Singaporean Runner Secures First International Podium with Historic 4:18.6 Performance

15 JUNE 2026, Utrecht, Netherlands – Singaporean distance runner Shaun Goh has officially etched his name into the history books once again, setting a new Singapore national record for the road mile at the prestigious Big Mile Series in the Netherlands.

Clocking an impressive 4:18.6, Shaun secured a third-place finish, marking his first-ever podium appearance on the international stage. This latest achievement further cements his dominance across various road distances, adding to his existing national records in the 5km and 10km road categories.

A Historic Milestone for Singapore Running

Reflecting on his record-breaking performance, Shaun expressed a mix of satisfaction and ambition for future races.

"It feels really good to get this record, especially by such a narrow margin. Considering it was my first attempt at a road mile, I definitely feel I can shave off a few more seconds, but overall I'm satisfied with my race execution," said Shaun.

For the 29-year-old athlete, the achievement is deeply personal. "This one means quite a lot to me. For now, it's nice to hold the Singapore road records from the mile through to the 10km."

Despite his success, Shaun remains humble and focused on the growth of the sport locally. "The road mile isn't a distance that's commonly raced by Singaporeans, so I suspect this record won't stand for too long as more athletes start attempting it. If anything, I'd be happy to see that happen, as that means the standard of Singapore running is rising."

This milestone follows a blistering start to Shaun's 2026 racing season. Earlier this month, he competed at the Puma Nitro Lange Laufnacht in Germany, clocking 14:45.29 in the 5000m. The performance saw him shave 10 seconds off his personal best, finishing just one second shy of Soh Rui Yong’s 2021 national record (14:44.21). Notably, Shaun’s time was faster than the gold medal-winning mark at the 2025 SEA Games (14:46.38), signaling his arrival as a major force in Southeast Asian middle and long-distance running.
