournament prize money of S$3,850. “It was close all the way and to come out on top against Greg [Foo] and Mardan [Mamat] is really great. I didn’t check the scores for most of the round but when I checked the app I saw we were tied so that put the pressure on.” Image credit: SPORTFIVE Ong, a professional for three years who is based at Tanah Merah, toured the front nine in two under and came home in even par making a crucial birdie on the par-three 16th. Foo had claimed the second leg of the Pro Series here on the Tampines Course – helped by a final round 64 – and was looking to continue that winning streak this week. However, the two-time Singapore Open Amateur champion double bogeyed the 10th and dropped shots on 14, 15 and 18 for a back nine of 42. Despite that, he was still able to move to the top of the Order of Merit with total earnings of S$7,050, while Slorach is in second place and Ong third. Mamat, a five-time winner on the Asian Tour, also struggled home in two over – he made double on the par five 15th - to help hand victory to Ong. “It wasn’t meant to be today, best to let the young ones win,” joked 53-year-old Mamat. In the 73rd Singapore Open Amateur Championship – which was run in parallel with the Pro Series event, on the same course ‒ Singapore’s Ryan Ang emerged victorious. The Stags who are in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the appointed centralised bubble venue to host the East Zone group stages for Group H, will face further tests in the form of two-time Champions League winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC (2008, 2016), with Chiangrai United completing the group. While Gamba Osaka are not currently having the best of seasons in the J1 League, sitting in 16th position out of 20 teams, they remain clear favourites in the tie and Gavin Lee's charges will need to be at their best to come away with a result in the opening tie. Singapore Cup 2021 cancelled as rearranged schedule incorporates Stay Home Notice for National Team Players and Tampines Rovers' Continental Commitments Image credit: SPL Facebook The Singapore Premier League season will resume on Saturday, 17 July 2021, a statement from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has confirmed. The FAS has also released the updated fixtures for the remainder of the 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League season, which will see the first fixture of Game Week 12 pitting Tanjong Pagar United FC against the Young Lions, a replay of the fixture from Game Week 9 that was abandoned due to inclement weather. Given the later completion date of the League, the Singapore Cup 2021 has been cancelled to facilitate adequate preparation for the Singapore Under-22 side and the senior Lions squad, with the former being involved in AFC Under-23 Asian Cup 2022 Qualifiers and 2021 Southeast Asian Games, while the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup looms large for the latter. The remainder of the statement released by the FAS read: The current SPL season took a break after the final two matches of Game Week 11 on 23 May for the FIFA international window and was slated to resume on 2 July. However, following consultations with clubs, the fixtures have since been rescheduled to allow clubs to have at least two weeks of preparation time with their respective players who were called up for international duty with the Men’s National Team. This latest schedule will also allow for the League table to be balanced at the earliest possible opportunity, with all teams having played the same number of matches. In addition, the changes were made in mind to cause minimal disruption to the League schedule as a result of Tampines Rovers FC’s involvement in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League 2021 (East) Group Stage from 25 June to 10 July in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Singapore event. The annual sports fiesta, into its sixth edition, looks to rally Singaporeans together in celebration of National Day through sports and physical activity. This year's Round Island Bike Adventure offers three (3) categories: Individual Youth, Individual Masters and Individual Open, and will take place on 8 August 2021. There are no registration fees involved, but participants will need to choose from one of four flag off locations: OCBC Arena, Pasir Ris Sport Centre, Yishun Sport Centre and Jurong West Sport Centre.
