- Goalkeeper Hassan Sunny rescues Sailors: SPL 2021 [Round 12]
Hassan Sunny rescues Sailors, Tanjong Pagar Utd thrash Hougang Utd, Amy Recha double seals points for Geylang Image credit: Singapore Premier League ALBIREX NIIGATA 1-1 LION CITY SAILORS: HASSAN SUNNY HEROICS RESCUE SAILORS 24 July 2021, Singapore - Goalkeeper Hassan Sunny delivered a man-of-the-match performance for Lion City Sailors in the top of the table clash with champions Albirex Niigata, with the two title chasing clubs settling for a point at Jurong East Stadium. In a match which saw new Sailors Head Coach Kim Do-hoon make his Singapore Premier League bow, the Sailors were slow out of the blocks and spent much of the first half chasing shadows. Image credit: Lion City Sailors Facebook Albirex Niigata were industrious as always, and created several guilt edge chances but were thwarted each time by the heroics of Singapore national custodian Hassan Sunny in the Lion City Sailors goal, with his finger tip save on 32 minutes to deny Nagasawa's 25-yard effort the pick of the bunch. The White Swans would not be denied however, and duly went ahead through Ryoya Taniguchi who converted from the penalty spot after Yu Tokiwa was felled by Aqhari Abdullah. The Sailors came out a more creative side after the break with the introduction of Brazilian playmaker Diego Lopes, and their pressure told eventually with Lopes releasing Hafiz Nor down the left before the latter's cutback was fired into the roof of the net by hitman Stipe Plazibat. Image credit: Singapore Premier League HOUGANG UNITED 1 - 4 TANJONG PAGAR UNITED: HISTORIC WIN FOR JAGUARS Tanjong Pagar United scored only their second league win of the season, and their first over third placed Hougang United since 2013 when they hammered the Cheetahs 4-1 at home. After a goal-less first half, the floodgates opened in the two minutes into the second period with Tanjong Pagar United drawing first blood through Anaqi Ismit, who got on the end of a teasing cross by Reo Nishiguchi to put the Jaguars in front. Image credit: Singapore Premier League Not looking to be outdone on their home patch, Hougang United duly drew level through Japanese hitman Tomoyuki Doi's 15th goal of the season. The league's top scorer bent his free kick on the edge of the area into the far corner of Zharfan Rohaizad's goal, leaving the custodian rooted to the spot to level the scores. Reo Nishiguchi added a third for Tanjong Pagar United in the 88th minute when he cut aside and let fly a clever left footed finish that went in off Izwan Mahbud's right hand post to put it beyond the Cheetahs, before Khairul Amri fired home from close range after being set up by fellow substitute Suhairi Sabri. GEYLANG INTERNATIONAL 3-1 BALESTIER KHALSA: EAGLES BATTLE BACK Geylang International recovered from going behind to register three goals and seal all 3 points in their first match after the SPL hiatus. A defensive mistake cost Geylang International dear inside the opening 11 minutes and Sime Zuzul made no mistake from the edge of the area, rifling home after outmuscling Eagles skipper Ichikawa. Image credit: Singapore Premier League The goal came much against the run of play as Geylang had dominated the earlier exchanges with high pressing play, forcing the Balestier into rushed clearances. They eventually found their breakthrough on 39 minutes through a swift counterattack that was started by Barry Maguire, who picked out Moresche's clever overlapping run down the left, who in turn set up Amy Recha to finish with aplomb past an onrushing Riki Kumura in the Balestier goal. Image credit: Singapore Premier League The Brazilian provider then turned goalscorer when he scored his 9th goal of the season 8 minutes into the second half, timing his run perfectly to reach Maguire's pass and dink it over Kumura for Geylang's second. The Eagles doubled their lead just 5 minutes later when from a similar position Barry Maguire picked out Amy Recha, who found himself in oceans of space, and duly turned his marker for fire home his second and seal the points for the Eagles. #SportPlusSG #Football #SingaporePremierLeague #SingaporeFootball

But she has no regrets as she "absolutely loves what she does". She told the Singapore media, "Sometimes your best is not good enough, sometimes it is… but you live and you learn, and at the end of the day, I love what I do… and no one can take that away from us.” Image credit: Kong Chong Yew, SNOC DIVING In diving news, Singapore's Freida Lim made her Olympic bow in the women's 10m platform diving preliminary round this afternoon. - Golf: Marc Ong wins maiden Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG Title
26 year-old fired a closing two-under-par 70 to finish even for the tournament, but wins on countback based on final round score Image credit: SPORTFIVE Tanah Merah Country Club, 16 July 2021 - Singapore’s Marc Ong won for the first time on the Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG today. The 26 year-old fired a closing two-under-par 70 to finish even for the tournament, and tie compatriot Greg Foo but win on countback based on the final round score. Foo, joint leader at the start of the day with Singapore’s Mitchell Slorach, closed with a 75 on the Tampines Course. Slorach tied for third, two shots back, with fellow countryman Mardan Mamat and Myanmar’s Zaw Moe. “This is my first win as a pro, so it means so much,” said Ong, who took home the tournament prize money of S$3,850. “It was close all the way and to come out on top against Greg [Foo] and Mardan [Mamat] is really great. I didn’t check the scores for most of the round but when I checked the app I saw we were tied so that put the pressure on.” Image credit: SPORTFIVE Ong, a professional for three years who is based at Tanah Merah, toured the front nine in two under and came home in even par making a crucial birdie on the par-three 16th. Foo had claimed the second leg of the Pro Series here on the Tampines Course – helped by a final round 64 – and was looking to continue that winning streak this week. However, the two-time Singapore Open Amateur champion double bogeyed the 10th and dropped shots on 14, 15 and 18 for a back nine of 42. Despite that, he was still able to move to the top of the Order of Merit with total earnings of S$7,050, while Slorach is in second place and Ong third. Mamat, a five-time winner on the Asian Tour, also struggled home in two over – he made double on the par five 15th - to help hand victory to Ong. “It wasn’t meant to be today, best to let the young ones win,” joked 53-year-old Mamat. In the 73rd Singapore Open Amateur Championship – which was run in parallel with the Pro Series event, on the same course ‒ Singapore’s Ryan Ang emerged victorious. He closed with a 74 to finish four over for the event and beat countryman Justin Kuk by two shots. #SportPlusSG #Golf #TeamSingapore

- Tashkent Test for Tampines Rovers
Singapore Premier League side set for AFC Champions League Group Stage Debut Image credit: Tampines Rovers Facebook Lokomotiv Stadium: Singapore Premier League side Tampines Rovers are set to make their AFC Champions League Group Stage bow on Friday, 25 June 2021 at 10pm (Singapore time) against last season's J-League runners up and 2008 Champions League winners Gamba Osaka. The Stags who are in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the appointed centralised bubble venue to host the East Zone group stages for Group H, will face further tests in the form of two-time Champions League winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC (2008, 2016), with Chiangrai United completing the group. While Gamba Osaka are not currently having the best of seasons in the J1 League, sitting in 16th position out of 20 teams, they remain clear favourites in the tie and Gavin Lee's charges will need to be at their best to come away with a result in the opening tie. File Photo: SportPlus.sg The Tampines Rovers Head Coach would not have it any other way however saying, "To begin with there is no easy group in the AFC Champions League. Given understandably the stature of Singapore football compared to our counterparts overseas." "It is always going to be a challenge, the question is how do we frame our thinking to approach this challenge - do we try to run away an seek easier competitions or find excuses, or we just take it head on and try to be as much as ourselves as possible when we play those teams," the 31-year-old added. Lee was philosophical when asked how he fancied his side's chances and what would be deemed as a good result or KPI for the Stags. He simply wants his charges to retain their identity whoever the opposition, and will encourage his players to express themselves, albeit with a bit more discipline. File Photo: SportPlus.sg "When we step onto the pitch, we want to express our identity. We do understand that the competition is a lot higher (than the SPL), it is going to be a lot more demanding," he reflected. "Oppositions are going to defend better, they are going to be better on the ball, so naturally we might be out of possession a little more than we used to." "But that doesn't change how we want to approach the game when we have the ball, we want to score goals, defend clever and have a game plan - we want to try and win each game as much as possible." File Photo: SportPlus.sg Tampines Rovers' AFC Champions League opener against Gamba Osaka will be televised live on Channel 114 FOX Sports Asia Channel at 10.05pm Singapore time. - Football: Singapore Premier League to resume on 17 July 2021
Singapore Cup 2021 cancelled as rearranged schedule incorporates Stay Home Notice for National Team Players and Tampines Rovers' Continental Commitments Image credit: SPL Facebook The Singapore Premier League season will resume on Saturday, 17 July 2021, a statement from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has confirmed. The FAS has also released the updated fixtures for the remainder of the 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League season, which will see the first fixture of Game Week 12 pitting Tanjong Pagar United FC against the Young Lions, a replay of the fixture from Game Week 9 that was abandoned due to inclement weather. Given the later completion date of the League, the Singapore Cup 2021 has been cancelled to facilitate adequate preparation for the Singapore Under-22 side and the senior Lions squad, with the former being involved in AFC Under-23 Asian Cup 2022 Qualifiers and 2021 Southeast Asian Games, while the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup looms large for the latter. The remainder of the statement released by the FAS read: The current SPL season took a break after the final two matches of Game Week 11 on 23 May for the FIFA international window and was slated to resume on 2 July. However, following consultations with clubs, the fixtures have since been rescheduled to allow clubs to have at least two weeks of preparation time with their respective players who were called up for international duty with the Men’s National Team. Image credit: SPL Facebook These players are required to serve a Stay Home Notice (SHN) upon their return to Singapore, which ends on 4 July. This latest schedule will also allow for the League table to be balanced at the earliest possible opportunity, with all teams having played the same number of matches. This will be achieved after the final match of Game Week 12, which will see all teams having played a total of 12 matches each. In addition, the changes were made in mind to cause minimal disruption to the League schedule as a result of Tampines Rovers FC’s involvement in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League 2021 (East) Group Stage from 25 June to 10 July in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. As of the time of this release, only one League match involving Tampines Rovers has been rescheduled – their fixture against Lion City Sailors FC (from 11 July to 4 August). #SportPlusSG #Football #SingaporePremierLeague #SingaporeFootball
